undada el 6 de enero de 1542 por Francisco de Montejo y León, “El Mozo”, Mérida se edificó sobre las ruinas de la antigua ciudad maya de T’HÓ. ounded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo”, Merida was built on the site of the ancient Maya ceremonial center of T’Ho. It is today the most populous city in Mexico’s southeast.

Merida surprises visitors by offering the conveniences of a modern metropolis while maintaining the feeling of a small-town. Its residents are noted for their friendliness and kindness, who nurture their customs and traditions with pride.

Este parque data del año de 1909, cuando la Liga de Acción Social de Mérida propuso la idea de levantar un monumento que hiciera honor a la madre, colocando así una réplica en mármol de la pieza del escultor Alfred Lenoir en París, Francia. A su alrededor se encuentra la Iglesia de la Tercera Orden y los teatros José Peón Contreras y Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

This park dates back to 1909 when the League of Social Action of Mérida proposed the idea of raising a monument to honor motherhood by placing a marble replica of the sculpture by the sculptor Alfred Lenoir in Paris, France. Around the corner are the Church of the Third Order, and the theaters José Peón Contreras and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

Construido entre 1904 y 1911, el edificio había sido residencia personal del gobernador del estado de Yucatán, el general Francisco Cantón Rosado. El inmueble fue enajenado en 1932 al gobierno estatal, convirtiéndose en sede de una escuela primaria, de la escuela estatal de Bellas Artes, como residencia oficial de los gobernadores y actualmente funge como un museo.

Built between 1904 and 1911, the building had been personal residence of the governor of Yucatán State, General Francisco Cantón Rosado. The property was transferred to the state government in 1932. It subsequently has served as the campus for a primary school; the State School of Fine Arts; the official residence of the sitting governors; and currently serves as a museum.

Ubicada en el barrio con el mismo nombre, la Iglesia, fue por mucho tiempo una humilde ermita rústica llamada “Nuestra Señora de San Sebastián”.A finales del Siglo XVIII, Juan Esteban Quijana encabezó la culminación de la construcción actual, que más tarde, en 1889, obtuvo por disposición del obispo Crescencio Carrillo y Ancona, la jerarquía de parroquia.

Located in the neighborhood of the same name, the Church was for a long time a humble, rustic hermitage called “Nuestra Señora de San Sebastián,” or “Our Lady of San Sebastián.” At the end of the eighteenth century, Juan Esteban Quijana spearheaded the construction of the current building, which later, in 1889, Bishop Crescenzio Carrillo y Ancona, at his discretion, conferred the rank of parish.

De arquitectura contemporánea, fue inaugurado el 6 de enero de 1999 para celebrar el 457 aniversario de la ciudad. Con su construcción, no sólo se recuperó el encanto visual de la Plaza Grande, sino se brindó al público meridano y a los visitantes, un espacio donde es posible gozar de toda clase de manifestaciones artísticas como teatro, danza, artes visuales, ciencia y conferencias.

Boasting contemporary architecture, this venue was inaugurated on January 6, 1999 to celebrate the 457th anniversary of the city.With its inauguration, the Main Square, or Zócalo, regained its visual flair, providing city residents and visitors, a space where it is possible to enjoy all kinds of artistic events, such as theater, dance, visual arts, and science conferences.

Fue construida entre 1543 y 1549 por Francisco de Montejo y León “El Mozo”. Su fachada principal es considerada la más valiosa de la arquitectura civil de la nación. Actualmente es propiedad de una institución bancaria, que ha invertido en su mantenimiento y la ha convertido en un museo, el cual fue inaugurado en el 2010.

Constructed between 1543 and 1549 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon, know as “El Mozo,” its main facade is considered one of the most valuable in the civic architecture of the nation. It is currently owned by a banking institution that has invested in its maintenance and has become a museum, which was opened in 2010.

La celebración del día de muertos en Yucatán, a diferencia de todo México, es conocido como Hanal Pixán, una tradición que mezcla la cultura maya y el cristianismo que trajo la colonización española. Un festejo que, al igual que todo el país, incluye una muestra gastronómica, pero que en el caso de Yucatán, suele ser única por su preparación e ingredientes. Conoce un poco de la muestra gastronómica que el Hanal Pixán te ofrece cada 31 de octubre, 1 y 2 de noviembre.

The Hanal Pixán celebration of the Day of the Dead in Yucatan is unlike anything known as in other areas of Mexico. It is a distinct tradition that blends culture and Christianity brought by the Spanish colonization and Maya beliefs. This celebration that, like the whole country, includes preparing holiday meals, but in the case of Yucatan, it is unique in its preparation and ingredients used. Here are some culinary dishes prepared for Hanal Pixán every October 31, November 1 and 2.

XEC En un tazón se coloca gajos de jícama, mandarina, toronja y naranja; se añade sal y chile, y debe ser revuelto.

A fruit preparation, it consists of jicama slices, mandarin, grapefruit, and orange slices placed in a bowl; add salt and pepper, and should be stirred.

ATOLE Bebida tradicional para esta celebración, elaborada con maíz cocido, molido y diluido en agua o leche, y hervido hasta darle cierta consistencia.

This is a traditional drink prepared for this celebration. It is made with cooked corn, ground and diluted in water or milk. It is boiled to give some consistency and eaten like a porridge.

Mesa del Hanal Pixán Hanal Pixan Table El último día de este mes y los primeros dos días de noviembre, en Yucatán se celebra el Hanal Pixán (comida de las ánimas), una tradición donde se festeja el día de los muertos, una celebración que tiene su origen prehispánico, pero, ¿sabe cuáles son los elementos básicos que debe llevar un altar de muertos tradicional? Sí su respuesta fue no, aquí se lo presentamos.

During the last day of this month and the first two days of November, the Hanal Pixán, or Foods of the Souls, is celebrated throughout Yucatan. This tradition is a regional version of the Days of the Dead, a celebration that has its pre-Hispanic origin, but . . . Do you know what the basics elements are for setting up a traditional altar to honor the deceased? If you answered no, here is a primer.

El altar

La cruz

Es el primer elemento a considerar, ya que éste define por quién lo vamos a poner; puede ser en memoria de un adulto o un niño; sin embargo, lo importante del altar, es recordar realmente los valores y la enseñanza de la persona fallecida. / It is the first component to consider, as it defines who will be honored; it can be set up in memory of an adult or child who has died.The importance of the altar, moreover, is that we remember the values of the deceased, and how they lived their lives.

Por tratarse de una celebración con influencia católica, la Cruz de Cristo, es el elemento que representa a la familia y a su práctica en dicha religión. / Because this is a celebration influenced by Catholic beliefs, the Cross of Christ, is the one basic elements; it represents the family and its faith in this religion.

El incienso

Cumple con la función de llevar el olor de la comida que se coloca en el altar hasta los familiares ya fallecidos; un tipo de invitación a bajar al mundo de los vivos y probar la comida que se hizo en su honor. / The purpose of incense is to take the scent of the food placed on the altar to the heavens, where the souls of the deceased reside. It is also an invitation for deceased relatives to return to the land of the living and partake of the food offered in their honor.

Este elemento puede variar y su uso no es tan riguroso. Su colocación es netamente decorativa. / This item may vary and their use is not rigorous.Their placement is purely decorative.

Al igual que las flores, no es un elemento obligatorio de colocar. La imagen familiar significa que estás recordando a esa persona y vas a rezar por él; vas a recordar su persona. / Like the flowers, it is not a required to have photographs on display.The familiar image of a loved one, however, is a reminder of the person for whom you are praying—and that you remember him or her.

Las velas

Un elemento muy importante, dado que si el altar es para niños, se deben usar velas de colores; si son adultos, se usa negro o blanco y en ambas significan luz, que descansan con Dios. Esto se debe a que la vela litúrgicamente es considerada como figura de Cristo. / Candles are a very important element of the altar. If one honors a deceased child, the candles should be colored; for adults, white or black candles can be used, since both represent light, and that the soul is at rest with God.The reason is that liturgical candles are symbolic representation of Christ.

El vaso

El vaso con agua cumple con la función digestiva para las ánimas, dado que esta agua es la que se toman luego de comer los alimentos del altar. / The glass of water is placed for the digestive benefit for the souls, since we take a drink of water when we eat the foods placed on the altar.

COMIDA

Platillos tradicionales yucatecos que la persona fallecida degustaba en vida. / Deceased's favorite yucatecan dishes.

El mantel

Si el altar va dirigido a los niños, el mantel puede ser de colores, mientras que para los adultos debe ser de color blanco. Su significado es puramente ornamental; recordemos que es una lugar especial para nuestros difuntos, es la mesa donde comerán. / If the altar is set up to honor a dead child, the tablecloth may be colored; for adults it should be white. Its meaning is purely ornamental; remember that it is a special meal for our dead, it is the table where eat.

Visita al Cementerio General E l Cementerio General de la ciudad de Mérida, es un lugar donde difuntos ricos como pobres han convivido en un mismo lugar desde aquel lejano 3 de noviembre de 1821, fecha en que fue inaugurado el recinto, el cual ha venido retratando, desde hace 194 años, la historia de la ciudad desde una visión totalmente diferente a la que narran los libros de historia.

Dentro de este pintoresco cementerio, puedes encontrar desde un humilde monumento sepulcral como lo es un blog de concreto con una cruz grabada con el nombre y fechas del difunto, hasta un ostentoso templo griego, mausoleo perteneciente a una familia pudiente para demostrar su opulencia hasta en la muerte.

También se puede observar el contraste cultural de la ciudad, con tumbas de ciudadanos chinos que vinieron a Yucatán a trabajar en las haciendas henequeneras o tumbas de libaneses cristianos, que vinieron en busca de mejores oportunidades para vivir o huyendo de la guerra en-

¡Ya viene el Paseo de las Ánimas!

Este mes de Octubre Mérida se vestirá nuevamente de tradición con la edición 2015 del “Paseo de las Ánimas”, evento que organiza el Ayuntamiento de Mérida desde hace 8 años, para preservar y difundir las tradiciones yucatecas.

On october, Merida will dress up again with tradition for the 2015 annual “Paseo de las Animas,” or “Stroll of the Spirits.” It is an event organized by Merida city government for the past eight years, and is intended to preserve and disseminate Yucatecan traditions.

E

l evento se ha consolidado en el gusto de locales y turistas. La edición 2014 logró una afluencia de más de 40,000 personas.

El Ayuntamiento, encabezado por el Alcalde Mauricio Vila Dosal, dispuso para este año de una amplia variedad de atractivos, además de los más de 250 tradicionales altares de muertos que se instalan a través de todo el derrotero. En este programa participarán trovadores, grupos musicales, ejecutantes de música prehispánica, el ballet del Ayuntamiento, entre otros. Se realizarán ceremonias mayas, habrá lectura de cuentos y leyendas, además de una exposición fotográfica y pictórica del tema.

El Paseo de las Ánimas empieza en el Cementerio General y termina en la Ermita de Santa Isabel. Es protagonizado por niños, jóvenes y adultos que desfilan caracterizados de difuntos, ataviados con la indumentaria regional, y portando velas y flores. Durante el recorrido realizan cánticos y rezos representando la visita que, según la tradición, hacen las ánimas al mundo de los vivos.

Los altares tienen la finalidad de recibir a los difuntos con el tradicional “Hanal pixán”, o comida de ánimas, que incluye guisos, dulces y bebidas característicos de estas fechas, así como flores, veladoras, incienso y cruces de madera.

El “Paseo de las Ánimas” se ha convertido en

referente turístico, ya que recibe a miles de personas de otras partes del país y del mundo.

Algunos extranjeros que viven en la zona, han comenzado a participar instalando sus altares a las puertas de sus viviendas.

Además, los paseos guiados por el Cementerio, con explicaciones en inglés y español, forman parte de la oferta cultural del Ayuntamiento y permiten conocer y apreciar la historia del camposanto y de algunos de sus “inquilinos ilustres”, así como la belleza arquitectónica de numerosos mausoleos. El Cementerio General ha sido declarado ya Patrimonio Cultural del Municipio.

En el tradicional encuentro con las ánimas participan Centros de Superación Integral, Consejos de Participación Ciudadana, empresas, asociaciones y todas las direcciones municipales.

El “Paseo de las Ánimas” reafirma el compromiso del Ayuntamiento y del alcalde, Mauricio Vila Dosal, por preservar y difundir las tradiciones que amalgaman las herencias maya y española, como parte del proyecto Mérida, Ciudad Blanca.

Este tradicional evento es totalmente familiar y representa una magnífica oportunidad para mostrar a los más pequeños, de manera divertida y educativa, parte importante de nuestra cultura y legado maya, a la vez que se alimenta la oferta de atractivos turísticos de nuestro Municipio.

The walk of the SOULS Draws Near!

El inframundo maya o Xibalbá, es un lugar sagrado entre los mayas, símbolo de la dualidad y origen de la vida y de la muerte al que sólo podían entrar los representantes de los dioses en la Tierra. / The Mayan underworld or Xibalba is a sacred place among the Mayas, It is a symbol of life and death where only could enter representatives of the gods on Earth.

uenta la leyenda que en el inicio de los tiempos, los gemelos Hun Hunahpú y Vucup Hunahpú vencieron a los dioses en un juego de pelota, pero éstos les dieron muerte y los arrojaron en pedazos a un cenote. De los despojos surgieron sus hijos gemelos Hunahpú e Ixbalanqué en forma de peces, al salir nuevamente a la luz en forma de hombres dieron origen al sol y la luna.

En la actualidad investigadores mexicanos han descubierto una extensa red de cuevas y cenotes subterráneos interconectados, que fueron modificados por los mayas entre el 750 y 1200 de nuestra era con la intención de recrear lo que en su cosmología representa el

inframundo. Allí se han encontrado evidencias arqueológicas que incluyen al menos, restos humanos y animales, cerámica y materiales exóticos como obsidiana y sílex.

Los mayas creían que en el Xibalbá se creaba la vida e iniciaba la muerte y que el sol moría y nacía todos los días al entrar y salir de esas profundidades.

egend says in the beginning of time the twins Hunahpu Hun Hunahpu and Vucup defeated the gods in a ball game; because of that the gods killed them and threw them into a cenote. From the remains emerged his twin sons Hunahpu and Ixbalanque with fish form, and when they

came to light again, they became humans and gave rise to the sun and moon.

Currently Mexican researchers have discovered a vast network of interconnected cenotes and underground caves, which were amended by the Mayas between 750 and 1200 AD, with the purpose to recreate their underworld.

It's been found archaeological evidence in cenotes, including human and animal remains, pottery and exotic materials such as obsidian and flint.

The Maya believed that Xibalba created life and death, and the sun born and dying every day when it was in and out of the depths.

DZIBILCHALTÚN. which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber.

The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Its facades, with 1 door on one façade and 2 windows on the other, are constructed in a way that allows for an extraordinary phenomenon of light during the equinoxes each SPRING and AUTUMN. VALLADOLID: Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo (the cousin) to subjugate the indomitable, warlike Cupul Maya. In 1848 the defiant, brave Cupuls rebelled against the injustices of the time in the Caste War between the Maya and the ruling classes. Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship.

Local dishes include a famous sausage, pork roast and escabeche sauce. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. SAN GERVASIO CHURCH in the city center has imposing towers and architecture, cannons used in the Caste War are on display.

EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. The structure is also full of passageways connecting the rooms, reminiscent of the secret tunnels of Medieval European castles.

MAYAPÁN. (estandarte o bandera de los mayas): última gran capital regional maya, ahí se concentraron las noblezas de la región. La protegía gran muralla, formada por enormes bloques de piedra. En el centro encuentra la PIRÁMIDE DE KUKULCÁN, imitación a menor escala de la de Chichén Itzá, en el Solsticio de Invierno, Kin (el sol) desciende sobre la escalinata en mágica mezcla de Luz y Sombra. OBSERVATORIO, con 2 estelas: una representa un guerrero y la otra, meses del año. Vestigios del Templo de los Guerreros e infinidad de otros. CENOTE CHUMUL, ahora seco, surtía de agua la ciudad. Su CAPILLA ABIERTA, primera en Yucatán, tiene dimensiones semejantes al templo. En este lugar, Fray Diego de Landa, cegado por su celo evangelizador, manda destruir y quemar valiosos códices mayas y estatuas; el mismo Fray Diego, aquí comienza a escribir el “Relato de las Cosas de Yucatán”, tratando de corregir su error. ACANCEH. (cry of the deer) The PYRAMID in the center of town has staircases on all four sides, and stucco masks with original paint remaining. The PALACE OF STUCCOS is known for its stuccos of birds, jaguars, and bats with human features and preserving some of the original paint. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld.

CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites. CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving.

BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. A swim in its waters is a very special experience. Take a trip through the Yucatecan countryside and visit the aquatic Mayan underworld! Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. English guided “Truck” MAYAPÁN: (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen.

On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply.

Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. CONVENTS: These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan knowhow and hard work!

MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned.

Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Loltún

Ruta sur · South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos.

Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante.

Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros.

Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. Visitas guiadas de lunes a domingo. Horario de 9:30,11,12:30,14,15 y 16 hrs.

LABNÁ. (casa vieja): Además de hermosos aunque poco restaurados edificios como “El Palacio” y “El Mirador”, centre su atención en el mundialmente famoso “ARCO DE LABNÁ”: una fachada ornamentada con grecas y columnillas y otra con celosías y chozas mayas; la creación arquitectónica del “arco maya” o “arco falso”, toma magistralmente como inspiración y modelo las chozas mayas de paja. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

XLAPAK. (pared vieja): Gema arquitectónica, Puuc es el PALACIO, cuya fachada de trazos muy geométricos, presume un tablero de mosaicos de piedras con grecas, impresionantes mascarones de Chaac adornan esquinas y aparentan desprenderse del techo. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

SAYIL (lugar de hormigas): Sus 3 áreas delimitaban la división socioeconómica y religiosa. De sus edificios aún en restauración, destacan, El JUEGO DE PELOTA, EL MIRADOR del que rescataron bellísimas estelas en exhibición a la entrada y el PALACIO: tiene 3 pisos escalonados, cuyos 2 primeros sirven de base y terraza a los cerca de 70 cuartos superiores, en los que desarrollaron nuevos estilos de arquitectura. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de la fachada con celosías de piedra, fauces de Chaac enmarcan la puerta. EL CUADRÁNGULO DE LAS MONJAS: 4 edificios a cuyo imponente patio central se accesa por un arco; los muros con elaboradas celosías, tableros, figuras de chozas con techos de plumas, pájaros, monos, serpientes entrelazadas y la omnipresente figura de Chaac; estas fachadas estuvieron estucadas y pintadas con colores brillantes. KABAH. (mano de artista): Sólo Uxmal la superaba. Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

“PUUC”. (hill or ridge) region. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water.

Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts. Open Mon. to Sun. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions.

Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the floors above. New architectural styles were applied as successive floors were built.

KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. Open Mon. to Sun. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Other important structures are the TEMPLE OF TURTLES, a symbol of longevity, the TEMPLE OF PHALLI, more about fertility than eroticism, the GREAT PYRAMID, a prime spot for a site overview, EL PALOMAR, etc. etc. There’s no better way to end your visit than to see the spectacular Light and Sound show in the evenings, with seating right in the Nunnery Quadrangle.
