FOOTBALL 2015

PRESIDENT PAUL MCNULTY From 2001 to 2005, President McNulty served as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The U.S. Senate confirmed him for this position three days after the September 11 terrorist attacks and his office handled numerous terrorist prosecutions. Earlier in his career, from 1990 to 1993, he served as the Justice Department’s Chief Spokesman and Director of Legal Policy.

A 1980 graduate of Grove City College, the Honorable Paul J. McNulty, J.D., enters his second year as the College’s ninth President. President McNulty returned to Grove City after serving as a partner in the global law firm Baker & McKenzie, where he chaired the firm’s corporate compliance and investigations practice. He is widely recognized as a leading voice on business ethics and global anti-corruption matters.

His career also includes 11 years as a senior lawyer on Capitol Hill, where he served as the Chief Counsel and Director of Legislative Operations for the Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives and Chief Counsel for the House Subcommittee on Crime. He began his legal career in 1983 as Counsel for the House Ethics Committee. President McNulty received the College’s Alumni Achievement award in 1998. The College awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2007. He also received an honorary doctorate in 2003 from Capital University School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 1983.

He joined Baker & McKenzie in 2007 after more than two decades of public service, primarily as a leader in United States law enforcement efforts.

He is the fourth alumnus to serve as President of the College, where he studied history and met his wife Brenda (Millican ‘80). The McNultys have three daughters, Katy (McNulty ‘07) Hittinger, Anni (McNulty) Blankenship and Corrie ‘14. Their son Joseph died of cancer in 2012 at the age of 26 while attending law school.

Now in his 12th year at Grove City College, Todd Gibson serves as the College’s interim athletic director.

In July 2010, Gibson joined the Department of Exercise Science and Athletics as a full-time assistant professor. He spent the 2009 and 2010 seasons as an assistant track and field coach at the College. Gibson spent 11 years as an assistant football coach at Grove City, working primarily as the outside linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coordinator.

INTERIM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TODD GIBSON During the 2014-15 academic year, Gibson worked as Grove City’s assistant athletic director. In that role, he handled a variety of administrative roles, including game management, budgetary matters and transportation scheduling.

As a student-athlete at Grove City, he started for two seasons at split end in football from 1998 to 2001 and led the team in receiving as a senior. He helped the Wolverines to the conference title in 1998. Gibson graduated from Grove City with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He also owns a bachelor’s degree in integrated social studies/secondary education from Youngstown State University. In 2006, he completed his master’s degree in exercise science from California (Pa.) University.

Gibson completed his fifth season as Grove City’s head men’s and women’s track and field coach last spring, guiding both programs to their second straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships.

Gibson also owns a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist credential through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a Performance Enhancement Specialist credential through the National Association of Sports Medicine. Gibson resides in Mars, Pa., with his wife Richelle and their daughter Madeline.

Last winter, Gibson directed the women’s track and field team to the inaugural Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship in indoor track and field. He has earned five conference Coach of the Year awards since taking over as head coach.

COLLEGE ADMINISTRATION

From 2005 to 2007, President McNulty served as U.S. Deputy Attorney General, the second highest-ranking official in the Justice Department and the chief operating officer of over 100,000 Department employees. In that role, he led an attack on corporate fraud, successfully argued a police conduct case before the U.S. Supreme Court, and organized the U.S. rule of law efforts in Iraq.

SEASON PREVIEW

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

2015 PREVIEW A renewed sense of optimism is evident within the Grove City College football program as the Wolverines prepare for the 2015 season. Injuries and inexperience hampered the Wolverines last season but the lessons learned in 2014 have helped build a strong foundation for this fall and beyond. Head coach Chris Smith welcomes back 41 returning lettermen, including 18 returning starters. Nine of those starters return to a defensive unit that featured as many as five freshmen starters last season. A pair of veterans will anchor the defense at inside linebacker as seniors Brandon Berringer and Bobby Tuttle respectively return for their final season. Berringer led Grove City with 89 tackles in 2014 while also forcing four fumbles. Tuttle, the team’s leading tackler as a sophomore, returns for his third season as the defensive signal-caller. He recorded 76 stops in 10 games last year and has been selected as a team co-captain this year. At outside linebacker, senior Joey Siefert will look to take over as the full-time starter after playing in all 10 games last year. Siefert recorded 13 tackles and an interception while seeing extensive duty. Senior Tyler Campbell started two games in 2014 and will also compete for a starting spot this season. Junior Dan Dorman is a two-year letterman who will challenge Berringer and Tuttle at inside linebacker. Sophomore Josh McElrone made one start as a rookie and will also be in the mix on the inside, along with junior letterman Jon Horton.

Sophomore Kyle Beyer started all 10 games at free safety in 2014. He is one of four returning starters in the Grove City secondary.

Junior letterman Jeff Croll and sophomore Jacob Armbrecht are also likely competitors for a starting spot on the outside. Grove City’s defensive backfield features several veterans with starting experience. Junior cornerback Jimmy Cianciola is a two-year starter while sophomore cornerback Jake Seibert started all 10 games as a freshman. Seibert recorded 57 tackles and a team-high eight pass breakups. Junior cornerback Miles Milner moved into the starting lineup as a freshman in 2013 and looks to rebound from an injury-filled 2014 season. Classmate Matt Seifert will also compete for time at cornerback. At safety, the Wolverines return three players with starting experience. Sophomore Kyle Beyer started all 10 games at free safety last year and finished with 57 tackles. Junior Ned Hull, a two-year letterman, and sophomore Andrew Seifert shared starting duties at strong safety last year and are both expected to be integral parts of the defensive backfield again in 2015. Andrew Seifert started the final seven games and totaled 36 tackles. Three starters return on the defensive line for Grove City, including a pair of seniors. Defensive end Ryan Hickey is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and enters his third season as a starter up front.

Senior Brandon Berringer (55) is a returning starter at inside linebacker while senior Ryan Hickey (57) is back as a starting defensive end for Grove City.

FOOTBALL 2015

2015 PREVIEW Hickey ranked second on the team with 11.5 tackles for loss in 2014. Like Hickey, senior nose tackle Brent Veerman has started each of the last two seasons on the defensive line. Veerman made 31 tackles in 2014 while again anchoring the front four. At the other end spot, sophomore Eric Kinderman is back after emerging during his freshman season. Kinderman started eight games in 2014 and posted a pair of quarterback sacks. Senior tackle Ben McKnight earned his first letter last year and will compete for a vacant spot on the interior, along with senior Zach Bailey and sophomores Jack Konopa and Connor Lowe.

Senior Gabriel Moore will be an integral part of Grove City’s passing game and return game in 2015. Moore is a three-year letterman.

5

SEASON PREVIEW

The Grove City offense will also be well-stocked with veterans for the 2015 season under the direction of new offensive coordinator Andrew DiDonato. The Wolverines have transitioned into a no-huddle spread scheme that will emphasize balance. Three starters return on the offensive line, including both guards. Senior Alex Jewell enters his fourth year as the starter at right guard while junior Mitch Zajicek is back at left guard. Zajicek, who has also played tackle at Grove City, is a two-year letterman. Senior tackle Jake Jaszcar returns as the incumbent right tackle. At center, sophomore Daniel Sedjo has the inside track to earn the starting spot while fellow sophomores John Morris and Thomas Price are looking to compete for time on the interior. Grove City will look to feature the tight end position more in the revamped offense and several men will be in competition. Seniors Donny Haney and P.J. Wycech are returning veterans at tight end while senior Steve Maskrey moved from fullback to tight end, as did sophomore Joe Swanson. The Wolverines also feature plenty of depth, experience and versatility at wide receiver. Senior David Folkmire hauled in 51 passes last year while 6-foot-3 senior Josh Peach snagged 33 receptions after moving from quarterback at midseason. Peach is the team’s other co-captain with Tuttle. Junior Luke Brancato led the Wolverines with a 15.8 yards-per-catch average in 2014 while senior Zach Rader and junior Zach Gazdacko have both moved to wide receiver after playing halfback in previous seasons. Senior Gabriel Moore will also play wide receiver fulltime after playing a variety of positions during his first three seasons. Junior lettermen Brett Pinson and Caleb Jakiel are also back in the fold at wide receiver. Sophomores Andrew Schauer and Marcus Ubinger are two of the leading candidates to start at running back after each lettering last year. Grove City expects a wide-open quarterback battle in preseason camp as several holdovers and newcomers will battle. Junior Aaron Lundmark started three games last year and led the team in passing yards while sophomore Gabe Greco made four starts in the second half of 2014. Sophomore Tyler Kepple played extensively in the second half of the season and led the team in completion percentage. Senior quarterback Drew Chorey returns after missing the 2014 season. Junior Anthony Marnejon returns for his third season as the Wolverines’ punter. Senior Nick Piett is back as the long snapper while Price snapped for extra points and field goals last year. Chorey or Kepple will likely hold for whomever emerges as the Wolverines’ placekicker. Moore will likely handle kickoff returns again in 2015. Folkmire and Pinson are the favorites to return punts.

FOOTBALL 2015

HEAD COACH CHRIS SMITH For his efforts that season, the American Football Coaches Association, the Metropolitan New York Writers Association and the PAC all honored Smith as their Coach of the Year. In 1995, Smith earned the Tri-State Officials Association’s Coach of the Year award. Overall, Smith has coached seven players who have attained All-American status as well as countless others who have earned ECAC and PAC recognition through the years. The Wolverines’ on-field success has been matched by success in the classroom. Over the past two decades, numerous Grove City players have received recognition both regionally and nationally for their academic performances. Grove City’s four CoSIDA Academic All-District selections in 2005 set a new program record. Grove City again matched that standard in 2006. In 2008, linebacker Adam Eichler and guard Dave Salera both earned CoSIDA Academic All-America honors following the season. Eichler, Salera and wide receiver Stephen Mercer all earned Academic All-District recognition in 2008. Defensive back Chris Gibbs became the first Grove City junior to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American following the 2012 season. In 2013, Gibbs became the program’s first-ever two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. Gibbs, Joe Diani, Ryan Hickey, Sam Ivan and Ritchie all earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition in 2013, setting a new single-season program record with five All-District selections. Hickey and Brandon Berringer both earned Academic All-District last fall. A highly-respected member of the coaching community, Smith is actively involved on the American Football Coaches Association Division III Football Council. He is also a past member of the NCAA Division III Football Committee, which supervises the NCAA Division III playoffs. Smith ascended to the head coaching position at Grove City in 1984 after spending five years as an assistant at the College. Prior to joining the Grove City football staff in 1979, Smith coached the outside linebackers at Western Kentucky University. Smith’s coaching career began at Perry High School in his hometown of Massillon, Ohio. From 1996 to 2003, Smith also held the role of Director of Athletics at Grove City. Grove City teams won 59 total Presidents’ Athletic Conference titles during that span, including titles in 17 different sports. As a player, Smith started at safety for the Wolverines from 1968-71. He led the team in interceptions three times and holds Grove City’s career record for interceptions with 22. Over his 40 years as a player, assistant coach and head coach at Grove City, Smith has been involved in 380 games. Smith graduated from Grove City in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He then completed his master’s degree at Western Kentucky. He and his wife, Barbara, live in Grove City. Their daughter Ellie is a 2003 Grove City College graduate.

HEAD COACH CHRIS SMITH

Chris Smith enters his 32nd season as Grove City College’s head football coach. A 1972 Grove City College graduate, Smith is the dean of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference football coaches. He is also the alltime wins leader in the 119-year history of Grove City football. In 2012, Smith guided the Wolverines to a 6-4 overall mark and a 5-3 record in the rugged Presidents’ Athletic Conference. The 2012 Wolverines led the conference in total defense and senior tailback Shane Kaclik became the third 1,000-yard rusher in program history. Grove City also led the nation in fewest penalty yards per game in 2012. The Wolverines ranked third nationally in that category in 2011. Overall, Grove City has been the least-penalized team in the conference seven times in the last 10 seasons, including the 2013 season. Numerous Grove City players have earned national and regional acclaim during his tenure. In 2005, safety Aaron Margo earned First Team All-America from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and represented the U.S. in the Aztec Bowl. In 2007, center Matt Gregg became Grove City’s third Aztec Bowl participant this decade. In 2010, tackle Pete Polesnak represented the United States in the Bowl of the Stars, the Aztec Bowl’s successor, while nose tackle Jarred Frawley participated in the 2011 Bowl of the Stars. Kaclik, linebacker Jason Ferguson and guard Josh Bermann all represented the United States in the 2012 Bowl of the Stars. Former Wolverine standouts Ben Manwaring, Ethan Martin and Anthony Ritchie all played in the 2013 Bowl of the Stars. Last year, linebacker Jason Skyrm represented Grove City and the United States in the 2014 Bowl of the Stars. Under Smith’s direction, the Wolverine program ascended into the national picture with consecutive PAC championships in 1997 and 1998. Grove City also recorded runner-up finishes in both 1999 and 2000. During that time, Smith guided an offensive juggernaut that featured record-setting fullback R.J. Bowers, who became the first college running back to eclipse the 7,000-yard mark for his career. In 1997, Smith led the Wolverines to their first-ever PAC championship and first nine-win season in program history. Grove City capped the season by hosting the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the ECAC Southwest Bowl.

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT

THE

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), built on the basic belief that an athletic program is an integral part of college life, but not an entity in itself, looks back on sixty years of growth and ahead to years of continued academic and athletic excellence. Formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, the PAC was the result of a realization that college athletics, despite numerous virtues for the individual and the institution, were gradually becoming a financial and academic burden. If athletics were to be continued, action had to be taken to place the program on its proper level. This included the premise that benefits of participation should be provided to as many students as possible. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics, with academics at the center of each member’s philosophy. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council added Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards allconference honors in its 21 championship sports.

PAC

Head coaches determine all-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, all-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC, which recently celebrated its 60th anniversary, annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Grove City women and Waynesburg captured the 2014-15 Trophies. Last year, the conference named 935 of its studentathletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above.

ABOUT GROVE CITY COLLEGE

ABOUT

The beautifully landscaped campus of Grove City College stretches over 150 acres and includes 28 neo-Gothic buildings. It is considered one of the loveliest in the nation. While the College has changed to meet the needs of the society it serves, its basic philosophy has remained unchanged since its founding in 1876. It is a Christian, liberal arts institution, dedicated to the principle of providing the highest quality education at the lowest possible cost. Wishing to remain truly independent and to retain its distinctive qualities as a private school governed by private citizens (trustees), it is one of few colleges in the country that does not accept federal funds. Affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but not narrowly denominational, the College believes that to be well-educated a student should be exposed to the central ideas of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Grove City College offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, sciences, engineering, business, and music and is distinguished as a national leader in education. Grove City’s programs in electrical and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission Board of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The “big business school curriculum” prepares students for today’s global business reality. An extensive variety of internship opportunities are provided across the curriculum. Grove City College wants its students to be prepared in this age of mobile information technology. Each entering freshman receives a tablet computer which is his or hers to keep upon graduation with a four-year degree. This is part of the Information Technology Initiative, a total program integrating technology across the curriculum.

PROGRAMS AND MAJORS

Grove City College’s Breen Student Union

The College believes that its student body has a unique mix of talents and abilities. Its Career Services program helps students identify those key assets during the first year and then builds a four-year strategy to help them pursue a satisfying career. Personal counseling, professional speakers, databases, alumni contacts, summer internships, corporate visits, employer presentations and more are incorporated into the career preparation experience. Grove City follows the semester calendar plan, in addition to offering two-week sessions in January and May. Most of the 2,500 students live in separate men’s and women’s dormitories. The rest are local commuters or married students. A full program of cultural, professional, athletic and social activities is offered, including 19 intercollegiate varsity athletic teams. Grove City, a town of 8,100 people, is located 60 miles north of Pittsburgh. It is located near Interstates 79 and 80 and has a municipal airport.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

All 19 of Grove City College’s intercollegiate varsity athletic teams utilize the College’s superior facilities for competition, practices and off-season training and conditioning. Grove City’s athletic facilities have undergone numerous renovations and improvements in recent years, with more upgrades scheduled in the immediate future. On lower campus, Robert E. Thorn Field is home to the College’s football and track and field teams. The College installed CSTurf at Robert E. Thorn Field. CSTurf is a synthetic playing surface that features polyethylene LSR grass fibers and a rubber infill system. The College also installed lights and resurfaced the 8-lane track around the field. Grove City also reconfigured its setup for track meets during these renovations. In 2011, the College installed a new stateof-the-art scoreboard and new bleachers on the visitors’ side at Thorn Field. These upgrades benefit the entire campus community as the complex is used by both the College’s club sports teams and its intramural program, along with the varsity teams. The track is also available for use by recreational walkers and joggers. The complex also features 10 all-weather tennis courts next to the stadium. Phillips Field House, located at the north end of the complex, features several locker rooms, an athletic training room, meeting rooms and coaches’ offices. It is used by the football, track and tennis programs throughout the academic year. The Physical Learning Center (PLC) houses the Grove City College Arena, home to the College’s basketball and volleyball programs. In summer 2012, the College renovated the Arena by installing new lighting and a new playing floor. In recent years, the Arena has also received new scoreboards and scorers’ tables.

The home of Grove City’s football and track and field teams, Robert E. Thorn Field has received numerous renovations in recent years.

The James E. Longnecker Pool is one of the nation’s premier small-college venues for both swimming and diving and water polo.

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

In addition, the PLC features the James E. Longnecker Pool, one of the premier aquatic facilities in the region. Each year, Grove City hosts the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the state-of-the-art facility. In 2012, the College also hosted the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division III Championships at the James E. Longnecker Pool. The PLC also features a second pool, the Recreational Pool, which is used by members of the College community year-round. A fitness room featuring aerobic and Cybex equipment and a separate weight room with free and mechanized weights are also keystone areas of the facility. The PLC also features six racquetball/handball courts as well as two adjacent intramural rooms. The intramural rooms feature four basketball courts, four indoor tennis courts, four volleyball courts, an indoor track and two indoor jumping pits. The College installed new synthetic flooring and several new electronic scoreboards throughout the intramural rooms. The Physical Learning Center houses the athletic training room, locker rooms and offices for coaches and physical education faculty. The College recently constructed a new office suite for coaches and athletic administration, while also incorporating its Athletic Hall of Fame and Heritage Hall areas. Grove City’s outdoor athletic facilities have also received numerous upgrades in recent years. The varsity soccer field, College Field, was expanded and re-sodded, along with the addition of a new press box. Meanwhile, Grove City’s baseball and softball facilities recently received major facelifts as new dugouts, new fencing and electronic scoreboards were installed on both fields.
