The Oregon State Fair ROV Angus show is held late August in Salem. This show continues to be one of the largest and most competitive ROV shows in the west. The Oregon Angus Association will again be hosting a wonderful lunch on show day. Exceptional awards are sponsored by the OAA Membership. Exhibitors continually comment that these awards are their very favorites.

The October Cascade Spectacular Sale, Futurity, and Jackpot show in Prineville, is held in conjunction with the general membership meeting and reception. Special recognition is given to the Oregon Breeder of the Year and Foundation Merit Award winner. Not only is this a fun-filled weekend for the membership to gather, there are many opportunities for the youth to learn and educate themselves during the weekend.

Dick Hubman

I encourage all to attend the Oregon Junior Angus shows. As Angus breeders, these shows provide an opportunity to provide advice and instruction to the juniors and congratulate them for their involvement and doing their best. We want the generations of the future to achieve their dreams and be as positive about the Angus breed as we are and continue to represent it to the best of their ability.

Keeping communications open and clear will be especially important to the success of our association. For up to date information visit the American Angus Association or the Oregon Angus Association websites. You can also find the Oregon Angus Association and Oregon Junior Angus Association on Facebook for a calendar of events, sale results, shows, and other happenings within our association. Please contact myself or OAA Board members with any suggestions. Together we can help ensure the success of the industry, Angus breed, and the Oregon Angus Association.

I hope you find the 2022-23 Directory interesting and helpful.

With the values of seed stock cattle at all time record levels it is certainly a great time to be involved with the purebred Angus business. When considering the availability of modern technology and the broad base of predictable Angus genetics, the opportunity for seedstock producers to achieve their goals in a reasonable amount of time is certainly a reality. I look forward to the future and the positive changes that will continue to come to the livestock industry and Angus business as we know it.

YourSincerely,Oregon Angus Association President

Dear Angus friends,

Oregon MessageAssociationAngusfromthePresident10

With this writing I would like to thank all the Angus breeders, individuals, and businesses for the tremendous support and contributions to the 2022-23 Oregon Angus Association Directory. This attractive directory is one all cattle enthusiasts can certainly appreciate. It will be widely distributed at various functions and has been mailed to all Oregon Cattlemen’s Association members. You can contact me or someone on the OAA board for additional directories.

On Saturday, the consignment sale offers some of the finest quality and genetics in the West. There is a special futurity class on Sunday for the Junior members that purchase a heifer from the Saturday consignment sale. This futurity offers the Juniors an opportunity to receive excellent cash premiums.

Oregon Angus sales have been very successful. Breeders from all over the country look to Oregon Angus genetics to move their breeding programs forward.

3. To take whatever is thrown at us and still find ways to do amazing things.

1. To persist forward, never listen to critics, and out work everyone in the room.

2. To block out doubt with bravery and find ways to grow ourselves.

Looking into the future I couldn’t be more excited for the juniors of this breed, this state has such quality of members and cattle. That is what is remarkable. There is so much to look forward to.

I am so proud to be a part of an industry that is so resilient and instills the greatest values into young people.

Hello Oregon Angus Breeders! Wow, it has been an honor to serve the greatest breed and greatest lifestyle these last couple of years Queening. From State Angus Princess, to State Angus Queen, to Western States Angus Queen, to being a finalist for Miss American Angus, it has been quite the run with a crown on my head and Angus cows in my pasture. Meeting industry leaders, knowing what hard work looks like, and finding lifelong Angus friends all happened because this breed and junior program allowed me to chase those opportunities.

This year has taught me so much more than words can express. I have worked to empower youth in agriculture to speak up for themselves and our industry. I was fortunate enough to be the Oregon FFA State Secretary. During my year, there were numerous discussions with members that black cows belong with blue jacket experiences.

50

Western States Angus Queen

3. Keeping track in the program will also make sure each individual that receives a ribbon or award, gets the correct one.

Oregon Junior Angus Association

1. Help the current Western States Angus Queen (WSAQ) and Miss American Angus hand out awards and ribbons. You should be tending the ring at all times. I understand some of you may have cattle in the show, but remember to return and help when you are not in the ring with your cattle. Be present during receptions, junior events and the sale.

2. Each queen will need to keep track of the show in their own program, it is important to be able to know the lineup and division order.

3. IMPORTANT FOR ALL STATE QUEENSState Queens are asked to help with show duties at the Oregon State Fair and Western Regional Show. It is your responsibility as your state queen to attend all OJAA meetings and activities to represent your state. If you cannot you must contact the OJAA Advisors.

2019-2020 Queen

1. Must be between the ages of 15 to 21 years of age. (Following the age guidelines for junior membership of the American Junior Angus Association.)

4. Be polite and courteous, extend yourself, meet new people and make new friends.

51

2. May not have been crowned OJAQ before.

4. Cannot currently be on the NJAA Board of Directors.

DUTIES:

5. Most important - HAVE FUN while doing your best to represent Angus cattle and Angus breeders in a positive light both in person and on your social media.

Jonwyn Ayres – Rogue River, Oregon Oregon Junior Angus Association

This years queen will be crowned at the 2022 OJAA Regionals. This describes the events of the contest and what your duties will be at all Oregon Angus State shows. For more information, please contact: Lindsey Morgan-Ricksger 503.484.5954lindseyricksger@gmail.com

Angus cattleman and their families I understand the hardships that our industry is facing, from unfair commodity pricing to the public believing cattle are bad for the environment I am willing to be an eager advocate to put beef cattle in a better light These are not easy times in agriculture It’s time we all put our best and brightest narratives into the world so our united and important voices are heard and understood I will encourage Angus breeders to always stay determined with our collective and worthwhile goals

The American Angus Association

History of the Breed from the American Angus Association

When George Grant transported four Angus bulls from Scotland to the middle of the Kansas Prairie in 1873, they were part of the Scotsman's dream to found a colony of wealthy, stock-raising Britishers. Grant died five years later, and many of the settlers at his Victoria, Kansas, colony later returned to their homeland. However, these four Angus bulls, made a lasting impression on the U.S. cattle industry.

The first great herds of Angus beef cattle in America were built up by purchasing stock directly from Scotland. Twelve hundred cattle alone were imported, mostly to the Midwest, in a period of explosive growth between 1878 and 1883. Over the next quarter of a century these early owners, in turn, helped start other herds by breeding, showing, and selling their registered stock.

In the Beginning.

When two of the George Grant bulls were exhibited in the fall of 1873 at the Kansas City (Missouri) Livestock Exposition, some considered them "freaks" because of their polled (naturally hornless) heads and solid black color (Shorthorns were then the dominant breed.) Grant, a forward thinker, crossed the bulls with native Texas longhorn cows, producing a large number of hornless black calves that survived well on the winter range. The Angus crosses wintered better and weighed more the next spring, the first demonstration of the breed's value in their new homeland.

The American Aberdeen-Angus Breeders' Association (name shortened in 1950s to American Angus Association) was founded in Chicago, Illinois, on November 21, 1883, with 60 members. The growth of the Association has paralleled the success of the Angus breed in America.

Early Importers and Breeders

In the first century of operation, more than 10 million head were recorded. The Association records more cattle each year then any other beef breed association, making it the largest beef breed registry association in the world.

are a longtime seedstock breeder or a commercial cattleman looking for a quality registered Angus bull, we’re happy to have you as a part of the Angus family. For nearly 140 years, the Angus breed has been about upholding a tradition of innovation. From the early days of performance testing to today’s powerful EPDs built on millions of data records and genomic technology, the Angus breed and the cattlemen that raise them have been industry leaders.

As always, if you ever have questions or need help, feel free to reach out to your Regional Manager, Jared Patterson, at 208-312-2386 or jpatterson@angus.org. To contact the Association directly, call 1 816 383 5100 or visit www.angus.org for more information.

I hope you, like me, see incredible opportunity in our future. The Angus breed, and the cattlemen who are listed in this directory, are dedicated to making the beef industry the best it can be.

As the American Angus Association embarks upon its 136th year of existence, one of the great success stories in modern US agriculture is poised to continue to enjoy our unprecedented success.

Finally, the Angus Foundation awarded $225,000 in undergraduate and graduate scholarships while almost $400,000 was donated by seven states to the National Junior Angus Show endowment fund.

DATE: January 2, 2019

Last year, the influence of the Angus breed and your Association continued to grow. Registrations totaled 327,067 and was the 18th largest annual number recorded in our long history. Genomic profile tests conducted through Angus Genetics, Inc, grew by 28.2% to 162,469 while total genotypes on file now exceed 540,000 records which is 3x larger than the next largest beef database.

At Angus Media the redesigns of both the Angus Journal and the Angus Beef Bulletin drew accolades by readers and advertisers alike. The 40th anniversary of Certified Angus Beef saw continued record growth as 1.212B lbs. of product was sold while 7 of the Top 10 months in sales in the Brand’s history occurred during the year.

As we look ahead to the coming year, the Association will continue to expand its leadership role within the beef industry. One of the ways we’ll do that is by leveraging our Belief Statement whose attributes have long been the foundation of our success. Titled “Raising Standards”, it focuses on proper cattle care; empowering the next generation; supporting our local communities; and, our commitment to stewardship of our natural resources.

History and the future aren’t contradictory to each other. In fact, our heritage is about progress. A look back to any decade in the past each with their own set of challenges and opportunities helps us understand the success we have today, but more importantly it helps us guide our steps for the future.

As always, if you ever have questions or need help, feel free to reach out to your Regional Manager, Jared Patterson, at 208 312 2386 or jpatterson@angus.org. To contact the Association directly, call 1 816 383 5100 or visit www.angus.org for more information.

We’re operating today in a business of constant change. Embracing that and always considering new and better ways to do what we do keeps us successful and sustainable for generations to come.

WhetherGreetings,you

Raising standards is what we’ve done for years and continue to do every single day whether that’s on a ranch in Oregon or through the work of a CAB licensee in Portland.

Thank you for being an important part of the beef industry. We salute you and your dedication.

We’re Angus. America’s Breed. We’re the leading beef breed in the world with the world’s largest and best known premium branded beef program. And as we plan for the future, we’ll continue to raise standards for the beef industry that ensures a prosperous future for the entire Angus family.

I hope you, like me, see incredible opportunity in our future. The Angus breed, and the cattlemen who are listed in this directory, are dedicated to making the beef industry the best it can be.

But our success wouldn’t occur without the support and hard work of the members of our forty two state Angus associations which, of course, includes the Oregon Angus Association.

Know what you’re buying. There are a lot of Angus bulls on the market, but not all are backed by the power of 80 million datapoints and a registration paper.
