H

oy desperté gracias a DIOS en un México libre, donde los hombres y mujeres que realmente quieren salir adelanté, lo hacen. Con pasión, con trabajo diario y con esfuerzo sobresalen del resto que se empeña solo en quejarse, en señalar lo que esta mal hecho y lo que deberían hacer los demás para ellos vivir mejor, en pocas semanas sabremos si este país que tanto queremos despertará para bien, o vivirá una realidad diferente, donde solo una voz cuente.

Después de disfrutar al máximo unos días de paz y tranquilidad con mi hijo, visitando una semana la maravillosa Riviera Maya en uno de nuestros hoteles predilectos y una semana en las bellas montañas de Aspen & Snowmass para cerrar con broche de oro la temporada de SKI, donde decidí no distraer mi tiempo con otra cosa mas que no fuera estar con el al cien por ciento, tuve la oportunidad de analizar el entorno donde vivimos, en el que cada uno de nosotros tiene plena conciencia de su propia realidad, como centro del universo, lo que sueñas y piensas lo atraes, ¿quieres paz?, piensa en paz, ¿quieres caos?, piensa en conflictos, en problemas e inestabilidad, ¿quieres felicidad y prosperidad? Piensa y sueña con ese futuro mejor para ti y los tuyos, sin importar dónde estés, date una oportunidad para responderte una sola pregunta, ¿eres feliz?

La novia de un gran amigo me hizo esa simple pregunta y la verdad respondí que si y que sería muy feliz si pudiera asegurarme que mis hijos gozarán de plena salud, lo cual es una respuesta que todo padre quisiera poder dar, sin embargo, me volvió a cuestionar, ¿qué te falta a ti, Paul, para ser feliz? La verdad no pude responder, ya que gracias a Dios, me considero muy afortunado ya que no me falta nada para ser feliz, podrías pensar que mi respuesta es muy arrogante, sin embargo de corazón puedo responder con total seguridad que no me falta nada, ya que tengo salud, tengo una familia, aún gozo de tener a mi madre, hermanos, tíos, primos, hija e hijo, una infinidad de amigos y conocidos que me incentivan a seguir creciendo y por qué no mejorando como ser humano y empresario, soy

muy afortunado desde luego por tener un hogar y los medios necesarios para salir adelante.

Desde luego, creo que todos siempre debemos querer mas, anhelar mas, por supuesto que siempre podríamos tener mas solvencia, ahorros y lujos que compartir con los que mas queremos, en lo personal creo que todo esto, no es lo es todo en la vida, si no te levantas por la mañana con ganas de hacer que las cosas pasen, dejar este mundo mejor de como lo encontraste, dar lo mejor de ti a tu circulo cercano y en tu sociedad.

Siento que nuestro objetivo debería ser encontrar ese balance perfecto, entre nuestro trabajo y nuestra vida personal, por eso lancé recientemente mi nuevo programa de entrevistas, WHO IS WHO in Monterrey, que te invito a disfrutar todos los jueves en SKY en el canal 152 a las 10:00 pm y por Televisa en el Canal 4 a las 10:30 pm los domingos, en este nuevo proyecto llevamos a la televisión y medios digitales lo que hemos hecho desde hace 19 años, con nuestra revista BCM The Business Club Magazine, para compartir la visión, experiencia y la vida de los lideres de opinión mas relevantes de nuestra ciudad y próximamente en todo el país, mi misión es poder hacerles estas preguntas que nos ayudarán a despertar como sociedad, que nos motivarán a seguir nuestros sueños, a luchar con ahínco por lo que realmente vale la pena y a dejar de quejarnos por las altas y bajas de nuestro paso por este mundo, seguramente nos enseñarán como ellos también vencieron esas barreras ideológicas, físicas y económicas que se nos presentan a todos en el camino.

anerai amplía las dimensiones de su colección de instrumentos de buceo con una oferta que combina dos materiales innovadores por primera vez: Panerai GoldtechTM y CarbotechTM. Aunque aparentemente antitéticos, el emparejamiento es sorprendentemente complementario en el Submersible Goldtech TM - 44 mm.

La nueva referencia hace evidente su carácter distintivo a través de un equilibrio entre elegancia disciplinada y atletismo audaz. Su personalidad se ve reforzada por una caja fabricada con Panerai GoldtechTM, una aleación de oro con un color intenso y estable que es posible gracias a su importante contenido de cobre y enriquecimiento con platino.

La esfera presenta índices aplicados y decoración satiné soleil, un adorno poco convencional en la colección Submersible.

Para romper con lo ordinario y acentuar la actitud del modelo, se eligió un material para dar forma y sustancia a componentes funcionales como el bisel, la corona y la palanca del puente de la corona.

Este compuesto, conocido como CarbotechTM, consiste en láminas de fibra de carbono superpuestas con orientaciones alternas (siete por milímetro), agregadas mediante temperatura controlada y alta presión y fusionadas con un aglutinante polimérico de última generación.

Concebido para realizar todo su potencial en condiciones extremas y adaptado a los requisitos específicos del buceo, el Submersible GoldtechTM - 44 mm está configurado como una herramienta altamente fiable capaz de soportar alta presión gracias a características como un bisel giratorio unidireccional y fondo de caja atornillado.

Los índices luminiscentes, las agujas y los puntos en verde/azul son inmediatamente legibles bajo el agua.

La mecánica de alta calidad contribuye a la fiabilidad, exactitud y precisión del modelo, todas aportaciones funcionales gracias al Calibre P.900.

Resistente al agua hasta 30 bar (unos 300 metros de profundidad), el nuevo Submersible GoldtechTM - 44 mm cuenta con una correa de caucho negro y una hebilla trapezoidal en titanio con revestimiento DLC negro.

Habanos clásicos: la mejor selección

L

es presento todas estas vitolas que, por su selección de tabaco, añejamiento y reposo, lograron la excelencia en su sabor y calidad. Todas están compuestas por una mezcla de diferentes tabacos de la misma planta −Volado, Seco y Ligero−, que es lo que determina la combustión, el aroma y la fortaleza. Cada uno tiene diferente proporción de dichas hojas, lo que que le aporta su único sabor.

Montecristo N.2 Comenzó bastante suave en el primer tercio, con caracteres picantes y cremosos bastante sorprendentes.

En el segundo tercio, fui bombardeado por ricos y poderosos sabores de madera y cedro. Montecristo No. 2 produjo un delicioso humo y una ligera y agradable quemadura en la parte posterior de mi paladar. En el último tercio, la vitola mantuvo un encantador paladar de sabores de madera y cuero.

Hoyo de Mty Doble Corona Este excelente habano es el más complejo que he fumado. Comienza con una crema dulce, con notas de cedro añejo. Esta vitola irá cambiando las reglas del juego: el primer y el segundo tercio nos recuerdan a un cuero dulce y afrutado con un toque de vainilla y café.

En el último tercio destacan la miel y la vainilla junto con nueces tostadas y un extraño sabor a caramelo. Ésta es, por mucho, la mejor oferta de HDM. Tenemos aquí un tabaco de altísima calidad.

Behike 54 El tiro es deliciosamente suave. El sabor recuerda al aroma de la madera con la cantidad justa de amargura y picor de la nicotina. Produce bastante humo y la quemadura es magnífica, siguiendo un patrón en blanco y negro como de cebra. Nunca llega a ser dulce pero siempre es aromático.

¡Un habano increíble! Genial cuando joven y maravilloso con edad, con un fantástico humo y con los sabores de la crema, la miel, el cuero, el café, los anacardos, las nueces de Macadamia, la madera y el rico tabaco. Excelente maridaje con café, agua mineral y té pero perfecto también en solitario. Ha sido un verdadero placer fumarme una caja fresca de estos habanos.

Habano perfecto para acompañar el café de la mañana. Posee una fortaleza media pero es deliciosamente dulce y las notas de las especias del tabaco maridan muy bien con el café. Produce una quemadura uniforme con gran salida de humo y tiene una agradable duración de 80 minutos. Sin duda, uno de mis cubanos favoritos.

Por su parte, aún sin una causa clara de su encallamiento en el canal de Suez, un buque de 400 metros de eslora mantuvo cerrado el tráfico por espacio de 6 días dejando 422 buques de diferentes tamaños haciendo fila para poder cruzar, afectando seriamente el comercio mundial. Una muestra más de la fragilidad humana, y su dependencia de muchísimos factores.

Una clara muestra del avance casi mila- groso de la biomédica moderna y la secuencia del genoma, fue el desarrollo de las diferentes vacunas contra el SARS-COV-2. A través de la rápida lectura obtenida sobre el RNA del virus, fue posible desarrollar las plantillas para combatirlo, y en su momento, preparar las enormes cantidades de vacunas que se necesitan en todo el mundo. Todo esto en solo poco más de un año. Indudablemente que la humanidad avanzo enormidades en su lucha por mejorar la salud y alargar su vida.

En el medio oriente, en Irak precisamente, fue la aclamada y vitoreada visita de Jorge Bergoglio, su Santidad Francisco I, al reunirse con los lideres religiosos de ese país, en donde solamente quedan 0.5% de cristianos después de las limpias religiosas llevadas a cabo por ISIS en años recientes. Fue un grito de protesta en contra del extremismo religioso, el radicalismo, la intolerancia y la polarización.

Una visita a la ciudad de Ur de donde proviene Abraham, y de quien descienden quienes dieron origen a las 3 religiones monoteístas, sirvió de mensaje de unidad y de que, si no existe respeto a las minorías, no es posible una convivencia civilizada.

Mientras tanto en nuestro país se anuncia el concurso mercantil de Interjet, el cual, aunque esperado, no deja de ser pésima noticia para el clima de negocios, al igual que lo fue la aprobación al vapor por parte del poder legislativo del proyecto de Ley de la Industria Eléctrica promovido por el presidente López. Una Ley que, de entrar en vigor, ocasionará que la energía eléc- trica sea más cara, mas sucia y menos confiable en su suministro, y que ha provocado una reacción internacional de gran tamaño, incluyendo la demanda de apego a los convenios y tratados firmados so pena de acudir a los tribunales. Afortu- nadamente el juez segundo de distrito en materia administrativa, Juan Pablo Gómez Fierro, otorgó el amparo y decretó la suspensión definitiva de su aplicación a varias empresas demandantes, y la SCJN ha declarado inconstitucional en varios aspectos dicha Ley. Por supuesto que el presidente López no esta contento, y llama a traición a la patria; y menos contento aún después de que el INE, tarde, pero con base a dere- cho, determinó las reglas para que en las elecciones de junio no permitan que ningún partido tenga mas del 8% de representación proporcional en el Con- greso. Este es un duro golpe a la mayoría que hoy ostentan Morena y sus aliados. Sin embargo, no deja de llamar la atención el enorme índice de aprobación que mantiene a pesar de la falta de avance económico, la centralización del poder, la inseguridad y el crimen organizado que no dejan de operar, el lentísimo avance en la vacunación, el retroceso energético y ambiental, y en general lo errático de su administración.

LA RIVIERA MAYA

H

ace cientos de miles de años los mayas, civilización mesoamericana, se extendieron por una región cercana a los 400,000 km² desde los estados mexicanos de Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Tabasco y Chiapas, inclusive cubriendo ciertas regiones de Belice, Guatemala y una parte de Honduras y El Salvador. La población maya fue una importante civilización con un reinado de más de 2,000 años y con relevantes aportaciones a las ciencias, así como al arte, arquitectura y astronomía, el último aspecto siendo muy significativa para su cultura ya que parte de sus edificaciones estaban localizadas de acuerdo con los astros.

Los mayas fueron sociedades complejas y establecidas, sus poblaciones estaban agrupadas en ciudades-Estado y cada uno tenía su rey divino, un mediador ante los humanos y lo sobrenatural. Las ciudades se entendían a

través de una compleja red de jerarquías políticas, segmentando a la población en una clase alta compuesta de reyes, su corte, sacerdotes y comerciantes de alto rango. El resto de la población eran comerciantes, artesanos, campesinos y esclavos. También son conocidos por ser hábiles soldados, preparados para la guerra con distintas armas hechas de piedras, rocas y maderas.

En el último siglo se le ha dado la importancia merecida a la preservación adecuada de las ciudades mayas que sobreviven. Cada una de estas zonas arqueológicas listadas son una pequeña mirada de las prosperas ciudades que fueron, así como del gran ingenio arquitectónico que nos heredaron. En tu próxima visita a la Riviera Maya planifica tu viaje con anticipación para conocer parte de este increíble legado que nos dejaron nuestros antepasados a los mexicanos y al mundo.

CHICHÉN-ITZÁ, YUCATÁN

Ubicado en el estado de Yucatán, Chichén Itzá es una de las zonas arqueológicas más reconocidas del país y del mundo, pues también es patrimonio de la humanidad desde 1988. Su edificación mas icónica es la pirámide de Kukulkán, con una altura de 30 metros. Desde hace algunos años que no se permite subir la pirámide, pero en sus cinco kilometros de extensión podrás conocer más de la cultura maya como los distintos templos, estructuras y otros sitios importantes en el día a día de la civilización maya.

UXMAL, YUCATÁN

Uxmal es otra zona arqueológica localizada en el estado de Yucatán y también pertenece al Patrimonio de la Humanidad por parte de la UNESCO. Este espacio es el más representativo de la Región Puuc, fundada alrededor del año 700 d.C., una fecha algo tardía para la cultura maya. La ciudad es única al compararse con otras ciudades, debido a su alejamiento de cenotes y otros accesos a cuerpos de agua. La pirámide del Adivino es la edificación más alta y de una arquitectura singular porque sus capas son ovaladas, resaltando de las otras pirámides con planes rectilíneos. Su altura de 35 metros destaca entre el paisaje del resto de las edificaciones de la zona.

TULUM, QUINTANA ROO

La zona arqueológica de Tulum es sin duda la que ofrece mejores vistas, es un espectáculo que vale la pena visitar más de una vez, pues es la única ciudad maya construida frente al mar. Su ubicación es un entorno paradisíaco en lo alto de un acantilado frente al mar Caribe. Su edificio más emblemático es El Castillo, cuyo principal propósito era servir como faro y como punto de vigilancia para la protección de sus habitantes. Alrededor del Castillo también podrás encontrar más edificios representativos de la cultura maya en la costa, como el Templo del Dios Descendente, el Templo de los Frescos, Casa Cenote y Casa de las Columnas y del Halach Unik, ejemplos de arquitectura residencial maya.

COBA, QUINTANA ROO

A tan solo 45 minutos en automóvil desde el centro de Tulum, Coba es una parada imperdible en tu visita a la zona. Su pirámide principal, Nohoch Mul, tiene una altura de 42 metros y ofrece unas vistas inigualables de la selva. La densidad de la flora es tan abundante que su estudio arqueológico no se logró hasta principios del siglo 20 debido a la dificultad de atravesar la selva. Coba fue una de las más importantes ciudades mayas y suele ser comparada con Chichen Itzá por su alta población y su extensión de 70 km.

En lo personal, esta zona arqueológica es de mis favoritas por la increíble sensación de sentirte en medio de la selva al estar rodeado de tanta vegetación.

MUYIL, QUINTANA ROO Nombrada por unos de los dos grandes ríos cercanos: Muyil y Chunyché, Muyil era una importante ciudad para el comercio local debido a su ubicación pues antiguamente se rodeaba de una serie de canales con acceso al mar Caribe. Así que, a pesar de haber sido una población pequeña, su cercanía con Coba supone una alianza entre ambos pueblos. A través de la exploración se ha descubierto que parte de los bienes que comerciaban era el jade y obsidiana, miel de abeja y chocolate, así como plumas y sal; actualmente, estos productos se reconocen como característicos de la cultura maya.

EK BALAM, YUCATÁN Ek Balam viene del maya yucateco formado por los vocablos ek y balam, que significan lucero o estrella y jaguar, respectivamente, cuyo nombre en español sería La estrella jaguar. Las evidencias apuntan que su construcción data a los años 600 y 450 a.C. La zona arqueológica está dividida en la Plaza Norte y Plaza Sur; en la Norte encontrarás La Acrópolis, un suntuoso palacio con murales bellamente tallados bajo relieve, así como esculturas y estatuas de figuras religiosas. En la Plaza Sur se encuentran más edificaciones tradicionales de los pueblos mayas como el Palacio Oval, un edificio habitacional, la Plataforma de las Estelas y el tradicional Juego de Pelota.

• Controles diarios de temperatura para los empleados antes de ingresar al hotel, al igual que para cualquier proveedor, vendedor o invitado que visite la propiedad.

• Programa de limpieza profunda de alto rendimiento para todas las áreas comunes del complejo, incluyendo por supuesto las habitaciones.

• Se les invita a los huéspedes que practiquen el distanciamiento social de al menos 1.5 metros de distancia con otros huéspedes que no viajen con ellos, así como el uso de cubre bocas en las áreas.

• Los dispensadores de gel desinfectante para manos se colocaron en áreas clave para huéspedes y empleados, además de restaurantes, bares, centros de convenciones, spa, piscina, playas y el Winiks Kids Club.

• Los restaurantes y bares han sido certificados y reconocidos por la Secretaría de Turismo de México por mantener los más altos estándares de higiene en el manejo de alimentos y bebidas, además de cumplir estrictamente con los estándares de CDC. • Para cumplir con los nuevos requerimientos de viaje a ciertos países, las pruebas de antígenos y PCR se toman en nuestras instalaciones por personal calificado.

Qué retos tiene la industria hotelera hoy en día y que pronostico tiene para el 2021/2022?

La industria turística tiene el reto de continuar reinventándose y adaptándose a los cambios. Los destinos turísticos tendrán que trabajar juntos para crear estrategias de promoción que generen interés entre los viajeros, crear nuevos productos y servicios que sean atractivos así como mantener los actuales protocolos de higiene y seguridad.

El Caribe Mexicano se encuentra actualmente en el color amarillo del semáforo epidemiológico y la demanda turística empezará a crecer paulatinamente de la misma forma como avancen en los programas de inmunización a nivel mundial lo que fortalecerá la confianza de las personas para viajar a cada vez lugares más distantes.

Hay optimismo entre el sector turístico al ver un aumento constante en las operaciones aéreas en el Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancún, con más de 300 operaciones diarias. A partir del segundo semestre del presente año, con la mayor apertura de fronteras y la reanudación de vuelos de nuestros principales mercados como Estados Unidos y Canadá, esperamos un crecimiento de los índices de ocupación y la reactivación del segmento de grupos y convenciones, así como el de bodas, lo que redundará en un aumento en los índices de ocupación y derrama económica.

Para el 2022, esperamos que la industria turística mantenga su ritmo de crecimiento por el interés de las personas por viajar y creo firmemente que regresará el segmento de grupos y convenciones así como el de incentivos. ¿Qué le gustaría que nuestros lectores conozcan de su hotel y destino?

Andaz Mayakoba ha actualizado sus protocolos y procedimientos de seguridad e higiene de acuerdo con el “Compromiso Global de Cuidado y Limpieza” de Hyatt International. Como parte de este compromiso, el complejo turístico cuenta con un Líder de Higiene y Bienestar que es el responsable de establecer nuevas directrices y protocolos operativos, incluidas las certificaciones y capacitación del personal en materia de higiene y limpieza. Estrictas medidas como el aumento de la frecuencia de limpieza con desinfectantes, implementación de medidas mejoradas de seguridad alimentaria, colocación de estaciones de desinfección de manos en lugares visibles en todo el complejo, máscaras y equipo de protección para todo el staff, orientación sobre el distanciamiento social en las zonas públicas, entre otras normas.

Andaz Mayakoba también realizó cambios en sus actividiades diaraias, como menús de restaurante digitalizados que funcionan mediante un código QR para que los huéspedes puedan acceder a los menús en sus teléfonos inteligentes, calendarios digitales de actividades, menús del servicio de habitaciones, entre otras iniciativas. ¿Qué retos tiene la industria hotelera hoy en día y que pronostico tiene para el 2021/2022?

Uno de los mayores retos en la industria es seguir en la mente de los consumidores potenciales a nivel global con una imagen constante y positiva. Cautivar a nuevos viajeros nacionales. Y esperamos que para el segundo semestre del año se pueda tener más numero de visitas gracias a la vacuna.

¿Que hace de su hotel, un destino imprescindible a conocer?

La ubicación dentro de uno de los puntos turísticos más importantes en el Caribe y el mundo como es Cancún, el poder admirar de las bellezas naturales que nos rodean, los colores únicos que solo el Mar del Caribe puede ofrecer, en conjunto con todas las experiencias sensoriales que nuestros huéspedes experimentan en cada momento hacen que Live Aqua Beach Resort Cancún, y en general nuestro hermoso destino, sea un lugar que definitivamente tienes que conocer y disfrutarlo.

Muchos especialistas y analistas dan su punto de vista con respecto a todas estas tendencias, desde mi perspectiva y de acuerdo a todos los esfuerzos, campañas y programas que hoy en día se encuentran en marcha, será palpable una recuperación hasta el año 2022, donde es bastante probable que estemos alcanzando e inclusive superando más del 75% los niveles pre-covid, es importante recalcar que tenemos que generar grandes campañas que nos permitan recuperar la confianza en el sector grupal, que es un porcentaje bastante considerable para la recuperación de nuestro destino y del turismo a nivel mundial.

¿Cuáles han sido sus más recientes innovaciones en servicio y limpieza de sus instalaciones para asegurar a los huéspedes un área libre de contagios?

Nuestro programa “Viaja con Confianza” que Grupo Posadas ha implementado en sus más de 180 propiedades, incluyendo Live Aqua Beach Resort, es la garantía en cuanto a los procesos de limpieza y desinfección, ejecutando más de 500 protocolos y procedimientos que se han desarrollado en conjunto y mediante alianzas estratégicas con empresas de gran reconocimiento a nivel mundial como lo es 3M para el uso de productos que garanticen la limpieza y desinfección de todas las áreas, incluyendo los puntos de contacto más frecuentes y el adecuado y correcto uso de equipo de protección personal para todos nuestros colaboradores, de igual forma se cuenta con el respaldo del Centro Médico ABC quien ha asesorado en todo momento el desarrollo y aplicación de nuestros lineamientos que buscan garantizar la seguridad de nuestros huéspedes y también de nuestros colaboradores.

¿Qué le gustaría que nuestros lectores conozcan de su hotel y destino?

¿Qué retos tiene la industria hotelera hoy en día y que pronostico tiene para el 2021/2022?

Definitivamente el reto será la adaptabilidad a los nuevos procesos y lineamientos que “llegaron para quedarse” ante la situación ya conocida por todos como lo es el Covid -19, sin embargo es importante reconocer como el Caribe Mexicano ha enfocado sus esfuerzos en fortalecer la regulación, reglamentación e implementación de protocolos de acuerdo a cada nacionalidad de los turistas que visitan el destino, consiguiendo el sello de seguridad para viajeros “Safe Travels” otorgado por el Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo (WTTC), siendo el primer destino en América en conseguirlo.

La recuperación de nuestro sector será de manera paulatina, definitivamente mejores que el año 2020, sin embargo, aún sin alcanzar las cifras del 2019.

¿Cuál es su mayor satisfacción al encabezar uno de los mejores hoteles de la Riviera Maya?

No existe mayor satisfacción que el ver los rostros de satisfacción de todos nuestros huéspedes, sin embargo, esto se logra únicamente teniendo al mejor talento, quienes son los verdaderos “actores” en generar experiencias memorables.

El saber que uno es parte del desarrollo y crecimiento del talento de nuestros colaboradores, impulsándolos a través de nuestra filosofía, del trabajo en equipo, la comunicación y especialmente el buen humor, poder ser participe de su crecimiento laboral, reconociendo en todo momento sus logros y compartiendo sus alegrías, es sin lugar a dudas la mayor satisfacción que uno puede alcanzar en esta industria, y todos estos factores se reflejan en nuestro servicio y la calidez a nuestros huéspedes, como siempre digo; mi parte es solamente ser el “Coordinador de Talentos” , cuando tienes un equipo con este nivel de compromiso, es cuando se crea la magia.

La temporada primavera-verano viene asociada con los nuevos comienzos, la juventud y la alegría, nuestro estilo comúnmente intenta reflejar los mismo durante esta temporada.

Esta temporada aporta un “street tailoring” mucho mas atrevido que permite mezclar street wear con costura de alta confección.

La combinación de brillos deportivos con escalas de neutros crea looks más divertidos que se enfocan en un mercado más joven. Se utilizan bases simples para crear detalles de diferentes materiales que salten a la vista y se conviertan en el punto focal del atuendo.

Obesidad y su relación con COVID-19: una epidemia que se puede prevenir Silvia Rocha silvia.rocha@alterpraxis.com

E

l mundo padece una epidemia, y no es el COVID-19, se trata de la obesidad. Desde 1975 el sobrepeso y la obesidad casi se han triplicado y, de mantenerse esta tendencia, para 2030 alrededor del 40% de la población del planeta tendrá sobrepeso y más de la quinta parte será obesa.

En México y a raíz de la cuarentena, cada mexicano aumentó 8.5 kilos, cuando el promedio mundial es de 6.1, reveló el estudio Acciones & Intervenciones para la pérdida de peso, publicado por Ipsos. Sin duda, un factor de riesgo para la salud en general. Sin embargo, y en medio de la pandemia por COVID-19 el riesgo aumenta, debido a las complicaciones que puede tener la enfermedad por el hecho de padecer sobrepeso u obesidad.

De acuerdo a una encuesta realizada en el 2020 por Doctoralia, la plataforma que conecta a profesionales de la salud con pacientes, 37.9% de los encuestados indicaron que tiene familiares con hipertensión, 28.5% con diabetes y 17.4% con obesidad. Mientras que, la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición (Ensanut) 2018 reporta que la prevalencia de sobrepeso y obesidad en la población mexicana es de 75.2%, es decir, 3 de 4 adultos la padece, lo que supera al promedio mundial. De ahí la necesidad de entenderla y atenderla.

Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el sobrepeso y la obesidad se definen como “una acumulación anormal o excesiva de grasa que puede ser perjudicial para la salud”. Esto se debe a un desequilibrio energético, ya que se consumen más calorías que las que se gastan.

El aumento de los niveles de obesidad en el mundo se debe a varios factores, entre los que sobresalen un mayor consumo de alimentos ultraprocesados y de alto contenido calórico y el descenso de la actividad física por la naturaleza sedentaria de muchas formas de trabajo y de entretenimiento.

Para saber si se tiene sobrepeso u obesidad hay que calcular el índice de masa corporal (IMC), una medida combinada de la estatura y el peso. Un IMC igual o superior a 25 indica sobrepeso y si es de más de 30 se considera obesidad.

Mientras más elevado sea el IMC, mayor será el riesgo de presentar problemas de salud relacionados con la obesidad, tales como diabetes mellitus, hipertensión, niveles altos de colesterol y triglicéridos en la sangre, enfermedades cardiovasculares, problemas óseos y articulares, apnea del sueño, cálculos biliares, problemas del hígado y algunos tipos de cáncer.

n 1902, Corning Incorporated creó una lente específica para conducción que filtraba selectivamente todos los colores excepto el amarillo, el verde y el rojo, los colores del semáforo. Cómo incrementar ventas con el modelo POEM

oda aquella persona que trabaje en áreas relacionadas con el marketing, las ventas, la comunicación, la publicidad y la estrategia digital, seguramente conozca de sobra y maneje en su día a día el llamado modelo POEM (Paid, Owned and Earned Media), un modelo de incremento de ventas basado principalmente en estos tres ejes y que se encuentra adaptado al consumidor actual.

En primer lugar, nos encontramos con los medios pagados (paid).

Aquí se encuentran canales como Facebook Ads, Linkedin Ads, Twitter Ads, Google Adwords y algunos más. De esta manera, cuando pagamos por un click, compramos un banner o incluso pagamos por mil impresiones en Twitter, se puede decir que lo estamos adquiriendo por medios pagados, afirma Juan Martín, Profesor de Dirección de Empresas y Marketing Digital en Cerem International Business School. Por ultimo, los medios propios (owned), son aquellos que requieren un esfuerzo muy mínimo de nuestra parte, en comparación con los otros dos. Se trata de los canales propios de la marca en cuestión, recursos propios de los que disponemos para difundir todo tipo de contenido. Son muchas veces difíciles de catalogar, pero sobre los cuales tenemos un dominio absoluto. Como ejemplo de este tipo de medios, están las apps propias o las páginas webs, donde tenemos un control total del medio.

La relación de estos tres ejes principales como son el earned, el owned y el paid, tiene un objetivo final, y no es otro que el de dirigir a todos los usuarios por todas y cada una de las diferentes fases del embudo por llamarlo de alguna manera. Así, se generan y se crean interacciones entre cada una de las diferentes clases de fuente.

Como se ha podido comprobar, lo cierto es que los diferentes tipos de contenido acaban relacionándose, además de interactuar y, a la vez, dar lugar a otros nuevos tipos de contenido.

Esto quiere decir que todos y cada uno de los mensajes que enviemos desde nuestra propia marca, así como los compartidos por terceros y también lo que opinan otros usuarios de nuestro contenido,

los patrocinios, las diferentes reseñas de medios y cualquier otra información u acción relacionada con él, confluirán y cambiarán la imagen que se puede proyectar sobre nosotros.

Tanto el paid, como el owned y, el earned son medios procedentes de una fuente relativamente novedosa. Son canales que han dado paso al llamado shared media, conocido en español como contenido compartido. Así, el uso de las redes sociales de nuestra marca, o de otras, hará que el contenido que difundamos de una u otra manera sea susceptible de ser compartido en otras redes diferentes, por lo que hay que tener especial cuidado con aquello que publicamos y subimos a la red. Este denominado shared ha enriquecido enormemente al modelo POEM durante los últimos años, ya que las redes sociales se han convertido en la actualidad en un factor total y completamente decisivo respecto a la opinión pública.

Es sumamente esencial que desde nuestra propia marca tengamos en consideración esta nueva, relativamente, sección del modelo POEM. Así, desde nuestra marca o empresa interactuaremos con todos los usuarios por este canal de manera efectiva y eficaz, consiguiendo los resultados que tanto tiempo llevábamos esperando y deseando.

En nuestro día a día, mucho escuchamos sobre “el aquí y el ahora”, sobre estar presentes, enfocados y la advertencia de que vivir en el pasado o en el futuro produce depresión o ansiedad.

A su vez, la palabra estrés llega a nuestros oídos cada vez más a menudo, y hasta resulta ser la causa de muchos malestares o al menos ese es el diagnóstico que nos dan los médicos: “… es por estrés”.

Y entonces nos preguntamos: ¿cómo se cura eso?, ¿qué tomo para no estar estresado?, ¿unas vacaciones?, ¿algún té relajante?, ¿algún medicamento? ¿qué hago? Estas preguntas me las hice hace algunos años, cuando me encontraba en esta situación y gracias a las diosidencias de la vida empecé a practicar yoga y meditación, lo que cambió mi vida para siempre. ¿Cómo el yoga puede ayudarte?, ¿qué lo hace especial o efectivo?, ¿es real que funciona? Estas son las preguntas que más escucho.

La verdad, existen muchas cosas que puedes hacer para sentirte bien. Sin embargo, voy a hablar de mi experiencia personal, de lo que conozco, en lo que creo y de lo que me ha funcionado.

Yoga es más que posturas. Yoga es filosofía, psicología, ciencia y tradición milenaria. Yo empecé como la mayoría en occidente, practicando asanas (posturas) de yoga, cuando de pronto, algo pasó en mi cuerpo, de pronto se sentía lleno de energía aún después de arduas actividades físicas. Aprendí por medio de la vivencia, lo que la respiración correcta sumaba en mi día a día y empecé a descubrirme en cada movimiento y en cada meditación.

Por primera vez pude observar manera consciente cómo se expresaba mi mente, qué pensamientos venían a mí en el silencio, qué conversaciones aparecían cuando una postura era retadora y cómo se expresaban mis miedos.

No todo fue tan claro, hubo veces que escuché conversaciones en mi cabeza como “esto no es para ti”, “tu cuerpo no está listo”, “deja de intentar” pero sorprendentemente eso fue lo que me enamoró del yoga: escuchar a mi mente y reconocer que estas conversaciones existen y que solo yo soy responsable de darles la vuelta.

Y te preguntarás, bueno y ¿cómo puede ayudarme a mí la práctica de yoga y la meditación? Pues de muchas maneras. Las asanas (posturas) y pranaayamas (respiración) desde el inicio purifican tu cuerpo y el ejercicio te da fuerza y elasticidad mientras respiras de manera consciente y sonora. Esta unidad de movimiento y respiración es conocida como técnica de vinyasa y nos permite purificar el cuerpo físico por medio de la eliminación de toxinas, movemos nuestro cuerpo y es como si exprimiéramos en nuestros órganos algunas posturas.

Por consiguiente, el cuerpo comienza a sentirse ligero, los músculos se tonifican y el estrés acumulado en el cuerpo por la tensión del día a día o por algunas otras disciplinas que trabajan de manera especifica algún musculo o área en particular se elimina.

A nivel mental las posturas presentan retos debido a su complejidad y por el tiempo que permaneces en ellas, pues los pensamientos empiezan a aparecer y a veces tus miedos y preocupaciones asoman la cabeza, sin embargo, el instructor te pide que escuches y que mantengas la respiración, lo que hace que poco a poco te vayas despidiendo de esos pensamientos que abruman tu cabeza.

Aunado a esto, algunas posturas te invitan a que atravieses tus miedos e intentes algunas cosas que, según tus creencias, están fuera de tus capacidades. Entre los miedos está el miedo a caer, a fracasar o a no ser adecuado y es aquí donde llega la posibilidad de atravesarlo, de darte cuenta que se puede caer y levantarse, que hay apoyos para intentar y que la mera disciplina dará sus frutos.

He visto muchísimas personas con miedo a intentar alguna postura y veo como sus cuerpos se protegen y se encorvan. También los he visto darse cuenta de que hay cosas que no sabían que podían lograr; que hay músculos que se pueden desarrollar y posturas que Pág.

se pueden perfeccionar. He visto personas lograr en su primera clase cosas que pensaron les tomarían toda una vida de práctica.

Yoga es más que activar los músculos y crear flexibilidad física, yoga es flexibilidad y fortaleza mental y espiritual. Esta práctica te invita a que observes cómo piensas y cómo actúas sobre un tapete y así lo traslades a tu día a día. A medida que realizas cada postura, tu nivel de conciencia aumenta, y entonces, gracias a estas herramientas, allá afuera serás capaz de observarte y de autorregularte.

“La meditación y el pensamiento positivo son la llave para la paz mental”.

La meditación ayuda a calmar y a concentrar a la mente.

Generalmente tenemos muchísimos pensamientos, ideas y emociones que llegan a nuestra mente a la vez, esto sería funcional si pudiéramos hacer muchas cosas al mismo tiempo. Desafortunadamente, solo vivimos en un cuerpo y todo este sobreesfuerzo genera estrés y ansiedad.

En ocasiones dejamos cosas inconclusas, postergamos o dejamos lo importante para el final y de manera consciente o inconsciente llegamos un estado de estrés. Es aquí donde entra la meditación, un entrenamiento para la mente.

El objetivo no es dejar la mente en blanco, mas bien llevarla a un punto específico. Con la práctica se disminuye el número de pensamientos intrusivos que saturan nuestra mente y logramos liberar esas tensiones que se acumulan durante el día. Así le enseño a mi mente a enfocarse, la hago capaz de priorizar, de actuar y de observarse a sí misma, con esto, mi actuar se hace presente, me ubico en el aquí y en el ahora, donde puedo observar mis patrones mentales y puedo accionar en lugar de reaccionar.

Es desde este lugar donde me vuelvo capaz y responsable de mi existencia, donde no hay frustración ni estrés, solo espacio y responsabilidad, donde las emociones son solamente emociones, y son pasajeras, donde la ecuanimidad empieza a suceder y reconozco mi ser, que se separa del tener.

Sí, todas estas prácticas funcionan, existe mucha información en los medios, escritos antiguos y no tan antiguos, hay muchas opiniones de valor y muchísima gente que lo asegura y lo vive en carne propia, pero mas allá de todo esto, te invito a que lo pruebes y generes tu propia experiencia, solo necesitas comenzar, ser constante y permitirte disfrutar de sus beneficios. La vida es aquí y ahora. Namasté.

Este fue instituido por las Naciones Unidas en 1975 tras un fuerte incidente ocurrido en los Estados Unidos, pero la necesidad de esta propuesta es mucho más antigua, por ejemplo, en el siglo XIX ya las mujeres trabajadoras participaban en protestas populares buscando mejores condiciones de trabajo y horarios más cortos, después, al inicio del siglo XX las defensoras tenían ya propuestas y peticiones relacionadas principalmente con el derecho al voto de las mujeres, a ocupar cargos públicos, a trabajar, a la formación profesional.

Durante y después de la segunda guerra mundial, el papel de las mujeres en el mundo laboral se convierte en algo trascendental, pues son ellas las que ocupan los puestos de trabajo para cubrir a los hombres que van a la guerra. Es así como, madres, esposas, hijas, novias y hermanas adquirieron otra responsabilidad más, pues, además de su papel de amas de casa y de actividades domésticas, ingresaron a trabajos que antes eran ejercidos por hombres en laboratorios, talleres y fábricas, convirtiéndose en parte importante de la mano de obra en la industria durante y después de la guerra.

Actualmente estamos enfrentándonos a una pandemia, una situación de crisis a nivel mundial y las mujeres, como en la guerra, han tenido que salir a buscarse la vida para poder ayudar en casa y sostener a sus familias. Sin duda alguna esto ha traído implicaciones de cambios de roles, en los que muchos hombres son ahora responsables de las actividades del hogar mientras que cientos de mujeres son las proveedoras y fuente de ingresos de la familia, aprovechando por supuesto, la tecnología y las redes sociales. Hoy podemos observar que muchas de ellas realizan por sí solas todas las actividades de la cadena productiva, generan el producto o el servicio, lo promueven, lo venden, lo entregan, esto trabajando desde casa.

Otras alternativas de la incursión de la mujer en el mundo de la pandemia son las ejecutivas de alto rango, que, durante esta época han tenido que modificar sus rutinas para cumplir con

los requisitos del trabajo y de la vida familiar, como es el caso de Sabik Ortega, directora de talento de Talisis y madre de dos hijos quien nos cuenta que, durante la pandemia, ha tenido que ser más flexible, creativa y proactiva para poder ser productiva laboralmente y así, poder balancear la vida personal y laboral que cambiaron de un día para otro. Sabik argumenta que el reto está en ser ejemplo y poder seguir haciendo camino para que otras mujeres puedan eventualmente estar en equidad de género.

También está el caso de Nalexis Arraiz, HRBP de GNC, madre, hija y esposa con sello 100% venezolano, que emigró a este país hace cinco años con dos maletas llenas de expectativas personales y profesionales. Nalexis argumenta que el éxito social de la mujer se media en base a ser madres o amas de casa, pero desde que las mujeres han ganado terreno en lo laboral la entrega ha sido tal que en el camino se ha tenido que sacrificar temas personales solo por demostrar que es bien merecido.

Por otra parte, la pandemia y el trabajo en casa ha abierto muchas puertas a nuevas posibilidades, por ejemplo, el caso de Andrea Vargas, CEO de Potentor, software estratégico de RH quien comenta que, aunque la jornada laboral es más larga, se está migrando a trabajar por productividad y objetivos en lugar de por horas trabajadas, esto también permite de perspectiva y mirar hacia otros horizontes para generar nuevas propuestas disruptivas.

Cada época de la historia, cada nueva circunstancia, trae consigo nuevos retos y nuevas oportunidades para las mujeres, la época actual, con pandemia, ha probado que, en muchos casos, la mujer es capaz de balancear el mundo laboral y personal y, apoyar a la familia con estrategias creativas para salir adelante en épocas de crisis, no es la primera vez que las mujeres avanzan ante los desafíos con la cabeza en alto y la mirada hacia el futuro siempre con él un reto en mente: valorar y hacer valer su feminidad. Está claro que en la medida en que las mujeres se apoyen entre sí se pueden dar pasos más grandes hacia una sociedad más equitativa.

as razones del insomnio casi siempre son las mismas, pero eso no significa que sean fáciles de tratar. Van desde problemas de ansiedad, estrés, un patrón de sueño desordenado, o hay veces que no hay razón y simplemente terminas viendo el techo a las dos de la mañana preguntándote qué hiciste mal. El insomnio es un tema bastante común y aún así la mayoría desconocemos cómo ayudarnos a regresar a tener buenos hábitos a la hora de dormir. Conciliar un buen sueño es un tema importante para muchos, pues al descansar como nuestro cuerpo lo demanda obtendremos la suficiente fortaleza para aguantar las tareas del día siguiente, desde cuidar a tus hijos, ir al trabajo, ir a clases, estar alerta, etc. La próxima vez que sigas despierta más tarde de lo común, prueba uno de los siguientes consejos, intenta no estresarte y mantén una alta disposición para ayudarte: Escucha los relajantes sonidos de la naturaleza Aunque a primera instancia pueda parecer algo trillado, el escuchar sonidos ambientales logran relajarnos debido a que nuestro cerebro los registra como sonidos no amenazantes, ayudando a que nuestro cuerpo deje de luchar sus instintos y llegue a un estado efectivo de relajación. Hoy en día existen apps diseñadas para que tu mismo crees la combinación perfecta de tus sonidos favoritos, también ya existen máquinas portátiles con ruidos precargados diseñados para crear una rápida y efectiva inducción al sueño. Mi consejo es evitar el uso de sonidos que puedan desencadenar ansiedad, por ejemplo, si los relámpagos te dan miedo busca una mezcla de sonidos que no se asemejen al de una tormenta.

Haz ejercicios rápidos y simples Yo sé que cuando alguien tiene insomnio lo último en lo que piensa es en levantarse a hacer ejercicio, pero está comprobado que practicar ejercicio con regularidad trae muchos beneficios para nuestra salud, desde reducir nuestros niveles de estrés y ansiedad, aumentar nuestra energía, y principalmente, mejorar nuestra calidad del sueño. Basta con hacer sesiones cortas de ejercicio aeróbico, cardiovascular, un poco de levantamiento moderado de pesas, o yoga, unas dos horas antes de ir a dormir para que nuestro cuerpo entre en un estado apropiado para tener un buen descanso por la noche.

Toma un baño o una ducha caliente Esta es una de las maneras más conocidas para conciliar el sueño, aunque el truco está en qué momento lo hacemos. La recomendación principal nos invita a tomar un baño en agua tibia para poder relajar los músculos, pero debido a que el uso de tinas para baño no es tan común en nuestro país, lo modificamos a una ducha en agua tibia una hora antes de tu hora para dormir. La única observación es cuidar la temperatura del agua, de estar muy caliente podría tener el efecto contrario y no permitir que nos relajemos.

Vigila tu dieta Otra razón muy común de porqué tardamos en dormir es por lo que consumimos a lo largo del día. En la mayoría de las veces comemos tarde y/o cenamos alimentos que podemos tardar en digerir, alentando nuestro metabolismo y haciendo que nuestro cuerpo tarde en procesar los alimentos, y en ocasiones, también lo que bebemos. La recomendación es evitar los snacks nocturnos, y tratar de no comer alimentos ricos en azucares y cafeína.

No te quedes en la cama Mi último consejo es no quedarnos acostados. El seguir acostados lamentándonos nuestra situación no nos sirve de mucho. En cambio, si nos levantamos de la cama a los 20 minutos de no concebir el sueño y nos ponemos a hacer otra actividad por otros 20 minutos, cuando regresemos a dormir podremos descansar más rápido. Lo principal es evitar encender la televisión o agarrar el celular, unas opciones para gastar nuestra energía es ponernos a leer unos cuantos capítulos de un libro, alistar la ropa para el día siguiente, limpiar la cocina, entre otras cosas.

Estas son unas de las pocas recomendaciones que existen para poder descansar apropiadamente. Entre otros tips conocidos es el evitar el consumo de alcohol, no usar aparatos electrónicos por la noche o usar aplicaciones que bloqueen la luz azul que se transmite en estos, cambiar nuestras almohadas, entre otros. Otra recomendación popular es el consumo de suplementos, como melatonina o raíz de valeriana, sin embargo, yo te recomiendo primero consultarlo con tu médico de confianza, ya que el uso regular de estos puede tener efectos secundarios dependiendo de la tolerancia de nuestro cuerpo.

Protección solar: Una cuestión de todas las temporadas S TA FF BCM

esde hace un par de años que mi piel empezó a desarrollar rosácea, su aparición inició en mi cara como pequeños puntitos rojos arriba de las cejas que hoy en día cubren casi el 60 % de mi cara. No es algo muy notorio, pero sí molesto porque mi tono de piel no es parejo, y en días de mucho calor o mucho frío los puntitos rojos se hacen más visibles. La causa de la aparición de la rosácea no está 100% comprobado, y los tratamientos dermatológicos que me han dado no han mejorado del todo el problema.

Sin embargo, todos los dermatólogos que he visitado coinciden en una misma recomendación: usar protector solar a diario.

Con anterioridad al problema, yo pensaba que el uso del protector solar era necesario solo en verano al ir a la playa o una alberca, pero no. Por mi propia cuenta decidí buscar información del porque de la necesidad de usar protector solar a diario y encontré que es porque hay dos tipos de rayos ultravioleta (UV): Los rayos UVA y UVB. En realidad, existen tres tipos de rayos UV, los UVA, UVB y UVC, estos últimos son detenidos por la capa ozono, pero los otros dos llegan directamente a nuestra piel.

Los rayos UVB son los rayos que nos broncean y que normalmente son más dañinos durante el verano debido a la larga exposición solar que tenemos durante los meses de más calor. Cuando la dosis de UVB es muy fuerte, la piel se vuelve roja e inflama, provocando una quemadura solar, y entre más tiempo se exponga la piel al sol, más la probabilidad de tener una quemadura más grave. La energía de estos rayos es tan fuerte que atraviesan fácilmente ventanas y la ropa, y su potencial dañino aumenta con la nieve y la arena. Y no podemos olvidar que el efecto de estos rayos es el causante de melanomas o cáncer en la piel.

del sol, los rayos UVA constituyen el 95 %. Estos llegan a toda la superficie de la tierra y están presentes aún en días nublados y fríos.

También, a diferencia de los UVB, los rayos UVA no “queman” la piel, pero sí provocan un daño más lento e igual de peligroso. Los UVA llegan hasta las capas más profundas de la piel causando alteraciones celulares que envejecen nuestra piel y crean manchas que se pueden convertir en melanoma.

Busca el protector solar facial y corporal que mejor que adecue a tu tipo de piel, necesidades y actividades y recuerda usarlo a diario. Existen marcas que nos ayudan a las que tenemos problemas dermatológicos, que quizá no solucionaran el problema, pero nos ayudaran a no empeorarlo.

he world is getting smaller, with too much hatred, division and racism. Who would have expected that in the 21st century all of this would happen and get handled so poorly? I have to say this election brought out the worst inner feelings of millions of Americans, including how they really felt about the color of another person’s skin, or the rights of another person to a difference of opinion. It’s just so unbelievable and sad.

To quote the late Nobel laureate Milton Friedman, “It is often taken for granted that the person who discriminates against others because of their race, religion, color, or whatever, incurs no cost in doing so, but simply imposes cost on others.”

We need to come together as one in our world, treating all with respect, empathy, dignity and compassion, no matter the color of their skin. We all bleed the same color, ‘red.’ I don’t understand this beautiful world; sometimes it seems so complicated. Everyone is chasing their purpose, or trying. My thoughts are: don’t stop trying; keep on going. If you feel you’re not worthy because of your race, religion or the color of your skin, push even stronger, and get that thought out of your mind!

Life is so short. God made us all beautiful, as His beloved creation, so how can you question His love? Not me!

N

ot every personal injury trial lawyer serves clients all over a state as large as Texas. With offices in San Antonio, Austin, Brownsville, Laredo, McAllen (and soon Albuquerque, New Mexico), Alex Begum, The Law Giant often needs to get to court quickly. Waiting around in airports just does not work for this high flying, high powered attorney. He takes a jet, his own private jet. Check, check, double check.

Alex Begum is the founding member of the Begum Law group, LLC and the Villarreal & Begum Law Firms. He has achieved a great deal of success as an attorney. The son of a Holocaust survivor who immigrated from war torn Europe, Begum originally found himself as an undergraduate at Trinity University in San Antonio, with a double major in business and marketing. He then moved to Boston, working towards his MBA in finance at Harvard, where he also studied legal writing. He decided to return to Texas and continue law school, graduating with both a Juris Doctorate and a Masters in Finance from Texas Tech University.

Begum could have become a corporate and insurance defense attorney immediately, representing large corporate and insurance interests. During his third year of law school, he was offered a significant 6 figure salary at a corporate defense firm. The corporate world was tempting,, but it did not feel right for him.

Begum opened his own practice and started representing small businesses and individuals. During the early years of starting

his law firm, Alex Begum tried and won many cases in court. As a result of his court performance and reputation, other lawyers started referring their personal injury cases to him. Before this, Begum had not considered specializing in personal injury. Business changed dramatically for Alex Begum and his firm as his office was quickly inundated with cases.

In the end, though, it is important to win the case for his clients, getting them what they need to move forward with their lives. Strategy changes everything in plaintiff personal injury cases, especially when each of the two opposing sides are adamant that the other party was negligent and thereby responsible. Coming out ahead can mean a world of difference to the client, both financially and emotionally.

Begum has gone on to obtain almost half a billion dollars in settlements and verdicts for his clients. When trying cases in court, Begum manages his tactics while focusing on how jurors will react to the real impact an accident has had on his clients and their families. Begum cares about his clients and his community, working long, hard hours to ensure that he makes a difference for each client he represents.

Tommy Eyal Girhish Prestige Skincare, Beverly Hills

T

ommy Eyal Girhish came to Beverly Hills five years ago, believing in himself and his destination, although he didn’t know a soul. His journey to fulfillment began in a small nail shop, just around the corner from where his Prestige Skincare store is in Beverly Hills today.

In his first few days in town, Tommy was already working on many VIP celebrities. Then, about two weeks later, after meeting a charming woman in the salon named Danielle, everything took off. As Tommy describes it, “She said she wanted to try a product, so I recommended one of my favorite products for the eyes. She loved it, and a week later she came back to do her nails, telling me how much she loved the cream that I recommended. It was much better than what she was using before and she wanted me working in her salon too! I said sure, I would love to, and then I asked, which salon? She said Cristophe. Later, I understood what Cristophe salon was, apparently the biggest, most prestigious salon in Beverly Hills.”

A few days went by, Tommy explained. “It was a Sunday. I had nothing to do so since I live a few blocks away from work, so I took a walk on Rodeo Drive, and surprisingly, I saw Danielle and Cristophe. I said hello and she introduced me to Cristophe, telling him how much she loves my creams and that she thought it was a great idea to have me in their salon as well. Cristophe said ok, just like that, and the next thing you know, I started working there the following week. Everybody loved the products and we did very well. I had to leave the small nail shop, since I got very busy at the salon and I wanted to put more energy there. I have clients until today that have followed me from that little nail shop.”

Ghirish wasn’t at all unhappy with working at the salon, but he had an entrepreneurial spirit and continued to find new customers for his creams.

“After about a year, I started to expand to different professional salons in the triangle, like Brighton Salon, Joseph Martin and even for a short time in the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Every day, I would park my car a block away from the salon and pass by this small store, wondering if one day this store could be mine.”

About two and a half years would pass by before Tommy’s prayers were granted. He said he kept passing by the little shop, imagining what it would be like if it were his, until one day he stepped in and asked the gentleman who was working there when his lease ended. He responded that they were actually leaving the following month and had started packing that day. Said Tommy, “ I knew it was a sign for me and the store must be mine, so I went and asked for the owner’s details. Every day I walked by and imagined how I could design the store and make sure that I could get it fast, before anyone else would try to put their hands on it. With the help of my dear friend, Dani Ferrari, I got the store keys a few weeks later and started working on it that same day.”

The store was very dark with black floors and ceilings. Girhish saw that the previous owner had removed everything, even the trac lights, but it only took five days for Tommy to get his store ready. “I worked in the mornings at the salons and left at 4 pm to paint and fix the store, until the latest hours of the night, sometimes even 4 am.

I didn’t want to tell anyone. I just wanted to keep it as a surprise until I opened the store. Then, five days after I got the keys there was still a lot to be done, but I had to start making money and still operate at the salons.

Pretty quickly, I understood that if I wanted to get it done right, I would have to leave the salons. About a month later, I did that and focused on my new store only.”

If this story doesn’t have you believing in the power of positive thinking, what else could? Tommy’s story only gets better. “By now, I have over 2,000 happy clients and most of the other salon clients even followed me to my store, since it was conveniently located just around the corner.

I take pride in my products, since they actually make a big difference for the skin. I have to work seven days a week; it’s not easy, but it’s fun because I love what I do. I don’t look at it as work. For me it’s fun. Beverly Hills is full of surprises and that’s the beauty here. You don’t know who you’re talking to. He can be an ordinary person or the biggest farmer in California, worth billions. Some people are very difficult, but I guess you can find difficult people everywhere.”

That’s true. It’s obviously not about who you know, until you get to know who you really need. A friendly, caring person can make all of the difference for one other life.

“Our dear clients love coming to our store, because I bring them only

the best products with the best formulas. We have skincare products made from Gold, Diamonds and other Gems, Orchids, Black Truffles, White Pearls and The Rose Of Jericho, a longevity flower. even have a skincare line made of The Japanese Yubari King Fruit and the famous Kopi Luwak Coffee Bean skincare line that helps with brightening and lifting the skin.

I take pride in my products, since they actually make a big difference. I believe what sets us apart from others is the personal care we give to each and every client. Brilliant Reflections of Lily Quinn Artist, Jewelry Designer and Business Leader

H

ow does a diamond evolve from elemental carbon to become a flawless and incredibly beautiful jewel? From the depths of a volcano, after an incredible amount of pressure through time, the carbon is transformed, emerging as a rough diamond, so strong that nothing else on earth can cut it, except another diamond. Discovered in its natural uncut state, a journey begins that results in the final, brilliant reflection of all colors within the light spectrum, dazzling to behold. This takes time, patience and ultimately a skilled craftsman’s touch - polishing, cutting and perfecting the many facets of each prismatic gem. These cuts and polished facets work together to eventually make a diamond more perfect, brilliant and flawless. We, too, are destined to be like diamonds, beautifully perfect in God’s eyes as we pass through the many stages of our lives with patience, strength and determination.

We recently sat down with Liliana Quinn at her beautiful home in San Antonio, Texas, where the many facets of Lily sparkled like her surroundings. She was reflected in her modern chandelier with crystal prisms, in the welcoming kitchen with beveled mirrored tiles and in her own original paintings on the walls. She wears custom jewelry from her own designs, enhancing the precious jewel that she has become.

Her inspirational story began in Mexico, near the Texas border. “In the 1970’s my father worked at a customs checkpoint near Reynosa, Mexico, before getting transferred to Merida in the Yucatán, where we eventually joined him,” Lily recalled. “We lived a very nice middle-class life. Things changed and some extremely difficult situations prompted my mother to move back to Reynosa, taking all 5 children with her. I was only 9 years old, but I recall thinking that if I was very, very good in school, my father would be so proud of me that he would come back home one day.”

Studying diligently, little Liliana was determined to achieve excellence in every one of her courses. She was soon at the top of her class, where she remained. “I had a moment of clarity one day and knew that I didn’t belong in a mediocre life. Feeling certain that I was destined for more, I worked hard and continued to improve myself.” With thoughtful insight, Lily continued, “My father may not have been with us, but we still had a wonderful childhood. My mother was all love. She’s the one who gave each of us the foundation we needed to be happy.”

There was a University in Reynosa where Lily enrolled to study Business Administration. She met her husband soon afterwards and they were married a year later. Nine months after that, Lily was a mother (surprise!) and she decided not to continue her education at that time. She laughed, remembering the life changes that all happened so quickly, including the arrival of her precious son.

“We opened a restaurant and things were going well. In another year, we welcomed a new baby girl into our growing family,” Liliana recalled.

Unfortunately, the world was going through drastic economic changes in the eighties and after a while, the writing was on the wall. “Business just wasn’t good for us anymore,“ she said. “The economy was so bad.

Everything was closing, including our restaurant, so we sold our furniture and paid off our debts. We made the difficult decision to leave our close relatives behind and headed to Jacksonville, North Carolina, where my Pág.

brother-in-law was serving in the United States Marine Corps. He knew of a photography studio job there that my husband could get, so we left with high hopes (but not much money) to start all over again in a new country.

After paying for the hotels, food and gas along the way, we arrived with only $7.50 in our pockets! I will always remember counting out the change in my left hand, then recounting it, as I slowly moved each coin across my palm with one finger, knowing that this was all we had to live on.”

Lily Quinn will never forget that life changing moment. Her past would influence her future, as she went on to explain, “When we arrived here with next to nothing, I had to become the careful administrator of our funds. As the lady of the house, I learned to shop carefully and decided how to make the most of every item I purchased, in order to make it stretch for an entire week. Later, in the family company, these habits became so useful to me. It was because I had a dire need that I learned to be so good at the efficient use of finances.” Lily would eventually be able to transfer those skills into creating a budget for each department in their company, she explained. “It was nearly the same as what was happening in my kitchen that first year here in the US, when I came up with an entire week of menus to creatively stretch one head of lettuce and one package of meat into 3 meals a day for our family. I still do it,” Lily insisted. “I’m very good at it, always!”

Thankfully, they were able to stay for the first two days in Jacksonville with her brother-in-law before quickly finding a little rental house that they could afford on her husband’s new salary. “We were so happy, just the two of us, together with our small children. We enjoyed taking walks to the park, which didn’t cost a thing! Our oldest son, Vic, was 3 years old and our beautiful daughter Lily was only 18 months. We truly enjoyed our new life.” Another daughter, little Andrea, would soon bless the Quiñones family.

Lily smiled sweetly as she continued to reminisce, “One evening in early winter, it began to snow, just a few little flurries. I awoke the next morning to see everything transformed and blanketed in white! That was my first time seeing snow; it was so magical and exciting! On a beautiful winter morning, I finally realized that this was the beginning of a new chapter in my life,” she explained. A new sense of calm permeated the room as Quinn paused to let those feelings flow back through her. These were obviously some of the memories that grounded and strengthened her.

“When you get here to the United States from Mexico, it’s another culture and another language. It’s a country with different standards,” Lily elaborated, “but you honestly believe that you have the opportunity to live out the American dream. I never, ever felt discriminated against here, but I always knew that I needed to learn more about the culture.

One of the most beautiful stories in American history that I ever heard came from my children. In school, they learned about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. People from another country came here like us. They endured so many injustices in their original homeland, but risked everything to leave in a quest for religious freedom. To have that freedom and live in a democracy with justice means so much to me and to my family.”

Life was good in North Carolina, but Liliana began to feel homesick.

“We finally moved to San Antonio because we were just too far away from the rest of our family members. We had achieved some financial stability and we were naturalized citizens by that time. On our way south, we drove through San Antonio and we liked it, so we decided to settle down here.”

Soon, a friend who used to work in one of the steel mills in Mexico came to visit them in San Antonio. He mentioned that they had trouble finding good materials at the mill for wrapping the steel coils. This sparked a desire in both Lily and her husband to search for the solution to this problem.

They were able to find a material that was unavailable in Mexico at that time, and the new family business was launched, Concord Supply, Inc. The family-owned company developed and patented new and innovative materials with application methods for anti-corrosive packaging used in the steel and metal markets. This grew from servicing the United States and Mexico in the beginning, to sales within other countries in Central and South America, then to Canada and eventually Saudi Arabia.

President Obama’s Deputy National Security Advisor for Economic Affairs, Ambassador Michael Froman, came to visit the city of San Antonio in 2014. The SBA (Small Business Administration) asked Lily and her husband if the ambassador could take a tour of their company. At that time, the Obama administration was working to take the lead in economic development, focusing heavily on the creation of private sector jobs, domestic manufacturing and US exports. Then US Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker, mentioned Concord Supplies manufacturing in a speech to the media and soon the couple received an invitation to attend an economic conference and dinner at the White House.

Liliana felt that life had come full circle. As a child, she had learned through personal trials that she could succeed by focusing her will and working hard. As a young adult, arriving in Jacksonville during another low point, she managed to keep her family fed, even with very limited resources. The family had even visited Washington, D.C. as tourists, never guessing that one day they would be there as invited guests. Lily’s dreams came true, but she remained humble and true to her values. Lily described the way she felt about the honor, saying, “It’s a privilege to go to the White House, an absolute privilege. You have a seed, a business idea, and

plant it, then you work hard to make it grow and these special opportunities are the fruit.”

About 10 years ago, Lily vacationed in Nuevo Vallarta, where a Mayan woman was making turquoise jewelry at the resort. Quinn found herself going there to talk with the woman every day. “I began to help her, even selling to the tourists, because I am bilingual. She taught me how to create and finish the pieces. I came home and decided that I wanted to do that!”

For the last five years, Liliana has been painting original artwork and designing jewelry. “I have always been very artistic, since I was a little girl, but it was not affordable for my family to get me into art classes. I finally took a short course in Monterrey, where I learned many painting techniques and the basics to help me work faster. The idea is to begin by visualizing your finished piece, but in the beginning, I only know what colors I’m going to use. I have no idea exactly what I’m going to do, but it takes form as I go along and the work tells me where I need to go. A painting I just completed started with abstract black branches. When the verses came to me from Psalm 23

by David, I finished the painting in only two days.

Once I understood what the piece was saying, I knew where I was going with it. The same thing happens when I’m designing jewelry. To paint or to create jewelry, I don’t really know what I’m going to do, but I find my colors, select textures and make decisions about the size or the combination of gems as I go. I never know where it’s heading or what it’s going to become. It has to speak to me. A necklace or a painting can be a way to surround yourself with pretty things in life. I love being part of that, for myself and for others.”

Women are so much stronger than we may know. Like diamonds shining in the light, the multiple facets of our creativity, intelligence and loving spirits will reflect our evolving roles and environments. The pressures we face and decisions we make are continually transforming us, until we realize that we have always had what we needed to thrive and survive. We have our own inner strength and boundless capacity for love that shines on through each generation.

Lily spoke with love for her latest effort, “I painted this as an abstract, working with light and texture, to capture illumination. I thought it was finished two years ago, but it felt too dark and sad, so I didn’t want to hang it. I took it down and started to redo it, continually painting more, but during that time my mom passed away. I stopped and never finished it until some time later. When I hung it up in my new home, I immediately saw an angel in it, and that means so much to me, because my mother Delia is an angel now, and she’s always here with me.”- Lily Quinn

Anthony Rubio New York Fashion Week Recap

F

ashion is forever, but as I have been sharing since the beginning of the pandemic, all industries have been affected worldwide. The vast majority took severe hits, causing many companies, restaurants and business establishments to shutter their doors, while others managed to figure out ways to stay afloat. On the other hand, there are now companies that are flourishing, due to the current needs creating a niche market with needs they are able to fulfill.

One way or another, all have been forced to make decisions that brought their own consequences. Reporting on the fashion industry, I have spoken on new challenges and the changes that had to be addressed because, let's face it, we have been relegated to staying isolated, working from home, teaching or learning remotely and developing a new norm for conferring and socializing with others - be it for business, school, with family or friends.

Gone are the days of personal interactions, sports, dances, gatherings and even well-attended weddings, at least temporarily, until the majority of us are vaccinated. Since we have witnessed the evolution of this virus, we have all had to make sacrifices for the sake of survival which ultimately impacted many industries.

I would also like to remind everyone that in a round of great camaraderie and concern for the masses, the fashion industry rose to the occasion (or should I say challenge) and got very involved in the production of much needed face masks and safety garments, even hand sanitizers. Designers were providing what was needed to the front lines so that we could all have a better chance of surviving this pandemic. Huge monetary donations were made from larger companies and fashion houses to help in the battle for survival. My company, Anthony Rubio Designs, also created and donated masks to our local hospitals.

Yes, times have changed, but we have been resilient in creating what was needed to keep moving forward. It is with great sadness that we have also had to witness within our states the loss of more than half a million people thus far, and there will unfortunately be more casualties, though the rates are slowing down now that we have vaccines.

What Is Happening Now? It has now been just over a year since the beginning of this deadly pandemic and in as much as we have tried to stay strong and figure out ways to thrive, it has indeed been an uphill battle.

Many companies, restaurants and establishments have had no alternative but to shut down due to a struggling economy. The stimulus checks, though appreciated, have not been enough, so spending is at a minimum.

At this point, for me it has been about staying relevant and keeping positive, because there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. In the not too distant future, we will return to that normalcy we have been missing.

I have had to revisit, time and again, what the consumer is requiring and how I could fulfill their needs. Since there were no occasions for dressing up, I had to stop and think about what people were actually doing. I looked at myself and how I had been living, working and socializing during the past year, then drew the conclusion that my new designs had to fit with this new lifestyle.

When New York Fashion Week came around for the Spring/Summer 2020 season in September of 2020, I decided to go virtual. With a keen sense of how this collection would be presented, I created designs for humans and canines that would show well on the screen and would remind the viewer that although we were in uncertain times there were still many ways to dress well and stay positive.

Within these restrictions and stipulations, all in the name of social distancing and safety for everyone involved, we set about putting together a well received, first ever, Anthony Rubio Designs virtual fashion show.

This event featured many models, both human and canine, from far and wide, who with great pride showed off my latest creations.

Since then, with that season behind us, the much anticipated, though fiery, change of presidents and a sprinkling of other unsavory events, our nation progressed! Along with that came glimmers of hope and light in the form of vaccines. Now folks could start thinking of better times to come, and for some people, those times did come. We have been able to relax some restrictions, but not without caution. After all, we are still just coming out of the darkness and it is still too early to let down our guard.

We must continue to have hope as we still put everyone's well being into consideration, not just our own.

Before I knew it the F/W 2021 season and New York Fashion Week somehow crept up on us, but now with the experience of our first virtual event under our belts, we had more confidence and more ideas to execute to bring about the next level in my fashion presentations.

Restrictions loosened and with more people allowed to be present, we got to work on securing a new, larger location. We were fortunate to find and collaborate with the Shop Local Designers organization, which provided a three story location in New York's historic Greenwich Village.

Instead of bringing in a small audience, we vied for inviting press and only a handful of fashion influencers and bloggers. The rest of the invitations went to my photographer friends. I knew they were eagerly anticipating any opportunity to photograph for New York Fashion Week.

We chose to film a few days before the opening day of New York Fashion Week. Putting in place a small staff to welcome and do mandatory safety checks, our guests were escorted to their designated socially distanced locations. Our wonderful team of hair and makeup artists was led by Brianna “Blu”Stevens of Blu Inkk. Her professional team executed the finished looks for the human models, as designed by yours truly.

On the second floor we arranged a photo shoot for the canine models by the incomparable photographer/artist Yoni Levy of TALS Studio, New York. Next door, I was planted along with my styling assistant Jimmy Louie for all final fittings and any necessary alterations of garments.

There, we dressed and styled each model before the runway show. On the lower level, the models were united with their canine counterparts and readied for the show.

While all of this was going on, there was my right hand man, Rob Robb, making all final decisions, directing all of the photographers to capture the event and handling all of the nervous players with the calm and precision of a symphony maestro. Somehow, he always keeps everyone calm, giving precise directions and deliberately clearing himself from the camera's view. He personally feels that his place is only behind the scenes.

We had in attendance a variety of canine models, each with a story and a reputation.

There were rescues and adopted pups. Our youngest canine model, a seven month old red Maltipoo named Pebbles made his debut, as did a fabulous prominent Shi Tzu named Perla. Also in attendance were Milk the Pom along with his brother Bling. We had Reily the Yorkie-Poo and Lala the Pomeranian. Topping off our list of distinguished canine models was a cover model and Sato Project rescue named Charlotte, along with our eldest model, a blind senior Chihuahua named Nina, who flew in from San Antonio, Texas. The show lineup would not be complete without my own jet setting, supermodel Chihuahua boys, Bogie and Kimba.

We had human models from far and wide of different ethnic backgrounds, various sizes and all genders. Many have walked for me before, but we had a few who were experiencing their first Anthony Rubio Designs catwalk. What they all had in common was their love and respect for animals, which qualified them to be part of this special presentation.

It may help for me to enlighten you on the inspiration behind the fashions for both human and canine creations. For the humans, I wanted to present Zoom friendly garments that would translate well to computer, television and cell phone screens. I worked with beaded and plumed textiles in colors of the season - grey, lapiz blue, emerald green, black and a touch of red. If you inquire about the red, there was a particular reasoning.

The red ruffled dress was in commemoration of Valentines Day, which coincided with the opening day of New York Fashion Week. The other red garment, which closed the show, was a red dress matched with the Shi Tzu wearing gold in honor of the Chinese New Year, which was in full swing, and red, the color of good fortune.

Most of my canine fashions were inspired by a very popular online show titled Bridgerton.

These creations reflected the Regency period in England, featuring opulent fabrics in jewel tones worthy of royalty. There were another two designs in the form of Day of the Dead, aptly worn by Chihuahuas, considering their heritage. I even designed two quirky ensembles, poking fun at human Couture, one featuring loads of teddy bears and the other a comforter with matching pillows.

As you will see from the photos, the show was a great success. Not only was my show well received but it was covered and celebrated by press and media worldwide.

I am particularly proud of the hidden message which is always my goal, bringing to attention the plight of pet rescue and adoption through my fashion presentations, which resonates with people all over the world.

I hope that you will enjoy these photos and appreciate my contribution to bringing light and hope during these difficult times.

It is my hope that one day in the not so distant future, all industries will rise once again, and we will appreciate a form of normalcy that we may have once taken for granted. I also pray that more attention and respect is directed to those who bring us unconditional love - the many varieties of man's best friend. They all deserve to live full, happy, well cared for lives, without any fear of being abandoned or treated poorly.

I

wish I could tell you that my experience was amazing in Seattle with the snow. I would be lying, even though the snow is beautiful in the beginning. It can be deadly and make life hell! You see Seattle is a city of hills and I live on one of those hills.

Although we typically get some snow, it wouldn’t stop this time. The flurries started on Friday afternoon, so I rushed home to make it up the hill in order to park my car in the garage. About an hour after I got home, however, the snow was falling so heavily that I couldn’t even see two feet in front of myself. This was crazy! It was going to be a long night.

Around 7am on Saturday, I could see that driving was out the question, but I walked over to a flat street so I could make it down to the bus stop.

Most people probably thought I had a few loose marbles, because I carried four big garbage bags with twenty sleeping bags, emergency blankets and white socks. The bus driver asked if I was moving. Nope, people need to stay warm, so I was going to be passing them out. Talk about an amazing human being, while heading downtown she would point out people to me. I would run out and give them either an SB or EB and everyone got new white socks! Some of the homeless were getting on the bus just to stay warm. Within an hour everything was given out!

I really don’t know how people can continue living on the streets at zero to 13 degree weather. This totally freaks me out! HOW?? How does a city like SEATTLE allow this to happen? It makes me crazy. Texas was another story.

I kept my cell on Texas News and found myself screaming, “WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?” No water or electricity and everyone was running out of food or what they did have was spoiling from constant power outages for several days. It was heartbreaking. I couldn’t do anything. My 86 year old mum was there living alone in her house, having to deal with five minutes on and five hours off. She never lost water, thank goodness!!

I’m glad she had family and friends checking up on her. She layered her clothes and had a pile of blankets to lay under. She was OK, but there were other stories that didn’t go so well.

Bell A winter storm was coming and we were prepared. We had provisions, covered the plants, pipes and drafty windows, hoping to help the heat stay in. At 5 a.m., I woke up freezing, thinking our electricity had gone out. It hadn't, but our electric heaters were no match for 7°F. By morning, snow blanketed every inch outside and that's when I saw water gushing out of a broken pipe. For a week, we had no water and now, even post-repair, it is still undrinkable. The washer and refrigerator didn't make it either and will need to be replaced. What we thought was going to be a fun "snow day" ended up being a costly nightmare. We will be okay, but we’ll never forget Snowpocalypse ‘21! -Bell S., San Antonio, Texas.

Kathleen Sunday, February 14, 2021 at around 11:30 p.m., I heard the wind blowing. When I looked outside, I noticed it was snowing. I couldn’t believe it. I stayed up until 2am with my son, Simon, watching and taking pictures of the snow. We finally went to bed. When I woke up, I looked outside, and snow covered the yard. It was still snowing. When I went to wash up, I turned on the water and nothing came out. I checked the faucets in the kitchen, no water. I realized we didn’t have any water.

I told my husband and he checked, and yes, there was definitely no water. Luckily, we had some bottled water. We both got dressed and went to the store. The water was going fast. I went to the baby area and got 10 of the one gallon water jugs. We thought it would be enough. It wasn’t.

We had no water to flush the toilets, to cook or drink. We had some of my son’s friends come to our house that day. They had lost their electricity.

So now, we had 6 adults and 1 child in our house. The water went fast.

No bathing the first day and no flushing if there was nothing solid in the toilet. The second day, all stores and restaurants were closed. We stayed mostly inside the first two days. Wednesday, I went to work, taking the

10 jugs to fill them up with water. Daniel, my husband went to the ice machine and bought four 20 pound bags of ice. We melted the ice to use for bathing and cooking, but most of all to flush the toilets. They were only being flushed at night.

We were already out of bottled water, eggs, milk and bread. That night, I went out searching for these items. I found water at a market near us, so I bought twenty of the 20 ounce bottles of water. There was still no water on the third day, so we shoveled snow into buckets, to use for flushing the toilets, bathing and cooking. We went to the store to see if we could buy any groceries. It didn’t happen. The line to go into the store was so long, it was really too long. We tried the Dollar Stores and Corner stores; the shelves were empty.

We got what we could and went to find another store. No water anywhere.

We went back to the ice machine to get more ice. There was none, so we headed back home and shoveled more snow. Everyone stayed inside, keeping each other company and feeling thankful because we did have electricity.

The fourth day, and still NO WATER. I got up early, heard some noise outside and it was snowing again. I ran outside and pulled out the small plastic swimming pool, then began shoveling the snow. After that, we got dressed to go look for water. The ice machines were still empty. We drove to a small town near us. Their market was closed, so we kept on driving until we found a Dollar Store that was open. We were able to find a few items, but no water, eggs, break or milk. We drove to La Vernia, hoping their HEB was open. It was closed.

We continued to drive, searching for water. We came to Wilson Market, where we bought ground meat and chicken. It was a good find, but they had no water.

As we headed back home, we came across an ice machine and bought five 20oz bags of ice. At this time, I was very tired and worried about not finding water. I talked to my brother David and his wife Kathy; they offered us a dozen eggs and a gallon of milk. As I was driving to their house, Mr. Henry, my Director from work called me and told me to come by his house.

He knew of our situation. I drove to his house and his wife had a box of food and a gallon of water for me.

I finally broke down, and began to cry. I never thought I would ever be in a situation like this, asking for help to provide for my family.

Now I had water, eggs, milk, meat and some snacks. Feeling grateful, I turned to go when Michelle Henry told me to come back there tomorrow, saying, “I am going to bake some bread tonight. I will have it ready for you.” Now I was really feeling it and began to cry again. She gave me a hug and I left.

There was still no water working in my house, and we continued using snow to flush the toilets. The 5th day, I went outside to check the buckets and shoveled snow again. Simon and one of his friends went to his apartment to fill the empty water jugs with water. We kept it on the stove in a large soup pot boiling with water, ready to be used for cooking or bathing.

The faucets started making noises. It seemed like the water wanted to come through, but it would drip and then stop. We just kept busy and kept each other company. Finally, around 4p.m. on the fourth day, the water came on and continued to flow.

We survived for 4 1⁄2 days with no running water, and it was finally over.

I never want go through this again. I’m so grateful for everyone who called to see that we were okay, and for those who gave us food to eat. I was scared at times, but felt blessed that we had a roof over our heads to keep us warm and that we always had each other. - Kathleen A-R., China Grove, TX

ince I was very young, I have always been interested in health and fitness. I became a Vegetarian in 1992 and a Vegan in 2017. I have practiced many sports: basketball, softball, cheering, running, tennis, biking, swimming, skiing, skating, yoga. I’m a complete “sports billy.”

Then came boxing, and I completely fell in love at “first punch.” I felt so good, in my mind, body and soul, that I felt the need to share it with more people. That’s how Box Beat was born.

Boxing is a one of the hardest, scariest sports out there and mostly a man led sport. However, I wanted to show people that boxing is a great sport for EVERYONE. I wanted women to believe that they can do this while staying feminine and feeling empowered at the same time. We also offer a class for kids where we emphasize anti-bullying.

As part of a Non-Profit Organization called Punch Out Parkinson’s, we have a free weekly class for people with Parkinson’s Disease which helps to improve their motor skills and quality of life.

My family inspired me to follow my dreams; they have always been great supporters of all of my “crazy” ideas. When everyone else said, “Luz, you can’t, you shouldn’t - no way; it’s not going to work…”my family was always there, cheering me on and saying, “YOU CAN DO IT.” I have found my purpose, to inspire and motivate others. When they believe they can accomplish their dreams and goals, they will, whether that’s in business, their personal lives, fitness or whatever it is they’re striving for.

As a hispanic woman, I have had many challenges in life and my career, but have continually picked myself up after every knockout. I always come back stronger, with greater knowledge and more will power.

I often get asked for advice. One common question from women is about the best way to stay in shape after age 40. My answer is always the same - Consistency, Consistency, Consistency. Give yourself at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week. No matter what you do, always keep going. Get consistent with your routine by walking, running, boxing, swimming or doing whatever suits you best. Be passionate about it and never give up on yourself.

Your body is your sanctuary. Eating a healthy diet is key. Eat your fruits and veggies. As we age, our metabolism slows down and our hormones change, so we must be more conscious to what we put in our bodies. We are what we eat!

Making small lifestyle changes and incorporating these 10 tips into your routine can improve your metabolism: Eat Plenty of Protein in every meal and Decrease Carbs Eat Green Veggies ( even if you are not Vegetarian or Vegan) Drink Cold Water instead of Sugary Drinks Do a HIIT Workout every day (increasing your metabolic rate and burning fat) Stand Up More - Take Stairs, not Elevators Drink Green Tea and Coffee Eat Spicy Foods Do a Detox (at least once a month) Get a Good Night’s Sleep Try Tequila (studies show sipping 1 shot of tequila a day boosts metabolism) Do you think any protein powders, vitamins or pills can really help to achieve fitness goals?

I personally don’t take any protein powders, vitamins or pills to help me in achieving my fitness goals, unless I am doing long rides, runs or triathlons.

On a regular basis and with my daily workouts, I found that eating healthy, fresh food and drinking my morning coffee is the best boost I can get.

Drinking a gallon a day is ideal, but not all at once. You should supplement with electrolytes if you will be doing rigorous exercise, working out outdoors in the heat or sweating for a prolonged time.

Why is it often easier for men to lose weight than women? It basically comes down to one simple thing - men and women are built differently.

Physiologically, men are built to burn fat more quickly. They have more lean muscle mass and a naturally higher metabolic rate.

Otero also travels the world (England, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia, India, Dubai) to do missionary work and is planning on expanding her contribution to other countries this year.

Sandra raised her two children, Steffany (25) and Mark Anthony (22), as a single parent and thus has a heart to help other single parents. She is setting up a non-profit foundation to assist single parent households with resources.

Sandra lives by this standard from 2nd Corinthians 9:6-8, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Sandra believes in empowering others with her testimony by mentoring, teaching, speaking and motivating others in her community and internationally. She’s a radio speaker and seminar teacher, involved in many professional and leadership organizations locally and globally.

She is also working on her first book which will be part of a series on motivation.

True Love What is True Love?

“You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens”- Rumi When we think upon the starry eyed, chocolate covered, rose petaled holiday that was Valentine’s Day, we can’t help but think about love.

Love, they say, is what makes the world go around - an emotion that cannot be described with even the most descriptive of words, that intense feeling that makes us do and say things completely out of our character, and out of our comfort zone.

When we think of love, we often reflect upon our partners, our family, and our close friends. What we rarely think about in relation to “love” is one’s self.

What is self-love? Many point out that self-love is a high regard for your own well-being, and your own happiness. In today’s society, it has been regarded as being “selfish” and “vain” to put our own needs ahead of others, including our family members and closest loved ones. However, without self-love we can become completely despondent, rendering ourselves useless to everyone else.

In my private practice, many women come to see me because of the lack of self-love. We are all taught from an early age what it means to love ourselves or not, and our experiences and traumas in life have helped to shape our thoughts and perceptions on it, both in the positive and negative. Tumultuous home lives and our dynamic relational patterns with our own parents as children shape our future partnerships with others, because it is in these relationships that we discover where our boundaries are, and what we deem acceptable or not acceptable in them.

We may find ourselves in similar relationships, perhaps knowing that the person we choose to love is not good for us, and yet (for whatever reason) we still find them so appealing. Therapists speak about the fact that this phenomenon is often due to seeking to correct what was missing from our own childhood, thereby allowing new relationships with the same old abandonment issues, co-dependence, feelings of low self-worth or the need to please, etc.

Loving yourself doesn’t mean that you think you are the smartest person in the room or the most beautiful person in the world. However, what it does mean is that you have gained self-acceptance regarding who you are, what your weaknesses and “shortcomings” are, and loving yourself anyway.

Self-love is about compassion and being kind to yourself, as well as knowing the difference between self-criticism and progression in a way that is gentle. Self-love is all encompassing and acknowledging that sometimes it is going to take some work to love yourself, especially if you come from a background where feelings of love or worth were nonexistent. Just as we learn to watch our diets and exercise, we must learn to understand that self-love is a skill which needs to be worked on.

Self-love is acknowledging what our past was and the difficulties in it, but at the same time understanding the notion that WE are in control of whatever our future will bring. The act of self-love increases our comprehension that in kindness there is strength, and in vulnerability and authenticity there is power.

No matter how many times our hearts have been broken, there is ultimate power in true love: self-love. When we can acknowledge this idea and apply it to ourselves, the shackles of the past can be broken.

This year and every Valentine’s Day, I encourage you to begin the practice of self-love by celebrating YOU..
