Situated in the beautiful wooded valleys of Sheepbridge, Chesterfield, our new 4 acre headquarters acts as a development and logistics centre for the business. Featuring modern state-of-the-art office and warehouse facilities, we also have a large and well equipped showroom to welcome guests.

Santoku is our new Showroom to display our full range of Global kitchen knives and accessories as well as our extensive range of Premium Japanese brands. It also acts as a business centre for you to meet with our E-commerce, Marketing and Sales Team. Furthermore, it is a purpose-built events centre where we hold regular demonstrations around knife skills and food preparation, knife sharpening sessions, product training and celebrity appearances including award-winning chefs and food critics.

INTRODUCTION Welcome to our 2020 product catalogue Welcome to our fully comprehensive 2020 Product Catalogue. It features our leading Japanese Premium knife brands, alongside our design-led ranges across housewares, kitchen essentials, tableware, barware and catering products.

It’s an exciting year for us as we will be celebrating two milestones, Global’s 35th Anniversary and our 75th Anniversary! Hence, as we reflect upon our journey so far I thought I’d share with you our history.

Established in 1945, the business was founded by Otto Grunwerg. He was a refugee from war torn Vienna who developed links with local factories to produce stainless steel products including knives and cutlery.

Five years later, IGL acquired the GE Lawrence building to manufacture blades under license. Unfortunately, due to deteriorating conditions in the UK manufacturing sector, IGL was forced to close the factory in 1970.

Otto’s sons, David and Charles Grunwerg, decided to focus on imports from Japan and the Far East, which helped the business to grow rapidly. Subsequently, IGL moved from its initial home on Nursery Street to Rockingham Street in Sheffield City Centre. IGL had a major breakthrough when it began distribution of the famous Global Knife brand in 1990. IGL experienced unprecedented growth fuelled by the success of Japanese knife imports over the next decade. I, Ben Grunwerg, joined the business in 2010 and we are proud to still be family owned.

In 2019, IGL headquarters moved to the countryside to Silversteel Manor in Sheepbridge, complete with state-of-the-art offices, showroom and recreational facilities. We also opened our brand new London showroom, 'Santoku', on Great Portland Street to provide trade, chefs and consumers the opportunity to experience our products in a luxury setting.

CUTLERY I. Grunwerg Ltd. specialise in both stamped and forged cutlery patterns.

We also offer both 18/0 and 18/10 Stainless Steel varieties.

Read below for details on the differences.

Stamped

A stamped piece of cutlery begins as a ribbon of steel, which is then punched, or cut out, into shape. They are then tempered, sharpened and finished. This process is generally handled by machines. Whilst traditionally stamped cutlery was of a lower quality, and indeed stamped cutlery is often thinner and lighter than forged cutlery, it is not always the case as improvements are always being made in the world of technology.

Forged

Forging is one of the oldest methods of constructing using handcraftsmanship to produce a strong piece of cutlery. Forged cutlery is produced when a steel bar is heated up to a very high temperature, set into a die and hammered to form the blade. It is then tempered, sharpened and finished.

18/10 vs 18/0

18/10 cutlery contains 18% Chromium and 10% Nickel percentages. 18/0 cutlery contains the same level of Chromium, but without the Nickel. Nickel adds rust resistance, a shiny finish and also weight. This is why 18/10 Stainless Steel tends to be weightier and shinier.

TYPES OF WOOD: ACACIA/CARBONISED ACACIA:

ASH WOOD:

HARD MAPLE:

Acacia is a fast-growing evergreen tree that is prized for its durability, lustrous finish and varied shades.

Carbonised Acacia has a darker appearance than normal Acacia.

Ash is a hard and dense wood, tough and very strong but elastic, extensively used for making bows and tool handles, demonstrating high strength and resilience.

Hard Maple is a native hard wood belonging to the forests of Eastern Canada.

RUBBER WOOD: Rubber wood is light coloured medium density tropical hardwood from the ParĂ rubber tree, usually found in southeast Asia. The tree is known as an environmentally friendly wood.

OAK: Oak has great strength and hardness, and is very resistant to insect and fungal attack because of its high tannin content. It also has very appealing grain markings, particularly when quarter sawn.

MAPLE:

SAPELE:

Maple is a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the Sapindaceae family. Maple is a an evergreen tree that is prized for its durability and distinctive finish.

Sapele is a golden, dark reddish brown, medium density tropical hard wood from the Sapele tree.

Found in tropical Africa.
