Letter from Group Mission Trips

One of the coolest things that can happen to a leader is when years later a person you influenced comes back and says thank you. I was a volunteer Youth Leader for a while, and I must admit I was young and not very good at it. I didn’t use the time I had with my students to really grow their faith. I chose the easy route and tried to have fun with them to make church an OK place to go. I’m still waiting for one to come back and say, “Thank you for teaching me how to shoot a basketball.”

The list of people who influenced my life is fairly typical—coaches, teachers, pastors, parents, supervisors, and friends. It wasn’t the fun times that I think made an impression on me; it was the conversations, the watching them live, and dealing with di cult situations. Some of the situations were serious, like the time my ninth-grade girlfriend broke up with me and I knew I would never love again or even have a reason to get out of bed. I know you’ve had those conversations, and I’m sure, like me, those students made it through just fine.

Today’s students are influenced by people, media, technology, and screens way more than we were when we were their age. It’s hard for adult role models to even wedge our way into their lives. But that is why you do what you do. You are willing to spend the time getting to know your students and helping them make sense out of all the messages coming at them. They need you. You, along with their parents, have the privilege of introducing them to Jesus.

Our theme for Group Mission Trips this year is Influencer. Whether we think so or not, everyone is an influencer in some way or another, your students included. Everything they do is watched by their friends, siblings, and others and they make an impression and have influence. The goal of this year’s program is to help students navigate the negative influences and encourage them to lean into the teachings of Jesus so they use their influence to change their culture, one conversation at a time.

Speaking of time. Sunrise and sunset are dictated by the sun and the moon, but the days, months, and years are all influenced by the birth of Jesus. No one else in all of history has the calendar the entire world follows based on their very existence. Now that is influence.

Nothing is more important than an individual’s personal relationship with God. We are all designed to grow in our faith and understanding of who God is and who we’re created to be. We are passionate about creating an environment for youth to connect their faith with service. We want teenagers to return home with a profound love for Jesus and new eyes to see how God is at work in their every day. We provide intentional times to connect through Scripture, worship, and devotions to promote spiritual growth. Our mission trip experiences are also designed to encourage the organic moments that happen outside of programmed times: the conversations that happen around the dinner table, the relationships formed at project sites, the stories that connect participants and encourage them in their faith.

Investing In The Next Generation

We believe the next generation is made up of influencers, difference-makers, and powerful leaders, and there’s no better time than NOW to invest in our youth. Our mission trip experiences develop teenagers into young leaders by teaching positive character traits, compassion for others, and practical life skills. Through Scripture, service projects, and an opportunity to step outside their own worlds, youth will be inspired and encouraged to follow Jesus in their school, community, church, and world.

Authentic Relationships

As Christians, we are strengthened through unified relationships. One of the greatest opportunities of a mission trip is the chance to meet new people while serving together. Participants build authentic relationships with the people they serve and those they serve with. Strangers become family. Crew members become best friends. Di erences begin to disappear as individuals come together to serve with a shared purpose. It’s amazing to see the depth of relationships that form when participants are united in a common mission and share in the celebration of transformed lives and communities.

We partner with local organizations and ministries to provide meaningful support for their year-round sustainable programs, ensuring our e orts have lasting impact in the communities we serve. There will also be lunch devotions and opportunities each evening for your youth group to process and bond over all that happens each day.

C onfidence

By design, our mission trips teach teenagers to work with many di erent people to serve and accomplish huge tasks. They leave knowing they can do more than they thought possible. They learn to lean on their faith, team members, and leaders. They grow in confidence and self-esteem as they tackle new challenges and realize they can positively influence and change the lives of the people around them.

U nderstanding

Your teens will learn and practice valuable skills in communication, empathy, delegation, and responsibility as they work together with many di erent people in an unfamiliar environment. These skills will serve them well and prepare them for the rest of their lives as they move into college, careers, and adulthood.

Leadership

Your teen will serve in one of six di erent roles on a crew, typically made up of five teenagers and one adult. The adult will intentionally not assume the role of the crew leader. In each role, kids will learn how to listen and understand the rest of the team’s needs, delegate to share the responsibilities among team members, and appreciate how each role plays an essential part in achieving the desired outcome.

P roblem Solving

During a mission trip, participants face many challenges. Your teens are taught to become resourceful and creatively rise to work as a team to solve the problem. We’ve seen it hundreds of times! The first reaction is “We can’t,” but by the end of camp, they leave with a big smile knowing they met the challenges, solved the problems, and grew up just a little more.

Teamwork

Teenagers will engage with their youth group, residents, adult volunteers, and other youth groups. As they embrace a mission trip’s challenges, they will learn the value of being part of a team serving someone in need. Learning to focus on others is a life lesson that will help your young people know they are part of a team, a family, a youth group, and a society made up of others who are not exactly like them.
