Arquitectura basada en uno de los elementos claves del pueblo maya: el árbol de la ceiba, que es el árbol de la vida. Recorre cómodamente sus salas y conoce a fondo la historia y las maravillas de su antiguo mundo.

The architecture is based on one of the key elements of the Maya worldview: the Ceiba Tree, which is the Tree of Life. The Museum allows visitors to walk comfortably throughout exhibitions and learn more about the history of their ancient world.

Este teatro hace honor al famoso escritor yucateco José Peón Contreras. Actualmente, es considerado como uno de los Centros Culturales más importantes del Instituto de Cultura de Yucatán (ICY). Además de ser sede oficial de la nueva Orquesta Sinfónica de Yucatán.

Llamado también Parque de los Héroes. Su historia tiene sus orígenes durante el dominio español hasta1804, El parque está dedicado a honrar a todos los músicos de trova yucateca. Cada jueves, a las 21:00 hrs., este poético rincón colonial se transforma en el escenario de la tradicional Serenata Yucateca.

Also named the Park of the Heroes. This story had its origins during the Spanish domination to 1804. The park is today also dedicated to honor all the trova (guitar ballad players) musicians from Yucatan. Every Thursday at 21:00 hrs, this poetic colonial corner becomes the scene of the traditional Yucatecan Serenades.

En la antigüedad fue llamada la Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Buen Viaje, posiblemente por la posición cerca del camino real de Campeche, las diligencias se detenían brevemente para rogarle a la virgen, allí albergada, que les proporcionará protección durante su larga travesía.

l Gran Museo del Mundo Maya nació en el 2012 con la principal función de la dignificación del patrimonio arqueológico, antropológico y etnográfico de la cultura maya; así como el fomento del conocimiento de otras culturas, como base de su proyección social y educativa.

La arquitectura de este recinto está basada en uno de los elementos claves del pueblo maya: el árbol de la ceiba. A partir de este elemento se desarrolla un desplazamiento que abarca espacios como la sala principal de recepción, salas de exhibición permanente, salas de exhibición temporal, sala de usos múltiples, área infantil, sala de proyección cinematográfica, terrazas y jardines, entre otros.

La visita se inicia con un panorama de lo que significa el territorio de la etnia maya, sus costumbres, su historia, sus ritos y el paso del tiempo hasta llegar a lo que somos ahora.

El Gran Museo del Mundo maya permite recorrer cómodamente sus salas y aprovechar los espacios exteriores para tomarse un descanso entre una y otra sala, lo que permite hacer la visita mucho más descansada y relajada, además de poder disfrutar plenamente de la arquitectura.

he Great Museum of the Maya World was initiated in 2012 with the principal mission to edify the archaeological, anthropological and ethnographic dignity and patrimony of Maya culture. In addition, it was charged with the dissemination of knowledge of other cultures, in order to fulfill its social and educational founding objectives.

The architecture of this museum itself is based on one of the key elements of the Maya worldview: the Ceiba Tree, which is the Tree of Life. From this mythological element the museum embarks on its narrative, covering these themes in the main reception room, permanent exhibition halls, temporary exhibition halls, multi-purpose room, playground, film projection room, terraces and gardens, among others spaces.

A visit begins with a panoramic overview of the meaning of the Maya ethnic identity in the region, their customs, their history, and their rituals across the ages until we arrive at the present day.

The Great Museum of the Maya World allows visitors to walk comfortably throughout exhibitions and take advantage of the outdoor spaces to take a break between touring one hall and the next.This allows museum goers to make their visit much more restful and relaxed, in addition to allowing visitors to enjoy fully the architecture of the museum.

Markets throughout Mexico are a mixture of the mercantile traditions of the pre-Hispanic peoples of Mesoamerica and the bazaars of the Middle East. At present there are of dozens of individual stalls that sell from fruits, vegetables, to meats and spices; from handicrafts and clothing, to flowers, toys, shoes and religious articles.

In the City of Mérida there are several markets with these unique characteristics. The most representative, however, is the market of Santa Ana, located in the district with the neighborhood of the same name, and the Lucas de Gálvez market located in the heart of the city center.

In both markets, visitors can experience part of the Yucatecan culture, as well as all the colors, textures, aromas and flavors that are characteristic of Mérida, known as the White City.

Mérida estará el próximo viernes 31 de octubre de nuevo ante los ojos del mundo, al realizarse la edición 2014 del “Paseo de las Ánimas”, evento tradicional y turístico único organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Mérida, que en 2013 congregó a más de 20 mil personas y se ha convertido en un espectáculo imperdible en las fechas de difuntos.

or segundo año y para mayor disfrute de meridanos y visitantes, el “Paseo de las Ánimas” realizará su derrotero desde el Cementerio General hasta el Arco de San Juan, y contará con una gran variedad de atractivos para el turismo local, nacional e internacional, como ya es tradición, exaltando los valores y costumbres de los meridanos y yucatecos, a partir de las 6 de la tarde.

Entre las actividades, además de la exposición de altares de difuntos, típicos de Yucatán, se podrá disfrutar de números musicales distribuidos en tres diferentes tarimas, una muestra gastronómica regional, una ceremonia maya, cuentos y leyendas, el ceremonial desfile y vaquería de las ánimas, así como representaciones teatrales.

Adicionalmente, se efectuarán recorridos guiados dentro del Cementerio General y se podrá disfrutar de las actuaciones de reconocidos músicos locales.

“El Paseo o Corredor de las Ánimas”, se instituyó en 2008 por parte del Ayuntamiento de Mérida, para que, más allá de sólo la exposición de altares que ya se realizaba de manera tradicional en diversos espacios de Mérida, denominado “Hanal Pixán”, se efectuara un recorrido entre la Iglesia de la Ermita y el Cementerio General, recreando el derrotero que las almas habrían de transitar en esos días de acuerdo a la Mérida de tiempos antiguos.

La procesión de las ánimas está conformada por jóvenes y niños caracterizados como difuntos, ataviados con el traje típico yucateco, que forman parte de los grupos folclóricos de la Dirección de Cul-

tura. Así el público disfruta en familia este ceremonial desfile al tiempo que aprecia la exposición de altares tradicionales montados con los elementos básicos que la cultura maya utiliza, como las velas negras o de colores, dulces y bebidas de la región, así como flores y cruces representativas de Yucatán.

El derrotero también contará con música ambiental prehispánica y tendrá tres escenarios ubicados en el Cementerio General, la Ermita de Santa Isabel y el Arco de San Juan, en un ambiente donde el colorido se mezclará con la tradición y el respeto hacia las costumbres locales.

The eyes of the world will once again be on Mérida on October 31 when the city celebrates the 2014 annual “Paseo of the Souls,” a traditional and unique spectacle that, in 2013, brought more than 12,000 people to this event sponsored

by Mérida city government, which it has become in the most amazing show in this particular season in the city.

“The Walk of the Souls 2014”

F

or the second year, for greater enjoyment of Meridians and visitors alike, the “Walk of the Souls” with expand its route to include the General Cemetery at the Arch of San Juan, the latter known as the former Royal Road, or “Camino Real,” that extended the Campeche City. This time the event will include a great variety of attractions for visitors, local, domestic and foreign alike and will, as is tradition, exalting the values and customs of the Meridians andYucatecans.

The event begins at 6 PM. Among the activities included are:Visiting various Day of the Dead altars typical of Yucatán State; and additionally, there will be musical performances, food vendors will offer regional gastronomic dishes, a Maya ceremony will be performed, there will be a recitation of tales and legends, a ceremonial parade including a traditional “Vaquería of the Souls,” or “Rodeo of the Souls,” and, finally, there will be theatrical performances.

In addition, there will be guided tours of the General Cemetery and you will enjoy the recognized local musical groups: “Los Juglares” and “Los Maya Internacional.”

“The Paseo, or Tour, of the Souls” was launched in 2008 by the City Council of Mérida. The mission is to, in addition to showcasing the Day of the Dear altars that are raised in several places throughout Mérida consistent with traditions, which are called “Hanal Pixán” in Maya language, is to have a procession from the Church of La Ermita to the General

Cemetery, recreating the route that the souls travel during these days according to the ancient Merida.

The procession of the Souls is comprised of young people and children dressed in the typical Yucatecan costume that represent the “faithful departed,” meaning the deceased, who are part of the Culture Direction folklore group. In consequence, the public, in a familial setting, can enjoy this ceremonial parade that appreciates the opportunity to view traditional altars mounted consistent with the basic elements of Maya culture.This includes the use of candles, black colors, sweets and beverages of the region, as well as flowers and crosses representing Yucatán.

The route will also feature traditional pre-Hispanic musical performances and there will be three musical sets located in the General Cemetery, the Ermita de Santa Isabel (“Hermitage of Santa Isabel”), and the Arch of San Juan. This will contribute to the mood, combining a colorful mix of tradition and respect toward the local customs.

l Hanal Pixán o comida de las ánimas por su significado, es una de estas tradiciones considerada como las más importantes a nivel local e internacional, por a la gran diversidad de aspectos y acciones que involucra en todo su proceso, desde la confección de los manteles, la limpieza de la casa, la preparación de la comida, hasta la instalación del altar.

El propósito de esta costumbre maya es recordar a los amigos y parientes que ya no se encuentran de una manera física, sino que nos acompañan espiritualmente; pues se piensa que durante los días que abarca, es decir del 31 de octubre al 2 de noviembre, las ánimas reciben un permiso divino para visitar a sus familiares.

Lo que más caracteriza al Hanal Pixán, es la colocación del altar, el cual normalmente está constituido por una fotografía del difunto, flores, incienso, una cruz de madera, juguetes en caso de tratarse del alma de un niño, bebidas como el atole, el pozole, agua y el chocolate, así como alimentos típicos de la región y la temporada como el famoso mucbipollo que es una especie de tamal grande cocido bajo la tierra, los dulces de pepita, pan dulce y el xec (una combinación de frutas), entre otros.

Sin duda esta es una de las tradiciones con mayor misticismo que muestran a la perfección la religiosidad de la cultura maya.

Las tradiciones y costumbres de Yucatán siempre se han caracterizado por su clara presencia en el acontecer del estado sin importar la zona territorial de la cual se hable, pues la gente aun tiene muy arraigados ciertos ritos y prácticas del pasado.

anal Pixán, which means “food from the souls” in Maya, is one of these traditions considered among the most important on a local and international level in Yucatán State. It is renowned for the great diversity in the aspects and rituals involved in all its observance, from the weaving design of the tablecloths, to house cleaning, to food preparation, and the setting up of an altar.

The purpose of this Maya custom is to remember friends and relatives who are no longer with us physically, but who remain part of our lives spiritually. The holiday takes place from October 31 through November 2, during which time the souls are granted divine permission to return to earth and visit their relatives.

Hanal Pixán, is characterized by the setting up of an altar, which is normally includes a photograph of the deceased, flowers, incense, a wooden cross, toys in the case of the soul of a child, drinks like the atole, pozole, water and chocolate, as well as other regional foods. InYucatán State, this includes the famous mucbipollo, a seasonal dish that consists a kind of large tamale baked underground, wrapped in banana leaves, and contains sweet pepitas, sweet breads, and xec, among others offerings.

Without a doubt, this is one of the traditions with great mysticism associated with it and is a perfect example of the religious beliefs still prevalent in Maya culture.

U

na buena opción para dar un paseo de fin de semana cerca de Mérida son los cenotes de Cuzamá, donde se puede nadar, bucear con snorkel y tomar extraordinarias fotografías.

Ubicado a 40 kilómetros de la capital yucateca, Cuzamá es una antigua población henequenera donde sus habitantes ahora han desarrollado un nuevo y atractivo paseo, basado en la exploración de las maravillas naturales e históricas de la región. Los principales atractivos son tres maravillosos cenotes.

El paseo empieza muy temprano con un viaje en truck, la plataforma tirada por mulas que fue el medio de transporte de la fibra de henequén durante años. Ahora el truck sirve para trasladar a los visitantes a través de una ruta de siete kilómetros en medio de matorrales y henequenales abandonados.

PRECIOS / PRICES

El precio es de aprox. $250 por truck, el cual te da un tiempo aproximado de 30 a 40 min para que uno disfrute de cda uno de los cenotes mientras este lo espera. / The price approximately $250 for the truck tour, which gives you and your party a touring time of 30 to 40 minutes to make the rounds of the three cenotes while truck waits to take your party back to your vehicle.

El primer punto del recorrido es el cenote Chelentún, que tiene una profundidad máxima de 18 metros. Cuenta con dos cuevas, la primera en el costado derecho que desciende hasta una profundidad de 30 metros y la segunda, que alcanza una profundidad de 40 metros.

Luego de este punto sigue el cenote Chansinic’che.

Tiene una vista impresionante con estalactitas en el techo de la caverna. Su profundidad es de 40 metros y la vista de 50 metros.

El último punto del paseo es el cenote Bolonchoojol. El agua se encuentra después de descender 10 metros en una escalera. El cenote tiene 35 metros de diámetro, con una profundidad máxima de 12 metros. Luego de nadar en este lugar se emprende el regreso en truck.

CÓMO LLEGAR / HOW TO GET THERE

Cuzamá se localiza a 40 km de Mérida, siguiendo por la carretera núm. 180, con rumbo a Cancún.

Tomar luego la desviación hacia el poblado de Canacín, para después avanzar por una carretera federal que lleva hasta el lugar. / Cuzama is located 40 kilometers (26.5 miles) from Merida, taking Federal Highway 180, heading to Cancun.Then take the turnoff to the village of Canacin, then proceed on a Federal Highway that takes you to this municipality.

TIPS

good choice for a weekend getaway near Merida is a day trip to the cenotes (natural sink hole formations) of Cuzama, where you can swim, snorkel and scuba dive and take extraordinary pictures.

Located 40 kilometers (26 miles) from the Yucatecan captial, Cuzama is an ancient henequen (sisal) plantation. Its inhabitants have now developed a new and attractive tour that centers on the exploration of the natural and historical wonders of the region. The main attractions are three wonderful cenotes.

The tour begins very early with a ride in flatbed truck pulled by mules, which was the means of transportation of the henequen fiber during a bygone era. Now the flatbed truck is used to transport visitors through a path of seven kilometers (4.5 miles) in the middle of scrub and abandoned henequen installations.

The first stop on the tour is Chelentún cenote, which has a maximum depth of 18 meters (55 feet). It boasts two caves, the first on the right side that drops to a depth of 30 meters (90 feet) and the second, which reaches a depth of 40 meters (120 feet).

After this stop, the tour continues on to the Chansinic'che cenote. It is an impressive site to behold, with stalactites on the ceiling of the cavern. It has a depth of 40 meters (120 feet) and the viewspan of 50 meters (150 feet).

The final stop of the tour is the Bolonchoojol cenote. It’s necessary to descend a 10 meters (30 foot) ladder to reach the water.The cenote is 35 meters (105 feet) in diameter, with a maximum depth of 12 meters (36 feet). After a swim in this spot is enjoyed, visitors head back to the flatbed truck.

DZIBILCHALTÚN. (Lugar de Escrituras sobre Piedras Planas) (500 a.C.) Resplandece entre 600 y 1000 d.C. La respetuosa y sabia relación con la naturaleza hizo de los mayas grandes astrónomos que hasta nuestros días observamos en el edificio denominado “TEMPLO DE LAS 7 MUÑECAS” ya que en su interior encontraron 7 ofrendas de muñecas. El edificio, perfectamente alineado con los puntos cardinales y cuyas fachadas anterior y posterior tienen 1 puerta y 2 ventanas, a través de las cuales se genera un extraordinario fenómeno de luz durante los EQUINOCCIOS DE PRIMAVERA y DE OTOÑO: “Kin (El Sol) se posesiona del Templo a través del espacio hueco de sus puertas, cuyos marcos le dan un reverencial abrazo”. El Cenote “XLAKÁH” (Poblado Viejo), proveía de agua a la población y era el centro de ritos religiosos. IZAMAL. (city of hills) (500 BC) the priest ZAMNÁ (dew from heaven), founder of the Itza kingdom, invented writing and the oldest Mayan institutions, and founded Izamal, SACRED CITY OF THE MAYA of Yucatan. It has three exceptional pyramids: “ITZAMATUL” a huge 22-m (72-ft) high platform; “KINICHKAKMOO” (house of the sun) just as large and built with enormous stone blocks; and “PAPHOLCHAC” (kings castle) pyramid used by the 16th Century Spanish to build their houses, and now the base of the San Antonio de Padua CHURCH and CONVENT. Its altarpiece is a masterpiece of carved wood and gold leaf overlay dedicated to the VIRGIN OF IZAMAL, patron saint of Yucatan. Its vast atrium is second only in size to Saint Peter’s in the Vatican. CHICHEN ITZA (Mouth of the well of the water witch): One of the SEVEN MARVELS OF THE MODERN WORLD, even a week is not enough to see its dozens of monuments. Few cultures in world history have shown such fascination with time measurement as the Maya, which is clear in THE PYRAMID OF KUKULCÁN (the Plumed Serpent), or EL CASTILLO. It is symbolic of the Mayan calendar. For example, the Mayan solar year had 365 days; each of the four staircases has 91 steps = 364 + the top platform = 365. The Maya

divided their year into 18 months of 20 days and 5 unlucky days; the main staircase has 9 bases x its 2 sides = 18. Also, the Mayan cycle of years happened every 52 years; the 9 bases of the pyramid have 26 panels x the 2 sides = 52. Now that’s synchronicity! Within the pyramid is another pyramid with a Chacmool figure and a jaguar throne. On the Spring (21 March) and Fall (21 September) equinoxes a phenomenon mixing astronomy, mathematics, chronology, geometry and religion occurs when the plumed serpent Kukulkán descends amid light and shadow to receive homage. There’s nothing else like it on earth! SACRED CENOTE, dedicated to Chaak (the rain god), this wide, impressive and terrifying sinkhole received richly attired maidens in sacrifice. BALL COURT: largest in Mesoamerica and host to the deeply ritualistic ball game. Bas-reliefs of interlaced serpents cover the rings and images of ball players appear along the lower portion of the walls.

Its acoustics allows someone talking in a normal voice at the North Temple to be clearly heard 150 m (492 ft) away at the south end. TEMPLE OF WARRIORS: human figures, and eagles and jaguars eating hearts, Original Paintings remain in lower temple.

THOUSAND COLUMNS GROUP; called this for the columns and pillars surrounding its plaza. PLATFORM OF VENUS, or Tomb of the Chacmool, has an image of the human form of Kukulkán, a chronological symbol associated with Venus. TZOMPANTLI: bas-reliefs of skulls. EL CARACOL, or the OBSERVATORY, has 4 windows in its observation chamber oriented towards the cardinal points used to make incredibly precise astronomical calculations. In the Dresden Codex the Maya predicted eclipses from the 7th Century to 2392! The LIGHT AND SOUND show narrates the indigenous, Spanish and modern history of Yucatan and the Maya (temporarily suspended). An unforgettable spectacle! VALLADOLID. Fundada en 1543, por Francisco de Montejo, el Sobrino, para someter a aguerridos e indomables Mayacupules. El espíritu rebelde y valiente de los cupules hizo de Valladolid ciudad heroica, fuente de rebeldía contra la injusticia: inicio de “Guerra de Castas” en 1848, indígenas contra dominadores; mayo de 1910, aquí enciende “La chispa de la Revolución Mexicana” contra 30 años en el poder de Porfirio Díaz.

Creativa y fina gastronomía: longaniza, lomitos, escabeche y más. Hermosos edificios de la Colonia: ex CONVENTO DE SAN BERNARDINO (1553), construido sobre las rocas de un enorme cenote; retablo principal de finas maderas talladas, cubiertas con oro en hojas; la imagen de la V. de Guadalupe tiene 400 años. EK-BALAM. (Jaguar negro o lucero jaguar): (300 a.C.) Sede del reino de Tah (dueño o señor) que dominaba la zona oriente y las costas. ACRÓPOLIS: tallado fino de piedras, estuco pintado y conservado desde hace siglos para que usted lo admire; tumba del rey “Ukit Kan Lel Tok”, descubre sus pertenencias, pendientes de concha y caracol, tributos del mar, collares, cetro y cuchillo de mando; la fachada tiene figura de monstruo con grandes fauces y colmillos y en su parte superior la figura del rey en su trono, con vestimentas reales y su corte. Through a single skylight beam the rays of Kin (the Sun), filling the crystalline, turquoise waters with vibrant light. EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court.

The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. The structure is also full of passageways connecting the rooms, reminiscent of the secret tunnels of Medieval European castles. Look for the winged figures that are very similar to angels.

CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route.

The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors.

CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. CONVENTS: These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches. Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work!

MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility.

Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light.

The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”. Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. Visitas guiadas de lunes a domingo. Horario de 9:30,11,12:30,14,15 y 16 hrs.

LABNÁ. (casa vieja): Además de hermosos aunque poco restaurados edificios como “El Palacio” y “El Mirador”, centre su atención en el mundialmente famoso “ARCO DE LABNÁ”: una fachada ornamentada con grecas y columnillas y otra con celosías y chozas mayas; la creación arquitectónica del “arco maya” o “arco falso”, toma magistralmente “PUUC”. (hill or ridge) region. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure.

The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts.

This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts. Open Mon. to Sun. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions.

Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the

SAYIL (lugar de hormigas): Sus 3 áreas delimitaban la división socioeconómica y religiosa. De sus edificios aún en restauración, destacan, El JUEGO DE PELOTA, EL MIRADOR del que rescataron bellísimas estelas en exhibición a la entrada y el PALACIO: tiene 3 pisos escalonados, cuyos 2 primeros sirven de base y terraza a los cerca de 70 cuartos superiores, en los que desarrollaron nuevos estilos de arquitectura. KABAH. (mano de artista): Sólo Uxmal la superaba.

Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de floors above. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming.

Other important structures are the TEMPLE OF TURTLES, a symbol of longevity, the TEMPLE OF PHALLI, more about fertility than eroticism, the GREAT PYRAMID, a prime spot for a site overview, EL PALOMAR, etc. etc. There’s no better way to end your visit than to see the spectacular Light and Sound show in the evenings, with seating right in the Nunnery Quadrangle.
