Can't miss events this fall!

Fall is my favorite time of year in Chico. We aren’t called the City of Trees for no reason! From downtown to Bidwell Park and up into the ridge, the leaves are beginning to change from green to red, making for a beautiful backdrop for your next family outing. With the weather cooling down, I’m even more excited for a good excuse to get out of the house with my little one.

Chico Renaissance & Fantasy Faire Prepare for a day of enchantment and adventure as the Chico Renaissance & Fantasy Faire™ returns to the picturesque Patrick Ranch Museum on September 12th, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Chico Day of the Dead Festival Divine Sundays is excited to bring back the 4th Annual Chico Day of the Dead Festival! This free event will take place at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds on Sunday, November 1st from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bringing together cultural education and community celebration, the Day of the Dead Festival is the perfect place to celebrate your Día de los Muertos. Event highlights include a lowrider car show, free photo booth, live mural paintings, and an educational scavenger hunt.

Movies in the Park Throw on your Halloween costume, grab your blankets and lawn chairs, and join us at DeGarmo Park for our Halloween Movies in the Park! The fun kicks off on Friday, October 30th at 5 p.m. with spooky (and family-friendly) activities, hauntingly delicious treats from local food trucks, and of course, free movie theater popcorn. At 6:15 p.m., join the fun in our Halloween Costume Contest Parade and show off your best costumes! At dusk (around 6:45 p.m.), sit back and watch your favorite characters from Hocus Pocus 2 come to life on the big screen. It’s a spooky night of Halloween fun you won’t want to miss!

Back-to-school motherhood mess I don’t know about you, but when school starts back up, it almost feels like I’m hitting the play button on my life again. Summer is fun. Everyone is a little feral, tired, amped up on sugar and sunshine, and life is just chaos in the best way.

But once school begins, it’s time to reset the tone for our home. Time to get my kids—and myself—back into the rhythm of things. I’m a firstborn daughter, and I THRIVE on organization and routine. This part of motherhood was made for me.

Summer Jillian—the no-schedule, sunshineand-chaos version of myself—takes work.

That mindset shift doesn’t come naturally to me. And while it’s amazing to spend a couple of months simply playing together, I’m always ready for a little more structure.

Honestly, I think my kids are too.

I’ve been thinking about how I want to “hit the play button” on life again once school starts, so I figured I’d share a few things I’m looking forward to bringing back into our routine.

The first, and my absolute favorite, is praying together on the drive to school. It’s become such a sweet way to check in with my kids about any anxieties or worries they’re carrying before they walk through those school doors. It has also become a space where I can be honest with them about

what’s going on in my own life. We pray for each other, and it’s easily my favorite part of the day. And then, we all floss. Routine, I tell you, is non-negotiable around here.

Another thing I started last year was baking some kind of treat for my kids every Monday so they’d come home to something special after school. It sounds so simple, but it really set the tone for our week. They felt loved, and honestly, it made me feel like the kind of mom I want to be. It’s one of those things I hope they’ll remember forever.

Finally, the holy grail of mom advice: Do all of your laundry on Thursday. Fold it and put it away on Friday. Give the house a quick clean, and then enjoy your weekend. I used to spend Saturdays playing catch-up while watching everyone else make memories with their families. I was always folding laundry, cleaning the floors, or trying to get ahead for Monday. Not anymore.

Now you can find me at the park, playing board games, grabbing ice cream, or just soaking up time with my family because the work is already done. It’s such a small shift, but it has made a huge difference in how our weekends feel.

So here’s to fresh rhythms, full lunch boxes, Monday cookies, and making the most of another year we get to spend loving and watching our kids grow.

William Finch Charter: Pioneering Hybrid Education Programs

What started in the corner of the public library in 1985 with a dozen families interested in county-supported homeschooling has expanded into a full K-12 program with over 160 students. This school, with its rich history, continues to offer an independent study program geared specifically to every individual who attends.

Dan LaBar, principal of William Finch Charter in Orland, emphasizes, “We really try and meet the students where they’re at and help them grow from there.” The school offers a variety of program styles for families. They have a traditional homeschooling program with textbooks that is led by the home educator, a more virtual learning style with online curriculum, and a small campus with opportunities for group classes and enrichment.

The campus visits for K-5 occur once a week and consist of field trips to Turtle Bay, movement and music activities, engaging Spanish lessons, and a variety of projects designed by the high school students who are involved in the child development program.

The on-campus middle school academy for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders allows students to attend English, math, and various elective classes in person with other students of similar abilities. Dan shares that the math classes are in flexible groupings based on academic needs and proficiency rather than age. The students have these classes together, then lunch on campus, which helps facilitate social connections that may be harder to find in a homeschooling environment. After lunch, they head to a rotating elective, which could include ceramics, Spanish, e-sports, or a different class that teachers are interested in bringing to the school.

The campus high school offers two days of full, fiveperiod group classes. This is a hybrid program with a combination of independent study and on-campus classes. Dan explains that the school’s flexibility allows students to create a schedule that suits their needs. “Some of our high schoolers might come for one or two classes in person and the rest of their time is spent in independent study. This enables them to also gain experience working during the school day, which may give them an advantage over traditional high school students.” William Finch Charter is proud to offer three different high school career pathways: Audio Recording, Digital Media, and Child

Development. Each of these pathways also offers some dual enrollment classes with Butte College.

The school is introducing a new visual aid describing their program. Their Pioneer Path features the school mascot guiding them along in their journey.

Base Camp represents elementary school. It’s here that they learn basic skills for their educational journey, including literacy, basic number sense, and quantitative reasoning.

Then they move to the Trail Head, which represents middle school. At this point in their journey, they’re exploring and finding their path. Dan explains it’s during this time students are often “trying things on. They’re asking themselves, ‘Do I like this type of music or these types of clothes? Who are my friends and what are my passions?’” It’s really a time of selfexploration.

Finally, they arrive at the Four Summits, which represent the different paths they may be taking: earning their diploma, entering the workforce, enlisting in the armed services, or enrolling in college.

Dan stresses, “We want them to climb one of those mountains, and we want to prepare them for whatever summit they are aiming for through their independent study program.”

He explains that there are a variety of reasons families may look to begin homeschooling. Whether it’s a family looking for more hands-on involvement or a student whose anxiety around traditional schooling is preventing them from reaching their full potential, the flexibility and caring staff at William Finch Charter can help students and families achieve their goals. They have a long tradition of pioneering personalized learning options and serving students from all over Glenn County and beyond.

The school is under the Glenn County Office of Education and offers ongoing enrollment throughout the year and, at its current capacity of 25 students per teacher, has room for approximately 170 students. Must Attend: Oroville Salmon Festival One of Butte County’s signature fall traditions returns on Saturday, September 26, 2026, with the Oroville Salmon Festival, a free, family-friendly celebration honoring the annual return of Chinook salmon to the Feather River.

The festival stretches throughout Historic Downtown Oroville and the Feather River Fish Hatchery, giving families a unique opportunity to experience one of Northern California’s most remarkable natural events. Cool Kid Clark Roberson Whether he’s racing down the soccer field, swinging a baseball bat, or making waves behind a boat, 9-year-old Clark Roberson is always up for a challenge. A soon-to-be fourth grader at Sierra View Elementary, Clark is the kind of kid who brings energy, determination, and a positive attitude wherever he goes.

For Clark, soccer is more than just a sport, and the excitement of hitting the back of the net is what he loves the most. Needless to say, playing striker is his favorite. If he could have any superpower during a match, there’s no question what he would choose: super speed. With a little extra speed, Clark says he could score “lots of goals!”

His friends would describe him as caring and athletic—qualities that make him the kind of teammate everyone wants on their team. Clark believes a great teammate is someone who shows good sportsmanship, encourages others, and remembers that being part of a team is about more than just the final score.

When he’s not on the soccer field, Clark stays busy playing baseball, flag football, and wakesurfing. He is most proud of the hard work he put in during last soccer 18

Clark also enjoys school. His favorite subjects are P.E. and English because he loves to read. His favorite teacher, Mrs. Dupzyk, made a lasting impression during third grade because, according to Clark, “She is so nice.”

One thing that makes Clark stand out is his determination. When something is challenging, he doesn’t give up; he keeps practicing until he gets it right. That same mindset and competitive spirit help him both in sports and in life.

When asked about his future, Clark has big dreams. Because his dad is a pilot, he would love the chance to fly a plane someday. But his biggest goal is becoming a professional soccer player and continuing to chase his passion for the game.

The best advice Clark has received from his parents is simple: be kind to others (especially his three siblings) and eat his vegetables. His advice to other kids: “Listen to your parents and never give up!”

Clark’s happiest place is his home, and he says the best part about being a kid is not going to work. His favorite song to get pumped up is “Ransom,” by Lil Tecca, and after a game, his favorite meal is a classic favorite: mac and cheese.

Clark Roberson is a young athlete with a bright future ahead. Catch him scoring goals for Butte United and chasing his goals both on and off the field!

The Elephant Farm The name The Elephant Farm Inc. was inspired by a simple but powerful moment from founder Laila Collins. As a young child, when she wasn’t quite ready to engage in conversation, she would say, “Tell them I’m at the elephant farm.” From there, she would sit back, observe, and join in only when she felt comfortable. It was her way of staying present while protecting her sense of safety and control. That phrase now reflects the very heart of the organization’s mission.

Finding Balance at Kinetics When Mandie Burson brought her twoyear-old daughter to Kinetics Academy of Dance & Gymnastics for lessons, she had no idea the visit would change the course of her own life. While waiting at the studio, she noticed a posting on the wall seeking a dance teacher.

With a lifetime of experience behind her, Mandie looked at it and thought, “I could do that!”

Dance, cheer, and gymnastics have been part of Mandie’s life from elementary school through adulthood.

She competed in gymnastics, cheered throughout high school and at The Ohio State University, taught for a national cheer company, and performed on a professional dance team for Major League Soccer. Her professional career also provided a strong business background, so joining the Kinetics teaching staff felt natural.

When the previous owner decided to sell in 2018, Mandie stepped forward again—this time to purchase the business. Since then, she has expanded Kinetics from a dance studio into a thriving academy offering dance, gymnastics, cheer, and aerial instruction. With the support of her husband and two children, she loves the work, the kids, the families, and the staff who make it all possible.

Gymnastics will move first, while dance is expected to follow in August next year. Once complete, every Kinetics program will be housed under one roof. The building will include two large dance studios, expanded gymnastics space, plenty of bathrooms, dedicated birthday party rooms, places for students to keep their belongings, a staff room, a pro shop, and a bright, modern lobby where parents can comfortably wait. Although the move marks a major transition, Mandie says it has been carefully planned to create a better experience for students, families, and staff.

That family-focused experience is what makes Kinetics special. Its instructors care deeply about the children they teach and the families who walk through the doors. The academy emphasizes a welcoming, dramafree culture where students can learn without unnecessary pressure.

Families can choose anything from one recreational class each week to a five-day competitive schedule.

Many students balance Kinetics with school sports and other activities, allowing each child to find the level of commitment that works best. Multipleclass discounts also make it easier to combine options such as dance and gymnastics, as well as other offerings.

Now celebrating its 25th year, Kinetics has grown alongside generations of Chico-area children while remaining rooted in community and connection.

Kinetics serves nearly 800 students, with 25 staff members and more than 100 classes offered on average each week. Its current 6,000-square-foot location has grown into two connected units, but continued growth made it clear the academy needed more room.

Throughout the year, Kinetics offers camps, parties, special events, performances, and memorable opportunities, including participation in a Disney parade and auditions for Sacramento Ballet summer programs.

Kinetics also collaborates to bring The Nutcracker to the Oroville State Theatre.

After searching for over a year, Mandie found a centrally located space with its own parking lot, abundant free street parking, and plenty of room for Kinetics’ next chapter. The new facility, located in the former Lulu’s space with the LOVE mural, will eventually span approximately 13,000 square feet.

Beyond technique, Mandie sees movement as an outlet for stress and a path toward exercise, confidence, coordination, and discipline. Teacher Feature: Dakota Stahl-Smith If you follow the laughter through the halls of Paradise Elementary, there’s a good chance it will lead you straight to Dakota Stahl-Smith’s TK classroom. Inside, you may find children counting fuzzy spiders, writing letters in shaving cream, building with play dough, and discovering that learning doesn’t always happen while sitting quietly at a desk. “I want students to love coming to school,” Dakota says. “I want them to know they’re supported, loved, and that someone is cheering them on every single day.”

Dakota credits two educators with helping shape the teacher she is today: her eighthgrade teacher, Mr. Vixie, and her high school teacher and coach, Mr. Gadsen. They challenged her, made learning exciting, and saw her as more than just a student. She hopes to offer that same encouragement to everyone who enters her classroom.

One of the most meaningful chapters of her career came this past year when her son was one of her TK students. Experiencing his first year of school through the eyes of both a mother and a teacher became one of the greatest gifts of her career.

Outside the classroom, Dakota enjoys traveling, coaching youth soccer, watching football, and spending time with her husband and their two young boys. She hopes that her students, years from now, remember a classroom where they felt celebrated, where mistakes were part of learning, and where someone believed in them completely. Because long after worksheets and spelling lists are forgotten, children remember the people who made them feel seen, and that’s the lesson that matters most.

Teaching wasn’t always the plan. “As a kid, I thought I was going to be a police officer,” Dakota says. “It wasn’t until I worked at a summer school after graduation that I realized teaching was exactly where I was meant to be.” That led her to become a firstgeneration college graduate. She earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies from Azusa Pacific and a master’s degree in education at Grand Canyon University.

“I think children need teachers who are adaptable,” Dakota says. “Sometimes that means changing a lesson plan for more hands-on learning. Other times, it means setting academics aside for a class meeting or spending lunch with a student who simply needs someone to listen. Those moments are every bit as important as report cards.”

She is equally passionate about partnering with families, believing children thrive when parents and teachers work together as a team.

Beginning her fifth year in education, Dakota has taught mild-to-moderate special education, kindergarten, first grade, third grade, and now TK. Regardless of the grade, her goal has remained to create a classroom where children feel safe enough to take risks, excited enough to ask questions, and valued for exactly who they are.

Her students would say she is energetic and that learning is often an adventure. Some favorite traditions include the ABC Fashion Show, Polar Express Day, Grinch Day, and family events like Muffins with Mom and Donuts with Dad.
