érida, capital del estado de Yucatán, fue fundada el 6 de enero de 1542 por el conquistador Francisco de Montejo y León, en la que fuera ciudad maya de Ichcan-Zihó o T´ho.

Se le dio el nombre que lleva “por los muchos edificios de cal y canto bien labrados y con muchas molduras” que encontraron los españoles en la población maya, y que les recordaron las construcciones romanas de la Mérida española. Es la más tropical de las ciudades coloniales de México, gozando de un tranquilo y SEGURO ambiente. Es el centro cultural yucateco.

erida, capital of Yucatán state, was founded on January 6, 1542 by the conquistador Francisco de Montejo y León on the ruins of what had been the Maya city of Ichcan-Zihó or T’ho. The city was so named because Montejo believed the Maya structures bore a resemblance to “the many buildings of lime and well tilled song and with many moldings” found in the city of Mérida, Spain, which had been founded by the Romans. It is the most tropical of any of Mexico’s colonial cities, enjoying a tranquil and SAFE environment. It is the cultural center of the Yucatán peninsula.

It is one of the most precious architectural jewels of Merida. It features sculptures of two large Spanish soldiers standing on the heads of defeated Maya warriors, an iconographic motif familiar to the Maya; a stout wooden gate with fine window frames of carved quarry; and interiors, now, in a French style. It was the home of conquistador Francisco “El Mozo” de Montejo until his death. Today the building are the regional offices of a bank. Admission is free. La Ciudad | The City tween 61 and 63 Street- Once the official residence of the bishops during the late sixteenth century, this two-story building, of a strong and sober construction, houses the most important collection of contemporary art in southeastern Mexico. El interior de 3 naves, con 16 robustas columnas y hermosas bóvedas con remates de piedras lisas; a la izquierda del altar mayor, que tiene gran cruz de madera, se encuentra la venerada imagen del “Cristo de las Ampollas” que fue la única imagen que no se dañó en el vandálico incendio provocado en 1915.

Imponente fachada, con gran pórtico de estilo corinto al centro, 3 puertas de recia madera, claveteadas con bronce y esbeltos campanarios. / (Dating to 1562) -61 and 60 Street-, it is one of the largest cathedrals of America, measuring 64 meters long and 30 meters wide (69 yards long by 32 yards wide). It was the first built cathedral built on the mainland of the Americas. Its style is austere in its finishes, but majestic in its dimensions. It has three naves with sixteen massive columns and vaults, beautiful walls of smooth stones.

To the left of the main altar, which features a large wooden cross, is the venerated image of the “Christ of the Blisters.”

Entrada gratuita. / In 1804 Governor Benito Pérez Valdelomar ordered the construction of this plaza, transforming an old dumping ground into one of the most beautiful parks in Mérida.

The beautiful square is graced by portals arches, where a series of excellent restaurants and bars are located. On Thursday nights, the plaza holds its renowned “serenades” consisting of traditional dance, poetry, and regional music for the enjoyment of the public. Admission is free.

2 Ruta Paseo de Montejo | Paseo de Montejo Route 1. Paseo de Montejo: -calle 47 con 58- Su construcción se inició en 1897 y concluyó a principios del Siglo XX. Es la más amplia y bella avenida de Mérida y una de las más hermosas de México. Se tomó como modelo, la famosa avenida “Champs Elisée” de París; amplios andadores, prados y árboles floridos, acogedoras bancas; hermosas mansiones la flanquean, con el lujo que permitió el auge de la venta del henequén yucateco al mundo. Recorrer esta avenida caminando o en un coche-calesa, es una grata experiencia. / (Calle 58 and Calle 47): Its construction began in 1897 and concluded in the early years of the twentieth century. It is the largest and most beautiful boulevard in Mérida and one of the most beautiful in Mexico. It was modeled after the famous Champs-Élysées in Paris. With broad walkways; gardens and flowering trees; cozy benches; and beautiful mansions flank the boulevard, evidence of the luxurious wealth that the rise of the sale of henequen, or sisal, throughout the world afforded the city. Explore this avenue on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. It is a memorable experience.

2. Palacio Cantón: (año 1911) –Paseo Montejo y calle 43- Museo Regional de Antropología. Este palacio construido por el arquitecto italiano Enrico Deserti, también constructor del teatro “Peón Contreras”, es de los más admirables de Mérida, con mármoles europeos, molduras de yeso en techo y paredes, delicada escalinata y columnas dóricas y jónicas. Es sede actual de este Museo, con interesantes piezas mayas. / (Built in 1911) -Paseo de Montejo and Calle 43-, Palacio Cantón today is the Regional Museum of Anthropology. The palace was designed by Italian architect Enrico Deserti, who was also responsible for the Peón Contreras Theater downtown, it was considered the most luxurious building in Merida of its time. It boasts European marble; plaster moldings on the ceiling and walls; a graceful staircase; and Doric and Ionic columns.

Monumento a la Patria: (año 1956) – Paseo Montejo y calle 27 A- Es en realidad una gran escultura, de imponentes dimensiones -40 m. de largo, en forma de medio círculo-, diseño del escultor Enrique Gottdiener Soto y esculpido, en gran parte en forma personal, por el escultor colombiano Rómulo Rozo. En la cara norte, el escudo nacional y 31 columnas de cada entidad del país, con su escudo. La cara sur, de estilo precolombino maya, con vivienda típica maya, una Ceiba, árbol sagra-

do maya y al centro la figura femenina de una mestiza, con vestimenta prehispánica, que sostiene la base de la bandera de México. / (Built in 1956) -Paseo de Montejo at Calle 27-, the monument is in actuality a great sculpture. Its imposing dimensions—forty meters long (43 yards)—and in the shape of a half circle, it was designed by the sculptor Enrique Gottdiener Soto. It was largely sculpted personally by Colombian sculptor Rómulo Rozo. On the north side, one sees the national emblem and 31 columns of each region (state) in the country with its shield. The south side is done in a pre-Columbian Maya style, with typical Maya house; a ceiba, the sacred tree of the Maya; and at the center we see the female figure of a mixed race with PreHispanic dress, holding the base of the flag of Mexico. Some of the vast warehouses were redesigned by the great Mexican architect, D. Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, highlighting façade with a series of giant emblems of the letter “X”, intended to resemble the scales of the mythic Maya serpent-god (Kukulkán). 4 Ruta ORIENTE 1 | EAST route 1 HACIENDA SAN ILDEFONSO TEYA. (1683). Admire al entrar, la magnificencia de la CASA PRINCIPAL, bello estilo neoclásico. Teya es uno de los sitios preferidos de los exigentes paladares yucatecos y otras personalidades que la han visitado como los Clinton y la Reina Sofía de España. IZAMAL. (Ciudad de los cerros): 500 a.C., mayas encabezados por el sabio sacerdote ZAMNÁ (rocío del cielo) quien funda el reino de los Itzáes, inventa la escritura y las más antiguas instituciones, creando la CIUDAD SAGRADA DE LOS MAYAS, santuario de pueblos mayas de la Península. CHICHEN ITZA. (Mouth of the well of the water witch): One of the SEVEN MARVELS OF THE MODERN WORLD, even a week is not enough to see its dozens of monuments. Few cultures in world history have shown such fascination with time measurement as the Maya, which is clear in THE PYRAMID OF KUKULCÁN (the Plumed Serpent), or EL CASTILLO. It is symbolic of the Mayan calendar.

For example, the Mayan solar year had 365 days; each of the four staircases has 91 steps = 364 + the top platform = 365. The Maya divided their year into 18 months of 20 days and 5 unlucky days; the main staircase has 9 bases x its 2 sides = 18. Also, the Mayan cycle of years happened every 52 years; the 9 bases of the pyramid have 26 panels x the 2 sides = 52. Now that’s synchronicity! Within the pyramid is another pyramid with a Chacmool figure and a jaguar throne. On the Spring (21 March) and Fall (21 September) equinoxes a phenomenon mixing astronomy, mathematics, chronology, geometry and religion occurs when the plumed serpent Kukulkán descends amid light and shadow to receive homage. SACRED CENOTE, dedicated to Chaak (the rain god), this wide, impressive and terrifying sinkhole received richly attired maidens in sacrifice. EK-BALAM. (Jaguar negro o lucero jaguar): (300 a.C.) Sede del reino de Tah (dueño o señor) que dominaba la zona oriente y las costas. GRAN CENTRO CEREMONIAL, edificios más significativos rodeados por 2 murallas concéntricas, con 5 entradas. ACRÓPOLIS: tallado fino de piedras, estuco pintado y conservado desde hace siglos para que usted lo admire; tumba del rey “Ukit Kan Lel Tok”, descubre sus pertenencias, pendientes de concha y caracol, tributos del mar, collares, cetro y cuchillo de mando; la fachada tiene figura de monstruo con grandes fauces y colmillos y en su parte superior la figura del rey en su trono, con vestimentas reales y su corte. VALLADOLID. Fundada en 1543, por Francisco de Montejo, el Sobrino, para someter a aguerridos e indomables Mayacupules. El espíritu rebelde y valiente de los cupules hizo de Valladolid ciudad heroica, fuente de rebeldía contra la injusticia: inicio de “Guerra de Castas” en 1848, indígenas contra dominadores; mayo de 1910, aquí enciende “La chispa de la Revolución Mexicana” contra 30 años en el poder de Porfirio Díaz. Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship. CUZAMÁ. (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites. CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving.

BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. CONVENTS. These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work!

MANÍ. (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light.

The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”.

Schedule: Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

7 Ruta sur | South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos.

Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Schedule: Open every day of the year from 9am to 4pm. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palmroofed Mayan huts. Schedule: Open every day of the year from 8am to 5pm. Rate: $50 pesos. Free on Sundays for domestic visitors.

XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Schedule: Open every day of the year from 8am to 5pm.

SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions. Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the floors above.

New architectural styles were applied as successive floors were built. Schedule: Open every day of the year from 8am to 5pm. Rate: $50 pesos.

KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. Schedule: Open every day of the year from 8am to 5pm. Rate: $50 pesos.

UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors.

THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio.

Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac.

These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Other important structures are the TEMPLE OF TURTLES, a symbol of longevity, the TEMPLE OF PHALLI, more about fertility than eroticism, the GREAT PYRAMID, a prime spot for a site overview, EL PALOMAR, etc. etc. There’s no better way to end your visit than to see the spectacular Light and Sound show in the evenings, with seating right in the Nunnery Quadrangle. La zona arqueológica aún es valorada como lugar de peregrinaje y culto a la Virgen de X’cambó quien, según la tradición, hace más de 50 años se apareció en el sitio. Por esa razón se venera en una capilla construida sobre los edificios prehispánicos. Además de su importancia histórica, el punto todavía se ubica dentro de un ambiente natural y ecológico.
