Grapes of Good Fortune de la suerte Twelve

P

ara el fin de año, las familias mexicanas y de varias partes del mundo suelen realizar algunos ritos populares como el consumir 12 uvas a la media noche de este día. Año con año lo realizamos sin saber de dónde procede, o el significado que esto tiene en específico.

La implantación de esta costumbre remota a principios del siglo XIX en el país de España, exclusivamente por intereses económicos, debido al excedente de este alimento; esta situación surgió aquel año como un acto eventual, pero curiosamente ha acabado convirtiéndose en una sólida tradición que abarca varias partes del mundo.

La idea principal de comerse las doce uvas mientras van sonando las campanadas de la media noche es empezar el año nuevo con buena suerte. Otras creencias populares relacionadas con el fin de año es utilizar ropa interior amarilla para tener prosperidad todo el año; utilizar ropa roja que permitirá encontrar el amor ideal; usar la ropa al revés para tener mucha ropa nueva; y sacar las maletas a la puerta para realizar muchos viajes durante el año.

n New Year’s Eve, families in Mexico and in various parts of the world alike often follow the popular custom of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight.Year after year Mexicans have followed this tradition without knowing its origins or the significance of this ritual.

The origin of this custom dates back to 1909 in the country of Spain when an unexpectedly bountiful grape harvest resulted in the novel idea of ridding the surplus grapes by saying that to eat a grape for each month for the coming New Year would be auspicious. Although casually introduced, it ended up becoming a solid tradition that spread to various regions of the world.

The main idea behind eat twelve grapes while church bells toll heralding the stroke of midnight and the arrival of the NewYear is that good fortune will follow. Another popular belief associated New Year’s Eve is that if you wear yellow underwear, you will have prosperity throughout the year; if you wear red clothing, that means you will find the ideal love; if you wear your clothes inside out, you will acquire a new wardrobe in the new year; and, finally, if you place suitcases by the door, you will make many trips during the coming year.

Fundada el 6 de enero de 1542 por Francisco de Montejo y León, “El Mozo”, MÉRIDA se edificó sobre las ruinas de la antigua ciudad maya de T’HÓ. Hoy día es el centro de población más grande del sureste mexicano y sorprende a los visitantes con la mezcla perfecta entre la gentileza de sus habitantes y el esplendor de una ciudad moderna que conserva orgullosa sus costumbres y tradiciones.

Founded on January 6, 1542 by Francisco de Montejo y Leon “El Mozo”, Merida was built on the site of the ancient Maya ceremonial center of T’Ho. It is today the most populous city in Mexico’s southeast. Merida surprises visitors by offering the conveniences of a modern metropolis while maintaining the feeling of a small-town. Its residents are noted for their friendliness and kindness, who nurture their customs and traditions with pride.

l recorrido principal para conocer la ciudad comienza en la Plaza Grande, ubicada en el corazón de la ciudad, que al norte muestra el Palacio de Gobierno, sede del ejecutivo estatal y celoso guardián de los murales y pinturas de Fernando Castro Pacheco, orgullo de la pintura yucateca.

Al sur se encuentra la Casa Montejo (1549), considerada la más bella obra civil de arte plateresco de México y que pertenece

a una institución bancaria que le ha dado los cuidados pertinentes para que sigamos disfrutando su belleza.

Al oeste está la Catedral de San Ildefonso (1561) siendo la primera que se edificó en tierra firme en América y la segunda del Nuevo Mundo. Es santuario del venerado Cristo de las Ampollas y del Cristo de la Unidad. Junto a Catedral se ubica el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo

Ateneo de Yucatán (MACAY), (antes Palacio Episcopal), edificio colonial que alberga la colección de arte contemporáneo más importante del sureste. Al este, el Palacio Municipal (1736) ostenta el más antiguo escudo de armas de Mérida. Actualmente es sede del H. Ayuntamiento y la Presidencia Municipal.

En la esquina de Calle 62 con 61 se ubica el Centro Cultural de Mérida Olimpo (1988), recinto que juega un papel primordial en la vida cultural de la ciudad; alberga al Planetario Arcadio Poveda Ricalde y es sede de exposiciones a lo largo del año.

Sobre la Calle 62, el Teatro Armando Manzanero (antes Mérida), es un importante foro cultural con iluminación, decoración y arquitectura de impecable belleza. Ya sobre la Calle 60, se pueden visitar el Parque Hidalgo, la Iglesia de Jesús con sus bellos retablos y tallados; el Teatro Peón Contreras, uno de los mejores del país; el edificio central de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatan y más adelante, el Parque de Santa Lucía, con efigies de poetas yucatecos y escenario, los jueves, de la tradicional Serenata Yucateca. Finaliza el recorrido en el Parque de Santa Ana con su moderno mercado de comida regional y artesanías.

Esto da pie para comenzar el recorrido por Paso de Montejo, corredor que impresiona a los visitantes con sus prados, andadores y espléndidas mansiones, como el Palacio Cantón, sede actual del Museo de Antropología e Historia de Yucatán que exalta la gran colección de piezas y reliquias mayas con su magnífica arquitectura. Continua el paseo admirando los edificios, casonas y construcciones del paseo, los cafés, restaurantes y tiendas hasta llegar al Monumento a la Bandera, escultura tallada en cantera rosa de Ticul por Rómulo Rozo, que nos narra la historia de México. Más al norte comienza la avenida Prolongación de Montejo, que funciona como la principal arteria de bares, restaurantes y centros comerciales importantes como Gran Plaza, el Centro de Convenciones Yucatán Siglo XXI, remodelado por el afamado arquitecto Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, y Plaza Galerías, con sus lujosas tiendas, boutiques y una pista de hielo que es el deleite de chicos y grandes. ¡Disfruta de la Blanca, Noble y Siempre Bella Mérida!

T

he most popular way to tour the city on foot begins in the PLAZA GRANDE, also known as the ZOCALO, located in the heart of the Historic Center. To the north one finds the GOVERNOR’S PALACE, where the state´s executive offices are located, and where the spectacular murals by Fernando Castro Pacheco, depicting Yucatan’s history, are housed. To the south one finds CASA MONTEJO (1549), considered one of the most beautiful examples of Plateresque colonial architecture in Mexico. Today, the building houses the regional offices of Banamex Bank, and the MUSEO CASA MONTEJO, which is open to the public, and free of charge.

To the west is the CATHEDRAL OF SAN ILDEFONSO (1561), which was the first Cathedral built on the mainland of the American continent. (Only the cathedral in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic is older.) The Cathedral houses the Christ of the Blisters and the Christ of Unity. Immediately to the south of the Cathedral is the CONTEMPORARY MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MACAY), which occupies the former Bishop’s Palace. The MACAY houses the most important collection of contemporary art in the region.

Finally, to the east is City Hall (1736), which boasts the oldest Coat of Arms in Mérida. It is the current location of municipal mayor’s offices.

On the corner of Calle 62 and Calle 61 one finds the OLIMPO CULTURAL CENTER OF MERIDA (1988), a contemporary complex that plays an important role in the city’s cultural life. It houses the ARCADIO POVEDA RICALDE PLANETARIUM and is the site for exhibitions throughout the year.

As you continue your walking tour, head north along Calle 62. The Armando Manzanero Theater (formerly the Mérida Theater), is an important cultural forum, renowned for its period lighting, décor and mid-20th century Art Deco architectural design. Make your way one block east to Calle 60, you will come upon Parque Hidalgo and the Church of Jesus, noted for its beautiful altar pieces and carvings. Head north and you will come upon the PEON CONTRERAS THEATER & OPERA HOUSE, considered one of the finest in the country. Opposite the theater is the main campus of the Autonomous University of Yucatan. One block north is the SANTA LUCIA PARK, decorated with statues commemorating Yucatecan literary figures. On Thursday evenings the traditional Yucatecan Serenade takes place in

the park, free of charge. On Sundays, the park is the site of a traditional handicraft and antiques market, along with stalls featuring regional food.

A few blocks north, turning right (east) on Calle 47, one finds the beginning of the grand boulevard, PASEO DE MONTEJO. This vast boulevard, modeled on the grand thoroughfares of Europe, always impresses visitors who delight in the splendid mansions, vast lawns and generous treecovered sidewalks. This is the case with CANTON PALACE, which now houses the REGIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTHROPOLOGY & HISTORY, showcasing a grand collection of Maya artifacts within the magnificent architecture of the mansion itself. As you continue to stroll along Paseo de Montejo, you will be able to admire the buildings, mansions and structures which include cafés,

restaurants and various shops. At the northern end of the boulevard the MONUMENT TO THE FLAG, a spectacular sculpture carved in the pink stone from the nearby town of Ticul is found.

Created by artist Rómulo Rozo, the sculpture tells the history of Mexico. A modern-day extension of the boulevard, called Prolongacion Montejo, or Montejo Extension, is lined with contemporary bars, restaurants and shopping centers, such as the Gran Plaza, the SIGLO XXI CONVENTION CENTER and the GREAT MUSEUM OF THE MAYA WORLD. The boulevard’s extension ends at Plaza Galleries, a shopping center filled with upscale stores, boutique shops and an ice rink, which delights young and old alike. Enjoy Merida, the White City, which remains ever noble and always beautiful!

l Banco Nacional de México, a través del Fomento Cultural Banamex, durante este mes de diciembre y como parte del programa cultural La Noche Blanca presenta “Escenas Marianas de Miguel Cabrera” una cuidadosa selección de obras creadas por un selecto grupo de pintores del siglo XVlll distinguidos tanto por su valiosa actividad artística como por la calidad de sus pinceles.

En general, la exposición desea mostrar un breve panorama de la producción pictórica de aquél siglo, en donde el espectador podrá apreciar una serie de bellos cuadros en los que los pintores de entonces plasmaron la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe sin mayor ornato, o bien otros en los que se presentan sus apariciones.

distinguished as much for their valuable artistic activity and the quality of their works.

In general, the exhibition seeks to display a brief overview of the pictorial productions or works from that century, allowing the viewer to appreciate, through a series of beautiful paintings, how painters sought to present the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, often without much ornamentation, or how some chose to present her apparitions.

This exhibition, however, complements the series of 14 canvases by Miguel Cabrera that are devoted to the life of the Virgin Mary, a pictorial narrative that probably served to teach viewers. The Virgin Mary was seen as the example of an ideal and virtuous life, the very soul of New Spain.

Muchas familias, en lugar del pavo tradicional optan por preparar jamón de pavo o cerdo como platillo principal. Normalmente éste se baña en vino o néctar de frutas para lograr un exquisito contraste de sabores entre dulce y salado.

Many families, instead of the traditional turkey, opt to prepare ham or pork as main dish. If they do so, the ham or pork is marinated in wine or fruit nectar to achieve an exquisite contrast and balance of flavors between sweet and savory.

a noche del 24 y el día 25 de diciembre se celebra la “Navidad”, la cual incluye una serie de eventos y festejos tradicionales derivados de la creencia católica. Durante estas fechas, las principales avenidas de la ciudad se pueden observar adornadas con motivos de esta gran fiesta y juegos de luces, que hacen de las calles un recorrido inolvidable.

Asimismo el fin de año, también forma parte de las fiestas locales e internacionales que se celebran con gran alegría y emoción durante este mes.

hristmas Eve and Christmas Day are, together, celebrated as “Christmas.”This includes a series of events and celebrations that have their origins in the traditional Catholic beliefs. During these days, the main thoroughfares of the city are festooned with decorations associated with these great feasts and festive lights, which make touring the streets and unforgettable event.

In the same vein, the end of the year also is part local and international festivities that are celebrated with great joy and excitement during this month.

El nacimiento The Nativity Scene

As a general rule, the month of December is full of festivities and traditions whose purpose is to ensure that the coming year will be a good one, surrounded by friends, love, luck, and money. Many families round out these rituals with in familiar ways year in and year out. Among the more common traditions carried out in Mexico and Yucatán to usher in 2014 with life-affirming enthusiasm and positive energy include:

The Nativity is attributed to Franciscan friars who introduced it to Mexico during the evangelization of the indigenous peoples. The figurines represent of the arrival of Jesus Christ to the world. The Nativity scene is laid out days before Christmas Eve, and it is then that at midnight on December 24th that the Child Christ is “laid out” in the manger, where he will remain until February 2. It is then that he is “removed,” an event marked by the praying of the rosary and handing out bags filled with candies to children.

Se atribuye a frailes franciscanos, que lo introdujeron en México para evangelizar a los indígenas. Son representaciones con figuras de la llegada de Jesús al mundo. Se coloca días antes del 24 de diciembre, noche en la cual se realiza la “acostada” del Niño Jesús y el 2 de febrero, la “levantada”, donde se reza un rosario y se reparten bolsas de dulces a los niños.

a partir de aquella noche se convirtió en una tradición más que se fue extendiendo por todo el mundo. Actualmente la idea principal de comerse las doce uvas mientras van sonando las campanadas de la media noche es empezar el año nuevo con buena suerte.

This tradition began on New Year’s Eve in 1909 in Spain when the harvest of the grapes was exceptionally bountiful. In an attempt to be rid of the surplus of grapes, it was said that eating one grape for each of the coming months would augur good fortune; the practice spread around the world and continues to this day. At present, the notion is that by eating twelve grapes as bells toll midnight, the New Year will begin with good fortune.

Adornos del árbol Tree Ornaments

Cada unos de los adornos que rodean el árbol de navidad tiene su significado que ha permanecido desde la antigüedad. Los focos eléctricos que han sustituido a las velas simbolizan la luz del mundo; las herraduras traen buena suerte; las piñas son símbolo de la inmortalidad; las campanas muestran la alegría de la época; las manzanas o esferas de navidad representa la abundancia; y la estrella en la punta más alta del árbol simboliza la estrella de Belén.

Each of the ornaments associated with the Christmas tree has a meaning that originated in ancient times. Electrical bulbs today replaced the candles which symbolized the light of the world. Traditional horseshoes bring good luck. Pineapples are symbol of immortality. Bells represent the joy of the season. Apples or (red) spheres of Christmas represent abundance. Finally, the star placed atop the tree is a symbol for the Star of Bethlehem.

Mistletoe and Holly

Dicen que el muérdago aporta suerte y fertilidad, y ésa es la razón por la que se colocan ramitos de estas plantas en los marcos de las puertas y en las ventanas. La tradición dice que

si dos personas se encuentran en una puerta sobre la cual hay un acebo o muérdago deben besarse.

It is said that mistletoe and holly bring luck and fertility; that this is the reason why sprigs of these plants are placed over the frames of the doors and windows.Tradition says that if two people stand under a door on which there is mistletoe or holly they should kiss each other.

Piñata de 7 picos.

Seven-Pointed Piñata

Las piñatas son otra parte medular de las tradiciones navideñas y son de las que más simbolismos tienen: la piñata representa al mundo con sus engaños y vanidades, cada uno de sus picos simboliza uno de los siete pecados capitales; cuando a la persona se le vendan los ojos se representa a la fe ciega, el palo con el que se rompe la piñata representa la fuerza de la virtud, los dulces y fruta que caen al romper la piñata son la verdad y cuando ésta se rompe, es el rompimiento del pecado y la seducción del mundo.

Piñatas are another customary part of the Christmas traditions in Mexico and are rich in symbolism.The piñata represents the world with his deceptions and vanities, each one of its seven spikes represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins. When someone is blindfolded, he is said to be following blind faith and the stick with which he strikes the piñata represents the strength of virtue.The candies, fruit, and goodies that spill forth when the piñata is broken open represent the rupture of Sin and the Seduction of worldly goods.

Minarete The House of the Minaret Por Luis Varela Salazar

L

a casona ubicada en el número 473 del Paseo de Montejo fue construida por el doctor Álvaro Medina Ayora en 1908. Su hermano, el ingeniero Miguel Medina Ayora, el entonces Director de Obras Públicas del Estado, digirió la construcción de la obra.

Denominada como la “Casa del Minarete”, ésta refleja la arquitectura neoclásica propia del siglo XIX con elementos moriscos. Asimismo esta residencia se encuentra desplantada del piso permitiendo espacio para el sótano. Conforme al estilo francés, esta práctica amparaba la residencia de las inundaciones que eran comunes en Mérida durante esta época.

La residencia cuenta con un pórtico delimitado por columnas de estilo jónico y un alto mirador de influencia morisca.

Sin embargo, no fue la única casona con éste toque árabe, en el extremo norte del Paseo de Montejo se encontraba una mansión denominada “Casa La Reina de Montejo”, propiedad ya desaparecida del Licenciado Alfredo Median Rodríguez.

Esta residencia tenía una torreta similar.

En 1971 los herederos de esta propiedad, los hermanos Álvaro, María Luisa y Virginia Medina Carrillo, hijos del doctor Álvaro Medina Ayora, la remozaron por completo. Sin embargo, la casa conserva sus decorados de yeso, un comedor con plafón y los muebles originales de porcelana en los sanitarios, como también la escalera en espiral que conduce al mirador.

Los jardines, donde presentemente se observa una caseta para el estacionamiento, presumía una fuente sobre un cenote, uno de los pocos cenotes del Paseo de Montejo.

Hoy en día, la Casa del Minarete es la sede regional de las oficinas administrativas de la Compañía Telefónica Axtel.

T

he mansion on Paseo de Montejo #473 was constructed by Dr. Álvaro Medina Ayora in 1908. His brother, the engineer Miguel Medina Ayora, then-director of Yucatán State’s Public Works Department, was in charge of the construction.

Today known as the “House of the Minaret,” the building reflects the Neoclassical architecture of the nineteenth century and showcases Moorish architectural elements. This residence itself is elevated above ground level to allow for enough space for a proper basement. This is consistent with the French style, and was a common practice designed to protect residences from the street floodings that were common in Mérida during this time.

The residence has a portico marked by ionic columns and a high overlook, or tower, of Moorish influence. This was not, however, the only residence with this Arabic flourish. A mansion, which has since been demolished, and which was known as “Casa of

the Queen of Montejo,” located at the northern end of Paseo de Montejo, also boasted a similar Arabic feature.This property belonged to the family of Alfredo Rodríguez; the residence featured a similar tower.

In 1971 the House of the Minaret was inherited by the sibilings Alvaro, Maria Luisa and Virginia Medina Carrillo, the children of Dr. Álvaro Medina Ayora.They renovated the entire residence.The building, however, retains its decorative motifs, including those made from plaster of Paris, the original a dining room with soffit walls, and the original porcelain fixtures in the bathrooms, as well as the spiral staircase that leads to the lookout tower.

Where a parking lot currently exists there were once gardens and a fountain above a cenote, or sinkhole, one of the few cenotes along the Paseo de Montejo.

Today, the House of the Minaret is the regional headquarters and administrative offices of the Axtel telephone company.

The origins of the present park, however, dates back to 1804 when, by official decree, the plaza was created, along with the present-day 22 arches, 11 facing east and 11 facing south. These are the distinguishing features of the park, which was built in the nineteenth century. The obelisk in the center is dedicated to General Sebastián Molas.

At present, the park is a public venue that honors all the musicians of the Yucatecan regional music, known as “Trova.” In consequence, each Thursday this beautiful historic square becomes the scene of the traditional Yucatecan Serenade. At this venue famous troubadours and the Regional Orchestra of Yucalpetén perform beautiful melodies of the more famous musicians from Yucatán.

Rematando el Paseo de Montejo (de sur a norte) se ubica uno de los emblemas más importantes de Mérida: el Monumento a la Patria, obra del genial artista colombiano Rómulo Rozo. Comenzado en 1945 y terminado en 1956, cuenta en sus paredes, la historia de nuestra nación.

Al igual que el equinoccio, el solsticio es uno de los eventos más espectaculares que se pueden observar desde el estado de Yucatán, en donde el inicio del invierno y la bienvenida de un año nuevo se celebran de una forma más espiritual y mística.

As is the case with summer equinox, the winter solstice is one of the most spectacular events that can be seen in Yucatán State, where both the start of winter and the arrival of a new year are celebrated in a most spiritual and mystical manner.

L

os solsticios, “sol quieto” por su significado etimológico, son los momentos en el cual el sol alcanza su mayor o menor altura aparente en el cielo, repercutiendo de esta manera en la duración del día. Este evento ocurre dos veces al año, el solsticio de verano que abarca los días 20 y 21 de junio por la mañana (el día más largo del año); y el solsticio de invierno el cual se presenta durante los días 21 y 22 de diciembre por la tarde (el día más corto del año).

Así en Yucatán, durante estos días se tiene la oportunidad de observar la increíble precisión de la astronomía Maya integrada a su arquitectura. Durante la puesta de sol, entre tres y cinco de la tarde, en el castillo de Chichén Itzá se podrá observar que dos caras se mantendrán iluminadas, mientras que la otra mitad de la pirámide permanecerá en total oscuridad.

El solsticio de invierno marca el final del otoño y la bienvenida del invierno; se dice que los mayas construyeron estas complejas estructuras para planear sus vidas en base a las cualidades de la tierra, naturaleza y ambiente en cada una de estas estaciones.

Actualmente, este evento se ha convertido en una tradición tanto para los residentes del estado así como para los visitantes extranjeros, asistir al castillo de Chichén Itzá para cargarse de energía positiva y comenzar el año venidero de la mejor manera y con un espíritu reluciente.

he solstices, a word whose etymological meaning is “still sun,” denotes the time when the sun reaches its highest or lowest visible height in the sky, thereby determining the duration of daylight.This cosmological event happens twice a year.The summer solstice, which unfolds during morning of the 20th and 21st of June, marks the longest day of the year.The winter solstice occurs during the afternoon of 21st and 22nd of December and denotes the shortest day of the year.

During these days here in Yucatán, one has the opportunity to observe the incredible accuracy of Maya astronomy integrated into the ceremonial architecture. At the Castle at Chichén Itzá, between three and five in the afternoon during sunset, it is possible to see that stairwells remain lighted while the remainder of the pyramid darkens.

The winter solstice, on the other hand, marks the end of the autumn and ushers in winter. It is said that the Maya built these complex structures to plan out their lives on the basis of the seasons of the land, nature, and environment in each of these seasons.

At present, this event has become a tradition for both the residents of Yucatán State as well as for foreign visitors alike. Multitudes venture to the Castle at Chichén Itzá with the belief that they will be filled with positive energy and as such be able to enter the approaching year on the right foot and with a shining spirit.

Ruta norte North route DZIBILCHALTÚN. (Lugar de Escrituras sobre Piedras Planas) (500 a.C.) Resplandece entre 600 y 1000 d.C. La respetuosa y sabia relación con la naturaleza hizo de los mayas grandes astrónomos que hasta nuestros días observamos en el edificio denominado “TEMPLO DE LAS 7 MUÑECAS” ya que en su interior encontraron 7 ofrendas de muñecas. HACIENDA X’CANATÚN. (Casa de Piedra): Ex Hacienda henequenera del siglo XVIII ubicada a sólo 8 Km. de Mérida. Hoy es un “PEQUEÑO Y LUJOSO HOTEL” con vivos jardines y un estupendo restaurante de alta gastronomía. El Sr. Ruz y su esposa, la Sra. Cristina Beaker, lograron confort moderno con historia. ¡Lo harán sentir moderno hacendado!

DZIBILCHALTÚN. which in Maya means, “the Place of Scriptures on Flat stones,” dates back 500 B.C.E. Its apogee is between 600 C.E. and 1000 C.E. The respectful and wise relationship of the structures with nature is one reason Maya astronomers continue to use these buildings, particularly the structure known as ‘THE TEMPLE OF THE SEVEN DOLLS,” so named because seven dolls were found inside its chamber.

The building, perfectly aligned with the cardinal points. Its facades, with 1 door on one façade and 2 windows on the other, are constructed in a way that allows for an extraordinary phenomenon of light during the equinoxes each SPRING and AUTUMN. Legend has it that Kin, Maya for the Sun, took possession of the temple through the hollow space of its doors, whose frames give a reverential embrace to the celestial orb. When you climb the stairs, enjoy the beauty of the temple and feel its energy. Contemplate “THE OPEN CHAPEL OPEN,” which dates from the Colonial era, with its running vault shrine.

Explore the structures and admire the longest Pyramid of the Maya world. The cenote “XLAKÁH,” Maya for “Old Town,” provided water to the population and was the center of religious rites. Today, not only can you admire it, but you can immerse yourself in their fresh and ancient sacred waters! There is also a museum where you will find objects removed from the cenote. In addition, Dzibilchaltún has a TOURIST REST STOP, a bookstore, a handicrafts market, restroom facilities where you can change into swimming wear. Open from Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 5 PM. PROGRESO, founded in1871, is a port whose shore is so shallow that it prevents large vessels from docking. This was not an obstacle for the enterprising people of Yucatán and the contemporary Maya, who together built the dock, the longest such structure in Mexico, called the “PUERTO DE ALTURA,” or “Height Port.” It is considered a miracle of maritime engineering. Enjoy the seaside boulevard, known as the “Malecón,” as a true Yucatecan by strolling and sitting on its walls, enjoying the fine-white sands, and swimming in the calm warm waters. HACIENDA SAN ILDEFONSO TEYA. (1683) Admire when entering the neo-classical-style MAIN HOUSE. Teya is a favorite of Yucatecan gourmets and others with refined tastes, like the Clinton family and Queen Sofia of Spain. Enjoy the authentic Yucatecan food and desserts like the House Flan.

IZAMAL. (city of hills) (500 BC) the priest ZAMNÁ (dew from heaven), founder of the Itza kingdom, invented writing and the oldest Mayan institutions, and founded Izamal, SACRED CITY OF THE MAYA of Yucatan. It has three exceptional pyramids: “ITZAMATUL” a huge 22-m (72-ft) high platform; “KINICHKAKMOO” (house of the sun) just as large and built with enormous stone blocks; and “PAPHOLCHAC” (kings castle) pyramid used by the 16th Century Spanish to build their houses, and now the base of the San Antonio de Padua CHURCH and CONVENT. Its altarpiece is a masterpiece of carved wood and gold leaf overlay dedicated to the VIRGIN OF IZAMAL, patron saint of Yucatan. CHICHEN ITZA (Mouth of the well of the water witch): One of the SEVEN MARVELS OF THE MODERN WORLD, even a week is not enough to see its dozens of monuments. Few cultures in world history have shown such fascination with time measurement as the Maya, which is clear in THE PYRAMID OF KUKULCÁN (the Plumed Serpent), or EL CASTILLO. It is symbolic of the Mayan calendar. For example, the Mayan solar year had 365 days; each of the four staircases has 91 steps = 364 + the top platform = 365. The Maya divided their year into 18 months of 20 days and 5 unlucky days; the main staircase has 9 bases x its 2 sides = 18. Also, the Mayan cycle of years happened every 52 years; the 9 bases of the pyramid have 26 panels x the 2 sides = 52. Now that’s synchronicity! Within the pyramid is another pyramid with a Chacmool figure and a jaguar throne. VALLADOLID: Founded in 1543 by Francisco de Montejo (the cousin) to subjugate the indomitable, warlike Cupul Maya. In 1848 the defiant, brave Cupuls rebelled against the injustices of the time in the Caste War between the Maya and the ruling classes. Also here, in May 1910, “the Spark of the Mexican Revolution” was struck and began an uprising against 30 years of Porfirio Diaz’s dictatorship.

Local dishes include a famous sausage, pork roast and escabeche sauce. Colonial architecture dots the city: ex-CONVENT OF SAN BERNARDINO (1553) built over an enormous cenote, has a stunning carved wood and gold leaf altarpiece with a 400-year old image of the Virgin of Guadalupe. SAN GERVASIO CHURCH in the city center has imposing towers and architecture, cannons used in the Caste War are on display. MUSEUM OF POPULAR ART: embroidered clothing exhibits. S. EK-BALAM. (Black Jaguar or Jaguar Star) (300 BC) Center of the kingdom of Tah (lord or owner), it dominated eastern Yucatan and even the coasts. Two concentric defensive walls with 5 entrances surround this CEREMONIAL CENTER. THE ACROPOLIS has stucco that has been preserved for centuries! Most amazing is the stucco mask of a monster on the main facade, with huge lips and fangs, and the figure of a king in royal garb on his thrown with his court. The tomb of the king “Ukit Kan Lel Tok” has shell and conch pendants, necklaces, a scepter and a knife. The structure is also full of passageways connecting the rooms, reminiscent of the secret tunnels of Medieval European castles. Look for the winged figures that are very similar to angels. CONVENTOS. Edificios de la Nueva Evangelización, construidos bellos e imponentes, pues tenían que rivalizar con los magníficos Templos Mayas, ACANCEH, TECOH, construidos sobre basamento de pirámide; TEKIT asemeja museo, por las imágenes en nichos; MAMA con orgulloso campanario y atrio cerrado; CHUMAYEL origen del Chilam Balam, libro sagrado de los mayas y ejemplo de arquitectura hispana del Medioevo; TEABO con escudo franciscano en el frente y pequeño altar barroco. ¡Arquitectura religiosa hispana, con genio y trabajo maya!

MANÍ. (Pasó todo lo mejor): Fungió como exclusiva escuela para educar hijos de caciques y principales indígenas. La iglesia de San Miguel con elegante fachada, flanqueada por campanarios, conserva bellos retablos, El Mayor, San Antonio, La Asunción, la Virgen de la Luz, del siglo XVII. Su CAPILLA ABIERTA, primera en Yucatán, tiene dimensiones semejantes al templo. En este lugar, Fray Diego de Landa, cegado por su celo evangelizador, manda destruir y quemar valiosos códices mayas y estatuas; el mismo Fray Diego, aquí comienza a escribir el “Relato de las Cosas de Yucatán”, tratando de corregir su error. Abierto todos los días de 6 a 12 y de 5 a 7. Tanto en Maní, como en la vecina Ticul, paladeará exquisita comida yucateca.

ACANCEH. (cry of the deer) The PYRAMID in the center of town has staircases on all four sides, and stucco masks with original paint remaining. CUZAMÁ (cenotes): (water of the swallows) At Hacienda Chunkanán, climb on a narrow gauge, horse-drawn railcar for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life. While passing through henequen (sisal) plantations you will be transported back to the 19th Century with every click and clack of the rails. Then you jump back millions of years when visiting the CENOTES, or Dzonot (cavity with water), along the route. Vital freshwater sources sacred to the Maya, they were believed to be accesses to the underworld. CHELENTÚN, has easy access and a maximum depth of 18 m (60 ft). Take a swim in this beautiful covered pool roofed with stalactites.

CHACSICNICHE (red ant tree), is difficult to enter and better for scuba diving. BOLONCHOHOL (nine rat holes) has nine holes in its vault, and at certain hours the sun beams through them, painting the crystalline waters a vibrant turquoise blue. A swim in its waters is a very special experience. Take a trip through the Yucatecan countryside and visit the aquatic Mayan underworld!

MAYAPÁN: (a Mayan standard or flag) Mayan nobility concentrated here in the last great capital of the Maya region. Protecting the city is a huge wall of giant stone blocks. In its center is the PYRAMID OF KUKULCAN, a small-scale imitation of El Castillo at Chichen. On the winter solstice, Kin (the sun) descends down a staircase

in an impressive Light and Shadow phenomenon. The OBSERVATORY has 2 stelae, one showing a warrior and the other months of the year. Among the infinity of other ruins is the Temple of Warriors. CENOTE CHUMUL, now dry, was the city’s water supply. Though perhaps not as stunning as Uxmal or Chichen, Mayapan has its own captivating majesty. Open 8a. to 5p. Mon. to Sun. $2*dollars / entrance free S. CONVENTS: These sacred buildings of the New Evangelism brought by the Spanish to Yucatan had to rival the magnificent Mayan Temples. Those at ACANCEH and TECOH were built on a pyramid base, and in TEKIT the convent resembles a museum with images in niches.

Other convents are located at MAMA, with a proud bell tower and a closed atrium, CHUMAYEL, an example of Medieval Spanish architecture and origin of the Mayan sacred book the Chilam Balam, and TEABO, which has a Franciscan shield in front and a small baroque altar. All are fine examples of Spanish religious architecture built with Mayan know-how and hard work!

MANÍ: (It is over – all the best) Dedicated to San Miguel, the church here functioned as an exclusive school for the children of Mayan chiefs and nobility. Its elegant facade, flanked by two bell towers, has beautiful 17th Century altarpieces dedicated to San Antonio, the Assumption, and the Virgin of Light. The OPEN CHAPEL was the first in Yucatan and was as large as the church itself. In front of this church is where Friar Diego de Landa, blinded by his evangelical zeal, had valuable Mayan codices and images destroyed and burned. Realizing his error, he later began writing his “Account of Things of Yucatan”.

Open 6a to 12a and 5p to 7p. Both in Mani and nearby Ticul, the Yucatecan cuisine is exquisite.

Ruta sur South route Región “PUUC”. (cerro o serranía): Sus habitantes asentados en tierra roja y fértil, desarrollaron cultura muy propia. Su arquitectura destaca por su forma simple, planos alargados, columnas sólo ornamentales, rica y elaborada decoración de piedras formando mosaicos; casi excluye la figura humana, sobresale casi con obsesión Chaac (dios de la lluvia) con visión Estético-Religiosa del que dependían sus cosechas y su agua potable, almacenada en Chultunes (cisternas) creados por ellos. Entre en íntimo contacto con ellos y la naturaleza.

LOLTÚN. (Flor de piedra): Grutas. En el acceso Nahcab (colmena) lo recibirá bajorrelieve de “El Guerrero de Loltún”, dios que emerge del inframundo. En visita guiada asómbrese con formaciones abovedadas, estalactitas y estalagmitas; bóvedas como “La Catedral”, impresionante, “La Mazorca”, “El Cañón” de gigantescas rocas. “Las Columnas Musicales” destacan el sonido “loltún” al ser golpeadas; “Los Haltunes” (sartenes) con agua fresca y rebosante. Pinturas rupestres de manos, animales, rostros. Fue refugio durante la Guerra de Castas. Otras galerías y cámaras, completan un recorrido en el espléndido conjunto de Loltún. LABNÁ. (casa vieja): Además de hermosos aunque poco restaurados edificios como “El Palacio” y “El

Mirador”, centre su atención en el mundialmente famoso “ARCO DE LABNÁ”: una fachada ornamentada con grecas y columnillas y otra con celosías y chozas mayas; la creación arquitectónica del “arco maya” o “arco falso”, toma magistralmente como inspiración y modelo las chozas mayas de paja.

XLAPAK. (pared vieja): Gema arquitectónica, Puuc es

el PALACIO, cuya fachada de trazos muy geométricos, presume un tablero de mosaicos de piedras con grecas, impresionantes mascarones de Chaac adornan esquinas y aparentan desprenderse del techo.

SAYIL (lugar de hormigas): Sus 3 áreas delimitaban la división socioeconómica y religiosa. De sus edificios

Sus construcciones levantan de plataformas artificiales. TEMPLO DEL SOL, destacando el Palacio “CODZ POP” (alfombra de palma enro-llada) cuya fachada presume mosaicos de piedra y mascarones de Chaac; el acceso a los cuartos ostenta peldaños, que no son más que mascarones de Chaac, cuya trompa tiene tallado de alfombra de palma ¡Imagínese qué lujo de escalera! Su decoración nos evoca el más puro estilo barroco. EL ARCO, majestuoso, era punto de partida del Sacbé (camino banco) que la unía a Uxmal. Abierto de lunes a domingo.

UXMAL. (la 3 veces construida): Una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes de México y el mundo, Patrimonio de la Humanidad… La más pura joya de arte PUUC. De más de 150 edificios, algunos, los más bellos y restaurados son: desafiante a la entrada después del CHULTÚN (cisterna), LA PIRÁMIDE DEL ADIVINO o del enano, de esquinas redondeadas, piedra cortada y sendas escalinatas, las paredes de la fachada con celosías de piedra, fauces de Chaac

enmarcan la puerta. EL CUADRÁNGULO DE LAS MONJAS: 4 edificios a cuyo imponente patio central se accesa por un arco; los muros con elaboradas celosías, tableros, figuras de chozas con techos de plumas, pájaros, monos, serpientes entrelazadas y la omnipresente figura de Chaac; estas fachadas estuvieron estucadas y pintadas con colores brillantes. El Juego de Pelota, deporte y culto, el “Palacio del Gobernador”, uno de los más bellos monumentos de América, en cuya rica y fina decoración se tallaron más de 20,000 piedras, majestuoso, de armónicas proporciones; figuras de Chaac, abrazadas por celosías que forman víboras de cascabel, símbolo solar; en la parte superior de la puerta un trono, el rey con magnífico penacho y mucho más. Sus ojos brillarán con su belleza. TEMPLO DE LAS TORTUGAS, símbolo de longevidad. TEMPLO DE LOS FALOS, no de carácter erótico, sino de fertilidad. GRAN PIRÁMIDE, majestuosa e ideal en su altura para admirar el paisaje, PALOMAR y más y más. No hay mejor forma de concluir su visita, que asistir por la noche al espectacular ¡Luz y Sonido!, en el místico Cuadrángulo de las Monjas, con música y luces que lo arroparán y lo llevarán a un mundo mágico y asombroso. LOLTÚN. (Stone flower) Caves. At the Nah-cab (bee hive) entrance a bas-relief of the “Warrior of Loltun” greets you as he emerges from the underworld. You will be amazed by the vault, stalactite and stalagmite formations, including the Cathedral, the Ear of Corn, the gigantic rocks forming the Canon, the Musical Columns that say “loltun” when hit, and the Haltuns, brimming with fresh water. Cave paintings of hands, animals and faces can also been seen.

The cave served as refuge during the Caste War. Guided tours of the Loltun caves are available from Mon. to Sun. LABNÁ. (old house): Many of the structures here are partially restored, like the Palace and El Mirador. The center of attention, though, is the world-famous ARCH OF LABNA. One of its facades is decorated with Greek motifs and columns, while the other has latticework and Mayan huts.

This is known as a Mayan or false arch and takes its inspiration from palm-roofed Mayan huts. Open Mon. to Sun. XLAPAK. (old walls). A true Puuc gem, the PALACE has a very geometric facade with stone mosaics. Chaac masks at the corners seem to want to jump off the facade. Open Mon. to Sun. SAYIL. (place of ants). The site’s three areas marked socioeconomic and religious divisions.

like the BALL COURT, and EL MIRADOR, from which beautiful stelae were rescued (on display at the entrance). The first two floors of the PALACE serve as terraces for the nearly 70 rooms on the floors above. New architectural styles were applied as successive floors were built. Open Mon. to Sun.

KABAH. (artist’s hand) Kabah’s structures, like the TEMPLE OF THE SUN, were built on artificial platforms. The CODZ POP (rolled up palm mat) is pure Mayan baroque, with a facade of stone Chaac masks. Even the doors are Chaac masks, with his trunk serving as the step. What a luxury! At the end of the sac-be (white road) linking the site to Uxmal is the ARCH. Open Mon. to Sun. UXMAL. (built 3 times) Recognized as a World Heritage Site, Uxmal is one of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico and the world... The most pure gemstone of the PUCC art. Its over 150 structures are a pure expression of Puuc architecture. Among the most beautiful of the restored structures is THE PYRAMID OF THE MAGICIAN or Dwarf, a round-sided, cut-stone pyramid with steep staircases, stone latticework on the facades and the fangs of Chaac marking the doors. THE NUNNERY QUADRANGLE consists of 4 buildings around an immense central patio. Each structure has a different façade each decorated with latticework, images of Mayan huts with feather roofs, birds, monkeys, intertwined serpents and the omnipresent Chaac. These mosaics were stuccoed and painted with brilliant colors. One of the great monuments of ancient America is the harmoniously proportioned Governor’s Palace.

The over 20,000 stones in its facade form a detailed decorative scenario with repeated Chaac figures enveloped in latticework rattle-snakes (a solar symbol). Seated on a throne above the main door is a king with a magnificent headdress. It is truly overwhelming. Los muros forman valla a monumental “Arco Doble Morisco” de la entrada. Admire las áreas y el estilo constructivo de las haciendas: amplios salones, techos altos, largos y frescos corredores; decorada con muebles antiguos, óleos. Ruta poniente West route YAXCOPOIL. (Place of the green poplars): This ex-hacienda is now a tourist stop and private museum. A double Moorish arch marks the entrance. Admire how the haciendas were built, with open rooms, high ceilings, long, breezy corridors, the ornate antique European-style furniture and oil paintings. The hacienda has a MAIN HOUSE, a MACHINE ROOM, with a 1913 Körtins motor, a DEFIBERING PLANT, a POOL, and WORKERS QUARTERS, which have a room with Mayan figures. TEMOZÓN SUR. (Place of the whirlwind) Seated atop the possible base of an earlier structure is the Main House, with 2 gargoyles guarding the entrance. This holds a restaurant offering fine regional and international cuisine served under original carved wood arches and with a beautiful view. The workers quarters are now finely decorated guest rooms with interior gardens. The main bedroom has its own pool.
