BRIAN STRUMWASSER IS ‘UNSTOPPABLE!’ One of the most critical elements of Broadway’s two-time Tonywinning musical, TOOTSIE, is its sharp quick changes. Hanging in the wings is Brian Strumwasser, TOOTSIE’s Makeup and Hair Supervisor, whose team transforms Santino Fontana into the fabulous Dorothy Michaels eight times a week. We spoke with Strumwasser, who gave us a taste of how his incredible quick changes operate. What is the most challenging aspect of working on this show? BS: The maintenance on this show is extremely hard because of so many wigs. The wigs get washed every four shows. So every four shows we’re re-rolling all eight of the wigs that were seen that night, and then the next day I come in to style the eight wigs for the show the next day. Has the process gotten any easier since opening? BS: Nope. I’m still putting in new wigs because I don’t even have all my understudy wigs. I’m still here between 70 and 90 hours a week. What’s your favorite part about your job? BS: The big quick changes. The big quick changes are actually sometimes easier than a smaller one because there’s more of us on [Fontana], and we all have a very specific job to do during those changes. So during a normal night, the

most people that are on one of the quick changes is six. When we did the Tony Awards…we had eight of us. How is it doing a quick change like that? BS: I have one person that’s on left hand nails; I have one person on right hand nails; I have one person behind him that is actually handing me the wig over his head. Then he has four other dressers. One dresser does his right shoe and bracelets, one dresser does the left shoe and earrings, and then another dresser does the necklace and helps hold the dress together in the back, while his main dresser, Lauren [Kowalski], is zipping him up and making sure everything’s tight and even in the front. Do you have Velcro or fasteners that pull apart really fast? BS: The shirt is Velcroed, the jeans are regular jeans, the jacket just came right off. Then he’s also already wearing his corset and his stockings and all the under gear for the show so that it helps just seamlessly put him into the costume. He doesn’t even wear socks with sneakers. Is there anything else you want to share about the show? BS: I run about four miles and 20 flights of stairs per performance; that’s kind of what the track has become. Just to make sure that maintenance of how he looks and how the show is maintained is always the same. TOOTSIE is currently playing at the Marquis Theatre - 210 W. 46th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue.

“A MAGICAL BROADWAY MUSICAL WITH BRAINS, HEART, AND COURAGE.” – TIME MAGAZINE WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin — smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

2019!

A new MoMA opens October 21 Visit broadway.com/groups or call 1-800-BROADWAY x2 to book your group today. 11 West 53 Street, New York

THE NEW MOMA In the midst of the Museum of Modern Art’s four-month closure, we can’t wait to see what’s under wraps when it reopens October 21! We caught up with Carly McCloskey, Assistant Director of Tourism Sales and Marketing at MoMA, who gave us a sneak peek at some of the museum’s upcoming offerings. What can you tell us about the new expansion? CM: We are adding more than 40,000 square feet of gallery spaces, a new performance art studio, a new flagship MoMA store, a new restaurant, and much more this fall. How can the public still enjoy what MoMA has to offer while it’s closed? CM: This is a great opportunity for people to explore MoMA PS1. That’s our affiliate museum; it’s all contemporary art, and it’s located in Long Island City, only two subway stops away from MoMA. Summer is always a really vibrant time to explore MoMA PS1 because the Young Architects program is out there. Every year we choose a different emerging architectural talent, and we give them the opportunity to design and present different projects. What can you tell us about MoMA’s new performance art studio? CM: Our opening program will be an immersive sound installation and performance by David Tudor and Composers Inside Electronics. We’ve had performance art at the museum for quite some time now, but we’ve never had a space dedicated to it, so…it’s going to give much more of an opportunity for us to have performances regularly throughout the year.

How can the Broadway community get involved? CM: I would encourage the Broadway community to get involved with our film programming. A lot of people don’t know that we have three movie theaters here at the museum, and film is one of our curatorial departments. We had Rob Marshall (dir. Cabaret; film adaptation of Chicago) come in and do a talkback, so there are a lot of opportunities…where there is a lot of Broadway crossover that people just don’t know about. What are you most excited about? CM: I’m excited to have all of the space open. We have been working really diligently behind the scenes to prepare this new vision for MoMA. We want to make sure that once we open, people feel really welcome here. We’re just really excited to share it with everyone. How can our groups benefit from everything that’s coming? CM: MoMA has always had amazing offers for groups, including discounted admission. We include free audio guides with every single ticket, in nine different languages, so we serve quite the international audience. We can also do guided tours during our regular hours, and we can even do VIP tours before we open in the morning and after we close in the evening, where our groups get really exclusive access to our galleries without the crowds.

For so many, seeing a Broadway show is the highlight of their trip to New York — the lights of the marquees, the hustle and bustle of Times Square, the sensational talent. But what if you can’t make it out to the Big Apple? Enter Broadway Across America, the leading presenter of touring Broadway productions in 45 regional markets. From The Lion King to Les Misérables, there is something on tour for everyone. Our friendly staff in each of these markets can help your group select the perfect show and provide an incredible, unforgettable experience. “I’ve got the best job in the world!” says Peggy Hughes, Broadway in Cincinnati’s Senior Group Sales Manager. “I get to sell new and different shows each season, and I love talking to customers about Broadway.” When you call to book your group tickets, you’re not reaching an anonymous call center. You’re getting directly in touch with thoughtful, experienced group sales managers and agents who know their cities inside and out. They will personally ensure your requests are being heard and do their best to give your group what it needs for a fantastic outing to the theatre. “Anyone who buys a group of 10 or more tickets in Cincinnati works with me,” says Hughes. “I have access to the available ticket inventory at my fingertips. I can even walk customers into the theatre to look at different available seats so they can really see that there is not a bad seat in the house.” Broadway has the ability to change lives, help people escape, and open minds to new perspectives. So why not see a show that’s right in your backyard?

“Witnessing a story live before your eyes, and with such quality productions on tour, is magical,” says Minneapolis Group Sales Manager Kelli Hoskins. “That interaction with live people can’t be duplicated on a screen. It’s a gift that cities outside of NYC are able to have those experiences come to us.” “I am most excited about Come From Away in our upcoming season,” says Morgan Shattuck, Broadway in Boston’s Corporate and Group Sales Manager. “One of the most remarkable, feel-good shows I’ve seen in years. We all remember where we were right after 9/11, and this story is so redeeming, and it reminds us of how people are good.” In addition to Broadway touring productions, each city offers a variety of experiences for your group to take advantage of while visiting. “Our downtown Boston venues are walking distance from the Freedom Trail, Boston Common, the Boston Tea Party Museum, and numerous colleges, making our historical area a popular destination for students and tourism,” Shattuck says. Are you ready to get started booking your group tickets? Don’t be shy – give us a call. “Go for it – try several shows!” Hoskins says. “We’re real people, and we have the tools to make your role as a group leader easy.” Peggy Hughes, Cincinnati, 513-369-4363 Kelli Hoskins, Minneapolis, 612-373-5665 Morgan Shattuck, Boston, 617-880-2463 For additional cities please visit www.broadwayacrossamerica.com
