Yucatecan Trova, Voice and Music of the Soul

S

e dice que la música es una de las mayores expresiones del ser humano, y Yucatán dentro de este ámbito artístico, se caracteriza por su trova, un estilo rítmico que se encuentra basado en tres géneros musicales: el bambuco, de origen colombiano; el bolero y la clave de ascendencia cubana.

La historia de este ritmo musical, remota a finales del siglo XIX, con Cirilo Baqueiro Preve, trovador y compositor de diversos temas románticos y festivos, a quien también se le reconoce como el padre de la canción yucateca; la cual consta básicamente de cinco instrumentos: dos guitarras requintas, dos guitarras sextas españolas y un guitarrón.

El gran romanticismo que inspira la trova yucateca, la transformó en la preferida para las famosas serenatas musicales, las cuales con el tiempo se convirtieron en parte de la cultura y tradición del estado.

Incluso, actualmente al anochecer, los grupos de trovadores se reúnen a lo largo de Plaza Grande, para prestar sus servicios a quien quiera deleitar a su pareja con este hermoso estilo musical.

Del mismo modo, también es tradición, todos los jueves por la noche (9:00 pm), concurrir a la Plaza de Santa Lucía en el centro de la ciudad, para escuchar la serenata semanal que se ofrece gratuitamente para el público local y foráneo.

I

t is said that music is one of the greatest expressions of which human beings are capable, and Yucatán , within this artistic tradition, is renowned for its Trova music.Trova is a rhythmic musical style that has its origins on three musical genres: the Bambuco, of Colombian origin; the bolero; and the notes of Cuban heritage.

The history of this musical rhythm, which dates back to end of the 19th century, lies with Cyril Baqueiro Preve, a troubadour and composer of various compositions, romantic and festive, who is recognized as the father of the Yucatecan song. Trova music consists of the use of five instruments: two five-string rhythm guitars (guitarras requintas), two Spanish six-string guitars (guitarras sextas) and a deep-bodied Mexican six-string acoustic bass (guitarrón).

He transformed the great romanticism that inspires the Yucatecan Trova from the famous musical serenades which, over time, have become part of the culture and tradition of the State. Even today in the evenings, groups of troubadours gather along Plaza Grande, or Main Square, to provide their musical services to anyone who wants to delight his or her partner with a beautiful musical song.

At the same time, note that it is also a tradition that every Thursday night at 9 PM, the public gathers at the Plaza de Santa Lucia in the center of the city’s historic center to listen to the weekly serenade.

Offered as a free concert, it is open to local residents and visitors alike.

Fundada el 6 de enero de 1542 por Francisco de Montejo y León, “El Mozo”, MÉRIDA se edificó sobre las ruinas de la antigua ciudad maya de T’HÓ. Hoy día es el centro de población más grande del sureste mexicano y sorprende a los visitantes con la mezcla perfecta entre la gentileza de sus habitantes y el esplendor de una ciudad moderna que conserva orgullosa sus costumbres y tradiciones. / Founded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo”, Merida was built on the site of the ancient Maya ceremonial center of T’Ho. It is today the most populous city in Mexico’s southeast.

Merida surprises visitors by offering the conveniences of a modern metropolis while maintaining the feeling of a small-town. Its residents are noted for their friendliness and kindness, who nurture their customs and traditions with pride.

l recorrido principal para conocer la ciudad comienza en la Plaza Grande, ubicada en el corazón de la ciudad, que al norte muestra el Palacio de Gobierno, sede del ejecutivo estatal y celoso guardián de los murales y pinturas de Fernando Castro Pacheco, orgullo de la pintura yucateca. Al sur se encuentra la Casa Montejo (1549), considerada la más bella obra civil de arte plateresco de México y que pertenece a una institución bancaria que le ha dado los cuidados pertinentes para que sigamos disfrutando su belleza.

Al oeste está la Catedral de San Ildefonso (1561) siendo la primera que se edificó en tierra firme en América y la segunda del Nuevo Mundo. Es santuario del venerado Cristo de las Ampollas y del Cristo de la Unidad. Junto a Catedral se ubica el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY), (antes Palacio Episcopal), edificio colonial que

alberga la colección de arte contemporáneo más importante del sureste. Al este, el Palacio Municipal (1736) ostenta el más antiguo escudo de armas de Mérida. Actualmente es sede del H. Ayuntamiento y la Presidencia Municipal.

En la esquina de Calle 62 con 61 se ubica el Centro Cultural de Mérida Olimpo (1988), recinto que juega un papel primordial en la vida cultural de la ciudad; alberga al Planetario Arcadio Poveda Ricalde y es sede de exposiciones a lo largo del año. Sobre la Calle 62, el Teatro Armando Manzanero (antes Mérida), es un importante foro cultural con iluminación, decoración y arquitectura de impecable belleza. Ya sobre la Calle 60, se pueden visitar el Parque Hidalgo, la Iglesia de Jesús con sus bellos retablos y tallados; el Teatro Peón Contreras, uno de los mejores del país; el edificio central de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan y más adel-

Esto da pie para comenzar el recorrido por Paso de Montejo, corredor que impresiona a los visitantes con sus prados, andadores y espléndidas mansiones, como el Palacio Cantón, sede actual del Museo de Antropología e Historia de Yucatán que exalta la gran colección de piezas y reliquias mayas con su magnífica arquitectura. Continua el paseo admirando los edificios, casonas y construcciones del paseo, los cafés, restaurantes y tiendas hasta llegar al Monumento a la Bandera, escultura tallada en cantera rosa de Ticul por Rómulo Rozo, que nos narra la historia de México. Más al norte comienza la avenida Prolongación de Montejo, que funciona como la principal arteria de bares, restaurantes y centros comerciales importantes como Gran Plaza, el Centro de Convenciones Yucatán Siglo XXI, remodelado por el afamado arquitecto Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, y Plaza Galerías, con sus lujosas tiendas, boutiques y una pista de hielo que es el deleite de chicos y grandes. ¡Disfruta de la Blanca, Noble y Siempre Bella Mérida!

T

he most popular way to tour the city on foot begins in the Plaza Grande, also known as the Zocalo, located in the heart of the Historic Center. To the north one finds the Governor’s Palace, where the state´s executive offices are located, and where the spectacular murals by Fernando Castro Pacheco, depicting Yucatan’s history, are housed.To the south one finds Casa Montejo (1549), considered one of the most beautiful examples of Plateresque colonial architecture in Mexico.

Today, the building houses the regional offices of Banamex Bank, and the Museo Casa Montejo, which is open to the public, and free of charge.

To the west is the Cathedral of San Ildefonso (1561), which was the first Cathedral built on the mainland of the American continent. (Only the cathedral in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is older.) The Cathedral houses the Christ of the Blisters and the Christ of Unity. Immediately to the south of the Cathedral is the Contemporary Museum of Modern Art (MACAY), which occupies the former Bishop’s Palace.The MACAY houses the most important collection of contemporary art in the region. Finally, to the east is City Hall (1736), which boasts the oldest Coat of Arms in Mérida. It is the current location of municipal mayor’s offices.

On the corner of Calle 62 and Calle 61 one finds the Olimpo Cultural Center of Merida (1988), a contemporary complex that plays an important role in the city’s cultural life. It houses the Arcadio Poveda Ricalde Planetarium and is the site for exhibitions throughout the year.

As you continue your walking tour, head north along Calle 62. The Armando Manzanero Theater (formerly the Mérida Theater), is an important cultural forum, renowned for its period lighting, décor and mid-20th century Art Deco architectural design.

Make your way one block east to Calle 60, you will come upon Parque Hidalgo and the Church of Jesus, noted for its beautiful altar pieces and carvings.

Head north and you will come upon the Peon Contreras Theater & Opera House, considered one of the finest in the country. Opposite the theater is the main campus of the Autonomous University of Yucatan. One block north is the Santa Lucia Park, decorated with statues commemorating Yucatecan literary figures. On Thursday evenings the traditionalYucatecan Serenade takes place in the park, free of charge. On Sundays, the park is the site of a traditional handicraft and antiques market, along with stalls featuring regional food.

A few blocks north, turning right (east) on Calle 47, one finds the beginning of the grand boulevard, Paseo de Montejo.This vast boulevard, modeled on the grand thoroughfares of Europe, always impresses visitors who delight in the splendid mansions, vast lawns and generous tree-covered sidewalks.This is the case with Canton Palace, which now houses the Regional Museum of Anthropology & History, showcasing a grand collection of Maya artifacts within the magnificent architecture of the mansion itself. As you continue to stroll along Paseo de Montejo, you will be able to admire the buildings, mansions and structures which include cafés, restaurants and various shops. At the northern end of the boulevard the Monument to the Flag, a spectacular sculpture carved in the pink stone from the nearby town of Ticul is found. Created by artist Rómulo Rozo, the sculpture tells the history of Mexico. A modern-day extension of the boulevard, called Prolongacion Montejo, or Montejo Extension, is lined with contemporary bars, restaurants and shopping centers, such as the Gran Plaza, the Siglo XXI Convention Center and the Great Museum of the Maya World. The boulevard’s extension ends at Plaza Galleries, a shopping center filled with upscale stores, boutique shops and an ice rink, which delights young and old alike. Enjoy Merida, the White City, which remains ever noble and always beautiful!

l Gran Museo del Mundo Maya nace en el 2012 con la principal función de la dignificación del patrimonio arqueológico, antropológico y etnográfico de la cultura maya; así como el fomento del conocimiento de otras culturas, como base de su proyección social y educativa.

La arquitectura de este recinto está basada en uno de los elementos claves del pueblo maya: el árbol de la ceiba. A partir de este elemento se desarrolla un desplazamiento que abarca espacios como la sala principal de recepción, salas de exhibición permanente, salas de exhibición temporal, sala de usos múltiples, área infantil, sala de proyección cinematográfica, terrazas y jardines, entre otros.

La visita se inicia con un panorama de lo que significa el territorio de la etnia maya, sus costumbres, su historia, sus ritos y el paso del tiempo hasta llegar a lo que somos ahora.

The architecture of this museum itself is based on one of the key elements of the Maya worldview: the Ceiba Tree, which is the Tree of Life. From this mythological element the museum embarks on its narrative, covering these themes in the main reception room, permanent exhibition halls, temporary exhibition halls, multi-purpose room, playground, film projection room, terraces and gardens, among others spaces.

A visit begins with a panoramic overview of the meaning of the Maya ethnic identity in the region, their customs, their history, and their rituals across the ages until we arrive at the present day. The Great Museum of the Maya World allows visitors to walk comfortably throughout exhibitions and take advantage of the outdoor spaces to take a break between touring one hall and the next. This allows museum goers to make their visit much more restful and relaxed, in addition to allowing visitors to enjoy fully the architecture of the museum.

Las Casas Cámara o mejor conocidas como las Casas Gemelas por su arquitectura idéntica, comenzaron a construirse en el año 1906 (Porfiriato) bajo el cargo del ingeniero Manuel Cantón, mismo que edificó el Palacio Cantón.

Siendo parte de la Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Lagartos, San Felipe es reconocido como la puerta de entrada al turismo ecológico del noroeste de Yucatán. Su designación como reserva marina y zona protegida, ha ayudado a resguardar un gran número de especies marinas como el sábalo, el róbalo y la barracuda, entre otros.

No se pueden olvidar también, las hermosas playas de esta zona como playa Balneario y Punta Bachul, así como los asombrosos ojos de agua dulce, en donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar al máximo en contacto con la naturaleza.

Por otro lado, la zona de Los Barriles localizada en este puerto, es una de las áreas de la región más visitadas por los turistas nacionales e internacionales.

Ahora durante el mes de febrero, particularmente del 1 al 6, se lleva a cabo una de las fiestas más populares de este lugar en honor a San Felipe de Jesús, patrono de la comunidad; por lo que la gente de la ciudad organiza procesiones, bailes, gremios y vaquerías muy divertidas.

As part of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, San Felipe is recognized as the gateway to ecotourism of northwestern Yucatán. Its designation as both a marine reserve and a protected region has helped to preserve a large number of marine species including the tarpon, sea bass and barracuda, among others.

This port is also surrounded by various attractions ideal for spending more than a day of relaxation, fun and exploration. For example, Cerritos Island (Isla Cerritos) and Paso del Cerdo, where there are some archaeological ruins dating back to pre-Hispanic times, are ideal for exploring and seeing part of the ancestral customs and architecture of the Maya.

One can’t forget about the beautiful beaches of this area including Balneario Beach and Punta Bachul, as well as the stunning freshwater pools where visitors can enjoy complete contact with nature. At the same time, the area of Los Barriles, located at this port, is one of the areas of the region most frequently visited by national and international tourists.

During the month of February, particularly from the 1st to the 6th, one can witness one of the most popular festivals held which is celebrated in honor of San Felipe de Jesús, patron saint of the community.

The festivities consist of processions, dances, guilds and vaquerías (rodeos) that are very much fun and are organized by the residents of the community.

Se dirige hacia Valladolid, estando ahí se sale hacia el norte en dirección a Tizimín, en la misma dirección se avanza aprox.

6 km y se llega al pueblo de Kikil, donde hay un entronque en dirección a Panabá y San Felipe.

Driving out towards Valladolid on the highway, take the exit in the direction of Tizimín.

Continue driving north for approximately four miles (six kilometers) when you will arrive at the village of Kikil. From there, take the turnoff toward Panabá and San Felipe.

Ruta norte North route DZIBILCHALTÚN. (Lugar de Escrituras sobre Piedras Planas) (500 a.C.) Resplandece entre 600 y 1000 d.C. La respetuosa y sabia relación con la naturaleza hizo de los mayas grandes astrónomos que hasta nuestros días observamos en el edificio denominado “TEMPLO DE LAS 7 MUÑECAS” ya que en su interior encontraron 7 ofrendas de muñecas. DZIBILCHALTÚN. which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber.

The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Its facades, with 1 door on one façade and 2 windows on the other, are constructed in a way that allows for an extraordinary phenomenon of light during the equinoxes each SPRING and AUTUMN. Legend has it that Kin, Maya for the Sun, took possession of the temple through the hollow space of its doors, whose frames give a reverential embrace to the celestial orb. When you climb the stairs, enjoy the beauty of the temple and feel its energy. Contemplate “THE OPEN CHAPEL OPEN,” which dates from the Colonial era, with its running vault shrine.

Explore the structures and admire the longest Pyramid of the Maya world. The cenote “XLAKÁH,” Maya for “Old Town,” provided water to the population and was the center of religious rites. Today, not only can you admire it, but you can immerse yourself in their fresh and ancient sacred waters! There is also a museum where you will find objects removed from the cenote. PROGRESO, founded in1871, is a port whose shore is so shallow that it prevents large vessels from docking. This was not an obstacle for the enterprising people of Yucatán and the contemporary Maya, who together built the dock, the longest such structure in Mexico, called the “PUERTO DE ALTURA,” or “Height Port.” It is considered a miracle of maritime engineering. Enjoy the seaside boulevard, known as the “Malecón,” as a true Yucatecan by strolling and sitting on its walls, enjoying the fine-white sands, and swimming in the calm warm waters. HACIENDA SAN ILDEFONSO TEYA. (1683) Admire when entering the neoclassical-style MAIN HOUSE. Teya is a favorite of Yucatecan gourmets and others with refined tastes, like the Clinton family and Queen Sofia of Spain.

IZAMAL. (city of hills) (500 BC) the priest ZAMNÁ (dew from heaven), founder of the Itza kingdom, invented writing and the oldest Mayan institutions, and founded Izamal, SACRED CITY OF THE MAYA of Yucatan. It has three exceptional pyramids: “ITZAMATUL” a huge 22-m (72-ft) high platform; “KINICHKAKMOO” (house of the sun) just as large and built with enormous stone blocks; and “PAPHOLCHAC” (kings castle) pyramid used by the 16th Century Spanish to build their houses, and now the base of the San Antonio de Padua CHURCH and CONVENT. Its altarpiece is a masterpiece of carved wood and gold leaf overlay dedicated to the VIRGIN OF IZAMAL, patron saint of Yucatan. Its vast atrium is second only in size to Saint Peter’s in the Vatican. Pope John Paul II chose this church to hold the Meeting of America’s Ethnicities because of its profound indigenous-Spanish symbolism. Izamal is a colonial treasure of ochre facades, horse-drawn carriages and cobblestone streets where you can travel through time to the Mayan Yucatan, the Spanish Yucatan and arrive in the spectacular mix of cultures of today’s Yucatan.

CHICHEN ITZA (Mouth of the well of the water witch): One of the SEVEN MARVELS OF THE MODERN WORLD, even a week is not enough to see its dozens of monuments. Few cultures in world history have shown such fascination with time measurement as the Maya, which is clear in THE PYRAMID OF KUKULCÁN (the Plumed Serpent), or EL CASTILLO. It is symbolic of the Mayan calendar. For example, the Mayan solar year had 365 days; each of the four staircases has 91 steps = 364 + the top platform = 365. The Maya divided their year into 18 months of 20 days and 5 unlucky days; the main staircase has 9 bases x its 2 sides = 18. Also, the Mayan cycle of years happened every 52 years; the 9 bases of the pyramid have 26 panels x the 2 sides = 52. Now that’s synchronicity! Within the pyramid is another pyramid with a Chacmool figure and a jaguar throne. On the Spring (21 March) and Fall (21 September) equinoxes a phenomenon mixing astronomy, mathematics, chronology, geometry and religion occurs when the plumed serpent Kukulkán descends amid light and shadow to receive homage. VALLADOLID: Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo (the cousin) to subjugate the indomitable, warlike Cupul Maya. In 1848 the defiant, brave Cupuls rebelled against the injustices of the time in the Caste War between the Maya and the ruling classes. Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship.

Local dishes include a famous sausage, pork roast and escabeche sauce. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. SAN GERVASIO CHURCH in the city center has imposing towers and architecture, cannons used in the Caste War are on display. MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART: embroidered clothing exhibits. S. ANA CHURCH: once held Mayan structures. The SACÍ CENOTE is a clean, partially-covered cenote with lookouts, diving platforms, stairs for swimming access and a comfortable atmosphere in which to enjoy the magical surroundings. Valladolid’s colonial buildings, beautiful streets and warm people are typical of provincial Yucatan, and of Mexico.

Its privileged location, near Chichen, Ek-Balam, Cancún and Tulum, and its people’s welcoming attitude make Vallodolid well worth discovering.

EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. The structure is also full of passageways connecting the rooms, reminiscent of the secret tunnels of Medieval European castles. Look for the winged figures that are very similar to angels. CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites.

CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving. BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. A swim in its waters is a very special experience. Take a trip through the Yucatecan countryside and visit the aquatic Mayan underworld!

MAYAPÁN: (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen. On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase

in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. $2*dollars / entrance free S. CONVENTS: These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches.

Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work!

MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”.

Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Ruta sur South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. “PUUC”. (hill or ridge) region. The ancient Maya in this region developed a distinct culture with an architecture highlighted by simple forms, long planes, ornamental columns and stone mosaics with an almost total absence of the human figure. The rain god Chaac is almost an obsession, not surprising in this waterless region where harvests and drinking water, depended exclusively on rain water. Immerse yourself in nature and begin to understand the Puuc Maya.

LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen. The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts. This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its in-

SAYIL (lugar de hormigas): Sus 3 áreas delimitaban la división socioeconómica y religiosa. De sus edificios aún en restauración, destacan, El JUEGO DE PELOTA, EL MIRADOR del que rescataron bellísimas estelas en exhibición a la entrada y el PALACIO: tiene 3 pisos escalonados, cuyos 2 primeros sirven de base y terraza a los cerca de 70 cuartos superiores, en los que desarrollaron nuevos estilos de arquitectura.

KABAH. (mano de artista): Sólo Uxmal la superaba.

Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions. Many of the structures are still under restoration, like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance).

The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the floors above. New architectural styles were applied as successive floors were built. Open Mon. to Sun. KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. Open Mon. to Sun. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Sus ojos brillarán con su belleza. TEMPLO DE LAS TORTUGAS, símbolo de longevidad. TEMPLO DE LOS FALOS, no de carácter erótico, sino de fertilidad. GRAN PIRÁMIDE, majestuosa e ideal en su altura para admirar el paisaje, PALOMAR y más y más. No hay mejor forma de concluir su visita, que asistir por la noche al espectacular ¡Luz y Sonido!, en el místico Cuadrángulo de las Monjas, con música y luces que lo arroparán y lo llevarán a un mundo mágico y asombroso. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace. The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming.
