Carl is a retired non-profit administrator who served as Director of Work Training Center from 2000 to 2012. He now consults with similar agencies throughout California, focusing on policy updates, accreditation preparation, and management organization. Tips for Creating a Winning Science Fair Project

Connor Schademan, senior at Inspire School of the Arts and Sciences, has been doing science fair projects since fourth grade. He has won three best of grades in the Chico Science Fair, and in the seventh grade, he won the junior division of the California State Science fair in the category of plant biology. He was just accepted to Cal Poly, Pomona in chemical engineering, so all his hard work has really paid off! Here are some tips from Connor for completing a winning science fair project.

1. Make a list of things that interest you and ask a question about one of those things.

Record your ideas and actions in a science notebook. For example, Connor was really interested in amphibians that live in wetlands. He read an article about frog mutations and this got him thinking about what kinds of chemicals are harmful to wetland organisms. As a result, he wanted to explore how household chemicals affect wetland organisms.

He could not experiment with frogs, so he used elodea, a wetland plant, as his test species.

2. Figure out the best way to answer your question.

For Connor’s elodea project, he collected a number of common household cleaners from the cleaning cabinet, made solutions of each, and exposed the elodea to each one. It is really important to focus on one variable to study. So, in this study, he focused on whether or not the chemicals caused cell damage in elodea.

3. Use your resources.

The project is yours, but everyone needs help. Even top-notch scientists get feedback and ideas from peers and their mentors. Teachers, parents, university professors, or local experts can help provide access to valuable equipment and information. These can be a huge help; however, you have to reach out. For example, Connor borrowed a microscope from a University lab to observe the elodea plant leaves after soaking them in each solution. Without the microscope, this project would not have been possible.

4. Do your study over a period of time and be prepared for hard work Good science takes time, so plan ahead and get an early start. When Connor won the State Science Fair with his study on coyote bush, the study took place over a period of four months! That’s a long time.

Connor’s elodea project took about one month to complete. He needed to get the microscope, learn how to use it, collect elodea, mix different concentrations of his test solutions, soak the elodea in each solution, view each specimen under the microscope, record observations, analyze data, draw conclusions, and create his poster board. That’s a lot of work!

5. Conduct multiple trials.

Science relies on reliable evidence, and you can only get that by conducting multiple trials to produce lots of data using the same procedure. This allows you to make much stronger claims. For Connor’s elodea study, he tested five different substances and each one of these at three different concentrations, plus a control of just water. That resulted in 16 different data points which allowed him to draw accurate conclusions about which products had harmful effects on the elodea. For the coyote bush study, he collected insects over a period two months. He identified 72 individual specimens which allowed him to create a good model of a food web and draw multiple conclusions.

6. Make a quality display board.

Start by making a Powerpoint early in the process. Your first slide is your title, your second slide could be your research question, and continue on by simply following the logic of your

project. If you created any drawings or handwritten charts, include them as well. When you have all your slides, lay them out on your board first and in columns so that it reads from left to right. You can trim the margins of each piece of paper so that they all fit. Once it looks perfect, attach each piece using double stick tape, which works much better than glue sticks.

Now you are ready to enter your winning project!

R.I.S.E. Strong (Respect,

Image, Self-Love, Education and Empowerment) is a program designed for adolescent girls at the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade school levels.

Through positive school presentations and community workshops, R.I.S.E. attendees leave equipped with tools necessary to value and care for their whole selves. R.I.S.E. girls are empowered to love and respect themselves, and each other, as they begin their journey on a happy, healthy, lifelong relationship with food, body, and self.

Why R.I.S.E.?

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA, 2016),

40-60% of elementary school girls (ages 6-12) are concerned about becoming too fat and engaging in unhealthy weight control behaviors.

With the best-known contributor to eating disorder behavior being body dissatisfaction, recent studies are showing the median onset of eating disorder behaviors as 12-13 years of age (NEDA, 2016). These statistics are very real and alarming. It is our responsibility to bring awareness and education to our young ladies growing up in such a culture.

I have worked as a Registered Dietitian for 20 years with a specialization in eating disorders for the past 10 years. Like most adolescent girls, and women alike,

I have experienced my own struggles with body image and peer pressure to “be” a certain way. Confusing messages about exercise, dieting and acceptance plagued my own youth. It was through my own personal struggle and journey through recovery that my passion to work with adolescent girls was realized.

Self-talk is the most powerful form of communication because it either empowers or it defeats us. One of the questions I ask the girls is, “Do you always speak to yourself like you would speak to a good friend or sibling, or someone you love?” We explore positive, compassionate self-talk, and self-love tools like music lyrics, quotes and journaling. The energy

and camaraderie that emerges from a room full of R.I.S.E. participants is priceless. The girls amaze me with their vulnerability and courage to show up, share and be seen.

It is said that a culture is formed by the stories our children are told. It is time for us to form a new story of self-love, acceptance, compassion, respect and value. We have the opportunity to empower this generation with a new message. What an honor it is for R.I.S.E to be a part of this new story.

Helping Young Children Cross the Bridge to Reading Fluency CUSD, Sunrise Rotary, and the Reading Pals Program Collaborate to Meet the Challenge

ixty-five years ago, when the first postwar baby boomers reached kindergarten, motivating young children to learn to read was easier than it is today. Most American homes had newspapers and magazines, while few had any consumer electronics other than, perhaps, a radio to attract children’s attention. Reading was an important pathway to entertainment, and most kids could not wait to join in the fun by learning to read like their friends and older siblings.

Starting in the mid-1950’s, however, a whole host of devices began to compete with literature for the time and attention of children and teenagers. And with the new century, the availability of personal electronics to school-aged children has become nearly universal. As a result, the oldfashioned comic book, storybook, and children’s adventure series (remember the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew?) have a much harder time competing in the new flash-bang world we have created. So we find it more difficult to motivate some kids to embark on the arduous, but ultimately rewarding path to reading fluency.

As of 2013, according to statistics

Reading Pals team leader, Michelle Curran, and Site Coordinator/Title I Teacher, Sherri Lowe, offer the following tips to all parents who want to assist their early elementary school children to “cross the bridge” to reading success: 1. Set the stage for literacy by making children’s bedrooms off-limits to television, electronic media and communications devices, but rich with books, paper, crayons and pencils.

2. Build vocabulary and skill by reading to and with your children. Choose stories that are just a bit beyond your child’s current level and explain new words as they pop up. Include poems, riddles, and funny limericks.

3. Expand vocabulary by visiting many low cost, no cost points of interest right here in Butte County. Places like Patrick Ranch, Chico Museum, Bidwell Park, Oroville Dam, and our beautiful orchards can provide rich opportunities to discuss new words and concepts. And don’t forget to visit the library!

4. Although comic books might not have been blessed by your father’s elementary school teacher, they could be one way to develop interest in reluctant early readers. Choose ageappropriate materials and then take it one step further by encouraging your youngster to write and illustrate his/ her own stories.

from the U.S. Department of Education, only 34% of public school fourth graders (and just 40% in Chico schools) were proficient readers; meaning they could read well enough to consider it a joy to tackle a new book rather than a chore to be avoided. Children who cannot read proficiently by fourth grade are much less likely to graduate from high school and more likely to suffer many other predictable negative outcomes as they find themselves increasingly alienated by a deficient level of literacy. They have not crossed the crucial bridge from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn; a transition that is essential to their future success in mastering math, science, history, and many other subjects that are important to career, citizenship, and life success.

To address the challenge of making sure all young readers in Chico are proficient by the fourth grade, several organizations joined forces in 2013 to form a collaborative effort, focused intently, but not exclusively on the students at John H. McManus Elementary School. The Sunrise Rotary Club of Chico had already been promoting literacy throughout Chico by distributing free dictionaries to all third graders. Founded in 2002, this service club has also provided refurbished laptop computers to English-learning students at a convent school in Viet Nam. To support these efforts, Sunrise Rotary is hosting its Spring Fling Celebration fundraiser at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds on April 22 (find full details at www. rotarychicosunrise.org).

Meanwhile, the North Valley Community Foundation formed a partnership with the Chico Unified School District to create Reading Pals, a program that places trained adult volunteers one-on-one with second, third, and fourth graders who need extra assistance and coaching to assure their best chance for reading success. Almost immediately, Sunrise Rotary stepped forward to supply volunteers, support the library, provide incentive awards, and create an outdoor classroom space where supervised and

unsupervised reading and related activities can take place. Other local organizations, including North Star Engineering, Culp and Tanner, Costco, Brad Jacobsen/Farmers Insurance, Enloe Hospital, Vespers Chico, Chico Noon Rotary, and Bidwell Presbyterian Church came in to play as well, adding their support both financially and via volunteers.

The Reading Pals program is surprisingly effective, with many participants making leaps of a grade level or more in just a few months. According to Principal Kristine Keene, the average McManus participant achieves 2.8 months of reading improvement for every month spent in the program. This success is the result of the strong positive relationships formed between the adult volunteers and student participants, as well as a tested and proven set of graduated books, both fiction and non-fiction, covering a variety of topics of interest to young readers. In addition, volunteers and students may introduce reading materials and word games they find appealing and useful, while the community and the schools have come forth with an ever-changing assortment of books that the kids can take home to keep.

Reading Pals Volunteer Scott Chalmers points out: “Only an hour of our time can touch the spirit of these students in two ways.

First, someone cares about them personally, and second, reading is building a foundation for the rest of their life. There is no greater investment than that”. Adds Dr. Mimi Miller of the CSU Chico Department of Education “Reading Pals has a positive powerful impact on students and is helping to build a new generation of readers in Chico.”

Gold Nugget Days commemorates the discovery of the famous 54-pound Dogtown nugget, way back in April, 1859.

This year’s theme is “Golden Heroes.”

The celebration gets under way with the Gold Nugget Queen Contest. Each of the contestants must design a dress representing the period from 1850-1899, secure a sponsor, adhere to a strict budget, and put together an elaborate portfolio.

The winner is crowned during Thursday night’s Opening Ceremonies.

The Saturday morning Donkey Derby recreates the original trek that delivered the Dogtown nugget to what is now Old Magalia. The race runs from the bridge over the Feather River, uphill to the parking lot of the Old Magalia Community Church, with each donkey carrying a sack weighing 54 pounds.

Drovers then try to persuade their animals to negotiate an obstacle course, including the dreaded water hole. The drovers’ determination to get their donkeys across the finish line is matched by the donkeys’ determination to stop in their tracks.

The awe-inspiring Gold Nugget Days Parade begins at noon on Saturday in

“...a painless history lesson and a lot of fun...” downtown Paradise. Entrants vie for trophies and ribbons in many categories, including: floats, marching units, motor vehicles, equestrian, and commercial. The parade ends at the Paradise Community Park, where the floats will be on display There will be food, music, and fun for the whole family.

The Gold Nugget Museum will be open

throughout the four-day celebration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be food, a sweet shop, and music. The Paradise Depot Museum, with its Butte County Railroad model, will be open Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Depot’s tenth anniversary will be celebrated with special events.

The Children’s Costume Contest takes place at the Paradise Community Park, Saturday after the parade. Children ranging from pre-school through fifth grades dress up as pioneers, miners, cowboys, or cowgirls.

Be sure to pick up a copy of the Dogtown Nugget, available at the Gold Nugget Museum, as well as at local businesses and restaurants. This souvenir program covers all the Gold Nugget Days activities, including a detailed schedule of events.

A word of warning: Anyone not wearing a 2017 Gold Nugget Days badge will be considered “outside the law” and as such will be confined to the Calaboose by the High Sheriff and his able deputies.

Badges are available for $2 throughout Paradise. Be sure to register your badge at the museum for a chance at winning a genuine gold nugget.

When Kids Reject Sports: Keeping Kids Active When They Avoid Team Sports

Team sports are a great way to keep kids active, but not all kids enjoy playing sports. When kids avoid team sports, parents look for other ways their children can continue to be healthy and active. How can you get your kids moving around when they are not a part of a sports team?

Encourage Lifelong Activities

Choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as biking, swimming, walking, and hiking.

These activities are great because while they can be done individually, for a lifetime, they also can be enjoyed as a family. Encourage everyone to go on a walk or bike ride together, hike in a local park, or spend the day at the pool. Get a step counter for each family member and create a friendly competition to see who can get the most steps.

Go Outside

Simply getting your kids outside can be a great way to sneak in exercise. Visit a local park, encourage them to climb trees, swing, or play tag. Have your child go on a “treasure hunt” in the backyard and collect items that interest them like sticks, rocks, flowers, or leaves. Catching bugs in the summer, building a snowman in the winter, or raking leaves in the fall, all help kids to be active while not playing a sport.

Individual Sports

Just because your child does not enjoy team sports, does not mean they may not enjoy an individual sport. Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, wrestling, diving, archery, golf, or weight lifting, are all good examples of individual sports where children compete against themselves.

Limit Screen Time

When screen time is allowed, try to encourage them to move while they are watching television. If a song comes on, get up and dance, or march along. If they are playing video games, encourage games that involve movement. If the child is sedentary while enjoying screen time, ask them to complete some sort of activity, like chores or outdoor play before they turn the television or tablet on.

Set an Example

Children learn by example. If the parent has a low activity level, the child will most likely see exercise as a low priority.

Lead by example and get moving. Begin an exercise routine or a hobby that includes movement, like gardening, and invite your child to join you. Make the most of the time together.

Dance and Theater

Turn on the music and have a family dance party. There is nothing like a great song to get a body moving. Dancing is fun and is great exercise, too. Some children may also enjoy trying dance classes, baton twirling, or cheerleading. All of these are a great source of exercise. If your child is drawn to music and theater, get them involved in a theater production in school or your community.

Find a New Hobby

Encourage your child to find a hobby that encourages movement and activity, such as skateboarding, fishing, bowling, or woodworking. If the child is doing something they enjoy, they will not even notice they are also exercising.

Play

Leisure sports can be more fun for kids that do not care for team sports because they are less competitive, and therefore have less pressure to perform at a higher level. Encouraging kids to play gets them active. Playing Frisbee or Frisbee golf, tag, catch, shooting hoops, and duck-duck goose, all require kids to run around. They will be having so much fun; they won’t notice they are exercising.

Chores

Chores are a great way to get kids active and teach them the value of hard work at the same time. Ask your child to clean their room, vacuum, mow the lawn, or sweep. Consider paying them an allowance for more motivation.

While team sports have many benefits, they are not for everyone. Kids who do not enjoy team sports do not have to be less active. With these tips, kids will enjoy an active lifestyle that can be maintained for a lifetime.

Ask any local parent for their favorite Sacramento spot for kids and the Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town, and Funderland in the 166 acre William Land Park, are always high on the list. The Sacramento Zoo has been remodeled, expanded and now features more than 140 native, endangered or threatened species, in a lush park environment. As a part of the zoo’s new Nature Explorer program,

Across the street, younger children will feel transported into a dream world at Fairytale Town. Or, for good old fashioned amusement park fun, head across the way to Funderland, where kids can ride the mini sized roller coasters, tea cups, and other thrilling rides Blending education with fun is always a winning combination, and there is no better place to explore both than in Old Sacramento. As you enter the 28 acre town of historic buildings, constructed in the mid 1800s, you will step back in time to the California Gold Rush era. Wooden sidewalks, horse drawn carriages, old fashioned candy shops, and a Mississippi style riverboat offer a hands-on introduction to early Golden State history. Children of all ages will love the interactive experiences, such as riding on a steam train, peeking inside a one room schoolhouse, or dressing in period costumes for an “old fashioned” family photo. With “Living History,” volunteers roaming the town in period costume from the 1850s, Old Sacramento is the perfect setting for a fun and interactive history lesson.

Families can even explore under the streets of Old Sacramento to see what the city looked like before it was raised up to accommodate flood waters in the Old West.

The California State Railroad Museum should definitely be on your itinerary.

The museum is one of the largest train museums in the country, and kids get to climb aboard the trains, listen to reenactments, learn about how a steam engine works, and interact with the incredibly knowledgeable docents.

Do not miss the $1 million toy train collection!

The California Museum is also a must. It is home of the California Hall of Fame and engages, educates, and enlightens people about California’s rich history and unique contributions to the world. Through interactive and innovative experiences, the Museum inspires men, women and children to pursue the California dream and make a mark on history.

Easy Weekday Muffins This recipe makes about 50 muffins. The great thing about it is that the batter last ups to 6 weeks in the refrigerator, so you can make as little or as many muffins as you would like. They are perfect for those rushed weekday mornings, or as an after-school snack; just bake what you need and save the batter for another day! This recipe is so versatile and great for picky eaters; you can add nuts, chopped fresh or dried fruit, chocolate chips, or anything else your children like, to the individual muffin cups just prior to baking.

Ingredients 5 cups flour 3 cups sugar 4 tsp baking soda 2 tsp salt 1 cup oil or applesauce 4 eggs 1 quart buttermilk 1 ½ boxes (15 oz) of Uncle Sam Cereal or cereal of your choice Instructions Mix all ingredients gently until combined. Refrigerate at least 8 hours before first use. Do not stir the batter again. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 400 degrees, scoop the desired amount of muffins into a lightly greased muffin pan, and bake for about 15-20 minutes.

Toilet paper roll Yellow and black construction paper 1 black pipe cleaner 2 googly eyes 1 large yellow puff ball Glue or tape

Instructions

Cover the toilet paper roll in yellow paper. Cut black strips of paper and place over the yellow toilet paper roll for the stripes. Trace your child’s hands on yellow paper and cut out for the wings. Glue or tape the wings on each side of the roll.

Place a puff ball on one end of the roll; add eyes and a pipe cleaner for antennas.

Side Note: While doing this project with your child, discuss what bees do and how important they are.

Egg Carton Flowers Materials

Egg carton Paint Craft stick 1 large yellow puff ball Glue

Instructions

Cut out 4 egg holders from the egg carton and paint them. Paint a craft stick green for the stem and glue onto the back of the egg carton. Glue a puff ball into the center of the egg carton.
