National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor those who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. Many donut shops like to celebrate this day by giving away free donuts! Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts and Duck Donuts have all confirmed fun promotions on this day!

Eat Your Vegetables Day
Strategically created in the middle of National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month, this day is the perfect opportunity
to re-introduce a healthy portion of vegetables into your diet. On this day, you are encouraged to eat vegetables for every meal, and for a snack. We encourage parents to let the kids help with dinner, preparing the salad and vegetables. Along the way, you tell your kids a little about the importance of vegetables for a long and healthy life.

Juneteenth / Freedom Day
Juneteenth/ Freedom Day celebrates and symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862. It was not until June 19, 1865 that all slaves were finally freed. That concluding event was when General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas with his troops and issued Order Number 3 which finally freed the last of the slaves. The formal end of slavery was marked by the passing of the 13th amendment of the constitution. We suggest reading Juneteenth for Mazie by Floyd Cooper together as a family today!

SUPPLIES: cardstock fabric scraps scissors buttons glue low heat glue gun plain paper to make tie template
1. Start by folding a piece of card stock in half to form your card.
2. Cut off a 1¼ inch strip from the back of the card
3. On the front of your card, make a long snip in from each side.
4. To get an idea of how your collar will look, bend the snipped pieces downwards at an angle so the points meet. Don’t glue them in place yet though. You’ll need to glue your tie to the card first.
5. To cut out our ties, place a paper template on the fabric, and cut around the template. If your fabric is thick, you may need to use kitchen shears or fabric scissors rather than kids’ scissors.
6. On the front of your card, line the top of your tie up with the snips, and glue it in place.
7. Fold your collar pieces so the two points meet on top of the tie,and glue those in place.
8. Use white glue or your glue gun to glue a couple of buttons to the points of the collar.
9. Have the kids finish by writing a message on or in your Father’s Day card. You can have them use a pun and say something like “Dad, you’re tie-rrific!” or “Have a “tie-riffic Father’s Day!”
