La Ciudad | The City Casa de Montejo

undada el 6 de enero de 1542 por Francisco de Montejo y León, “El Mozo”, MÉRIDA se edificó sobre las ruinas de la antigua ciudad maya de T’HÓ. Hoy día es el centro de población más grande del sureste mexicano y sorprende a los visitantes con la mezcla perfecta entre la gentileza de sus habitantes y el esplendor de una ciudad moderna que conserva orgullosa sus costumbres y tradiciones.

ounded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo”, Merida was built on the site of the ancient Maya ceremonial center of T’Ho. It is today the most populous city in Mexico’s southeast. Merida surprises visitors by offering the conveniences of a modern metropolis while maintaining the feeling of a small-town. Its residents are noted for their friendliness and kindness, who nurture their customs and traditions with pride.

Catedral: (año 1562) –calle 60 con 61-; es de las más grandes catedrales de América y la primera construida en tierra firme del continente americano. A la izquierda del altar mayor se encuentra la

venerada imagen del “Cristo de las Ampollas” que fue la única imagen que no se dañó en el vandálico incendio provocado en 1915. / (Dating to 1562) -61 and 60 Street-, it is one of the largest cathedrals of America, it was the first built cathedral built on the mainland of the Americas. Universidad AUTÓNOMA DE Yucatán: (1618) –calle 60 con 57-; edificio que fue sede del Colegio de San Pedro, fundado por los jesuitas. Desde 1938 es la Universidad de Yucatán. Ahora sólo es sede de algunas oficinas de la Universidad. / Dating from 1681, the building was headquarters of the College of San Pedro, founded by the Jesuits. Iglesia de Santa Lucía: (año 1575) –calle 60 con 55-; fue construida por encargo del encomendero Pedro García; su atrio, ahora con frondosos árboles, fue hasta 1821, el panteón de la catedral. / -55 and 60 Street- This simple and small church, from 1575, was built by order of Encomendero Pedro García. A patio atrium, now graced by leafy trees, was constructed in 1821, and was used as a churchyard cemetery. (Map 1, C2) 11. Parque de Santa Lucía: (año 1804) –calle 60 con 59-; construido por el gobernador Benito Pérez Valdelomar. Bella plazoleta limitada por portales de arcos de medio punto, donde se han instalado muy agradables restaurantes y bares. Entrada gratuita. / In 1804 Governor Benito Pérez Valdelomar ordered the construction of this plaza. 1. Paseo de Montejo: -calle 47 con 58- Su construcción se inició en 1897 y concluyó a principios del Siglo XX. Es la más amplia y bella avenida de Mérida y una de las más hermosas de México. / (Calle 58 and Calle 47): Its construction began in 1897 and concluded in the early years of the twentieth century. It is the largest and most beautiful boulevard in Mérida and one of the most beautiful in Mexico.

2. Palacio Cantón: (año 1911) –Paseo Montejo y calle 43- Museo Regional de Antropología. Este palacio construido por el arquitecto italiano Enrico Deserti, también constructor del teatro “Peón Contreras”, es de los más admirables de Mérida. Es sede actual de este Museo, con interesantes piezas mayas. / (Built in 1911) -Paseo de Montejo and Calle 43-, Palacio Cantón today is the Regional Museum of Anthropology. The palace was designed by Italian architect Enrico Deserti, who was also responsible for the Peón Contreras Theater downtown, it was considered the most luxurious building in Merida of its time. It is currently home to this Museum with a singular collection of Maya artifacts.

or quinta edición, del 7 al 14 de febrero, el carnaval de Mérida se realizará en Xmatkuil, en Plaza Carnaval, la cual como cada año promete estar llena de alegría, magia y mucha diversión para toda la familia; disfruta de los carros alegóricos, artistas invitados, conciertos, desfiles y más. Turismo Alternativo Outdoors Adventure

A

diferencia del turismo tradicional que busca la conveniencia de los hoteles y playas con una gran infraestructura, el turismo alternativo, que ha ido aumentando recientemente, tiene como fin realizar actividades recreativas en contacto directo con la naturaleza y con expresiones culturales locales. Promueve el compromiso de conocer, respetar, disfrutar y participar en la conservación de la naturaleza y las costumbres regionales. El turismo alternativo se puede dividir en ecoturismo, turismo de aventura y turismo rural. Estos tres tipos de turismo ofrecen a comunidades y ejidos la oportunidad de atraer visitantes y recibir ingresos, al mismo tiempo que conservan los valores ambientales y culturales.

Hacer un plan de turismo alternativo tiene muchas consecuencias positivas.

Por ejemplo, se fortalece la organización de la comunidad, se generan fuentes de empleo, se identifican fuentes de financiamiento, se conservan los recursos

naturales, se mejoran los servicios y se preservan los valores comunitarios, así como se refuerzan las formas de organización social interna de la comunidad.

Este viajero alternativo, es consciente de los efectos que trae su actividad y demanda que esta sea lo más respetuosa con el entorno. 3 Ruta norte | North route DZIBILCHALTÚN. (Lugar de Escrituras sobre Piedras Planas) (500 a.C.) Resplandece entre 600 y 1000 d.C. La respetuosa y sabia relación con la naturaleza hizo de los mayas grandes astrónomos que hasta nuestros días observamos en el edificio denominado “TEMPLO DE LAS 7 MUÑECAS” ya que en su interior encontraron 7 ofrendas de muñecas. Rutas Turísticas | Tourist Routes DZIBILCHALTÚN. Which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber. The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Its facades, with 1 door on one façade and 2 windows on the other, are constructed in a way that allows for an extraordinary phenomenon of light during the equinoxes each SPRING and AUTUMN. Legend has it that Kin, Maya for the Sun, took possession of the temple through the hollow space of its doors, whose frames give a reverential embrace to the celestial orb. When you climb the stairs, enjoy the beauty of the

temple and feel its energy. Contemplate “THE OPEN CHAPEL OPEN,” which dates from the Colonial era, with its running vault shrine.

EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. MAYAPÁN. (estandarte o bandera de los mayas): última gran capital regional maya, ahí

se concentraron las noblezas de la región. La protegía gran muralla, formada por enormes bloques de piedra. En el centro encuentra la PIRÁMIDE DE KUKULCÁN, imitación a menor escala de la de Chichén Itzá, en el Solsticio de Invierno, Kin (el sol) desciende sobre la escalinata en mágica mezcla de Luz y Sombra. OBSERVATORIO, con 2 estelas: una representa un guerrero y la otra, meses del año. Vestigios del Templo de los Guerreros e infinidad de otros.

Edificios de la Nueva Evangelización, construidos bellos e imponentes, pues tenían que rivalizar con los magníficos Templos Mayas, ACANCEH, TECOH, construidos sobre basamento de pirámide; TEKIT asemeja museo, por las imágenes en nichos; MAMA con orgulloso campanario y atrio cerrado; CHUMAYEL origen del Chilam Balam, libro sagrado de los mayas y ejemplo de arquitectura hispana del Medioevo; TEABO con escudo franciscano en el frente y pequeño altar barroco. ¡Arquitectura religiosa hispana, con genio y trabajo maya!

MANÍ. (Pasó todo lo mejor): Fungió como exclusiva escuela para educar hijos de caciques y principales indígenas. La iglesia de San Miguel con elegante fachada, flanqueada por campanarios, conserva bellos retablos, El Mayor, San Antonio, La Asunción, la Virgen de la Luz, del siglo XVII. Su CAPILLA ABIERTA, primera en Yucatán, tiene dimensiones semejantes al templo. En este lugar, Fray Diego de Landa, cegado por su celo evangelizador, manda destruir y quemar valiosos códices mayas y estatuas; el mismo Fray Diego, aquí comienza a escribir el “Relato de las Cosas de Yucatán”, tratando de corregir su error. Rutas Turísticas | Tourist Routes Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites.

CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving. BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue.

MAYAPÁN. (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen. On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty.

CONVENTS. These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work!

MANÍ. (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility.

Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Schedule: Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

7 Ruta sur | South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. (casa vieja): Además de hermosos aunque poco restaurados edificios como “El Palacio” y “El Mirador”, centre su atención en el mundialmente famoso “ARCO DE LABNÁ”: una fachada ornamentada con grecas y columnillas y otra con celosías y chozas mayas; la creación arquitectónica del “arco maya” o “arco falso”, toma magistralmente como inspiración y modelo las chozas mayas de paja.

XLAPAK. (pared vieja): Gema arquitectónica, Puuc es el PALACIO, cuya fachada de trazos muy geométricos, presume un tablero de mosaicos de piedras con grecas, impresionantes mascarones de Chaac adornan esquinas y aparentan desprenderse del techo. Horarios:

De sus edificios aún en restauración, destacan, El JUEGO DE PELOTA, EL MIRADOR del que rescataron bellísimas estelas en exhibición a la entrada y el PALACIO: tiene 3 pisos escalonados, cuyos 2 primeros sirven de base y terraza a los cerca de 70 cuartos superiores, en los que desarrollaron nuevos estilos de arquitectura. KABAH. (mano de artista): Sólo Uxmal la superaba. Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Horarios: Abierto todos los días del año de 8am a 5pm. UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de la fachada con celosías de piedra, fauces de Chaac enmarcan la puerta. EL CUADRÁNGULO DE LAS MONJAS: 4 edificios a cuyo imponente patio central se accesa por un arco; los muros con elaboradas celosías, tableros, figuras de chozas con techos de plumas, pájaros, monos, serpientes entrelazadas y la omnipresente figura de Chaac; estas fachadas estuvieron estucadas y pintadas con colores brillantes. El Juego de Pelota, deporte y culto, el “Palacio del Gobernador”, uno de los más bellos monumentos de América, en cuya rica y fina decoración se tallaron más de 20,000 piedras, majestuoso, de armónicas proporciones; figuras de Chaac, abrazadas por celosías que forman víboras de cascabel, símbolo solar; en la parte superior de la puerta

The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nahcab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guide Tours: Every day at 9:30 am, 11am, 12:30pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts.

XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade.

SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions. Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the floors above. New architectural styles were applied as successive floors were built. KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol).

Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Other important structures are the TEMPLE OF TURTLES, a symbol of longevity, the TEMPLE OF PHALLI, more about fertility than eroticism, the GREAT PYRAMID, a prime spot for a site overview, EL PALOMAR, etc. etc. There’s no better way to end your visit than to see the spectacular Light and Sound show in the evenings, with seating right in the Nunnery Quadrangle.

YAXCOPOIL. (Place of the green poplars): This ex-hacienda is now a tourist stop and private museum. Admire how the haciendas were built. The hacienda has a MAIN HOUSE, a MACHINE ROOM, with a 1913 Körtins motor, a DEFIBERING PLANT, a POOL, and WORKERS QUARTERS, which have a room with Mayan figures. TEMOZÓN SUR. (Place of the whirlwind) Seated atop the possible base of an earlier structure is the Main House, with 2 gargoyles guarding the entrance. This holds a restaurant offering fine regional and international cuisine served under original carved wood arches and with a beautiful view. The workers quarters are now finely decorated guest rooms with interior gardens. The main bedroom has its own pool.

CELESTÚN. On one side the SEA, and on the other a RESERVE with a shallow, calm LAGOON formed of rocks, small islands and dense mangrove forests.

Tunnels cut through the vegetation and take you into the deep silence, with a stop at a cenote. Take the unforgettable tour on a small launch expertly guided by modern-day Maya who respect the environment.
