IRRIGATION IN MEXICO
Mexico is a country with serious limitations in food production and raw materials that allow providing for a growing population of 120 million.These limitations are increasing due to a growing population, improving living standards, rapid industrialization, and it worsens with climate change. In the last 35 years, the harvested area has suffered little change, and is about 20 million hectares of which 15 million ha are rainfed and 5 million ha are irrigated, with annual variations above and below these values due to climate change. Until now, the growing demand for produce and raw materials has been met, due to the increase in productivity of irrigated farming being that rain-fed agriculture productivity has been low. One more limiting factor is the availability of water for irrigation due to a considerable part of the National Territory has little rainfall in the summer. About 32% water runoff exists in the North and Center of the country, where approximately 77% of the population lives and the 86% gross domestic product (GDP) generates, whereas, 68% of runoff happens in the Southeast where only 23% of the population lives and merely 14% GDP is generated, in addition, this region is affected by hurricanes, storms and oods. Faced with this situation, emerging technologies, research, and development are urgently required to enable increased productivity of land and water. Therefore, in Mexico Universities, Research Centers and government agencies foster these activities. The XVIII National Irrigation Congress of the ANEI and the 4th CIGR Inter-Regional Conference aim to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences between Mexican and International experts in matters of research advancements in land and water management issues.
