2 Ruta Paseo de Montejo | Paseo de Montejo Route 1. Paseo de Montejo: -calle 47 con 58- Su construcción se inició en 1897 y concluyó a principios del Siglo XX. Es la más amplia y bella avenida de Mérida y una de las más hermosas de México. Se tomó como modelo, la famosa avenida “Champs Elisée” de París; amplios andadores, prados y árboles floridos, acogedoras bancas; hermosas mansiones la flanquean, con el lujo que permitió el auge de la venta del henequén yucateco al mundo. Recorrer esta avenida caminando o en un coche-calesa, es una grata experiencia. / (Calle 58 and Calle 47): Its construction began in 1897 and concluded in the early years of the twentieth century. It is the largest and most beautiful boulevard in Mérida and one of the most beautiful in Mexico. It was modeled after the famous Champs-Élysées in Paris. With broad walkways; gardens and flowering trees; cozy benches; and beautiful mansions flank the boulevard, evidence of the luxurious wealth that the rise of the sale of henequen, or sisal, throughout the world afforded the city. Explore this avenue on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. It is a memorable experience.

2. Palacio Cantón: (año 1911) –Paseo Montejo y calle 43- Museo Regional de Antropología. Este palacio construido por el arquitecto italiano Enrico Deserti, también constructor del teatro “Peón Contreras”, es de los más admirables de Mérida, con mármoles europeos, molduras de yeso en techo y paredes, delicada escalinata y columnas dóricas y jónicas. Es sede actual de este Museo, con interesantes piezas mayas. / (Built in 1911) -Paseo de Montejo and Calle 43-, Palacio Cantón today is the Regional Museum of Anthropology. The palace was designed by Italian architect Enrico Deserti, who was also responsible for the Peón Contreras Theater downtown, it was considered the most luxurious building in Merida of its time. It boasts European marble; plaster moldings on the ceiling and walls; a graceful staircase; and Doric and Ionic columns.

Vicente Rodríguez Pérez, on Calle 61, opposite the Plaza Grande. Make sure to visit and enjoy their sweets and natural fruit sorbet cream, which are one of the traditions of the Yucatán. Monumento a la Patria: (año 1956) – Paseo Montejo y calle 27 A- Es en realidad una gran escultura, de imponentes dimensiones -40 m. de largo, en forma de medio círculo-, diseño del escultor Enrique Gottdiener Soto y esculpido, en gran parte en forma personal, por el escultor colombiano Rómulo Rozo. En la cara norte, el escudo nacional y 31 columnas de cada entidad del país, con su escudo. La cara sur, de estilo precolombino maya, con vivienda típica maya, una Ceiba, árbol sagra-

do maya y al centro la figura femenina de una mestiza, con vestimenta prehispánica, que sostiene la base de la bandera de México. / (Built in 1956) -Paseo de Montejo at Calle 27-, the monument is in actuality a great sculpture. Its imposing dimensions—forty meters long (43 yards)—and in the shape of a half circle, it was designed by the sculptor Enrique Gottdiener Soto. It was largely sculpted personally by Colombian sculptor Rómulo Rozo. On the north side, one sees the national emblem and 31 columns of each region (state) in the country with its shield. The south side is done in a pre-Columbian Maya style, with typical Maya house; a ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya; and at the center we see the female figure of a mixed race with PreHispanic dress, holding the base of the flag of Mexico. Some of the vast warehouses were redesigned by the great Mexican architect, D. Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, highlighting façade with a series of giant emblems of the letter “X”, intended to resemble the scales of the mythic Maya serpent-god (Kukulkán). En este multipremiado Museo, el pasado y el presente se entrelazan a través de tecnologías modernas y sistemas digitales. / -Prolongación Montejo North and Calle 60-, built to position Yucatán as “the Gateway to the Mundo Maya,” it boasts majestic facilities and an exhibition of more than 1,160 pieces.

Among the most distinguishing are: from Pre-Hispanic era: bas-reliefs, steles, ceramics, jewelry; from colonial times: civil and religious works of art; and from contemporary times: Maya clothing, highlighting beautiful of dresses, or regional, luxurious clothes, utensils, and religious symbols. La mayor fiesta del año se acerca y durante 24 días Yucatán será protagonista de la mejor feria del sureste mexicano; a partir del viernes 11 de noviembre dará inicio la Feria Yucatán 2016 con la participación de más de 1370 expositores y un programa de actividades que incluye 2300 eventos hasta el próximo domingo 4 de diciembre.

The largest festival of the year is approaching and for 24 days Yucatán will be host the best State Fair in entire southeastern Mexico. Beginning Friday, November 11 and running through Sunday, December 4, 2016, the Yucatán State Fair will feature more than 1,370 exhibitors and vendors, and offer a program of activities that includes over 2,300 events.

on nuevas y modernas instalaciones, atracciones para toda la familia, impresionantes juegos mecánicos y un gran número de artistas invitados la Feria Yucatán 2016 está lista para recibir a más de dos millones de visitantes en sus instalaciones ubicadas al sur de la ciudad de Mérida, en la comisaría de Xmatkuil.

La feria abrirá sus puertas cada día a sus visitantes desde las 08:00 horas y presentará diferentes espectáculos todos los días en sus diferentes foros, ofreciendo opciones para los niños y estudiantes que hacen recorridos en la feria durante la semana en compañía de padres y maestros.

Las atracciones que este año serán parte de los atractivos de la feria incluyen a: Las Vegas Magic Show, New York On Ice, Dinosauria, Forever Circus, Circo Aventura y la Carpa de Espectáculos.

Localizados junto a los demás juegos mecánicos, la Mega King Tower y el Sky Flyer estrenarán la remodelación de la zona de los juegos que ahora está pavimentada por completo y lista para recibir a los miles de visitantes que desean vivir emociones extremas en estos aparatos.

Muy cerca de ahí, 3 nuevas naves de exposición también son parte de los nuevos atractivos y mejoras que se estrenan este año en el recinto ferial.

El Teatro del Pueblo, el Palenque y el Centro de Espectáculos Montejo serán sedes de conciertos con diferentes estilos y propuestas musicales, con artistas de renombre y gran trayectoria, como: Moderatto, La So-

nora Santanera, Los Kumbia Kings, Ha-Ash, entre muchos más.

La Charrería estará presente desde el 19 de noviembre en el Lienzo Charro, ahí mismo habrá una serie de actividades taurinas del 11 al 15 de noviembre con la presencia en el ruedo de novilleros y toreros internacionales. La Pista de Calificación gozará de una intensa jornada de actividades que incluyen diversas exhibiciones y competencias.

ith new and modern facilities, attractions for the whole family, breathtaking rides and a large number of guest artists the Yucatán State Fair 2016 is ready to welcome more than two million visitors at its facilities located south of the city of Mérida, adjacent to the Xmatkuil Police Station.

The State Fair will open its doors to visitors daily beginning at 8 AM and will feature different shows every day in different venues, offering choices for children and students who make journeys at the fairgrounds during the week in the company of parents and teachers.

The attractions that this year will be integral to the attractions of the State Fair include: Las Vegas Magic Show, New York On Ice, Dinosauria, Forever Circus, Adventure Circus, and Carpas de Espectáculos (“Entertainment Tents”).

During weekends, regional comedy will be performed in the “Entertainment Tents” and various artists from the local comedy community will be featured. For example, participating local celebrities include Cux-

um, Chayak, Balita Balam, the Witch Cuchi Cuchi, Los Chetos, Taco de Ojo, and many more.

Located next to the fair rides, the Mega King Tower and Sky Flyer will inaugurate this year’s revamped arcade area, which is now completely paved and will be ready to receive the thousands of visitors who want to experience extreme emotions that only arcade games can offer.

Very nearby, there are three new exhibition halls, also part of the new attractions and improvements that are featured this year at the fairgrounds.

The Teatro del Pueblo, or “People’s Theater,” the Palenque, and the Montejo Entertainment Center will host concerts with differ-

ent styles and musical genres of renowned artists with distinguished careers, such as Moderatto, La Sonora Santanera, Los Kumbia Kings, Ha-Ash, among many more.

Charrería, or cowboy rodeo, will run beginning November 19 in the Lienzo Charro, and in the same venue there will be a series of bullfighting activities running November 11 through November 15. This year, the State Fair will feature bullfighters and matadors or international renown. The Qualifying Rounds will consist of a full day of activities including various exhibitions and competitions.

DZIBILCHALTÚN. Which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber. The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Its facades, with 1 door on one façade and 2 windows on the other, are constructed in a way that allows for an extraordinary phenomenon of light during the equinoxes each SPRING and AUTUMN. Legend has it that Kin, Maya for the Sun, took possession of the temple through the hollow space of its doors, whose frames give a reverential embrace to the celestial orb. 4 Ruta ORIENTE 1 | EAST route 1 HACIENDA SAN ILDEFONSO TEYA. (1683). Admire al entrar, la magnificencia de la CASA PRINCIPAL, bello estilo neoclásico. CHICHEN ITZA. (Mouth of the well of the water witch): One of the SEVEN MARVELS OF THE MODERN WORLD, even a week is not enough to see its dozens of monuments.

Few cultures in world history have shown such fascination with time measurement as the Maya, which is clear in THE PYRAMID OF KUKULCÁN (the Plumed Serpent), or EL CASTILLO. It is symbolic of the Mayan calendar. For example, the Mayan solar year had 365 days; each of the four staircases has 91 steps = 364 + the top platform = 365. The Maya divided their year into 18 months of 20 days and 5 unlucky days; the main staircase has 9 bases x its 2 sides = 18. Also, the Mayan cycle of years happened every 52 years; the 9 bases of the pyramid have 26 panels x the 2 sides = 52.

Now that’s synchronicity! Within the pyramid is another pyramid with a Chacmool figure and a jaguar throne. On the Spring (21 March) and Fall (21 September) equinoxes a phenomenon mixing astronomy, mathematics, chronology, geometry and religion occurs when the plumed serpent Kukulkán descends amid light and shadow to receive homage. There’s nothing else like it on earth! SACRED CENOTE, dedicated to Chaak (the rain god), this wide, impressive and terrifying sinkhole received richly attired maidens in sacrifice. BALL COURT: largest in Mesoamerica and host to the deeply ritualistic ball game. Bas-reliefs of interlaced serpents cover the rings and images of ball players appear along the lower portion of the walls. Its acoustics allows someone talking in a normal voice at the North Temple to be clearly heard 150 m (492 ft) away at the south end. BALANKANCHÉ. Grutas. Oculto durante 8 siglos, es redescubierto en 1959. Sus innumerables estalactitas, en una sección forman el tronco vigoroso de una “CEIBA”, árbol sagrado maya, con ofrendas centenarias. Al final del recorrido, un RÍO SUBTERRÁNEO, como miles que bañan con abundantísimas cantidades del vital líquido las entrañas de Yucatán. ¡Conozca nuestra hidrografía única! Museo y Parador.

VALLADOLID: Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo (the cousin) to subjugate the indomitable, warlike Cupul Maya. In 1848 the defiant, brave Cupuls rebelled against the injustices of the time in the Caste War between the Maya and the ruling classes.

Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship. Local dishes include a famous sausage, pork roast and escabeche sauce. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. SAN GERVASIO CHURCH in the city center has imposing towers and architecture, cannons used in the Caste War are on display. MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART: embroidered clothing exhibits. S. The SACÍ CENOTE is a clean, partiallycovered cenote with lookouts, diving platforms, stairs for swimming access and a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy the magical surroundings. Valladolid’s colonial buildings, beautiful streets and warm people are typical of provincial Yucatan, and of Mexico. EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. CUZAMÁ. (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld.

CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites. CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving.

BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. A swim in its waters is a very special experience. Take a trip through the Yucatecan countryside and visit the aquatic Mayan underworld! MAYAPÁN. (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen.

On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY

has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. CONVENTS. These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples.

Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches.

Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan knowhow and hard work!

MANÍ. (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Schedule: Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

“PUUC”. (hill or ridge) region. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nahcab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts.

KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol).

Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. YAXCOPOIL. (Place of the green poplars): This ex-hacienda is now a tourist stop and private museum. A double Moorish arch marks the entrance. Hace muchos, muchos años, cuando la tierra era oscura, cuentan las leyendas que el mundo nació. Desde sus inicios el mundo maya ha girado alrededor de una aura misteriosa con cuentos y leyendas. Y aunque hablar de ellos se ha perdido con el tiempo mucha gente asegura que estos son realidad. / The legends say the land was dark and the world was born, many, many years ago. Since its inception, the Mayan world has revolved around a mysterious aura of stories and legends. And while talking about them has been lost over time many people claim they are real.

kebán y Utzcolel eran dos hermanas de inigualable belleza provenientes de un pequeño pueblo en Yucatán.

En aquel pueblo se decía que Xkebán se entregaba a las pasiones de la piel con cuanto hombre lo pidiera, y que su hermana, Utzcolel, era la pureza misma hecha persona y con bondad incomparable.

Una mañana cuando los pájaros cantaban y el sol salía Xkebán no despertó.

Su cuerpo fue hallado sin vida en su casa, pero de su piel salían dulces aromas como la miel.

keban and Utzcolel were two sisters of unparalleled beauty from a small town in Yucatan.

In that town, it was said that Xkeban gave herself to any man who asked her, and her sister, Utzcolel, was a personified purity herself and with unique kindness.

One morning when the birds were singing and the sun was rising, Xkeban did not wake up. Her body was found dead at her house, but it was possible to smell a sweet scent like honey from her dead skin.

Xkeban died and no one knew that what it said about her was a lie, but the people from the town were surprised that her sinful body might emanate a sweet and intoxicating aroma.

When Utzcolel heard about this she enraged with jealousy and said that her sister's smell would be a stench in comparison to the smell of her body when she died.

A few of the people from the town buried Xkeban, they didn't do it for love, they did it for sorrow, and from her grave a flower came out and that flower was called Xtabentún.

After many years and moon cycles, Utzcolel eventually died, and all the people went to her funeral awaiting to the

Xkebán murió y nunca nadie supo que lo que se decía de ella era mentira, pero la gente del pueblo se sorprendió que aquel cuerpo pecador pudiera emanar tan dulce y embriagante aroma.

Utzcolel al saber esto enfureció de celos y aseguró que aquel aroma sería una pestilencia en comparación con el olor de su cuerpo al morir.

Unos cuantos del pueblo enterraron a Xkebán, más por pena que por amor, pero de su tumba salió una flor a la que llamaron Xtabentún.

Al pasar de los años y de las lunas Utzcolel murió y todo el pueblo acudió a su entierro en espera de aquella promesa que la mujer hizo. Para su sorpresa, en lugar de un dulce aroma, de su cuerpo salió una hedionda pestilencia que nadie pudo soportar.

De su tumba, en lugar de flores, salió un

From her grave, instead of sweet flowers, a Tzacam came out, a cactus, and it was so thorns that the slightest touch would cut the skin. She, from the deads, summoned evil spirits and ask them to bring her back to the world of the living like a woman again.

Now there is no Utzcolel left, and the elders say that you could only find her on the night under the ceiba tree as the Xtabay.

She waits patiently combing her long black hair, waiting in the paths that men walk.

As moonbeam passing through the leaves, she makes men feel bloom again in life when they see her.

It will be the las night of those unfortunates who want her deeply, they will end their life by piercing their skin with the thorns of the Tzacam, with the thorns of her body.

Tzacam, el cactus era tan espinoso que al menor roce cortaba la piel.

Ella, desde la muerte, convocó a los malos espíritus, pidiéndoles volver como una mujer de nuevo.

Ahora ya no queda nada de Utzcolel, y cuentan los ancianos que sólo podrás encontrarla por las noches bajo la ceiba a la Xtabay.

Ella espera pacientemente peinando sus largos cabellos, esperando en los caminos que recorren los hombres.

Como rayo de luna pasando entre las hojas ella hace sentir a los hombres cuando la ven que florecen de nuevo en la vida.

Desventurados aquellos que la deseen con locura pues será su última noche ya que al acercarse a ella las espinas del Tzacam terminarán con su vida atravesandoles la piel.
