Nous avons le devoir de l’aménager et le développer de façon raisonnée en en prenant le plus grand soin.

You know how committed we are to our region, between the lake and mountains. Whether you’re just passing by or you’re lucky enough to live here, it is a feast for the eyes and a source of fulfilment for the mind. It is our duty to manage and develop our region responsibly and with the utmost care.

Dans ce nouveau numéro du magazine PVG, dont le fil rouge est l’environnement, nous avons pris soin de mettre en avant les personnes qui, par leurs engagements et leurs convictions, participent à la préservation de notre environnement et ont choisi de partager notre leitmotiv.

COOKING WITH WILD PLANTS To take some time out in nature while discovering edible plants, the magic of trees and learning to cook with nature’s treasures, try a lesson or course with the École des Saveurs des Bois cookery school, set up by English teacher Karine Torre and ethnobotanist and gardener, Lionel Scaturro, who decided to share their passion with adults and children alike (the École des Kids opened this year). The school is located in Gruffy, a charming little village at the foot of the Bauges massif.

HAPPY FAMILIES To the great delight of children, the Groupe PVG has designed a beautifully illustrated Happy Families game.

The game is available in the group’s establishments, with the 7 families each representing a different establishment, symbolised by its totem animal and in which each character is depicted in a well-known location. A pelican for the eponymous new 5-star, a swan for the Impérial Palace, a Saint-Bernard dog for the Au Cœur du Village, an owl for the Beauregard hotel, a bear for the Alpen Roc, a deer for the Christiana and a sheep for the chalets and residences. “I’d like grandpa bear at the panoramic bar in the Alpen Roc!”

HYBRID BOAT In the spring of 2020, the Lake Annecy boat company expanded its fleet with the Amiral, a newgeneration hybrid boat designed to have a minimal environmental impact.

It features an innovative combination (a world first!) of a lithium electric motor and a combustion engine running on marine GTL. 20m long and capable of transporting up to 150 passengers, the red and white ship makes the crossing from Annecy to Doussard in 35 minutes. Bikes accepted!

vec sa vue lac imprenable, Le Pélican s’étend sur deux bâtiments : un premier, qui est l’ancien hospice de la ville datant de 1820, et un nouveau, dessiné par l’architecte Christian de Portzamparc et construit par le Crédit Agricole Immobilier. Deux bâtiments reliés par une passerelle suspendue et vitrée comme un fil tissé entre passé et futur qui renouvelle les codes de l’hôtellerie durable.

ith its unobstructed lake views, Le Pélican is composed of two constructions: the first is the town’s former nursing home and dates back to 1820, while the new building was designed by architect, Christian de Portzamparc and built by Crédit Agricole Immobilier. The two constructions are joined by a suspended glass walkway, providing a link between the past and the future, and are rewriting the rules of sustainable hospitality.

UNE VISION ENGAGÉE Nouveau 4 étoiles sur le lac, Le Pélican est aussi et surtout peu énergivore, l’énergie destinée à produire l’eau chaude, dont celle de la future piscine mais également le chauffage et la climatisation de l’hôtel, qui fait quelque 4 350 m2, étant produite par une « boucle d’eau » créée dans le lac d’Annecy. L’unique construite à ce jour dans un lac en France. Comme l’explique Olivier Pollet-Villard, directeur général du Groupe PVG : « Je suis un montagnard de La Clusaz. Nous avons été élevés dans la nature et vivons au quotidien en communion avec elle, que ce soit la montagne, la neige, le lac. De fait, c’est une évidence pour nous d’en prendre soin, car elle est notre meilleur atout. » À ce titre, le Pélican a également adhéré au collectif international 1 % For the Planet, s’engageant à reverser 1 % de son chiffre d’affaires à des associations œuvrant en faveur de l’environnement. « C’est le premier hôtel de France à faire partie de cette association, poursuit Olivier Pollet-Villard, mais c’est aussi une manière d’intéresser et d’associer les salariés aux évolutions et changements de la transition écologique dans leur façon de travailler. » Sans dire que l’hôtel sensibilise aussi ses clients, qui ne trouveront par exemple nulle trace de bouteille en plastique ici.

A COMMIT TED VISION A new lakeside 4-star hotel, Le Pélican, is above all energyefficient. The energy used to produce hot water, including that used in the future pool, as well as the heating and air conditioning of the hotel – a space covering 4,350 m2 – is produced by a ‘water loop’ created in Lake Annecy. It is the only one of its kind built in a French lake to date. As explained by Olivier Pollet-Villard, managing director of the Groupe PVG, “I’m a mountain man from La Clusaz. We were brought up in a natural setting and we live in communion with nature each day, whether it be the mountains, the snow or the lake. So, it’s only natural for us to take care of our environment, seeing as it’s our most valuable asset”.

For this reason, le Pélican has also joined the international 1% For the Planet collective and has undertaken to donate 1% of its turnover to environmental charities. “It’s the first hotel in France to be part of the movement, continues Olivier Pollet-Villard, and it’s also a way for us to get staff on board and involved with developments and changes as part of the ecological transition in the workplace”. Without forgetting that the hotel also raises awareness among guests, who will not find any plastic bottles in the hotel whatsoever.

Mais encore ? Outre une empreinte carbone faible, l’hôtel a fait appel à des talents et savoir-faire locaux. « Notre volonté est de travailler avec des entreprises locales, souligne Olivier Pollet-Villard.

Apart from having a low carbon footprint, the hotel also called upon local talented crafts people and experts. “We strive to work with local companies, points out Olivier Pollet-Villard. We’re a family company with an inherited vision of our business. We opted to make a long-term investment in the region and to support the local ecosystem”.

UN HÔTEL VIVANT La cuisine suit les mêmes préceptes, entre cuisine du monde fusion et bistronomie, snacking deluxe et bar à jus ou à soupes, le tout concocté à partir de produits frais, locaux, et bio ou raisonnés avec, en prime, la possibilité d’admirer les brigades à l’œuvre.

Le Pélican, oiseau qui symbolise la renaissance et le don, se veut donc tout autant ouvert sur le lac que sur la vie de ce nouveau quartier des Trésums, destiné à incarner le renouveau de la ville. C’est dans cette idée qu’a été conçu le lobby qui s’articule en plusieurs espaces : corner où acheter du délicieux pain, fabriqué par l’artisan boulanger annécien Rouge, espaces de convivialité et de connectivité partagés afin de prendre un petit-déjeuner, une pause goûter voire travailler.

Un véritable lieu à vivre, y compris pour les gens du quartier, décoré avec élégance et contemporanéité. Comme l’explique Hervé Lefillatre, l’architecte-décorateur de l’hôtel Le Pélican : « Nous avons joué pour le lobby sur le côté très végétal avec un grand plafond voûté recouvert de plantes stabilisées. Les différents espaces alternent des coins calmes, aux tonalités neutres et naturelles, et des coins plus colorés, avec une touche pop et acidulée. »

A VIBRANT HOTEL The kitchens follow the same principles, serving up fusion and bistronomy, deluxe snacks, juices and soups, all prepared using fresh, local and organic or responsibly-produced ingredients, with, as an added bonus, the possibility to see kitchen staff at work.

Le Pélican hotel, named after a bird which embodies rebirth and giving, embraces the lake just as much as it embraces the new Trésums district, a symbol of renewal for the town. The lobby was designed with this in mind and is divided into several areas: a place in which to buy delicious bread, baked by Annecy’s artisan baker Rouge, communal meeting and connected spaces where you can eat breakfast, a snack or even work. It is a vibrant place, which also attracts local residents, with an elegant and contemporary design. As explained by Hervé Lefillatre, Le Pélican’s architect and decorator, “in the lobby we went for a very botanical look, with a large vaulted ceiling covered with stabilised foliage. The different areas feature quiet corners with neutral and natural hues and more colourful spaces with bright touches”.

UNE ATMOSPHÈRE ÉLÉGANTE ET FEUTRÉE Côté chambres, au nombre de 101 dont six suites, la déco se veut sobre, moderne et cosy. « Nous avons choisi, poursuit Hervé Lefillatre, une colorimétrie faisant le lien entre le lac et la montagne comme le mélaminé bleu azur, des textiles aux faux unis, mêlant bleu et bronze, des luminaires en verre fumé. Les salles de bains, elles, sont très minérales, avec un marbre reconstitué, du métal martelé et des essences de bois noble comme le chêne. » Sans oublier l’expérience client, améliorée par une foule de services digitaux, telle une appli pour smartphones permettant d’ouvrir la chambre, d’accéder aux services de réservation comme de conciergerie ou de consulter sa consommation d’eau et d’électricité, histoire d’en prendre conscience. Ou encore la création d’une chambre immersive, à apprécier depuis la suite du dernier étage de l’ancien bâtiment, avec son plafond voûté agrémenté d’un projecteur à 360°.

A PLUSH AND ELEGANT ATMOSPHERE In the 101 rooms, six of which are suites, guests will find a sober, modern and cosy interior design. “We wanted colours that provide a link between the lake and mountains, explains Hervé Lefillatre, such as sky-blue melamine, plain textiles combining blue and bronze and smoked glass light fittings. Bathrooms are mineral, with reconstituted marble, hammered metal and noble wood including oak”.

Without forgetting the guest experience, enhanced further thanks to a whole host of digital services including a smartphone application for opening your room, accessing booking and concierge services or checking electricity and water consumption, to raise awareness of this important issue. There is also an ‘immersive room’, to be experienced in the top floor suite of the old building – with a vaulted ceiling and a 360° projector.

Créé en 2001 aux États-Unis par le fondateur de Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard, et Craig Mathews, le collectif international 1 % For The Planet fédère des entreprises s’engageant à donner au moins 1 % de leur chiffre d’affaires à des associations œuvrant pour la préservation de l’environnement : biodiversité, eau, pollution, espaces naturels, alimentation, climat. En France, la dynamique est telle qu’une antenne du collectif est créée à Annecy en 2014.

L’hôtel Le Pélican, lui, est le premier hôtel en France à s’être engagé dans ce collectif international qui permet, chaque année, de reverser aux associations françaises agissant pour la planète plus de 7 millions d’euros et, dans le monde, plus de 27 millions de dollars.

Set up in the US in 2001 by the founder of Patagonia, Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, the international 1% for the Planet collective brings together companies who undertake to donate at least 1% of their turnover to environmental non-profits working in the domains of biodiversity, water, pollution, natural areas, food and climate. In France there has been so much enthusiasm that the collective opened a centre in Annecy in 2014. Le Pélican hotel is the first hotel in France to sign up to this international collective, which provides French environmental non-profits with more than 7 million euros yearly and international non-profits with more than 27 million dollars yearly.

Parmi les plus grands noms de l’architecture contemporaine, Christian de Portzamparc redessine depuis 40 ans le paysage urbain aux quatre coins du globe : Japon, Chine, New York, Paris, Rio, Annecy…

Une vision ouverte de la ville saluée dans le monde entier, pour un architecte aussi prolifique que discret.

One of the great names in contemporary architecture, for the last 40 years Christian de Portzamparc has been redesigning townscapes all over the world – Japan, China, New York, Paris, Rio, Annecy – an open vision of cities which is acclaimed around the globe, for this architect who is as prolific as he is discreet.

Premier architecte français à obtenir le Prix Pritzker en 1994, l’équivalent du Nobel, Christian de Portzamparc s’est vu décerner une foule de prestigieux prix et distinctions : Grand Prix de l’urbanisme en 2004, Praemium Imperiale (catégorie architecture) en 2018, membre d’Honneur de l’American Institute of Architects (AIA), Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres… et la liste est longue.

Sa spécificité ? Sa conception du paysage urbain, à laquelle il songe déjà durant ses études aux Beaux-Arts qu’il suit à Rennes dans les années 60 (il est né à Casablanca en 1944, au Maroc). Une période où l’Europe est en pleine reconstruction et où les villes nouvelles et grands ensembles poussent comme des champignons. Le jeune architecte comprend d’emblée qu’il est nécessaire d’ouvrir ces espaces, en évitant les hauteurs écrasantes et en préservant les cours à l’arrière des immeubles, sans se couper de la vie de quartier et de la rue, notions référentes et structurantes de ses projets architecturaux.

D’où son concept d’ « îlot ouvert », dont la structure permet la circulation de l’air, du mouvement et de la lumière. Au cœur de son travail ? La ville et la manière dont on la vit, que ce soit en termes de travail, de déplacement ou de sociabilité, et la qualité des espaces de vie, collectifs et individuels.

Diplômé des Beaux-Arts en 1969, il crée son agence en 1980 : l’Atelier Christian de Portzamparc. En 2010, il fonde avec son épouse Élizabeth de Portzamparc, architecte-urbaniste franco-brésilienne, l’agence 2Portzamparc, dans laquelle chacun continue de travailler avec son équipe et ses spécificités.

L’agence, sorte de « laboratoire urbain », signe d’innombrables projets, devenus depuis des bâtiments symboles dont nombre de quartiers, tours, musées et espaces culturels (son dada) XXL : Cité de la Musique à La Villette, Philharmonie du Luxembourg, Tour LVMH à New York…

Pour l’heure, l’architecte s’attelle, entre autres, au Grand Théâtre de Casablanca au Maroc, au Centre Culturel de Suzhou en Chine et aux tours Sisters à ParisLa Défense qui comprendront des bureaux et un complexe hôtelier… Sans oublier la peinture, ayant présenté à Paris, chez Kamel Mennour, fin 2019, sa première exposition : « Illuminations ».

The first French architect to scoop the Pritzker Prize in 1994 – recognised as the Nobel Prize of architecture – Christian de Portzamparc has received a multitude of prestigious prizes and recognitions: Grand Prix for town planning in 2004, Praemium Imperiale (architecture category) in 2018, member of Honour of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), “Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres”, the list goes on…

He specialises in designing townscapes, something he already dreamt of while studying at the Rennes Fine Arts Academy in the 1960s (he was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1944). It was a time when Europe was in a reconstruction phase and when new cities and large-scale developments were springing up like mushrooms.

The young architect immediately understood the need to open up these areas, avoiding towering constructions and preserving courtyards behind buildings, without shutting out the life of the neighbourhood and the street – the key and inspirational notions behind his architectural projects. Hence his concept of an “open cluster”, with a structure enabling air, movement and light to circulate. Central to his work are cities and the way in which we experience them, whether in terms of work, travel or social life and the quality of living areas, both communal and private.

After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1969, he set up his agency, l’Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, in 1980. In 2010, with his wife, Élizabeth de Portzamparc, a Franco-Brazilian architect-town planner, he founded the 2Portzamparc agency, where both architects continue to work with their own teams and specialities. The agency, a kind of “urban laboratory”, is behind countless projects which have since become symbolic buildings, including a number of districts, towers, museums and XXL cultural spaces (his passion): the Cité de la Musique in Paris’ La Villette park, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the LVMH Tower in New York, and more besides.

For the time being, and amongst other projects, the architect is working on the Grand Théâtre de Casablanca in Morocco, the Suzhou Cultural Centre in China and the Sisters Towers in Paris-La Défense, which will house offices and a hotel complex. Without forgetting paintings, his first exhibition, “Illuminations”, was presented at the end of 2019 in Paris, at the Kamel Mennour gallery.

« L’écologie est bien plus qu’une préoccupation, c’est une obligation », confie Philippe Gourgaud, directeur général des exploitations du Groupe PVG. Et en matière de développement durable, le Groupe PVG n’a pas attendu la tendance green pour prendre conscience de son rôle à jouer. « Aujourd’hui, nous communiquons davantage sur notre engagement. Au début, nous étions plutôt discrets, presque trop. Il faut dire que nous n’avions pas à l’époque un public très réceptif. » Avec la création de PVG Green qui regroupe les initiatives écoresponsables, le groupe hôtelier affiche ses objectifs, affirmant ses valeurs environnementales et des actions concrètes. « Notre prise de conscience est grandissante et notre impact environnemental est désormais systématiquement réfléchi avant de prendre une décision et avant même de se poser une question. Au-delà d’une stratégie, c’est une vraie valeur ajoutée pour le groupe. C’est un investissement mais au final, tout le monde est gagnant », ajoute Philippe Gourgaud.

De la sensibilisation des clients et du personnel à la gestion des déchets, tous les établissements participent à cette mise au vert avec, comme figure de proue, l’Impérial Palace d’Annecy qui participe à de nombreuses actions écoresponsables et encourage ses clients à adopter les mêmes comportements. « Les préoccupations écologiques font partie intégrante de l’ADN du groupe qui n’a eu de cesse de privilégier la production locale, la valorisation du terroir, l’attachement à une terre que l’on se doit de protéger. » Des mots aux actions concrètes, petit tour d’horizon des gestes adoptés.

“Ecology is more than a concern, it’s an obligation”, explains Philippe Gourgaud, General Manager at the PVG Group. And in terms of sustainable development, the PVG Group did not wait for the green trend to acknowledge the role it should play. “We communicate a lot more now about our commitment. At first, we were more discreet, almost too much so. At the time, the public wasn’t very receptive”. With the creation of PVG Green, which brings together eco-friendly initiatives, the hotel group is openly setting out its objectives, affirming its environmental values and concrete actions. “Our awareness is growing and our environmental impact is now routinely considered prior to making a decision and even before asking a question. More than a strategy, it’s a true added value for the group. It’s an investment but at the end of the day, everyone’s a winner”, adds Philippe Gourgaud.

From raising awareness among guests and staff about waste management, all of the establishments are included in the green drive, with as its leading figure, the Impérial Palace in Annecy which is involved in a number of ecofriendly initiatives and which encourages its clients to engage in similar behaviour. “Ecological concerns are an integral part of the group’s DNA. Local production is always the first choice, thus promoting the “terroir” and being loyal to an area which it is our duty to safeguard”.

These words are backed up by concrete actions. Let’s take a closer look at some of the measures adopted.

À TABLE !

Dans le Groupe PVG, être écoresponsable, c’est d’abord faire attention à ce que l’on mange et ne pas gaspiller. Le personnel est donc invité à participer à cet engagement collectif au quotidien. Des écriteaux sur les buffets rappellent de veiller à finir son assiette, à être attentif aux quantités, quitte à demander une nouvelle portion de frites !

Au menu ? Une fois par semaine, un repas sans viande à la cafétéria du personnel, du poisson issu de la pêche responsable, des produits locaux et de saison…

DINNER IS SERVED! In the PVG Group, being eco-friendly means, first and foremost, paying attention to what you eat and not being wasteful. Staff are asked to participate in this collective undertaking each day. Signs on buffets remind diners to ensure they finish what is on their plates and to pay attention to quantities, even if it means asking for another portion of French fries later! The menu is meat-free at the staff cafeteria once a week, fish comes from responsible fisheries and local and seasonal produce is always the first choice.

COLLECTER POUR MIEUX RECYCLER Dans chaque établissement PVG, la gestion des déchets est un cheval de bataille. Bouchons en plastique et en liège, cartons, cagettes, films plastiques… font l’objet d’un tri sélectif et sont donnés pour être recyclés, comme les restes des repas, dont ceux des restaurants, servant au compost. Idem pour les savons usagés confiés à l’association Unisoap qui les recycle à des fins humanitaires, sachant que désormais, la plupart ont été remplacés par des dispenseurs grand format. Sans oublier que chaque membre du personnel dispose de sa gourde, histoire d’éviter les bouteilles en plastique. Tandis que 530 kg de capsules Nespresso ont été collectés à l’Impérial Palace, ce ne sont pas moins de 42 tonnes de bio-déchets qui ont également été recyclés en 2019. Des chiffres éloquents !

COLLECTING FOR MORE EFFECTIVE RECYCLING In each PVG establishment, waste management is a priority. Plastic and cork bottle stoppers, boxes, wooden crates and plastic film are all sorted and sent for recycling, just like leftovers from meals, including those from the restaurants, which go in the compost. The same goes for used soaps, which are sent to the association Unisoap to be recycled for humanitarian purposes, keeping in mind that nowadays, soap has largely been replaced by large-format liquid soap dispensers.

Each member of staff also carries their own water bottle, to avoid plastic bottles. 530kg of Nespresso capsules were collected at the Impérial Palace in 2019, that’s 42 tonnes of organic waste which was also recycled. The figures speak for themselves!

DES SÉMINAIRES ÉCO-FRIENDLY Très prisés par la clientèle d’affaires, les hôtels du Groupe PVG ont adopté différentes mesures afin de limiter l’impact carbone des événements. Cela commence par la bonne isolation des lieux, la gestion du chauffage et de la climatisation, programmables pour limiter la consommation d’énergie. Quant aux récipients et cuillères utilisés lors des réceptions, ils sont en amidon de maïs ou à base de palmiers biodégradables.

UN ENGAGEMENT RÉCOMPENSÉ Distingué pour sa démarche écoresponsable, l’Impérial Palace s’est vu décerner en 2017 son premier label relatif à l’environnement appelé « Étiquette Environnementale » (sachant qu’un second label est en cours d’obtention). En participant à cet affichage environnemental qui analyse l’empreinte carbone, la consommation d’eau et d’énergie, le pourcentage de produits bio et écolabellisés…, le Groupe PVG démontre sa volonté de s’adapter au grand défi d’un tourisme plus responsable. UN BATEAU VOLANT Pour mettre à flots ce trimaran futuriste hors normes, l’Hydroptère, Alain Thébault remue ciel et terre. Son idée de génie ? Réduire au minimum la surface immergée du bateau afin de rendre l’eau moins résistante, moins dure, pour aller plus vite que n’importe quel autre bateau. Soutenu par Éric Tabarly et Alain de Bergh, directeur du département du calcul des structures chez Dassault, il vend son appartement et part pour l’aventure.

Car, comme il le confie : « Ce sont les rêves qui permettent à la société d’évoluer. Il faut aller au bout de ses rêves, c’est essentiel dans la vie. » Après trois crashs, entre chacun desquels il devient père, et une foule d’obstacles surmontés, Alain Thébault décroche, en 2009, le record de vitesse absolu à la voile avec une pointe à 55,5 nœuds, soit plus de 100 km/h.

Un rêve… sauf que comme le lui font remarquer ses trois filles alors (depuis, il a eu deux autres jeunes garçons), il devrait faire voler tout le monde ! Ils sont alors sur un ponton à Hawaï. Juste à côté d’eux, Bertrand Piccard, qui a bouclé le tour du monde à bord du Solar Impulse en juillet 2016, rit…

A FLYING BOAT Alain Thébault moved heaven and earth to get the extraordinary and futuristic trimaran, named Hydroptère into the water. His idea was to minimise the boat’s submerged surface to make the water less resistant, less hard and to go faster than any other boat. With support from Éric Tabarly and Alain de Bergh, Director of the Structural Calculations Department for Dassault, he sold his flat and set off on an adventure. As he explains, “these kinds of dreams allow society to develop. You have to follow your dreams, that’s so important in life”.

After three crashes, becoming a father between each one and overcoming many obstacles, in 2009 Alain Thébault won the world speed sailing record, reaching a maximum speed of 55.5 knots, that is more than 100 km/h. The stuff dreams are made of, except that, as his three daughters point out (he has had 2 sons since then) he ought to enable everyone to fly! They were on a pontoon in Hawaii at the time. Just next to them, Bertrand Piccard, who travelled around the world on the Solar Impulse in July 2016, began to laugh.

Vivant alors dans sa 2-CV, avec sa planche à voile fixée sur le toit (quand il ne fait pas de planeur, sa deuxième passion), le jeune homme, surdoué en maths mais de tempérament très turbulent – c’est ainsi qu’il se décrit –, décide de quitter les bancs de l’école de son village breton deux ans avant le baccalauréat, pour suivre Éric Tabarly dont il sera le dernier matelot. Une rencontre décisive doublée d’une belle histoire puisque le grand navigateur l’embarque dans son rêve de bateau volant.

t all began when an 18-year-old Alain Thébault met Éric Tabarly, a successful French yachtsman. Living at the time in his Citroen 2-CV “Dolly”, with his windsurf attached to the roof, (when he wasn’t doing his second passion – gliding), the gifted mathematician with a very unruly nature (as he describes himself ) decided to quit school in his Brittany village two years before his leaving exams to follow Tabarly, for whom he would be the last deckhand. The encounter turned out to be life-changing when the great yachtsman got him involved in his dream of creating a flying boat.

2 PASSIONS, 2 COULEURS : BLEU ET VERT Quelques années plus tard, Alain Thébault partage son temps entre Annecy, où il a ses bureaux, et les vignobles de Lavaux en Suisse où il vit. Car en plus de la mer, cet aventurier des temps modernes aime terriblement le vélo. Au point d’en avoir fait son critère d’installation dans cette région.

Son équipe d’ingénieurs va d’ailleurs travailler en deux-roues. « Annecy offre un merveilleux cadre de vie et est une ville de plus en plus verte ».

C’est donc ici, plus précisément à Saint-Jorioz, qu’il a décidé de s’installer et « d’attirer de la matière grise » comme il le dit. La petite Venise étant, qui plus est, tout près de Genève et de son aéroport international, ainsi que de l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), avec laquelle il travaille en étroite collaboration. Son bureau d’études compte ainsi une dizaine d’ingénieurs à ce jour, le navigateur ayant prévu d’embaucher 90 personnes sur les trois prochaines années. Car ce « pilote d’un rêve », pour reprendre le titre de son ouvrage publié en 2005 (chez Flammarion), travaille pour l’heure sur l’hydrogène vert, « le pétrole de demain » à ses yeux, en utilisant la puissance des fleuves. « La Suisse, l’Allemagne et la région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes sont très en avance sur ce domaine. Il y a toutes les composantes ici pour faire des bateaux volants à hydrogène. »

2 PASSIONS, 2 COLOURS: BLUE AND GREEN A few years on and Alain Thébault splits his time between Annecy, where he has his offices, and the vineyards of Lavaux in Switzerland, where he lives.

Because as well as the sea, this modern-day explorer is a great fan of cycling.

So much so that it was the main reason why he set up in this region. His team of engineers even travel to work by bike. “Annecy offers wonderful living conditions, and an ever-greener way of life”. It is here and in Saint-Jorioz to be precise, where Alain Thébault decided to put down roots and “attract grey matter”, as he puts it. Annecy, aka the little Venice, just so happens to be a stone’s throw away from Geneva and its international airport, as well as the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) school with which he works in close collaboration.

His development department currently employs a dozen engineers, and the yachtsman plans to hire 90 people over the next three years. The “pilot of dreams”, to quote the title of his book published in 2005 by Flammarion, is now working on green hydrogen, “the oil of tomorrow” in his opinion, harnessing the power of rivers. “Switzerland, Germany and the AuvergneRhône-Alpes region are all pioneers in the domain. There is everything we need here to make flying hydrogen boats”.

Sans oublier son projet de bus volants. Des Flybus à hydrogène, pour lesquels les plus grandes villes du globe sont en première ligne pour passer commande, dont San Francisco et Miami. « La planète brûle et il faut en préserver les ressources. Nous sommes tous posés sur la même sphère.

Et je souhaite d’abord me rendre utile pour la collectivité » Le tout en prenant le temps d’aller se promener à La Clusaz… le cadre de vie étant, ici, « extraordinaire ».

I CLEAN MY LAKE Tout a commencé par un jeu de chasse au trésor un peu spécial en juillet 2019.

Pour occuper une journée de vacances, quatre frères et sœurs équipés de masques, tubas et palmes plongent dans le port de Veyrier-duLac sous la surveillance de leur père. En guise de trésor, les enfants remontent en fait des objets aussi surprenants qu’une chaise d’écolier ou des chargeurs de portables… Car dans la famille Abrahami, on souhaite avant tout préserver l’environnement : chaque baignade est l’occasion de ramasser les déchets trouvés dans l’eau.

Et pour partager cette expérience et encourager d’autres à le faire, la famille a créé le compte Instagram « I clean my lake » (« je nettoie mon lac ») sur lequel elle publie tout ce qu’elle trouve au fond du lac. L’objectif ?

Créer un élan citoyen et une prise de conscience afin de préserver ce patrimoine naturel si précieux.

I CLEAN MY LAKE It all began with a rather special treasure hunt back in July 2019. To keep busy during their holidays, four siblings equipped with masks, tubas and flippers, went diving in Veyrier-du-Lac port under the watchful gaze of their father. Instead of treasure, the children brought some surprising objects to the surface, including school chairs and phone chargers.

For the Abrahami family, preserving the environment is a crucial objective. Every swim is a chance to pick up litter discarded in the water.

And to share this experience and to encourage others to follow the family’s heels, they created an Instagram account called “I clean my lake”, on which they publish photos of everything they find on the floor of the lake.

The aim being to generate enthusiasm and to raise awareness in order to safeguard this precious natural heritage.

WATER FAMILY DU FLOCON À LA VAGUE L’association Water Family - Du Flocon à la Vague a pour mission d’éduquer à la protection de l’eau, de la santé et de la planète. Depuis 2009, elle développe des programmes pédagogiques complets pour les scolaires, les entreprises et les événements. Le tout avec une approche d’éducation positive et une valorisation des bonnes pratiques. Marianne Brechu est la responsable de l’antenne Rhône-Alpes à Annecy et ambassadrice de l’association.

Surnommée la « sirène du lac », l’ancienne skieuse, vicechampionne du monde de Ski Freeride, insuffle son énergie depuis 2017 au développement des actions dans la région, avec pour mission de sensibiliser, fédérer et réunir petits et grands autour de la protection de l’eau et des solutions possibles pour demain. À suivre, la prochaine édition de la manifestation « On se mouille pour la planète », prévue en décembre 2020.

WATER FAMILY FROM SNOWFLAKE TO WAVE The Water Family association – Du Flocon à la Vague [From Snowflake to Wave] aims to educate people about water, health and global protection. Since 2009, it has developed comprehensive educational programmes for schools, companies and events.

Each programme features a positive education approach and promotes good practices.

Marianne Brechu is head of the Rhône-Alpes branch in Annecy and the association’s ambassador. Nicknamed the “lake mermaid”, the former skier and Vice World Ski Freeride Champion, has worked tirelessly since 2017 to develop initiatives in the area to raise awareness and to unite adults and children to help protect water and to find solutions for tomorrow. The next edition of the “Get wet for the planet” event will take place in December 2020.

RIDERS FOR REFUGEES Impulsée en 2015 par Danny Burrows, rédacteur en chef d’un magazine de snowboard, l’association « Riders for refugees », basée à Annecy, est née du constat des difficultés pour les réfugiés en Europe de supporter les températures hivernales sans équipement adéquat.

Mais aussi de celui que l’industrie de l’outdoor croule parfois sous des produits invendus, sans oublier les vêtements des particuliers passés de mode, un peu abîmés ou oubliés dans les placards.

La vocation de Rider for Refugees est donc de faire le lien entre ces univers. Pour cela, elle rassemble des bénévoles, parmi lesquels des ambassadeurs skieurs professionnels, qui se démènent pour collecter des vêtements chauds afin de les donner à des associations au contact des migrants. Chaque année, plus de 5 000 pièces (pantalons, gants, vestes…) sont ainsi collectées et offertes à ceux qui ont froid.

RIDERS FOR REFUGEES Instigated in 2015 by Danny Burrows, editor-in-chief of a snowboarding magazine, the Annecy-based association, “Riders for refugees”, was created in response to the difficulties faced by refugees who find themselves in Europe in winter without adequate clothing. It is also a response to the observation that the outdoor industry is often swamped with unsold products, without forgetting second hand garments no longer in fashion, a little worse for wear or forgotten in wardrobes.

The vocation of Riders for Refugees is therefore to act as a link between these two universes. For this to happen, they bring together volunteers, including professional skiing ambassadors, who work hard to collect warm clothing to donate to associations working with migrants. Each year, more than 5,000 items (trousers, gloves, jackets, etc.) are collected in this way and distributed to those in need.

ôté lac, le nouveau maire écologiste d’Annecy, François Astorg, entend bien tout mettre en œuvre pour que la Venise des Alpes ne perde ni de sa superbe, ni de sa qualité de vie que tant d’autres lui envient. En ligne de mire, la transition écologique et énergétique de la ville, avec l’idée de faire d’Annecy la ville à l’air le plus pur d’Europe et l’une des plus cyclables de France. Pour ce faire ? Un travail de fond est engagé sur les transports, avec une amélioration de l’offre des transports en commun, le développement du covoiturage de proximité, des services d’auto-partage et des parkings partagés, ainsi qu’une augmentation

de la flotte de vélos de la ville. Mais encore ? La végétalisation de la ville et des espaces publics ainsi que des écoles. Chaque année, deux d’entre elles seront donc rénovées sur le plan énergétique (une autre priorité) et « débitumées » avec la création de jardins-potagers. Sans parler de la préservation du foncier agricole, de la filière bois pour la construction ou encore la production d’énergie locale.

akeside, the new ecologist mayor of Annecy, François Astorg, intends to do his utmost to ensure that the Venice of the Alps loses nothing of its splendour, nor of its quality of life, which is the envy of so many. He has his sights set on the town’s ecological and energy transition, with the aim of turning Annecy into the town with the cleanest air in Europe and one of the most bike-friendly places in France. With this in mind, substantive work has been undertaken in the area of transport, with an improvement in public transport, the development of

local car-pooling initiatives, car-sharing services and shared car-parks, as well as an expansion of Annecy’s bike fleet. The town and its public spaces are also being replanted, as well as schools. Each year, two of which will be made more energy efficient (another priority) and “de-asphalted”, with the creation of kitchen gardens. Without forgetting the preservation of agricultural land, the timber sector for construction and local energy production.

AND IN THE MOUNTAINS? There is a similar desire to preserve this exceptional natural heritage, especially with the climate emergency, which is a key challenge for mountain resorts. In La Clusaz, the new mayor, Didier Thévenet, former deputy mayor and president of the resort’s Tourist Office, is therefore pursuing the energy transition initiated by the former mayor, with the aim of turning La Clusaz into a favourite, year-round destination. Here too, travel is a key issue. People are being encouraged

Didier Thévenet, ancien adjoint et président de l’Office de Tourisme de la station, poursuit donc la transition énergétique amorcée par le maire sortant, avec l’objectif de faire de La Clusaz une destination quatre saisons de choix. La mobilité est là aussi un point essentiel : incitation à la pratique du co-voiturage, facilitée notamment par l’application Mov’ici ou encore tictactrip qui compare et combine billets de train, bus, navettes et même trajets blablacar.

Abandon des produits phytosanitaires (désherbants, insecticides, fongicides…) côté pistes et espaces verts, qui privilégient l’usage d’engrais organiques. L’espace aquatique, équipé d’une pompe à chaleur chauffant ses bassins et locaux, grâce aux calories présentes dans l’air extérieur, a permis de réduire par quatre son empreinte carbone.

Sans oublier la gestion du domaine skiable. Comme l’explique Jean-Christophe Hoff, directeur de la Satelc : « 100 % de la consommation électrique est issue de l’énergie locale avec le barrage de Seyssel en Haute-Savoie. Nous avons également créé un fonds carbone avec une taxe de 50 € par tonne. Ce fonds financera toutes les initiatives visant à limiter les gaz à effet de serre. » Enfin, l’équipement par Snowsat du domaine, qui collecte les données en temps réel et permet de produire la juste quantité de neige de culture tout en limitant la consommation d’eau, et l’entrée sur le domaine cette saison d’une dameuse hybride, la première d’une nouvelle « flotte ». Le développement durable étant, comme il le souligne, une priorité !

Plant protection products have been scrapped (weed killers, insecticides, fungicides, etc.) on paths and green spaces, with organic fertilisers now being preferred. Heat pumps now heat the town’s pools and water on premises, thanks to calories present in the outside air, bringing about a fourfold reduction in its carbon footprint.

Without forgetting ski domain management; as explained by Satelc Director, Jean-Christophe Hoff, “100% of the energy we consume comes from local energy thanks to Seyssel dam in Haute-Savoie. We’ve also created a carbon fund with a 50€ tax per tonne. The fund will finance all the initiatives aiming to limit greenhouse gas emissions”.

Finally, the ski area has been fitted with Snowsat, which collects data in real time and enables the right amount of artificial snow to be produced, while limiting water consumption. Also new for this season is a hybrid snow groomer – the first of a new fleet. Sustainable development is a priority as he correctly points out!

Metallic wall lights representing minimalist deer antlers, tables reminding the mountains, with chiselled mountain designs, crosses embellishing peaks and snow flake chandeliers. An endless range of creations with a strong Alpine identity, all designed and produced in the Alps.

Handmade in Talloires in the Alps using organic cotton manufactured in Lyon, Coline Rouvière’s creations playfully remind the magical childhood universe and the mountains. Passionate about sewing, this former ER nurse who loved sewing for her own children, family and friends, now designs irresistible bed valances and cushions in the shape of soft and gentle mountain peaks, mini gondola lift mobiles and cosy rugs and throws for babies.

A ceramist with a lot on offer, Anne Marmottan nimbly shapes clay in her workshop in Sainte-FoyTarentaise. Her larger handmade creations are wheel-thrown or moulded, before being carefully painted or decorated. Bowls are engraved with polar bears and crockery is embellished with small pine trees. Anne Marmottan’s favourite colour is pristine white of course, for the purity of snow.

She is also fond of the forest universe and combines ceramics with wool, leather and wood – such as in her light fittings.

Le terroir est une formidable source d’inspiration, où que l’on soit. Deux fois par semaine, je fais le marché de La Clusaz et du Grand-Bornand, qui me permettent de trouver des variétés de certains produits qui sont rattachés à l’histoire et au terroir », explique Vincent Deforce. Sans omettre les cueillettes de plantes sauvages que le désormais chef du restaurant Le Cœur (jusqu’à l’hiver 2018-2019, il en était le chef pâtissier) fait avec ses équipes : myrtilles, aspérule, reinedes-prés, sureau ou encore ail des ours qui pousse au bord de la rivière qui passe à La Clusaz et que l’on retrouve en pesto. « Le local apporte une vraie valeur ajoutée à la cuisine et il est de plus en plus important, car nos ressources (ndlr. à l’échelle de la planète) sont limitées. La cuisine de demain doit donc en tenir compte. »

Twice a week I head to La Clusaz and Grand-Bornand markets, where I find the kind of products which are linked to history and to the region”, explains Vincent Deforce. Without forgetting foraging for wild plants, which the new head chef of Le Cœur (until winter 2018-2019 he was the pastry chef ) does with his staff. They gather blueberries, woodruff, meadowsweet, elderberry and wild garlic, which grows on the banks of the river running through La Clusaz and which is made into pesto.

“Local produce brings a real added value to cooking and it is ever more important, because our resources (Editor’s note: on a global scale), are limited. Tomorrow’s cooking should take this into consideration”.

“TERROIR IS A WONDERFUL SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, WHEREVER YOU ARE. VINCENT DEFORCE

LE LOCAVORISME, UNE PHILOSOPHIE… Par chance, les chefs qui orchestrent les tables des établissements PVG, tel Adrien Tupin-Bron, chef du restaurant gastronomique La Voile à l’Imperial Palace Annecy, et Vincent Deforce travaillent déjà en ce sens depuis plusieurs années. Aussi, la crème et le lait viennent de fermes proches, les fromages de l’artisan-fromager Alain Michel, basé à Annecy et La Clusaz. La viande, elle, est sélectionnée chez des producteurs locaux et maisons dont les viandes de terroir sont d’exception : Maison Boudet à La Clusaz, volaille de Bresse de la Maison Miéral dans l’Ain, Maison JA Gastronomie dans le Pays de La Loire… Les poissons, quant à eux, viennent de lacs comme le brochet et la perche pêchés dans le Léman. La carte évolue donc au fil des saisons et des arrivages. « Nous travaillons uniquement des produits de saison français, qu’ils soient bio ou raisonnés, car je préfère du raisonné français à du bio venu d’Espagne », souligne Vincent.

LOCALLY- SOURCED PRODUCE – A PHILOSOPHY Fortunately, the chefs in charge of the PVG restaurants, including Adrien Tupin-Bron, head chef at the gastronomic La Voile restaurant within the Imperial Palace Annecy and Vincent Deforce, have been working with local produce for several years now. Their cream and milk come from local farms, while cheese is produced by cheesemaker Alain Michel, based in Annecy and La Clusaz. Meat is selected from local producers and companies whose locally-produced meat is of an exceptional quality: Maison Boudet in La Clusaz, Bresse poultry from the Maison Miéral in the Ain region, Maison JA Gastronomie in the Pays de La Loire, etc.

Fish is lake-caught and includes pike and perch caught in Lake Geneva.

The menu changes with the seasons and depends on deliveries.

“We only work with French, seasonal, organic or responsibly-farmed produce. I prefer to choose French responsibly-farmed produce over Spanish organic goods”, explains Vincent.

… AND EXCEPTIONAL CUISINE The proof is in the pudding. “Each dish includes local produce or a French product combined with outside influences”. Indian spices, ingredients from Mauritius (where he used to live and met his wife) and Japan, (he once worked alongside Laurent Peugeot at the Japaneseinspired eatery, Charlemagne in Burgundy).

A delicate balance which can be found for example in the Dombes duckling fillet, served with a sweet potato mousseline trilogy and the foie gras with Mondeuse (a red wine from Savoie), accompanied by wild blueberries deglazed with balsamic vinegar. The chef is also fond of combining textures; each dish must have some bite to it, be it cooked or raw; such as the beetroot medley, which unites baby glazed beetroot with mousseline and beetroot pickles. Needless to say, the chef is developing ever-more vegetarian dishes, as well as organic, gluten-free and lactose-free offerings. In winter, his enticing seasonal vegetable wok combines multi-coloured carrots with parsnips, celery, leek, garlic, pak-choï, ginger, buckwheat Soba noodles and chopped nori leaves with tangy lime. A delicious cuisine which is as delicate on the taste buds as it is on the planet.

… ET UNE CUISINE D’EXCEPTION Traduction dans l’assiette ? « Chaque plat est composé d’un produit local ou d’un produit français fusionné avec des influences d’ailleurs. » Épices indiennes, ingrédients de l’île Maurice (où il a vécu et rencontré son épouse), du Japon (il a travaillé aux côtés de Laurent Peugeot au Charlemagne, en Bourgogne).

Un juste équilibre que l’on retrouve par exemple dans son filet de canette des Dombes servi avec une mousseline de patates douces en trilogie ou son foie gras à la mondeuse (vin rouge de Savoie) accompagné de myrtilles sauvages déglacées au balsamique. Mais encore ? Une prédilection pour le travail des textures, chaque plat devant apporter de la mâche, du cru et du cuit, telle sa déclinaison de betteraves, qui combine mini betteraves glacées avec mousseline et pickles de betterave. Évidemment, le chef développe toujours plus les plats végétariens, tout comme le bio, le sans gluten et le sans lactose. À consommer sans modération ? Son irrésistible wok de légumes de saison où, en hiver par exemple, se côtoient carottes multicolores, panais, céleri, poireau, ail, pak choï, gingembre avec nouilles Soba au sarrasin et feuilles de nori (algues) ciselées, rafraîchies au citron vert. Une cuisine aussi savoureuse et délicate pour les papilles… que pour la planète.

Chef sommelière de La Voile, table gastronomique de l’Impérial Palace Annecy, Isabelle Mabboux sélectionne une très enviable carte de vins, avec quelque 250 références, et fait la part belle, elle aussi, au local avec 95 % de vins français dont 20 % de vins régionaux. À la carte, une grande majorité de vins en biodynamie, bio et nature, soit des vins vivants et respectueux de l’environnement. Finaliste il y a deux ans au concours de Meilleur Sommelier de France, elle prépare également la prochaine édition du concours de Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) fixée en 2022.

Sa définition d’un bon sommelier ? « Avoir de l’humilité dans la transmission, de la patience et l’envie de découverte. » Son objectif ? « Rester dedans » tranchet-elle, afin d’élargir en permanence son champ d’horizon et les possibilités de son métier. Le savoir-faire à la française ne devrait donc bientôt plus avoir de secret pour cette sommelière trentenaire des plus aguerries.

CÔTÉ VINS WINES The head sommelier at La Voile, the Impérial Palace’s gastronomic restaurant, Isabelle Mabboux, has put together an inviting wine menu, with around 250 references, honouring locally-produced wines with 95% French wines, including 20% regional wines. The menu features primarily biodynamic, organic and natural wines which are spirited and environmentally friendly. A finalist two years ago in the Best French Sommelier competition, Isabelle Mabboux is also preparing for the next edition of the Meilleur Ouvrier de France (MOF) French craftsmen competition, set to take place in 2022.

She defines a good sommelier as, “someone who humbly transmits knowledge, being patient and a striving to discover new things”. Her aim is to “remain focused”, in order to continually expand her horizons and the possibilities of the profession.

French expertise will soon hold no secrets for the thirty-something, seasoned sommelier.

nauguré en 2010 à l’hôtel Au Cœur du Village 5 étoiles à La Clusaz, le premier Cristal Spa n’est autre qu’une référence à l’histoire du fondateur du Groupe PVG, Gaston Pollet-Villard, passionné par les pierres semi-précieuses et dont le premier métier était de les importer… À L’ORIGINE, LES PIERRES SEMI - PRÉCIEUSES C’est dans le massif des Aravis que Gaston Pollet-Villard commence très jeune à ramasser du cristal de roche qu’il transforme ensuite en objets de décoration et commercialise à Chamonix, sous le regard amusé de son père. Fort du succès de ses créations, il décide de poursuivre sa quête des précieux cristaux au Brésil notamment, à Madagascar…

Et c’est en puisant dans ce passé hors du commun qu’il imagine, lors de la construction de son hôtel Au Cœur du Village, un nouveau concept de spa, que l’on retrouve à La Clusaz et à l’Impérial Palace à Annecy, mettant en valeur tant la beauté que la pureté des pierres. A HISTORY OF SEMI - PRECIOUS STONES Gaston Pollet-Villard started to collect rock crystal in the Aravis massif at an early age. He then transformed the crystal into decorative objects and sold them in Chamonix, under the indulgent gaze of his father. On the strength of the success he encountered, he decided to continue his search for precious crystals in Brazil and Madagascar. Drawing on this extraordinary past, he designed a new spa concept during the construction of his Au Cœur du Village Hotel. The concept can be found at Clusaz and at the Impérial Palace in Annecy, and higlights the beauty and the purity of stones. It is a haven of well-being, with a sleek and mineral setting embellished with agate, rose quartz and amber, long preserved by Gaston Pollet-Villard, and which can be found in the washbasins, treatment rooms – bearing the names of crystals – and on the columns in the corridor leading to the spa at the Impérial Palace.

Des séances de 1 h 30 qui associent les bienfaits de la pratique du yoga à l’environnement calme d’un lac et des montagnes, le tout avec un travail des muscles plus intense et une relaxation à-son-comble !

Comment est née l’activité des casinos ?

En se penchant un peu sur l’histoire du jeu, on s’aperçoit qu’il a toujours été présent, quelles que soient l’époque et la civilisation. Le premier casino aurait ouvert en 1626 à Venise. Le « Ridotto » était un espace destiné aux jeux de société et d’argent. Il était réservé aux nobles de la Cité. Petit à petit, le concept s’est développé, principalement dans les villes thermales où les gens fortunés venaient prendre les eaux. La journée, ils prenaient soin d’eux et le soir, venait le moment du divertissement. D’où le développement de ces lieux organisés autour de trois activités indissociables que sont le jeu, la restauration ainsi que les activités artistiques et culturelles. Peu à peu, il a fallu structurer et légiférer. Il a été décidé que les casinos seraient implantés dans des villes classées thermales, balnéaires ou climatiques et dans les agglomérations de plus de 500 000 habitants, qui possèdent sur leur sol une scène nationale.

Qu’est-ce qu’une ville climatique ?

Une ville classée climatique est reconnue pour les vertus de son climat et les bienfaits sur la santé. Il y a un casino à Annecy depuis 1921 parce que la ville bénéficie de ce classement.

Quand l’Impérial Palace a été reconstruit, dans les années 1990, la municipalité a souhaité y installer de nouveau un casino, absent de la ville depuis près de 10 ans suite à la création de l’esplanade du Pâquier.

La commune était persuadée que cela serait un atout supplémentaire pour Annecy, ainsi qu’un avantage économique pour l’Impérial Palace.

En effet, aujourd’hui, c’est grâce à l’activité du casino que l’on peut entretenir un bâtiment comme celui de l’Impérial.

D’ailleurs, la plupart des casinos sont situés dans des lieux historiques.

La préservation de notre patrimoine architectural et culturel est aujourd’hui l’un de nos principaux rôles et nous en sommes particulièrement fiers.

What was the idea behind casinos?

If we look at the history of gambling, we see that it has always existed, in every period and every civilisation. The first casino is thought to have opened in Venice in 1626. The “Ridotto” proposed parlour games and gambling. It was reserved for the city’s nobility. Little by little, the concept developed, mainly in spa towns, where wealthy people came to take the waters. During the day people concentrated on their health and looked for amusement after nightfall. Hence the development of casinos, organised around three activities which cannot be dissociated, namely gambling, dining and artistic and cultural activities. Eventually, structure and legislation became necessary. It was decided that casinos would be built in spa, seaside and climatic towns and in urban areas of more than 500,000 inhabitants, where there was a theatre of national importance.

What is a climatic town?

Climatic towns are recognised for the virtues of their climate and advantages for health. There has been a casino in Annecy since 1921 because the town benefits from this distinction.

When the Impérial Palace was rebuilt in the 1960s, the municipality wanted it to house a casino, something the town had been without for almost a decade, since the creation of the Pâquier Esplanade. The municipality was convinced that it would be an additional asset for Annecy, as well as an economic advantage for the Impérial Palace. Indeed, today it is thanks to the casino’s income that a building such as the Impérial can be upkept.

What’s more, most casinos are built in historic locations. Preserving our architectural and cultural heritage is now one of our main roles and we are particularly proud of this.

Votre activité a été fortement impactée par le confinement lié à la crise sanitaire. Quel bilan faites-vous de cette période singulière ?

La crise liée au Covid nous a obligés à nous adapter et surtout à nous réinventer. Nous avons pris le parti d’installer des parois de séparation en Plexiglas, entre les machines à sous et cela a amélioré non seulement le confort, mais aussi et surtout la sécurité de notre clientèle. Cette période nous a permis de réaliser à quel point nous avions un lien fort avec elle.

Grâce aux réseaux sociaux, nous avons pu conserver ce lien et prendre régulièrement des nouvelles des gens que nous savions seuls. Mes équipes, que je remercie, ont su transformer cette difficulté en opportunité. Comme l’a dit Pierre de Coubertin : « Chaque difficulté rencontrée doit être l’occasion d’un nouveau progrès. » C’est exactement ce que nous avons fait. Finalement, cette crise nous a permis d’améliorer encore la qualité de la relation avec nos clients. Car il ne suffit pas d’avoir une relation, encore faut-il qu’elle soit de qualité.

Your business has been strongly affected by the Covid lockdown. How would you sum up this unusual period?

The Covid crisis has forced us to adjust and to reinvent ourselves.

We made the decision to install Plexiglas walls between slot machines and this has improved not only comfort, but also and more importantly, the safety of our clients. This period has enabled us to realise just how strong our bond is with them. Thanks to social networks, we’ve been able to keep in touch and catch up with people living alone. My teams, who I would like to thank, have transformed this difficult period into an opportunity.

As Pierre de Coubertin once said: “Every difficulty we encounter must be an occasion for further progress”. That is exactly what we’ve achieved.

Ultimately, this crisis has enabled us to further improve the quality of our relationship with our clients. Because it’s not enough to have a relationship, it must be a good one.

The ‘Le Bélier’ Trail is a legendary race in La Clusaz. Since 1989, it has brought mountain lovers together and there is now a winter version called the Bélier Blanc every January.

Festival hors norme qui lance en avant-première la saison des sports d’hiver, le High Five fête ses 10 ans cette année, n’ayant pu les célébrer en 2020 en raison de la crise sanitaire. Aussi, pour cet anniversaire, l’équipe du High Five festival est bien décidée à organiser une édition magique.

En ligne de mire : une soixantaine de films à voir en salle ou en plein air, des concerts, de nombreux spectacles et animations à l’Impérial Palace, des masterclass… Et si on rembobinait ? Le High Five fait aussi sa rétrospective avec un musée éphémère qui retrace l’histoire de ce rendez-vous incontournable des amateurs de glisse.

An exceptional festival which kicks off the winter sports season in style, High Five is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The anniversary could not be celebrated in 2020 due to the health crisis and the High Five festival team is determined to organise a magical edition to mark the event.

The line-up includes sixty films which you can watch in cinemas or open-air, as well as concerts, shows and entertainment at the Impérial Palace, masterclass. Gaston Pollet-Villard a su transmettre son ADN de l’entrepreneuriat à son fils Olivier qui a repris la direction du Groupe en 2009. Avec des hôtels, des chalets, des restaurants, un casino, et même un bowling depuis 2017, le père et le fils sont des entrepreneurs visionnaires qui ont su réunir leurs compétences pour être plus forts.
