undada el 6 de enero de 1542 por Francisco de Montejo y León, “El Mozo”, MÉRIDA se edificó sobre las ruinas de la antigua ciudad maya de T’HÓ. Hoy día es el centro de población más grande del sureste mexicano y sorprende a los visitantes con la mezcla perfecta entre la gentileza de sus habitantes y el esplendor de una ciudad moderna que conserva orgullosa sus costumbres y tradiciones.

ounded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo”, Merida was built on the site of the ancient Maya ceremonial center of T’Ho. It is today the most populous city in Mexico’s southeast. Merida surprises visitors by offering the conveniences of a modern metropolis while maintaining the feeling of a small-town. Its residents are noted for their friendliness and kindness, who nurture their customs and traditions with pride.

4. Casa de Montejo: (año 1549) –calle 63, entre 60 y 62-; Fue la casa del conquistador Francisco de Montejo, el “mozo”, hasta su muerte. Hoy es sede de un banco. Entrada gratuita. / (Dating to 1549) -63, between 60 and 62 Street- It was the home of conquistador Francisco “El Mozo” de Montejo until his death. Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (MACAY): -calle 60, entre 61 y 63- Edificio de 2 pisos que aloja la colección de Arte Contemporáneo más importante del Sureste de México. También expone en el anexo Pasaje de la Revolución. Entrada gratuita. / -60, between 61 and 63 StreetThis two-story building, is house of the most important collection of contemporary art in southeastern Mexico. It also presents outstanding temporary art exhibitions of contemporary art.

6. Catedral: (año 1562) –calle 60 con 61-; es de las más grandes catedrales de América y la primera construida en tierra firme del continente americano. A la izquierda del altar mayor se encuentra la venerada imagen del “Cristo de las Ampollas” que fue la única imagen que no se dañó en el vandálico incendio provocado en 1915. / (Dating to 1562) -61 and 60 Street-, it is one of the largest cathedrals of America, it was the first built cathedral built on the mainland of the Americas. To the left of the main altar is the venerated image of the “Christ of the Blisters.” Legend has it that was the only statue was not damaged in the fire set by vandals in 1915. L-D/ M-Sn 7am-6:30pm. It boasts a beautiful dome and two towers; it was occupied by the Jesuits until they were expelled in 1767, when it was then given to the Franciscans of the Third Order. Teatro Peón Contreras: -calle 60 con 59- de 1908 es el actual edificio, varias veces remodelado; lleva el nombre en honor del poeta yucateco José Peón Contreras; es uno de los más hermosos de México. / The current building, first built in 1908 and remodeled several times is named in honor of the Yucatecan poet José Peón Contreras. Constructed; It is one of the most beautiful theaters in Mexico. (Map 1, D2) 9. Universidad AUTÓNOMA DE Yucatán: (1618) –calle 60 con 57-; edificio que fue sede del Colegio de San Pedro, fundado por los jesuitas. Desde 1938 es la Universidad de Yucatán. Ahora sólo es sede de algunas oficinas de la Universidad. / Dating from 1681, the building was headquarters of the College of San Pedro, founded by the Jesuits. 1. Paseo de Montejo: -calle 47 con 58Su construcción se inició en 1897 y concluyó a principios del Siglo XX. Es la más amplia y bella avenida de Mérida y una de las más hermosas de México. / (Calle 58 and Calle 47): Its construction began in 1897 and concluded in the early years of the twentieth century. It is the largest and most beautiful boulevard in Mérida and one of the most beautiful in Mexico.

2. Palacio Cantón: (año 1911) –Paseo Montejo y calle 43- Museo Regional de Antropología. Este palacio construido por el arquitecto italiano Enrico Deserti, también constructor del teatro “Peón Contreras”, es de los más admirables de Mérida. Es sede actual de este Museo, con interesantes piezas mayas. / (Built in 1911) -Paseo de Montejo and Calle 43-, Palacio Cantón today is the Regional Museum of Anthropology. The palace was designed

by Italian architect Enrico Deserti, who was also responsible for the Peón Contreras Theater downtown, it was considered the most luxurious building in Merida of its time. It is currently home to this Museum with a singular collection of Maya artifacts.

Quinta Montes Molina: -Paseo de Montejo 469, entre calles 33 y 35- De diseño neoclásico, sus interiores están bellamente decorados y amueblados, al estilo de fines del Siglo XIX. / (Paseo de Montejo #469, between Calles 33 and 35 Street): With its neoclassical design, its interiors are beautifully decorated and furnished in the style of the late nineteenth century. Monumento a la BANDERA: (año 1956) –Paseo Montejo y calle 27 A- Es en realidad una gran escultura, de imponentes dimensiones -40 m. de largo, en forma de medio círculo-, diseño del escultor Enrique Gottdiener Soto y esculpido por el escultor colombiano Rómulo Rozo. / (Built in 1956) -Paseo de Montejo at Calle 27-, the monument is in actuality a great sculpture. Its imposing dimensions—forty meters long (43 yards)—and in the shape of a half circle, it was designed by Enrique Gottdiener Soto. It was largely sculpted by Colombian sculptor Rómulo Rozo. Centro de Convenciones Siglo XXI.- Norte de Prolongación Montejo y calle 60 – En lo que fue la fábrica “Cordemex”, algunas de sus bodegas fueron rediseñadas, predominando en su fachada las “X”, que semejan la piel de la serpiente (Kukulkán) y con amplios espacios interiores que pueden recibir hasta 12,000 personas. / (Prol. Montejo North and 60 St): What had once been the “Cordemex” factory.

Some of the vast warehouses were redesigned, highlighting façade with a series of giant emblems of the letter “X”, intended to resemble the scales of the mythic Maya serpent-god (Kukulkán). The convention center can accommodate 12,000 people.

El Gran Museo del Mundo Maya.Norte de Prolongación Montejo y calle 60 – “La Puerta de Entrada al Mundo Maya”, en sus majestuosas instalaciones, exhibe más de 1160 piezas, distinguiendo: En este multipremiado Museo, el pasado y el presente se entrelazan a través de tecnologías modernas y sistemas digitales. / -Prolongación Montejo North and Calle 60-, built to position Yucatán as “the Gateway to the Mundo Maya,” it boasts majestic facilities and an exhibition of more than 1,160 pieces. Más allá de la Memoria

N

acido en Corea del Sur, Peter Kim vive y trabaja en Nueva York. Como artista internacional, su trabajo ha sido expuesto en museos y galerías de Estados Unidos, Asia y Europa. Más allá de la Memoria es el título de su primera exposición individual en México. Es el resultado de su residencia efectuada en el Centro Cultural la Cúpula en 2017. El encuentro de Peter Kim con la antigua civilización maya, es la florescencia de su imaginación más allá de la memoria. Su exposición está abierta hasta el 27 de mayo de 2017 en el Centro Cultural la Cúpula.

S

outh Korean artist, Peter Kim lives and works in New York. As an international artist, his work has been shown in museums and galleries of the United States, Asia and Europe. Beyond Memory is the title of his first show in Mexico. It is the result of his artist residency at La Cúpula Cultural Center in 2017. The encounter of Peter Kim with the ancient Maya civilization, is the blossoming of his imagination beyond memory. You can visit his exhibition at La Cúpula Cultural Center until May 27th, 2017.

Emblema de la cultura yucateca que data de principios del siglo XX, ha albergado eventos de carácter nacional e internacional.

En la actualidad es sede de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán y es el recinto cultural más importante del estado. Cuenta con tres salas de exposiciones temporales, restaurante, librería y un módulo de información turística.

n cenote es un pozo natural resultante del colapso de la roca caliza que expone las aguas subterráneas. Algunos cenotes fueron utilizados por los mayas antiguos para las ofrendas de sacrificio. cenote is a natural sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater.

Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. MANÍ. (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself.

In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned.
