Andi Wilcox Andi is a resident children’s literature expert at Barnes and Noble. “I have always been an avid reader and appreciate all genres but, the children’s dept. is my home. I guess I am just a kid at heart! I think that no matter the age, one can enjoy a well crafted picture book.”

North State Ballet Once again, my favorite season has arrived and it reminds me how much I love living in this area. It has been almost 19 years since I made Chico my home. I came here to attend CSU, Chico, and long story short, I fell in love! I earned my Bachelor of Science, became a homeowner, married and recently celebrated the birthday of my 8 yr. old twins!

Celebrate Agriculture: The 11th Annual Farm City Celebration Harvest Festival

ome celebrate agriculture at the FREE, 11th Annual Farm City Celebration Harvest Festival. The event is Saturday, November 7th, from 10-2pm at the Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park. e are bringing the farm to the city with a 4-H interactive animal display featuring sheep, goats, rabbits and poultry. California Women for Agriculture will have a cow milking interactive demonstration.

Don’t forget to catch the CSUC stock dog demonstrations, apple painting, and modern and vintage farm equipment and tractors.

The Miss Butte County Court will be assisting in some fun arts & crafts and games. Girl Scouts will be assisting with hands-on activities, and will be having fun with washable tattoos. Enjoy cattle roping and saddles, provided by California Cattlewomen.

Have you heard about Butte Humane Society’s Humane Heroes? In recent years, Butte Humane Society (BHS) has been looking into providing kids with volunteer opportunities, but with liability issues and a lack of space, nothing seemed plausible.

Fortunately, a very generous donor recently gifted BHS the use of a store in the North Valley Plaza, and from that was born the Butte Humane

Society’s Education Center.

With the acquisition of the Education Center, BHS has been able to implement a number of educational programs, including adult education seminars and school education workshops.

But what has BHS and parents in the community really excited, is the creation of Humane Heroes.

Humane Heroes is an animal advocacy youth

group that meets once a month to learn about animal related issues and to take action on addressing those issues in fun and educational ways. Topics range from overpopulation, to disaster planning, to animal behaviors and more. You may have seen them around town, proudly displaying their red superhero capes, spreading knowledge about animal welfare… or just jumping around in the bounce houses at Bidwell Bark. Hey, their mission may be serious, but they sure know how to have fun.

“Our Heroes are great,” says Honey Souza, BHS’s Humane Education Coordinator. “I look forward to our monthly meetings because their

passion for helping the animals is so inspiring.

And when they help out at events like Thursday Night Market and mobile adoptions, it makes me proud. Is it okay to be proud of other people’s children? Well I am.”

Humane education is crucial during childhood and the Heroes get a healthy dose of it.

Humane Heroes is designed to foster curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. As a result, children develop desirable characteristics such as empathy, respect, philanthropy, responsibility, good citizenship, and the list goes on. “This is a great time to join, what with schools requiring more and more community service hours,” Souza

continues. “We’ve had several join for the hours and come back because they have a great time and they really feel like they are making a difference.

And the truth is that they really are.”

BHS does not charge membership and is looking to take in new Heroes. ots of little girls dream of becoming a ballerina one day, but few actually make that dream a reality. When Heather Wysong and Laurel Tennant met, over 15 years ago, in a Northern California Ballet class, they had no idea that their quick friendship and mutual passion for dance would lead them down this very road.

that is caring and supportive, allowing them to take the lessons they learn inside the studio and apply them into the rest of their lives.”

Supplementary classes, including lyrical, contemporary ballet, dancer conditioning, and theatrical fencing are also available to students enrolled in their program.

Natural talent and years of training promised bright futures and solidified their dedication to their field. Professional contract offers from major ballet companies, such as Ballet West and the Kirov Academy of Ballet, soon followed. Their dancing contracts gradually transitioned into teaching careers at dance studios across the country, including Boston Ballet, which boasts the largest ballet school in the United States. Both women are recognized for their skill, artistry, and ability to connect with children, and are certified instructors in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT® National Training Curriculum.

Their next venture was launching North State Ballet, Chico’s newest dance facility focusing on classical ballet. The freshly built interior features brand new, state of the art flooring, barres, and mirrors in each of the large studios. The curriculum is intentionally devised from the number of classes required per week, to the uniform each student wears. In the Children’s Program, for example, the attached skirt on the leotard is specifically designed to develop the necessary muscle memory for proper arm and hand positions.

“Ballet is the root of all dance forms. It supplies a foundation of grace, alignment, flexibility, and control that is utilized in all other movement,” explains Heather. “The changes and expectations within the professional ballet world demand versatile dancers who are able to adapt easily into contemporary or classical works as needed. We are so grateful to have Gabrielle Chaplin on staff to provide our ballet students with this enrichment training. Her 23 years of teaching experience in these genres, combined with her developmental child psychology background, is an ideal fit.”

Additionally, NSB is the only studio in Chico to provide a ballet class geared specifically toward boys who have a desire to learn the art form, as well as boys who wish to benefit their athletic endeavors with increased balance, coordination, flexibility, and muscle control.

Small class sizes promise attentive teacher-student interaction and hands-on instruction, based on developmentally appropriate goals. Furthermore, the studio is located in south Chico, making it easily accessible to families from the various surrounding communities.

With classes available for children ages two through adult, NSB offers a program featuring a comprehensive syllabus and graded level system, integrated with performance opportunities. “This will allow us to not only create technically superb dancers, but also to instill a passion for expressing artistry, movement, and an appreciation for the art form,” says Laurel. “Our goal is to nurture and validate each student’s unique potential in an environment

fter her son Alex’s autism diagnosis, Executive Director, Teresa Wolk Hayes, discovered there were not many services for children with autism, and she became passionate about making sure children with autism in our community had the best possible services. Teresa met many families that felt the same way, and they joined together to start a swim program for children with autism. What started as a family support group, grew into a funded program with one-to-one instructors- who not only taught the kids pool safety and how to swim, but taught social and communication skills, as well.

ittle Red Hen is non-profit organization in Chico, that employs 115 adults with developmental disabilities. They provide “Retail with a Purpose.” Little Red Hen wants to show the community that people with autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, and intellectual or neuro-muscular disabilities, are not only capable of working in our quality boutique stores, but are capable of thriving. We take great pride in carrying unique and trendy products. Our 130+ employees pride themselves on

ore children’s programs followed, but Little Red Hen could not keep up with the demand, due to lack of space. Until last year, there were 50 kids with autism on the waiting list for its programs. That is when Little Red Hen opened its LifeSpan Center, a 9,000 square foot facility where they could run programs five days a week. Our N.Y.G.V.T. (Not Your Garden Variety Theater) had its second annual performance of “Wizard of Oz” this summer, starring 22 children with autism!

s the children in these programs grow into adults, so does the question of what opportunities will be available for them. Many of the kids that attend Little Red Hen programs find employment opportunities there. Little Red Hen currently has 30 developmentally disabled adults on the waiting list for employment.

Definitely for 5 and up. Kids love the pirate theme (boys and girls). It is great because the better kids get at the game, there are options in the rules to add variations, and it works on kids’ numbers and memory.

It is only for 2 players.

This game is fun for the younger kids. It was the winner of the Parents Choice Award and Goodhousekeeping.com’s 12 great games for 2012. It is a great game for matching and fine-motor skills. It is fast-paced, and does not last too long, which is great for short attention spans. Easy set up and clean up, and has easy rules to follow. It is great for teaching turn-taking.

This is an award winning game! It is a fast-paced game that our kids love (especially because it’s about sea creatures). Kids learn about the food chain, work on hand-eye coordination/ reflexes, sequencing and quick thinking skills. It is great for the competitive child. The game lasts about 20 minutes and you can play with up to 6 people.

Ask Your Family Therapist

In this issue, we are going to talk about how to make family life less stressful. While this a parenting advice column, it will be informed by not only my experience being a mom, but my work for over 35 years as a therapist for children and families.

I have been asked to write about “anger management” and children many times. I would prefer to label it, “challenge management.”

Often our job as parents is to set up family life in a way that gets things done with patience, humor and in response to the realities of our family’s strengths and challenges. In this column, I will focus on what is called, “start behaviors.” Here are a few examples.

Major Transitions:

Expecting your forgetful son to take out the garbage when it is full is a set up for frustration.

A chore he excels at, or you can do with him, is a much better way of teaching him to have responsibility in the family. My son, at age 10, loved to vacuum and that became his job. Did he do a great job? He probably did not do the best job, but if I was overwhelmed by other tasks, at least it gave me a break and he felt like he was very proud of himself. Children are not our live in maids. They are not going to clean, make beds or cut the lawn like an adult would. So, expect to work with them. Make work tasks brief. For example, have them rake leaves for 15 minutes then they can take a break and come back and fill the bags with leaves with you. Make it fun!

Do a treasure hunt in the leaves, or cover your child up like you would at the beach.

Watch out for nagging and repeating

Pretty much all children have some problems with change, even if it is what you would consider a positive one. Think of these times as “transitions,” which means that there is usually a time of lead up to the change. As a parent, it is your job to deal with your own issues while helping your children with theirs. So first, identify what you are feeling and use your support system (partner, friends, family, etc.) to deal with what is difficult for you. For instance, maybe you are anxious about moving. So, work on the logistics of it so you are less stressed.

Accept that you are not in control of every aspect, but you just need to manage what you can. You can hire a mover, but you are not in control of their timing and how they treat your possessions. Having a contract and insurance is great, but they will not really replace your grandmother’s broken prize vase. Do some ‘reality checks’. Is a broken vase the reason for your angry outburst or is it the stress involved with the move? What you are modeling for your children will come back to haunt you. So, practice the things that help you reduce stress

yourself when your child is not listening.

Sometimes we need to take our own time out so we can come back at the problem in a different way. Some children will need to have a chore chart with stickers for rewards. Older children may need you to set up the chore and start it with them. Money is an incentive for some kids, but it is best to be more creative with others.

Pick something they love to do as a reward, but if you can include another family member’s participation, that is even better. If there is additional resistance, you can ask, “What can I do to help?” or offer that they take a break and

every day. If you need physical energy or the social time with friends day to day, you need it more when you are going through change.

You may have to adjust what you usually do by calling friends instead of meeting, keeping a journal or doing some exercise at home while watching a workout on your computer. It is also okay to admit that you are overwhelmed and be clear about what you need when getting help from others. Remember kids are not mini adults, so do not expect them to do adult things. Children cannot wrap fragile items or make plans with the mover. Hire someone or

try again in 5 minutes. You can also use short directions like “outside, rake and bag” for your kids that get overwhelmed or manipulative about directions.

reach out to other adults for help.

Your children will get through major transitions with fewer problems if you do your work first. Then, help them express what they feel about a big change with you, a relative or family friend. Identify and address what fears they have. Create ways for them to express and manage feelings throughout the change. If they are old enough, they can make lists of what they want to bring in the car while moving and have a yard sale of old items and use the money for setting up something special in their new room. If your children are used to lots of activity to work off energy, do not expect that staying home packing boxes is not going to cause a crisis. Ask friends to take them out while you pack. Do not forget to reward them when they are helpful with a smile, a hug and a ‘thank you.’

Daily Transitions:

These are often the most difficult. For instance, day after day, parents worldwide struggle with getting their children to school, practice or any event on time. With multiple children, this is often compounded by multiple issues.

Someone is usually very proud to be ready first and tease the child who is lagging. And how about all the attention and control that late child is getting from you. If this is happening in your house, you need a better ‘exit strategy’. Use some of the positive strategies I spoke about like rewards, reframing and taking your own ‘time out’. Sit down with your support system and talk about a new strategy. Maybe someone can take the children to school for a short time and break the cycle of morning chaos. Resist shaming or judging statements. If the struggle continues, there may be a deeper issue that you may want to check with your child’s teacher or reach out for some professional help.

For small transitions during the day, such as homework, meals and bedtime, add prompts to your strategy. Young children have no sense of time and teenagers have their own priorities, which do not include you. Setting a timer (phones are great for this) near them with a reminder that they have so many minutes until the activity can help. You can help them finish what they are doing to make a positive transition to the next activity. Sounds like a lot of work? Consider all the time you waste, cleaning up after an emotional incident for you and your child. Parenting is often about making the decision to invest time on the front end to make for smooth transitions and a more positive family life. Start with just one behavior you would like to change and give yourself a sticker for trying.

Requirements for Baby Friendly and Mother Friendly Hospitals

Have you heard the term ‘baby-friendly’ hospital?

Maybe you have seen the billboards around town which advertise that Enloe Hospital is baby friendly.

Feather River, more recently, acquired the same status. But what does this term mean? Aren’t all hospitals baby friendly?

Although many hospitals are friendly to babies, in order for a hospital to declare itself a “baby friendly hospital,” specific criteria must be met, including not accepting samples of formula, and making sure all nursing staff are trained in how to help a mother succeed at breastfeeding. Most of the requirements that come with the baby friendly label have to do with breastfeeding. There are only a few hundred hospitals and birth centers in the country which have earned this title. We are extremely fortunate to have two of them surrounding us in our community!

Specific hospitals can be deemed baby friendly, but did you know that they can also be designated “mother friendly?” Two separate organizations give these designations. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative was started, in part, by the World Health Organization (WHO), while the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative is backed by the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, a group of many individuals and organizations.

1. Offer all birthing mothers: • Unrestricted access to birth companions including fathers, partners, children, family members, and friends • Unrestricted access to continuous emotional and physical support from a skilled woman—for example, a doula • Access to professional midwifery care 2. Provide accurate descriptive and statistical information to the public about its practices and procedures for birth care, including measures of interventions and outcomes.

3. Provide culturally competent care— that is, care that is sensitive and responsive to the specific beliefs, values, and customs of the mother’s ethnicity and religion.

4. Provide the birthing woman with the freedom to walk, move about, and assume the positions of her choice during labor and birth (unless restriction is specifically required to correct a

complication), and discourages the use of the lithotomy (flat on back) position.

5. Have clearly defined policies and procedures for: • Collaborating and consulting throughout the perinatal period with other maternity services, including communicating with the original caregiver when transfer from one birth site to another is necessary • Linking the mother and baby to appropriate community resources, including prenatal and breastfeeding support 6. Not routinely employ practices and procedures that are unsupported by scientific evidence, including, but not limited to the following: shaving, enemas, IVs, withholding nourishment or water, early rupture of membranes, electronic fetal monitoring. Other interventions are limited as follows: • Has an induction rate of 10% or less • Has an episiotomy rate of 20% or less with a goal of 5% or less • Has a total cesarean rate of 10% or less in community hospitals, and 15% or less in tertiary care (high-risk) hospitals • Has a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) rate of 60% or more with a goal of 75% or more.

7. Educates staff in non-drug methods of pain relief, and does not promote the use of analgesic or anesthetic drugs not specifically required to correct a complication.

8. Encourages all mothers and families, including those with sick or premature newborns or infants with congenital problems, to touch, hold, breastfeed, and care for their babies to the extent compatible with their conditions.

9. Discourages non religious circumcision of the newborn.

10. Strives to achieve the WHO-UNICEF “Ten Steps of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative” to promote successful breastfeeding.

There are very few US hospitals that have obtained this status. They are more common in the UK and Australia. If you look carefully at what it would take, I am not sure it is even a possibility in our area; it may not even be considered desirable to many or most; but information is the first step and it is worth a second thought.

Who knows? Maybe in the future, “Mother Friendly” hospital advertisements will be on the billboards, too.

2. Place fruit on a small tray covered with a piece of waxed paper. Use a spoon to drizzle the melted chocolate on top of the fruit.

3. Sprinkle the fruit with chopped nuts.

4. Cover the fruit and place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes or until the chocolate hardens. Serve chilled.

Give Yourself a Quick Stretch

All you need is a doorway and a rug.

Stick out your arm and bend it straight up at the elbow. Lay your forearm on the doorjamb and twist your body gently away from your arm until you feel the stretch across your right shoulder and down the right side of your back. Ah, that feels good. Next, lie on your stomach, on a rug, and prop your upper body up slowly by straightening your arms.

Push your hips down into the carpet as you arch your back as much as you can, stretching your upper body up and back.
