DeAnna Holman DeAnna is a 5th grade teacher at Ponderosa Elementary School in Paradise and mother of three who is working as a freelance writer, editor, and graphic artist (She also owns a booth at Eight and Main Antiques). She does layouts and assists in editing Growing Up Chico!

Rodger Helwig Originally from the East Coast, Rodger, a board member of the Museum of Northern California Art (monca), moved to Chico three years ago after living 25 years in San Francisco. He is a graduate of Boston University, where he was a documentary filmmaker, with an art history concentration, and now is a fine art photographer with a specialization in floral photography. Since coming to Chico, he has become an avid cyclist and serves on the hospitality team at Bidwell Presbyterian church.

Jan Holman Jan has been a resident of Durham for 46 years and is one of Durham’s historians. She has lived in Chico, Sacramento, Orland and the Bay Area. She worked as a high school Physical Education teacher before staying home with her 3 sons. She has three grandchildren with whom she spends a great deal of time. She is a Durham historian and serves on the board at the Patrick Ranch Museum and she volunteers a large amount of time at the Ranch, as she was a dear friend of Hester Patrick.

A Step Back in Time Patrick Ranch Museum’s 16th Annual Threshing Bee

tepping through the Patrick Ranch Museum’s gates on Threshing Bee day is truly a magical experience! You, like the young Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, can travel to another time and place. With three clicks of your heels, you will be transported back a century in time to be overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of horses and men at work, tilled earth, cut dried wheat, primitive tractor engines popping, and the unforgettable sound of a steam engine’s whistle.

pitched onto wagons and transported to the thresher. The thresher separates the grains of wheat from the stalk, blows the stalks into a giant pile, and shunts the grains of wheat into burlap sacks. What a monumental increase in productivity from years before when the wheat was cut by farmhands using a sickle! The next step in the process is exciting, too! Some of the wheat is ground into flour and children can move to the biscuit making venue and make their own biscuits! From field to mouth in minutes!

The twenty-eight acres of the Patrick Ranch is teaming with activities for every age and interest. Small engine enthusiasts

are set up under the shade of grand Valley Oaks, demonstrating the use of their specialty engines; a stationary tractor exhibit will be located in front of the grand farmhouse; and the ranch’s carriage collection will be displayed in the yard.

The University of California Master Gardner mini gardens offer a treasure trove of visual ideas! Visitors will be intrigued by live bee exhibits (all selfcontained), including demonstration hives and bee beard demonstrations. The chickens will be in and out of their coop to let the little ones know that we really do get eggs from chickens and not from the grocery store!

Moving to the ranch corral, visitors are treated to stock dog demonstrations without equal! Al Viera, our valley’s own world famous stock dog trainer, brings award winning stock dogs and puppies to demonstrate their extraordinary ability to control and herd sheep! Observing the connection the dogs have with Al is an unforgettable moment in itself!

Another treasured experience is afforded visitors when they visit the working forges of the Patrick Ranch Blacksmith Club members. To watch the blacksmiths heat metal and work it into tools, or pieces of art, is a true step back in time! Tractors were not in wide spread use until the 1920s. Until that time, the world depended on the blacksmith for everything from farm implements to pots and pans and needles to nails!!

Kids, Kids, Kids! Providing activities for kids of all ages is always a major focus at the Threshing Bee. There are pedal tractors to ride, kids’ crafts, “fishing” in the fountain, rope making, and a challenge to pack a covered wagon for the trip west - an intriguing exercise for the entire family! Seniors and families can tour the grounds in a tractor-pulled people mover and pony cart rides are a popular venue.

The Grand, two-story, thirteen room Glenwood Farmhouse, built in 1877, has fireplaces in nine of its rooms. Four of the main rooms on the first floor have beautiful faux marble fireplaces, three topped with large, ornate mirrors. Every room in the house is furnished with family furniture, books, dishes, and vases dating from the mid 1800s to the 1930s. A tour of the house is a grand experience – definitely a trip back in time!

The food court offers a selection of menus for every age. Patrons are

encouraged to enjoy their meals at tables and chairs placed on the front and back lawns. Live music is provided at midday.

Wandering minstrels add a relaxing ambiance to your visit!

The Patrick Ranch Visitor Center, with its museum displays and gift shop is a “must see” destination at the ranch. The ever changing museum displays focus on multiple topics, from tools to nuts and bees. The gift shop is a shopper’s dream! There is very reasonably priced blown glass, exciting educational books for children of all ages, yard

art, local food products, specialty bird houses, history resource books, and art work on consignment. It is a shopper’s paradise for those looking for the unique affordable gift.

The visitor’s Threshing Bee experience will be enhanced this year with train exhibits, including interactive children’s activities, model trains on display, and a discussion of the impact of the arrival of trains on local agriculture. The C&O Railroad reached Chico on July 4, 1870, bringing with it reliable transportation for the valley’s wheat crops, thus allowing us to develop into the “bread basket” for the United States! The Northern Electric was completed through Chico in 1906, bringing a convenient source of transportation and electricity to local communities. This will be a terrific addition that’s not to be missed!

Art and Children A New Art Museum

A

t the new Museum of Northern California Art (monca) on the Esplanade in Chico, children and children’s programs are an important part of our community outreach.

When families and children think of their ABCs, they think of school, the alphabet, getting together with old and new friends, teachers, blackboards, books, laughing, playing, and learning.

We look at the ABCs a bit differently at monca: we look them as a way for Art to Build Community. By creating vital educational programs for children, monca hopes to build a better quality of life for them and everyone in the community.

The goal is to be more than just a place with art hanging on the walls. It is to be a place where people can interact with art and each other.

Memorial Hall on the Esplanade, monca has become the cultural hub of Chico, inspiring people of all ages to experience and create art while engaging them in world-class art works, including: paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, photography, and more from nearly 100 artists in Northern California.

Reaching Out To Children Here are some of the ways monca has reached out to area children:

Explorer’s Faire

This past January, monca participated in the Glenn County Eighth Grade Explorer’s Faire. The event was held at the fairgrounds in Orland, where more than 400 students from surrounding school districts were introduced to the museum.

Outings with Artists

With funding from a grant from the city of Chico, we take students from area schools into an artist’s studio for a day

where there is a tour of the artist’s studio and conversation about art as a career, followed by lunch.

During one session with local artist Dylan Tellesen, the students were encouraged to actively participate in a wall mural at the CSU Graduate studios. monca continues to find new and exciting ways to expand these programs.

Field Trips to the Museum

Field trips are encouraged. Students are taken on a guided tour of the space and the exhibition before spending time creating art work of their own.

Last December, Sheri Simons brought her CSU drawing students on one of these tours. “Today I took a group of drawing students to an extraordinary museum.

We did not drive our usual three-hour field trip route to San Francisco. Instead, we walked ten minutes to monca where my students spent the next two hours working on drawings. In response to

the James Kuiper exhibition, we came away with the valuable experience of sitting in an inspiring space, looking at original artwork, and being welcomed by a knowledgeable staff of people who love what they are doing and the place they have created. monca is a gem in the arts and education community.�

We strive to educate the public about both northern California art and the museum itself, with a special emphasis on reaching out to communities that have been typically under served by arts nonprofits.

The monca School Bus Brings Art to Classrooms...and Beyond

Through another grant by the city of Chico, monca is able to support families in need with ongoing art activities at the museum. Recently, participants enjoyed creating masks, inspired by artwork featured during the James Kuiper exhibition.

In our first year as a new organization, we purchased a small school bus and created the Mobile Museum. This Educational Outreach program takes Driving Docents into primarily third grade classrooms, but the lesson can be adjusted for any grade.

Through this investment, our volunteer Driving Docents can bring original art and creative activities to all kinds of venues, including: schools, senior centers, kids clubs, homeless shelters, juvenile halls, and community events.

Supporting Families in Need with Art Activities

In addition, as a way for area arts educators to become familiar with what the museum can offer them and their students, monca held a reception in December where they had the opportunity to meet fellow educators, artists, and members of the monca board of directors.

What better way to spend quality time with your family and get in touch with nature than a fresh, invigorating walk in the woods, along a river, or the beach? What’s more, family hikes make for fun learning opportunities for kids and parents alike. Try some of these hiking activities with your youngsters.

Sounds of Nature

Wander through a forest and listen carefully for a variety of bird and animal sounds. Before you go, visit your library for a video or audio cassette of birds and wild animal calls. Carry an audio cassette player on your hike, and record some of the sounds you hear. Listen to the recording again at home and play a game of detective to determine the source of the sounds you can’t make out. Search the Internet, encyclopedias, and books to discover the makers of the mystery calls.

Capture nature’s splendor. Hiking trails provide plenty of photo opportunities, and kids will love snapping the shots. Discuss in advance what each family member wants to photograph, such as a huge oak tree, a monarch butterfly, deer tracks, or a close-up of a nibbling squirrel.

When you get home, print out the best photos and create a nature scrapbook with them.

A Stone is a Stone is a…Mineral?

Go on an excursion to learn about rocks and minerals. Shorelines offer a variety of stones. Before you go, learn which rocks and minerals are abundant in the area, and have each family member choose several to scout for. Take along a small plastic container with dividers, a descriptive rock and mineral guide, and a magnifying glass for viewing the colors, layers, and details. As you identify stones and minerals, discuss their uses and other neat facts.

Tree Tales

These giants of nature are not only intriguing because of their sometimes-massive size, but also because of the variety and history behind them. Borrow some books on trees from your library that describe the unique features of trees and that offer history on them. Use clues, such as the shape of the tree’s leaves, the texture of its bark, and even its size to determine the kind of tree.

Animals All Around

Plant Life, Old and New Discover, with your kids, the fantastic diversity of plant life. Before you head out, review some books on plants to spark your children’s interest.

On each hiking trip, choose a different trail or area and see what plants grow in certain types of soil, climates, and in each season. As you inspect plants, look for their seeds, and notice the variations. Talk about how seeds travel by blowing in the wind or catching on the fur of animals. Carefully brush away ground covering and look for seeds that have sprouted their roots that will soon develop into a new plant or tree. Learn how certain plants have evolved to have natural defenses to protect against creatures that would otherwise devour them.

Creepy, Crawly Things

Take a quiet hike in a wooded area with grassy clearings, and see how many animals you meet. Watch for snakes, turtles, and geese if there is a nearby lake or stream. Also, look for chipmunks and squirrels playing chase or gathering food; birds of prey circling overhead; or grazing rabbits and deer. Discuss the animal’s unique features and how those qualities help or hinder the animal. Talk about what the animals eat, their shelters, and species to which they are related. Keep eyes peeled for animal tracks to identify and determine how recently they were made.

Scouting for insects is an all-time favorite among kids, and the variety of creepy crawly creatures in the woods is remarkable. Carry an insect book, clear container, tweezers, and a magnifying glass for close examination of insects’ fascinating features. Bring a journal and track the types of OUR insects you find. Read about insects’ defense FAVORITES behaviors and characteristics, such as colors that indicate danger to predators.

Which Way Do We Go? Roam the countryside and teach your children directional skills, such as how to read a map and use a compass or the sun to determine direction.

Before setting out, choose a trail system that provides maps, or make up your own. Take a trail that branches off several times, allowing for plenty of skill-building opportunities. For even more fun, turn the excursion into a treasure hunt. Hide a small prize just off the trail under a bush or pile of leaves, mark the location on your map, and let the journey begin.

Plan your activities before you leave so you’ll arrive prepared. For your comfort and convenience, carry a small daypack, extra clothing for cold air along trails, and do not forget hiking boots. For your protection, bring along hats, sunglasses, sunblock, and insect repellent. Be prepared for emergencies by carrying a small flashlight and batteries, watch, map, bandages, and don’t forget plenty of water and snacks.

Finally, make the most of your nature quest by carrying binoculars, a magnifying glass, and a small camera.

Summertime Skincare

“Summer summer summertime.

Time to sit back and unwind.”

T

hese are the first two lines of one of my favorite summer anthems – the popular 2002,“Summertime,” by Will Smith, affectionately known then as the Fresh Prince.

I

ronically, at the time of this song’s release, I was deep in the weeds of medical school, studying furiously day and night at my assigned cubicle in the cold dark library. I was neither sitting back, nor unwinding.

Nor was I enjoying the beautiful sunshine that the Fresh Prince implied.

I

was, in fact, studying the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) light on our skin cells. UV light harms the DNA, or functioning parts of our skin cells. Under normal conditions, small or intermittent doses of UV light causes damage that can be repaired quickly and effectively; however, chronic, excessive, or intense amounts of UV light damages our cells’ ability to repair itself. This damaged DNA then results in skin cancer and “photoaging,” such as premature wrinkles, black or brown spots, or extreme redness.

N

ow that I’m older, wiser, and far-less uptight, I have come to appreciate both the negative and beneficial effects of sunlight. The sun converts UV light to Vitamin D within our skin. Vitamin D is important for a whole host of cellular and bodily functions. Without it, we can suffer from a plethora of maladies like fatigue, mood dysfunction,

and joint pain, just to name a few.

Put simply, the sun just makes us feel good. Like all things, of course, we should approach the summer months and our relationship with the sun with moderation.

M

oderation, in the form of proper sun protection, includes the use of protective clothing, avoiding prolonged peak UV-times, and wearing proper sunscreen. Broadbrimmed hats, pants, and longsleeved shirts exemplify the types of clothes that help protect us from the sun. Brands like Coolibar, Solbari, and LL Bean are lightly weighted and fashionable brands that complement any comprehensive sun protective regimen.

T

he UV-index, a measurement of the sun’s intensity and therefore its likelihood of causing skin cancer, is highest between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Therefore, we should do our best to reduce prolonged sun exposure during these times.

I find this fact encouraging since in the summertime, although the temperature is much hotter around 4:00 pm, the UV index is actually much lower by this time.

F

inally, we should all be wearing sunscreen with an SPF between 30 and 50. A sunscreen with an SPF of 30 will block approximately 97% of UV rays, while a sunscreen with an SPF of 50 will block closer to 99% of UV rays. Therefore, it is not necessary to seek or apply sunscreens with excessively high SPF numbers, as there is only a very marginal protective benefit above

an SPF of 50. I once saw a sunscreen with an SPF 2000 rating, an absurdity that made me laugh out loud. It’s also important to remember to reapply our sunscreens. successful, but afterward the baby cried often, holding her little body tightly, as if she expected another emergency helicopter ride. After six CST sessions, she transformed into a relaxed infant. One of the sessions was for Jess, because she was also traumatized by their early separation. Caregivers and babies are so closely connected that the baby easily feels their stress.

In Jess’s CST session we added therapeutic dialogue and imagery to create the ideal birth she had wanted. She visualized her baby being delivered smoothly and placed immediately in her arms. She felt her baby’s skin against her own as they lay together in a calm birthing room, their bond deepening. Imagination has the power to trigger the release of chemicals and hormones. After the session, Jess reported a weight had been lifted and she felt more joyful.

CranioSacral Therapy for Infants

Does your baby have breastfeeding issues like trouble latching, flailing, or vomiting?

Do you have an infant that cries even though you have fed and changed them?

These are common challenges for parents, so it is understandable that, according to the Center for Disease Control, only 55% of babies are nursed for the recommended six-months or more.

CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle and effective treatment that helps babies nurse, digest, sleep, and move with greater ease.

Here are a few recent stories from my CranioSacral Therapy practice in Chico. Names are changed for privacy.

Support for Nursing

Dylan had a shallow latch on the breast and was not getting enough milk. In the middle of feeding, he would break off and cry. He was losing weight and his mother, Autumn, was worried and frustrated.

When we started the session, Dylan was crying loudly, so his mother cradled him on a pillow on her lap. I quieted my mind before I placed my hands on his body. As my fingers felt the subtle movement of the cerebral spinal fluid, he slowly relaxed and the upset calmed. I felt tension in the temporal and mandible bones that form the jaw. These bones allow the nursing baby to suck efficiently and if they are restricted, the baby cannot open its mouth wide enough to make a deep latch.

With some gentle techniques, using no more than 1 gram of pressure, the jaw released. Both mother and child softened and stilled. The next day, Autumn called to say that Dylan nursed more comfortably after the session, and that he slept for a longer period during the night.

Overcoming Trauma

Mia was whisked away from her mother, Jess, within minutes after birth and flown to Davis for surgery. The procedure was

CST is a light touch modality that was developed from osteopathy in the 1970s by Dr. John Upledger. With a team of scientists at Michigan State University, Dr. Upledger proved the existence of the craniosacral system and created a therapy to enhance its function. He discovered it had numerous health benefits for people of all ages, from easing headaches, back pain and PTSD, to relieving depression and autism. I was fortunate to study directly with Dr. Upledger, and to be a teaching assistant for him before he passed in 2012. He was passionate about supporting newborns with CST to give them the healthiest start and to avoid future complications.

Infant Cranial Bones

The bones in a baby’s head are not fully formed. There are soft spots called fontanelles, and the cranial bones are in several pieces. This allows the cranial bones to overlap in the birth canal for an easier passage, and to expand afterward as the brain grows.

Problems may occur if the birthing process requires the doctor to pull or twist the baby’s neck, or to intervene with forceps or vacuum traction. Pitocin, a medication used to induce labor, causes very strong contractions. A C-section birth may create an abrupt pressure change for baby’s delicate tissues. These actions may be necessary, but can contribute to restrictions in the infant’s cranial bones. This, in turn, impedes the movement of the cerebral spinal fluid, and may impinge the cranial nerves emerging from the base of the skull.

Feeling the Flow

The cranial bones widen and narrow to accommodate the production and re-absorption of the cerebral spinal fluid. I can palpate the movement of these fluids and it tells me the location of restrictions. I never force a release. Instead, I hold the area with intention, recognizing the infant’s inner wisdom that naturally moves towards balance.

After waiting patiently, a release happens with a sigh, a softening, an opening and a lengthening.

Conclusion

CST is considered complimentary to medical care. I suggest parents visit their pediatricians and lactation consultants for diagnoses and guidance. I am thrilled to do my part to support a baby’s first weeks on the planet, and to help parents have peace at home.

ids and teens are constantly changing. The transition from a nap-resistant energetic toddler to a teen who sleeps until noon can seem like a flash in time. With rapid growth and significant changes going on, how can parents tell which changes are normal? Should parents be worried that their child’s tantrums or teenager’s mood swings may be something more than just age appropriate “growing pains?” It can sometimes be hard to tell. For some kids, these changes are not just a part of growing up—they may actually indicate symptoms of an underlying mental illness.

In young people, many mental illnesses- about 50-70%- show up before age 18. Mental and emotional troubles can have a significant impact on a child’s development. It may affect a child’s performance in school and their social interactions and relationships with other kids and adults. When not treated early, mental illnesses can disrupt normal development and may affect children for the rest of their lives. Sometimes families do not seek help because of lack of information or possibly because of the stigma associated with mental illness. But, if kids get help early on, effective treatments can help improve their lives now and in the future.

One of the challenges when addressing a child’s mental health is finding available services. Here in Butte County, a new web site has been created to guide parents and professionals toward effectively locating children’s mental health services in their community.

Butte 2-1-1 and the Butte County Department of Public Health have partnered to create a free public web site which includes a searchable resource guide to help Butte County residents find mental health providers serving children and youth ages 0-18. The web site is found at www.mentalhealth4youth. net and contains more than 200 low-cost and no-cost mental health resources, including crisis hotlines and crisis intervention, counseling services, mental health evaluation and treatment services, plus

prevention and support groups. The site also includes many resources to support parents, especially new moms who may be dealing with extreme new challenges.

The web site was designed as a simple and convenient tool to be used by anyone who cares for, or interacts with children. Parents, teachers, health professionals, home visitors, social workers, child care providers, police officers, coaches, religious counselors, and relatives can use the online resource guide to help children who could benefit from diagnosis or treatment services related to mental health.

“When a child has behavior issues, or a teen is struggling with anxiety, or a toddler is not reaching developmental milestones, parents, health care providers, or teachers may need help finding services for the child and family,” said Tara Sullivan-Hames, the Director of Butte 2-1-1 and project manager. “This web site helps them take the next steps in finding information and learn what services are available to help that child.

Using the web site, they can locate programs that will evaluate mental health needs and offer counseling, therapies, and other types of mental health support.”

The objective of the new project is to address our community’s need to improve access to mental health services for children and youth. Local assessments of community health indicate that one in five children experience mental health challenges. Another study determined that Butte County residents register the highest scores in California for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). ACES are trauma-related experiences in childhood that result in not only mental and emotional health challenges, but also physical illnesses and disabilities. “With ACES being a crucial topic of awareness in Butte County, this project supports early identification and early intervention to help little ones thrive,” said Sullivan-Hames.

The mentalhealth4youth web site has been structured into four main categories and 16 specific

subcategories of mental health services. The intent is to guide the user into search topics that will identify appropriate resources.

Services listed on the web site cover a wide range of mental health needs for very young children as well as teens. The resource guide includes telephone hotlines and texting lines for suicide prevention, group, individual, and family counseling, play therapy and parent child interactive therapy for young children, support groups for children who are grieving the death of a loved one, child guidance for behavior disorders and developmental guidance, assessments for autism or for psychiatric disorders, anger management, and prevention services related to relationship violence. Many of the services accept Medi-Cal plans, offer sliding scale fees, or accept payment through Victim Witness funds.

The web site also includes a link to a searchable directory of private therapists.

The online tool also allows users to refine searches by choosing filtering search options. Users can select the city where the child and family is located, the age of the child, what type of insurance or payment is accepted, and whether language services are available for Spanish and Hmong speaking clients. The filter function helps professionals identify referrals to give the family and helps parents know which services can offer immediate assistance for their child.

The resource information also includes some handy tools for making referrals easily. Referral information can be texted to a client’s cell phone or sent to an email address. A one-click link also displays a location map of the service which can be printed out or a map link can be sent by text or email. “Being able to text or email the information to a parent or to a caseworker is really a great tool for improving access to services. Any way we can get that information into the hands of parents where they can act on it, the better the hope that the child and family will receive the

help they need,” said Sullivan-Hames. Recognizing the reality of busy families and professionals, the site is also optimized for mobile devices.

Parents and care givers are integral for successfully accessing services. The web site includes supportive services for parents to help them learn about their children’s mental health needs and also to support their own well-being. In particular, the Mothers Strong project is listed to help new moms who may be struggling with pregnancy related or postpartum depression and/or anxiety. This resource includes information on mental health screening for moms and access to therapists and support groups which in turn produces healthier outcomes for newborns and other children in the household.

Resource information included on the mentalhealth4youth web site is being updated as part of the comprehensive Butte 2-1-1 community resource database. The web site will receive an annual update at minimum, but in actuality, most of the resources will be updated more frequently and on demand as needed when services change. “We are counting on the service providers to keep 2-1-1 informed of any changes in the programs and services,” said Sullivan-Hames. “We’ll

be contacting them regularly for updates, and as soon as they notify the 2-1-1 specialists that there are changes, the corrected database information will update automatically on the mentalhealth4youth web site.”

There is also a feedback survey posted on the web site. Users can answer a couple of questions about their search for services and send the feedback directly to Butte 2-1-1 staff. This will help support accurate and timely information updates.

Do not worry if the thought of using the online search seems overwhelming! If you are unable to locate an appropriate mental health service on the mentalhealth4youth web site, you can call or text 2-1-1 directly for live help. Simply dial 2-1-1 or text your zip code to 898211 to speak with a 2-1-1 information and referral specialist (If the situation is an emergency, dial 911). Your inquiry with 2-1-1 is always confidential. The Butte 2-1-1 specialists are trained social workers who can assess the needs of the caller, help identify appropriate resources and options, and offer follow up support. 2-1-1 is open 24/7 and is a free service, serving Butte and Glenn County residents.

Mama & Me Cambric Tea

A warm beverage is a comforting way to start the day. It is also a way to have a cozy break in the afternoon while the little ones are napping. In honor of Mother’s Day, the next time you stop to savor a sip, invite your children to join you in a pot of Cambric Tea. Cambric is an American word used to describe a warm beverage made of milk, sugar, and just a bit of tea. Our family first discovered Cambric Tea while we were reading The Little House on the Prairie books. Boys and girls alike will enjoy a tea party! It’s a wonderful way to teach your children to sip and savor the moment; it is a good reminder for Mama, too!! All you need is: milk, sugar, hot water, and tea (we enjoy chamomile tea which is caffeine free and calming). Prepare your tea as directed. Cambric is mostly milk and sugar, so prepare your tea cups individually with 2/3 of the cup full of milk, sugar to your liking, and just a dash of tea over the top. Children will enjoy stirring their tea and spending time with you in this usuallyreserved-for-mama activity. Enjoy the company of your little ones, for the days are long and the years are short!

Rainbow Spaghetti Sensory Play

When the weather gets warmer, it is fun to play outside...and take the mess with you!! Sensory play is always a huge hit with littles of all ages. Rainbow Spaghetti is a great activity to make, as well as for play. The supplies list is simple, but the entertainment value is big. Everything you need is just a dollar store trip away! You will want to gather spaghetti noodles (we used 1 small package per color: red, yellow, orange, green, blue, and purple), food coloring in each color, 1 gallon sized zip-lock bag for each color, buckets or bowls for each color of dyed spaghetti, and a tub, small wading pool, or even the bath tub for playtime. Cook the spaghetti as usual and rinse in cool water. Add the cooked spaghetti to each zip-lock bag. Now here’s the fun in the making!! Drop a few drops of food coloring into the zip-lock bag, zip it tight, and SHAKE, SQUISH gently, and ROLL it until the spaghetti is well coated. Let the dyed spaghetti set in the closed bag while you finish making the other colors.

When you are finished dying all of the spaghetti, dump each color into a bucket. (We love colored plastic buckets from the dollar store for our creative play!) Dump each color into its matching color bucket. Now the fun begins!

We used a small wading pool outside on the grass. First, the individual buckets were passed around and explored as a single color. Then we started mixing...and stirring...and WOW, did it get crazy beautiful as a rainbow emerged from the spaghetti! The beauty of playing outside in the grass was that the clean-up was easy.

Patriotic Firecracker Spray Painting

RED - WHITE – BLUE: fireworks are spectacular in the night sky as well as a fun and creative patriotic craft!

Not only is this activity easy, it also packs a big bang for the buck with lots of sensory excitement. The “OHHH” of the splat as the paint hits the paper, the “EEEE” of the dripping and blending colors make for an “A-HA” moment of creative expression. Gather these items: white paper of any size, a clothes line on which to hang the paintings, clothes pins for fastening the paper to the line, 1 spray bottle for each color, tempera paint in colors of your choice, and a drop of dish soap for each spray bottle. Fill each spray bottle 3/4 full of water. Add a drop of dish soap and a big squirt of tempera paint. Shake the bottle to mix well. The paint should be very runny so it easily sprays out of the nozzle. This activity works best if the clothesline is hung against a fence so that the paper hangs against the fence as a support. Simply hang the paper on the line and arm each artist with a spray bottle.

They will know what to do! As the paint sprays out of the bottle and splats against the paper, it will make a great sound! As the paint drips and blends with the others, little ones will explore colors. Let the art dry on the line in the sun and watch as the designs change and new colors emerge. Try wetting the paper first to see what happens to the paint. Add stickers or transparent tape to the paper for a color resist experiment. The discovery is limitless!

It was first performed by the Ballet du Théâtre de l’Académie Royale de Musique at the Salle Le Peletier in Paris, France in 1841.
