SUMMER PROGRAMS GUIDE

Dear Parents, During the summer, we are pleased to offer students from the community the same tailored, high quality Groves Academy education that we provide to our full-time students during the school year.

Our summer programs employ the same philosophy of remediating academic weaknesses and developing strengths and talents by using our specialized curriculum and teaching techniques, while maintaining small class sizes.

For students entering grades 2-8, the morning program is academic— reading, writing, and math; the afternoon program offers fun enrichment activities designed to tap into talents, creativity, and interests. Children can participate in either the morning or the afternoon program—or both.

For students entering grades 9-12, academic programs are offered in study skills, math, and writing. This year we’ve also added an enrichment program in woodworking.

It amazes us how much children love to attend our summer programs and we eagerly look forward to working with them. They realize right away that we approach education differently and that there are other children who learn like they do. When that happens, they feel understood, perhaps for the first time.

ABOUT US AND OUR SUMMER PROGRAMS Groves Academy is often referred to as the hidden gem of education in the Twin Cities because we have great success helping bright, capable students who have learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders reach their full academic, social, emotional, and creative potential.

We owe our success to our remarkably talented teachers and the premium we place on their professional development so that they can bring best practices in reading, writing, and math instruction to the classroom. Students are taught in a structured, supportive, and nurturing environment. Our goal is not only to remediate academic weaknesses, but also to create an environment which will help develop creative abilities, leadership potential, and athletic talents.

Many, if not most, students come to us with low self-confidence, feeling that despite how hard they try in school, they cannot be successful. By providing this structured environment and explicit, sequential instruction at the appropriate level, our students learn—often in a few short days—that effort does lead to success. When this happens, motivation returns and confidence levels begin to reach new heights.

It truly is a sight to behold.

Groves Academy was founded in 1972 and today serves hundreds of children, families, and educators each year throughout Minnesota and the Upper Midwest. Our three-part service offering includes our school for grades 1-12; the Learning Center at Groves Academy, which provides diagnostic assessments, tutoring, speech, and other services for children and adults in the community; and our education development programs, which provide professional development workshops for teachers and other professionals.

PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 2-8 Groves Academy offers both academic and enrichment programs for students entering grades 2-8 during a four-week session from Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 15. There is no school on Monday, July 4.

Academic classes are held in the morning and enrichment classes are held in the afternoon. Families may choose to apply for full days or just the mornings or afternoons.

We offer optional before-school care from 7:30-9:00am and after-school care from 3:30-5:00pm. These programs provide supervised games and activities and are designed to simplify families’ busy summer schedules.

MORNING ACADEMIC PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 2-8 Students in the morning program are grouped according to age and reading/spelling, writing, and math abilities.

Classes are taught by Groves Academy teachers. Most classes have six students; some classes in grades 6-8 may have up to eight. Multiple sections of each level may run simultaneously, and some students may have different teachers for different subjects.

Teachers will provide weekly class updates via email, as well as an overview of student progress at the end of the second week. Final progress reports, including individual comments and recommendations, will be mailed following the conclusion of the program. There are no parent conferences during summer programs.

TIMES

Groves Academy is ideally suited for students who have a learning disability, such as dyslexia, and/or an attention disorder, such as ADHD, that affects academic achievement. We help students close the gap between their academic potential and achievement.

Groves Academy’s education options are not designed for disruptive or oppositional students, for students with emotional issues unrelated to a learning disability, for students with a diagnosis of autism, or for students with developmental/cognitive delays.

READING AND SPELLING

Teachers use the Wilson Reading System® to improve student reading and spelling abilities. With an emphasis on direct, sequential, multi-sensory instruction, Wilson teachers use a diagnostic-prescriptive approach and tailor instruction to the issues and successes of each student. Based on the tenets of Orton-Gillingham instruction, Wilson is a research-based approach to help all students become better readers and spellers.

Fluency is addressed through oral reading of controlled text. Comprehension focuses on main idea, supporting details, plot sequence, summarization, vocabulary development, and the introduction of inferential thinking.

READING AND SPELLING I

Students entering the advanced reading class are reading at, or close to, grade level. They have demonstrated a solid grasp of symbol-sound relationships and because they are good readers, they have an intuitive understanding of syllable types and syllable division rules. Word analysis involving both reading and spelling focuses on a morphological study of words (understanding root words, prefixes, and suffixes). Fluency is addressed through oral reading of selected pieces of literature. Students also review the three great spelling rules (see Reading and Spelling II) and more advanced symbol-sound correspondences.

Comprehension is an emphasis of the class and focuses on understanding main idea, supporting details, character motivation, author intent and writing style, as well as inferential and critical thinking skills. Vocabulary development is emphasized through various activities.

Students focus on basic decoding, encoding (spelling), reading fluency, and comprehension skills. An emphasis is placed on using multi-sensory techniques to teach symbol-sound relationships, syllable types, and word attack skills in isolation and in the fluent reading of controlled, connected text. Spelling lessons reinforce the symbol-sound patterns taught during the reading lessons. Comprehension work focuses on main idea, identifying important details, and plot sequence at the appropriate reading level.

In a multi-sensory context, students review advanced symbol-sound relationships and syllable types. More advanced word attack skills are taught to aid the student in decoding multi-syllabic words. Spelling work reinforces

Teachers use direct instruction to teach sentence and paragraph structure, which includes significant practice with teacher feedback. Instruction focuses on solidifying skills in a direct and sequential manner.

Students learn to build and expand simple sentences before they learn paragraph organization and essay writing. The goal is to build a strong foundation upon which more sophisticated written language skills can be developed.

WRITING I

Using multi-sensory techniques, students are introduced to sentence formation including capitalization and punctuation, writing complete sentences and expanding sentences. Sentence strategies are introduced and reviewed. All students have access to a computer.

WRITING II

Using multi-sensory techniques, students receive direct instruction in writing expanded and compound sentences. Students are also introduced to paragraph writing including topic sentences, supporting details, and clinchers (concluding sentences). A focus is on the mechanics of writing (spelling, capitalization, and punctuation) as well as word usage and idea organization. Strategies are introduced and reviewed at both the advanced sentence and paragraph levels.

All students have access to a computer.

WRITING III

Students receive direct instruction in writing expanded and complex sentences, as well as simple paragraphs including topic sentences, supporting details, and clinchers (concluding sentences).

A focus is on the mechanics of writing (spelling, capitalization, and punctuation), as well as word usage and idea organization. Students are also introduced to different paragraph types and practice writing various paragraph types. If time allows, students are introduced to the five paragraph essay. All students have access to a computer.

MATH

Math can be difficult for students who have learning differences because there are two distinct aspects, computation and conceptualization, involved in mathematical processing. Computation is problematic for students with ADHD or dysgraphia because they have difficulty with the details and sequencing of math problems. Students with conceptual math difficulties often have trouble with the language of mathematics.

The Groves approach to math helps students with both types of issues by providing direct, sequential, and multi-sensory instruction. Students learn both the concepts and the processes of mathematical operations. All classes work with applying mathematical principles in problem solving and critical thinking skills involving word problems.

MATH I

Topics range from the introduction of basic skills involving place value and one-digit addition and subtraction to more advanced double- and triple-digit addition and subtraction involving regrouping. Simple multiplication and division concepts are covered.

Depending on class level and need, concepts of time and money are introduced and reviewed.

MATH II

There are a wide range of topics in Math II. When necessary, review of basic addition and subtraction problems involving borrowing are reviewed as well as simple multiplication and division. Some classes spend significant time with double- and triple-digit multiplication, while others review these concepts and are introduced to and review operations involving fractions, decimals and percents.

MATH III

Some Math III classes spend significant time reviewing operations involving fractions, decimals, and percents.

Other classes focus on pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and even algebra II concepts depending upon class groupings and need.

AFTERNOON ENRICHMENT FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 2-8 The afternoon enrichment program provides meaningful, structured, and fun activities.

Classes are offered from 12:30-1:30pm and 1:30-3:30pm in either 2-week or 4-week blocks.

Students may sign up for one or several classes, which maintain a student to teacher ratio of 8:1.

Progress reports are not provided for afternoon enrichment classes.

12:30-1:30PM ENRICHMENT CLASSES KEYBOARDING

An essential skill for school success, this class will provide a personalized approach to learning the keyboard. Students will use a multi-sensory program that is dynamic, stimulating, and sequential. Great for new typists and those who wish to improve basic skills.

ENERGY BLAST

Get active and have a blast! Utilize strategy, teamwork, and engage in friendly competition through experiencing a variety of games, sports, and activities. Modifications will be made when necessary to ensure successful participation in a safe and inclusive environment.

SUMMER SWEETS AND TREATS

Beat the summer heat by preparing “cool� snacks and treats! Learn to make watermelon smoothies, icy pudding pops, fresh squeezed lemonade, and other refreshing treats. This hands-on class will be sure to please!

GUITAR AND UKULELE WORKSHOP

Become the musician you have always wanted to be and take your musical talents to the next level! Learn the basics of guitar or ukulele through sequential instruction, hands-on exercises, and audio and video recordings.

This class will be tailored to meet the needs of all students and skill levels.

COMMUNICATION LAB

Come and explore many exciting art mediums and discover your creativity. Explore oil pastels, drawing, paint, printmaking, and creative projects using recycled materials. Projects and activities will be based on skill and interest level.

Listening, turn-taking, and verbal expression are just a few of the many communication skills necessary for academic and social success. This class will help students develop and strengthen their use of receptive and expressive language. Skills will be taught using direct instruction, modeling, role-plays, and interpersonal interactions while engaging in a variety of activities, projects, and games.

CRAFTS, CARDS, AND CREATIONS

Welcome to the wonderful world of jewelry and card design! Design and create cards, necklaces, key chains, bracelets, and more using stamps and craft items.

Activities will vary and will be tailored to meet the needs and interests of the group.

Weeks 3-4, July 5-July 15, 2nd-8th grades, $180

Students who attend the morning program and continue in the afternoon will have a lunch period from 12:00-12:30pm. Students must bring their own lunch.

Please note that in order for morning students to register for a 1:30-3:30pm class, they must also register for a 12:30-1:30pm class.

1:30-3:30PM ENRICHMENT CLASSES ADVENTURE CLUB

This activity-based program is designed to facilitate the development and maintenance of positive social relationships. Instructors will transport students off-site to participate in a variety of activities, including swimming, bowling, trampoline jumping, roller skating, and more. This class will provide a secure and nurturing environment where students are free to build friendships and have fun.

PERCUSSION PIZZAZZ!

Experience the wide world of percussion music! Improvise, compose, play, and learn using numerous conventional and unconventional instruments in the percussion family.

From trash cans to djembes and everything in between, we’ll bring music alive through teamwork!

TASTY SUMMER SENSATIONS

Learn about the fresh flavors of the season by preparing summertime favorites. Recipe selections will include taco salads in tortilla shells, scrumptious shortcakes with whipped cream and berries, garden pizzas, and other delicious creations. Students will surely enjoy the fruits of their labor!

PAINTS, PASTELS, AND PRINTS

Discover your creativity as we explore the world of pastels, oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Develop compositions and create works in a full array of color.

Techniques and strategies will be implemented to help build confidence and achieve artistic perfection.

CLAY NATION

Create sculptures with your hands, make functional pots on the potter’s wheel, and explore the art of glazing and surface design. This class is for students with no previous experience as well as for those seeking further development in hand-building, throwing, and glazing skills.

STEMpede

Come one come all, to a class that is only limited by your imagination. Learn about science and technology in a fun, experimental environment. Design, build, and discover the wide world of STEM education, all while learning important lessons that will come in handy throughout life.

NATURE EXPLORERS

Explore nature through hands-on, fun-filled experiences.

Visit the local nature center and learn about insects, animals, and the outdoors. Other activities will include germinating seeds and producing flower chart booklets.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 9–12 Our high school program is designed to provide students with a small, structured environment, where they can receive the extra support they need to learn or maintain skills across various content areas. Classes have a maximum of 10 students and are taught by Groves Academy teachers. Students may apply for any number of classes. Each section lasts two weeks.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS | JULY 25-AUG 5: MATH WORKSHOP

This class will take an interactive approach to learning or refining mathematical concepts. Concepts encompassing pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry will be covered depending on the needs of the student.

Specific topics may include order of operations, fractions, decimals, proportions, integers, graphing equations, and word problems. Students will learn and practice through direct, multi-sensory instruction at their own level and pace, all while receiving the support and tools they need to be successful.

STUDY SKILLS AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

This interactive class orients students to vital elements of learning. Students will complete a learning assessment not only to determine their specific needs and strengths, but also to help them better understand how to maximize their learning. Students will use both low and high technological tools to practice methods of note-taking, learn strategies to enhance comprehension through active reading and summary writing, and explore various approaches for organizing materials and managing time. Students will also have the opportunity to both learn and use assistive technology to support reading and writing.

WRITING STRATEGIES

Through direct, sequential instruction, this class will provide students with the foundational skills of expository writing across various content areas.

Students will learn strategies for writing sentences, paragraphs, and compositions. In addition, instruction will focus on specialized techniques to help students organize their thoughts and translate those thoughts into clear communication.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM JUNE 20-JULY 1 AND JULY 5-JULY 15: WOODWORKING BASICS

Learn invaluable woodworking skills through completing a series of take-home projects. With teacher guidance and close supervision, we will go through all aspects of the design and build process to produce high quality cutting boards and Adirondack chairs. A major emphasis will be placed on shop safety, as well as proper hand and power tool usage.

This class will provide participants with the scaffolding they need to improve planning, organizational, and time management skills. All necessary materials are included, and the class is appropriate for varying levels of experience. Participants can sign up for one or both sessions.

Every applicant is required to submit: • Completed and signed application form • Diagnostic assessment • Teacher feedback form

To help us accurately assess the needs of each student, we require all applicants to submit their most recent diagnostic assessment and a copy of their most recent Individual Education Plan (IEP), if applicable.

The assessment we need is the type administered individually by the school as part of the IEP process, or privately at a clinic. It may be called a psychoeducational assessment and should include a narrative report as well as ability and achievement scores.

While scores from group-administered school tests (MCA, NWEA) may be helpful, they are not sufficient for admission to our Summer Programs.

If you are interested in having your child tested, please let us know. We can refer you to an outside testing facility or provide you with information about assessments offered by The Learning Center at Groves Academy.

We will review your application materials to determine whether our academic programs will be a good match and benefit your child. Confirmation of acceptance will be possible when we have students of similar ages and abilities who can be grouped together to make a class.

We will confirm acceptance and program fees as soon as possible, but no later than May 13. All program fees will be due on May 20, which is also the final day we will accept applications, if space is available. We would appreciate prompt notification if your child will not attend, as other families may be affected by your decision.

Final schedules, teachers’ names, and room numbers will be mailed by June 9.

FEES AND DISCOUNTS

A non-refundable application fee of $40 is due with application materials. This fee is not applied to program fees.

We encourage you to apply by April 15 and offer a $100 discount on our academic program for grades 2-8 if you do so. Applying early helps us confirm classes and students in a timely manner.

A full-day discount is available.

• Grades 2-8: $75 discount for every two weeks of full day enrollment (9:00-3:30) • Grades 9-12: $100 discount when enrolled in all three academic programs If program fees are not received by the May 20 deadline, your child’s spot is not guaranteed.

After the deadline, we may begin to assign students from the waiting list in order to fill a section.

ABOUT GROVES ACADEMY Since 1972, Groves Academy has provided exemplary educational programs and services for individuals with learning disabilities and attention disorders, their families, and educators.

OUR SCHOOL

Groves Academy is Minnesota’s only established school for students with learning disabilities and attention disorders and is accredited through ISACS (Independent Schools Association of the Central States). We enroll 250 students in grades 1-12, with an average class size of eight. We believe students learn best when instruction is direct, sequential, multi-sensory, and addresses individual strengths and challenges. Our teachers and research-based practices help students reach their full academic, social, emotional and creative potential.

THE LEARNING CENTER AT GROVES ACADEMY®

The Learning Center allows children not enrolled in our school access to the transformative education we provide.

The Learning Center at Groves Academy offers centralized services to children and adults, including comprehensive diagnostic testing, tutoring, speech and language therapy, assistive technology training and career counseling. All services are adapted to the unique needs of each individual and designed to strengthen confidence and sense of purpose.

Additionally, community events are scheduled throughout the year including a college fair and parent workshops on topics related to learning disabilities and attention disorders.
