LETTRE AUX LECTEURS letter to the readers

J

I

believe I was just 14, when I discovered digital publications. Thanks to Andrea Compton who was the editor of a Spanish fashion magazine called Overlay Magazine, I got interested in this emerging industry. I remember very well when I asked her what were the keys to found a magazine, she told me that any hard-working person putting plenty of effort could succeed. Those words have been following me ever since. Here I am five years later, celebrating the first anniversary of a project that became so big in such a short time. Today this adventure is still insane for me. When I launched this publication, I was about to join an unknown world with few means and a very limited network. I started from scratch and I was on my own. Despite all of this, the magazine progressively found its brand image and got accepted in the worlds of entertainment and fashion. In the light of our 2017 issues, I think a part of this goal has been reached. And I keep myself determined to get to the top. Therefore, some new stuff will be introduced in this August-September issue that I ultimately wanted to make special. On one hand, you will notice a new logo and a new design to showcase a bilingual content because you showed us that this publication has no borders. We are also thrilled to present you a double cover for this special birthday issue. On the other hand, whereas I was the main person in charge of running the magazine, I decided it was time to extent the team in order to have a more personal and varied content, which is something I initiated to do in this issue. That’s what leads me to the a pivotal change that will mark a turning point. Until now the free access to our online issues was a major aspect of the publication. However from now on, digital sales will be introduced to support our creative development. In order to be fair with everyone, all issues previously published will remain available for all of you. But you have to know that this change aims at offering you a better content through an authentic and innovative production. I’ll make sure to maintain the quality you expect from GRUMPY while keeping things affordable, whether through our bimonthly issues or our website. Print copies will still be delivered by Peecho. Last but not least, I wanted to thank all people who helped me to get to this point today. Over this year at the head of GRUMPY I got to get closer to industries I’m passionate about, a few dreams came true and I met some of the most inspiring people. So thank you to all our faithful readers and followers, to all professionals who trusted me, to the issuu team that has an amazing community of editors. And thank you to my contributors who have been volunteering so far and highly helping me over time. Your incredible support is priceless.

I hope you will enjoy this issue made with love. Lots of great things are coming!

P

andscape and lifestyle photographer based out of the greater Los Angeles, I first got into photography because it let me see the beauty in something even when a day turned out terrible for me. I could choose to be creative and think out of the box a little, and I enjoyed that. When I take photos, I’m trying to capture moments the way I see them, so when looking back on the image you remember everything you experienced there. That’s the beauty of photography. I would gain inspiration from Instagram photographers including Joel Hyppönen, Jason Hill and Tucker Troupe. But the list could go on forever. I fell in love with the style and the way they captured moments. That has translated into mine a bit.

One of my favorite ways to capture landscapes is to scale it with a human being. It’s a little more personal to the viewers because they can understand the vastness of the land. Coming from California, I love the sunshine. I try to make the most of it while shooting photos, having the sunlight on one side of the subject because it can create shadows. I want to accurately translate the way I see the world to others. There’s nothing in the world like California and I’m thankful to have been brought up here. This place is filled with a huge diversity of people. There are few places where you can have massive mountains juxtaposed with the ocean. We also have the desert just north of us which can make for some crazy adventures. We have such a diverse amount of landscapes so close the city. That’s enough to inspire me to get out and explore it all.

Traveling is getting out of my comfort zone and immersing myself in a culture and way of life that is foreign to me. There’s no better way of learning than to travel. Sure, you could learn about these places and cultures from a textbook but it doesn’t mean a thing to you unless you experience it. When you live it and see it lived out right in front of you, only then do you have the appreciation for it because of how real it is to you. My most recent trip was my first time to Europe. It was essentially a road trip from London to Barcelona. There’s so many things I took away from this trip. My favorite place is a tie between Biarritz in southern France and San Sebastián in the Basque region of Spain. Both places on the Atlantic Ocean are incredibly beautiful. Basking in the sun and feeling the salty sea air while exploring the city was a feeling familiar to me but completely foreign at the same time. My favorite memory was getting to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris just in time for sunset. I’ve never seen a sunset so beautiful and the city was veiled in this soft, pink light. It’s a sight that I will never forget.

Rozes Mots de Jasmine Perrier

E

n 2015 Elizabeth Mencel, that we know today as Rozes, was taking on the world with ‘Roses’ from her collaboration with hit duo The Chainsmokers. ‘‘Get drunk on the good life, I’ll take you to paradise’’ she wrote with DJ and producer Drew Taggart. Thanks to the success of the song, her career was about to be catapulted to a new scale. A year after the release of the hit, she was performing at Coachella on the stage of the Sahara Tent. ‘‘I think I am still trying to ‘handle’ the success. I will always be chasing a moving target.’’ Nevertheless, entering the music industry through EDM (electronic dance music) wasn’t in her plans. ‘‘It has created a new, unforeseen journey for me. The music that I create now is heavily influenced by the EDM world.’’ Coming from a family of musicians, Elizabeth initially started taking piano and violin lessons when she was six. ‘‘It has always been a hobby of mine. I wrote my first song in high school and performed it in the talent show. That was the moment I knew that I wanted to write music and sing in front of crowds’’ she recalls. She made her first steps on stage as an artist in her hometown Philadelphia at Philly’s World Cafe. However her stage name ‘Rozes’ came later, as she wanted to pay tribute to her grandmother who was called Rose. ‘‘She has always taught me to be a strong and confident woman. I wanted to be that for both myself and for my fans.’’ Inspired by the British pop singer Adele, Elizabeth actually spotted her at World Cafe well before she becomes the multi-rewarded Pop Star we all know today. ‘‘Her music is real, honest and she isn’t afraid to be vulnerable. I believe that is the reason she is still popular today, and will always be’’ Rozes agrees. ‘‘Being able to do what I love has created a sense of freedom within me’’ the 24 year-old artist admits. ‘‘For me writing is as important as breathing. I need it to live, relax and survive.’’ Through her music, Rozes is interested in spreading the idea of emotional freedom. ‘‘Human emotions are normal and we should all be able to express ourselves honestly’’ she asserts. Over the last two years, we got the opportunity to enter more into her secret garden. In 2016 she released her first EP entitled Burn Wild introducing deep and meaningful songs such as ‘Under The Grave.’ ‘‘Collectively, Burn Wild was a huge chapter in my life. I was in the process of finding myself, learning to love myself, and learning to demand the love I deserved from others.’’ Last July 14th she was promoting her new

single ‘Canyons’ that came out with a nice flowery artwork. ‘‘This track has both new and familiar sounds to anyone that has listened to my music. It’s a mix between emotional melody and high-energy production’’ she tells.

t has been seven years since Ashley Robert’s journey within the biggest girls band of the 2000s has come to an end. Ashley was in her twenties, when she booked The Pussycat Dolls in 2003. ‘‘We got Don’t Cha and it all changed then’’ she recalls. Until 2010, Ashley was traveling and performing in stadiums all over the world, and The Pussycat Dolls was multi-rewarded. ‘‘I was loving that I could get paid to do what I loved to do in life. Being on stage in front of a live audience is such an amazing feeling! We had the best fans. They had so much energy.’’

The Phoenix-born artist was into creative arts since she can remember, although she was interested in the sea world as well. In the end, the musical influence of the family won her heart. ‘‘Music would come on and I would dance. I would put on shoes for my family and do fun little skits and dance routines. So I feel it was in my blood since the beginning’’ she admits.

As passionate about music as her father, who was a drummer for rock band The Mamas and Papas, Ashley wanted to use her own experiences to inspire people to take risks and do things that make them feel alive. ‘‘Feel the fear and do it anyway. And also have fun’’ she advises. ‘‘Keep going and keep pushing. Remain open, but have a strong sense of self in your heart.’’

‘‘J’étais désormais seule et je voulais me retrouver’’ I was now on my own, wanting to find myself again

Get Me Out of Here qui lui a valu d’être finaliste de la 12ème saison.

28

When she left The Pussycat Dolls after being involved in the band for seven years, Ashley felt it was the right time to stand on her own two feet and reborn throughout a solo career. ‘‘The most challenging was finding my own voice. I was now on my own, wanting to find myself again. I took some time to really find that fire inside to get back out in the world’’ she states. Ever since her breakaway, Ashley has confirmed her position as an entertainer and explored the business beyond music, going from a TV appearance on The CW’s former series 90210 to being a contestant of British reality show I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here where she finished runner-up of series 12.

R

‘‘ oses are red, violets are blue. I know I’m meant to be with you.’’ These words we hear in Alexander Jean’s song Roses and Violets sound like a powerful declaration of love that revealed in 2015 how magical this indie duo is. ‘‘Alexander’’ stands for Mark Alexander Ballas Jr. commonly named Mark Ballas, who is a great figure of the entertainment world in the United States especially known as one of Dancing With The Stars’ veterans. Whereas ‘‘Jean’’ is for BC Jean, the songwriter who wrote Beyoncé’s If I Were A Boy released in 2008. Now, the name ‘‘Alexander Jean’’ has no more secrets for you.

We wrote our first song on a date night

BC and Mark met in 2012 during a singersongwriter night in Los Angeles. ‘‘We both knew that the other one was talented at what he did’’ BC tells. ‘‘Mark wanted to go to dinner. He was trying to pick me on a date, I was trying to write a song with him’’ she pursues. Ever since, they have been together and reunited through music. ‘‘Music has always been something that inspired both of us and motivated us’’ Mark clarifies.

Thus they both have been pulled by the magical side of music from a very young age. Entertainment was meant to be their focus and there was no conceivable plan B for them. ‘‘Music has always been first for me. Mark is an entertainer so he does everything’’ BC starts. ‘‘We’ve always known that this is where we wanted to go.’’ Mark continues. ‘‘BC has been writing poetry and singing since she was a little girl. I started playing classical guitar when I was about nine and I’ve been singing since I was four.’’

They wrote their first song on a date night, carried away by the cosy atmosphere that surrounded them. ‘‘It was honest, we had no stipulations. That was a good song, we were surprised by the outcome and then we recorded it for fun’’ BC shares. ‘‘Once we heard it, we kind of thought that maybe there was a reason why we met and a reason why our solo careers haven’t taken off the way we hoped for.’’ Therefore they joined their forces and Alexander Jean was born.

C

She considered writing as a way to express herself. It was important for her to have that tool to lean on when days got hard. ‘‘I started writing when I was in 2nd grade. The time my writing started to improve was probably around 6th grade because I started to go through so much change. Writing and music have such a impact on people. It can help many people through life in general’’ she insists. Years later, Cailee belongs to a generation of young and talented artists who make the American West Coast shine. ‘‘Being in Los Angeles makes it feel way more real and being surrounded by creative musicians, artists and dancers helps inspire me. It’s also cool to be surrounded by people who understand what you do.’’

Cailee’s sweet voice first enchanted the whole world after she published a video of her in studio on YouTube. Whereas her channel today counts more than 100 000 subscribers, and half a million fans follow her on Instagram, she had no intention of it launching her as an artist. ‘‘I just wanted to go in an record one song I had written and go back home to St. Louis. Then it turned into something that I still can’t believe’’ she reports.

ailee Rae isn’t just a social media star who shines on YouTube and Instagram, followed by thousands of followers. Originally from Missouri, the 17 year-old artist has always been connected to the music world. From an early age, she had a lot of energy to spare and showcased her talents. ‘‘Singing in general felt so right to me. I’d always be dancing and singing around my house. It was when I felt the most comfortable’’ she says.

‘‘Je n’aurais aucune réussite sans mes fans’’ I wouldn’t have any achievements without my fans

It was only a matter of time, before her popularity on social media goes viral. Ever since, Cailee has never failed to surprise us by letting her inspiration works itself out, whether she does it in her covers or original tracks. She affirms to play the songs how she would. ‘‘The ideas come from my own natural ways of playing it’’ she explains. Besides, she demonstrated remarkably her imagination with her version of Wildest Dreams by Taylor Swift, filmed in all simplicity around New York City with her ukulele. ‘‘I had been playing that song for a while and the idea had played out in my head. I was going to NYC for other things and as I was packing the idea hit me. It always happens randomly like that.’’

Ellington Ratliff – a man of many talents

including singing, dancing, acting and music, is the drummer for American pop rock band, R5. The 24-year-old artist met the four Lynch siblings in 2009 that ultimately lead to the band who brought us ‘If.’ ‘‘They had seen me in one of my high school bands, so Riker asked if I wanted to play with them” Ratliff begins. “Then it just kind of happened and we started playing crappy fairs around LA. At first I was embarrassed because they liked music that I thought was cheesy, but years later I left my other bands because I had more fun playing with them.” Ratliff wasn’t always a drummer though and has a plethora of talents when it comes to the entertainment industry. Previously seen onscreen in shows and films such as All You Need, Criminal Minds and Victorious, and son of actress Cheryl Baxter and filmmaker George Ratliff, his career started early on in his life. “I was too young to know if I would’ve wanted to be in the entertainment business without my parents’ influence, but I’m glad they pushed me because I can’t imagine what else I’d be doing.”

44

In 2003, at the age of around 20, Ratliff saw the Golden Globe Nominee film, School Of Rock. “That made me want to play guitar, but I always had a natural gravitation to the drum set. One day I was messing around on a drum set and my grandma made my parents give me drum lessons” he recalls. With his grandmother’s support and his parents’ influence of classic rock, Rn’b and gospel, Ratliff’s musical career was well and truly about to kick off. “It was a very natural progression from acting to music because playing in bands was something I did for fun, not really understanding at the time that it could realistically turn into a career. Now we play shows all over the world and it’s crazy to look back and see that I had no idea what was coming.”

R5 have made their mark in the musical industry and since formation have released three albums and four EPs that have been featured in charts such as Billboard around the world. Their latest addition to the collection is New Addictions. “We grew tired of writing sessions and the product of what other producers thought we should sound like” Ratliff explains. “The biggest difference is that we wrote and produced every song in-house or with friends. I think they all have something special

A

t 20, Dana Gaier has a life that any person of her age would live, except for a few key details. Originally from New Jersey, Dana Gaier studies Sociology, Communications and Film at UCLA in Los Angeles. When she has a ton of time on her hands she enjoys sitting on the sofa and watching a couple of episodes of Friends on Netflix. But this is only a part of her daily life. When she was a kid, she wasn’t sure to be ready to act professionally. ‘‘I was scared. As I got older, I decided that I wasn’t going to let that fear keep me from doing what I love’’ she admits. If we look at her socials today, we spot her photos alongside Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig and Miranda Cosgrove that she calls her second family.

How did this happen? In 2010, the franchise Despicable Me saw the light of the day and appealed to the public all over the world. Gru and his group of Minions didn’t only seduce the children, but also the adults. Dana got luck to experience the success from the inside as Edith’s original voice, the middle child of the three girls adopted by the main character. When Universal Studios and Illumination Entertainment decided to launch this top-secret project, Dana was in Junior High School. ‘‘Originally when my agent sent me the audition I couldn’t make it because of my 6th grade camping trip’’ she says. ‘‘When I got back from my trip, they still hadn’t found the right voice, so I went in for my audition. I read lines from the movie Definitely, Maybe.’’

Seven years later, Dana appeared on the red carpet at Universal Studios Hollywood to celebrate the release of the third movie of the awardwinning saga. She still remembers her very first meeting with Steve Carell, the actor who invented Gru’s original and iconic accent. ‘‘We were on the yellow carpet for the first premiere and he was ahead of me and asked the photographers and paparazzi to stop taking pictures for a moment. He walked over to me and said ‘I finally get to meet you!’ He is the nicest guy and I was so happy to met him’’ she tells. Growing up surrounded by such professional people has contributed to her confidence immensely and encouraged her to move out to California. ‘‘I feel so comfortable doing what I love and I have so much faith in pursuing my passions’’ she confirms.

Outside the United States, Dana’s voice is itself dubbed. The first time she heard a foreign version of her character, it was during her 8th grade Spanish class. ‘‘When my teacher found out that I voice Edith she played it for the class at the end of the year. It made me very interested to hear the dubbing in other languages’’ she states. Based on the valuable advice her mom told her, Dana has always conceived to take every audition as an experience and is aware that nothing can be ever taken for granted. ‘‘I learned to be thankful for every opportunity, whether or not I got the role’’ she acknowledges.

As he got older, Sterling appeared in various notable shows that impacted the American television story, from 7th Heaven to Heroes and Lost. ‘‘This has definitely always been the path that I wanted to follow. It really has been a dream job’’ he confirms. Although he went into acting at a very young age, Sterling has known from the outset how to deal with the business. ‘‘When I was six I was in a stage production of The Grapes of Wrath and the director treated me like an adult. She expected just as much from me as all the adult actors. I will never forget everything I learned on that production and every one I’ve been on since.’’

Continuing on his chosen path, Sterling was in 2014 one of the main characters of Netflix’s crime drama The Killing. In Lincoln Knopf’ shoes, Sterling got to work under the guidance of Oscar Winner to whom we owe The Silence of the Lambs. ‘‘The finale was directed by the amazing Jonathan Demme before his passing. Working with him was a life-changing experience. Every single day I learned so much from him. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

orn and raised in Southern California, 22 year-old actor Sterling Beaumon had all the keys to have a successful career in the film industry. It all started for him when he was a baby model. ‘‘One day I became too rambunctious to stay still for the photos. So they recommended that I start doing commercials, then from commercials it turned to TV shows, and then from TV shows to movies.’’

This Fall, he will be recurring in the first season of NBC’s true crime anthology series Law & Order: True Crime. ‘‘This show is the first of the franchise to not be a procedural. It is a continuous storyline.’’ The 8-episode series will follow the infamous case of Lyle and Erik Menendez, brothers who were convicted in 1996 of murdering their parents. ‘‘In the vein of Ryan Murphy’s OJ series, the show is already getting Emmy buzz for next year’’ Sterling says enthusiastically.

est-known for portraying Piper Hart in Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger, Ella Anderson is a 12 year-old girlboss who took the industry by storm. Her big break into the acting world came when she was spotted at 5 by a casting director in Detroit who booked her in her first movie. ‘‘To tell you the truth, my brothers wanted to act first. My mom was looking into how to get them involved in the business. She found an audition online for a little girl and asked me if I wanted to try it too’’ she tells. ‘‘My brothers actually never really liked acting... I can thank them for having the idea for me!’’

This first job was called Touchback. It was on that movie that Ella realized she loved making films. ‘‘If you watch the last scene of it, you can hear me say ‘this is fun’ and I was actually talking about being in the movie’’ she entrusts us. Obsessed by acting ever since, Ella has never stopped shining in front of the camera through her many roles. ‘‘I love to play different characters. I think that I take away a part of each character with me after each job and I love how different everyone in the world is.’’

‘‘Brie (Larson) m’a appris à préparer un rôle à l’avance’’ I learned from Brie (Larson) how to prepare for a role way ahead of time

Followed by millions of fans across all social platforms, her success with Henry Danger over the four last years turned her into a young role model for the teens of her generation. As she has been in the industry over half her life, she knows today how to properly balance her daily life. ‘‘Luckily, my life isn’t very tough in comparison to other people in the world. I try to remember that. I am still doing everything normal that other kids do. Although I am invested in what I do, I can be at work when I am working and be a kid the rest of the time’’ she admits. ‘‘Whenever things do get difficult, I go back to do things that are calming to me, like art or listening to music. I try to remind myself that things happen the way they are supposed to.’’

N

orn on Valentine’s Day, Madison Iseman is a real ambassador of love. The 20 year-old actress shows kindness in the best way possible. Between two morning hugs with her first love, her cat Owen, she answered our call. And we appreciated her excitement when we told her the name of the second covergirl. ‘‘I love Cailee Rae. She is a super sweet girl and a good friend of mine’’ she said.

Madison appeared such as a sunshine from Los Angeles, sharing with us a good mood and spontaneity making us smile. Her long blond hair and her deep light eyes give us the impression to deal with a Californian born and bred. In fact, Madison comes from Myrtle Beach, a small seaside town located in South Carolina on the east coast. ‘‘It’s a very simple town. It’s amazing, beautiful and I love the people there. I was just really eager to dive into more’’ she mentions. When she was young, she was obsessed with all the Harry Potter movies and the storyline taking place in Hogwarts. Being an actress wasn’t her number one goal at that point, but she knew she wanted to be a part of the film industry somehow. ‘‘I’ve always loved to act but I didn’t know if that was even possible’’ she tells. Her love for the camera became concrete when she was in middle school and got to create her own short films.

‘‘J’ai toujours voulu faire partie de cette industrie’’ I’ve always wanted to be a part of this industry

In her native town, theatrical opportunities were limited. She’s just celebrated her sixteenth birthday when she met a group of people who were all going up to Los Angeles together. Madison saw it as a chance to get out there to embark on the conquest of her artistic dream. ‘‘My mom let me come out here for a week with basically a bunch of strangers that I’ve known for just a past couple months. (she laughs) They took me under their wigs, and I met some awesome people that ended up helping me’’ she recalls. A week after her insightful getaway, she moved out to the City of Angels with her mom and finished high school in a small school in Burbank. ‘‘The hardest was starting over and learning to make new friends. I had the same friends my entire life and I forgot how to meet new people’’ she confesses.
