Letter from the Executive Director Dear Phelps Community, As we near the end of 2021, I’d like to share with you some of the things we’ve achieved at Phelps this year. Although the challenges of COVID 19 are far from over, I’m happy to report that our COVID admission rate has declined significantly. Throughout the past year and a half, we never lost sight of our most important goal, providing high quality, compassionate healthcare to our community.

I’m proud to announce that Phelps continues to achieve excellence in a variety of service awards. Last year, Phelps achieved the Magnet designation for Nursing and in 2021, we become the first “Age Friendly Health System” within Northwell, and the second hospital in the Hudson Valley to be designated as a “Baby Friendly Hospital”. In addition, Phelps was awarded the Emergency Nurses Association Lantern Award, and for the tenth year in a row we have achieved the Gold Standard in Stroke Care, just to name a few. Phelps continues to transform our physical campus as well, building with an eye to our community’s future needs. We have several large scale construction projects underway. We are adding a high level imaging test (PET/CT Scan) that can help diagnose new and returning cancers. We are also undergoing a major modernization of our Maternal Child Health units. During all of this exciting change, we are working diligently to minimize the impact of construction on our patients. Our beautiful Westchester location and distinctive services and programs really capture the essence of Phelps and our quality patient care experience. Thank you for choosing Phelps. Am I eligible for a lung cancer screening? A lung cancer screening is a quick and effective low-dose computerized tomography (CT) scan that can detect lung cancer and other serious abnormalities. Only 3-5% of persons eligible for a lung cancer screening have an annual lowdose CT scan. Our new regional lung cancer screening program at Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health, and Northern Westchester Hospital is dedicated to enhancing your quality of life through early detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and more deaths are associated with lung cancer than colon, prostate, and breast cancer combined. However, the number of deaths from lung cancer continues to drop due to a reduction in cigarette smoking and advances in early detection and treatment.
Benefits and risks to consider Before receiving a lung cancer screening, consider the benefits and risks. The most significant benefit is detecting lung cancer at an early stage, which can improve your survival rate. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), those who undergo a lung cancer screening have a 20% reduction in their mortality rate. However, a lung cancer screening is a low-dose CT scan of the chest, and one of the risks is radiation exposure.

Preparing for your appointment Before scheduling your appointment, you will need to complete brief screening questions. If eligible, schedule a Shared Decision-Making visit with a Nurse Practitioner and radiology appointment. No preparation is necessary before your screening. You register, lie down on the CT table, and undergo a scan of your chest, which takes about 5-10 seconds. You will receive your results in few days. If the results are negative, we recommend that you come back for another test in a year. If your results are positive, we will discuss next steps.

Introducing our Concierge Program At Phelps Hospital, we’re doing everything in our power to lower barriers to qualitynwh_constellation_02 nwh_constellation_01 healthcare. That is why we’ve implemented our new concierge program to simplify access to care for all of our patients. The Phelps concierge program, through Northwell Health, offers a single point of contact for all community members to our Reflux Center, the Spine Institute, lung cancer screening, telehealth for pain management, and the Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Center. This interdisciplinary model allows direct access to physicians, while providing the opportunity for different providers to best coordinate a patient’s individual care.
“The main goal is to be that single point of contact,” said Erika Larson, a Program Manager overseeing the concierge program at Phelps Hospital, Northwell Health. “Once that initial appointment is made, our concierge service is able to reach back out to our patients and see if they require any follow up. If they haven't had a chance to call back, we can reach out to see if they were advised to schedule any further diagnostic testing.”

If the pain management provider requires any diagnostic testing, such as an MRI or CAT scan, the patient can call the concierge number again to arrange testing and arrange their follow-up appointments. Additionally, the provider can send the concierge service any information needed for them to reach out to the patient. This eliminates any gaps in care and reduces time to procedure.

“The customer service aspect is huge. We definitely treat our patients like they are our own family members, and we want them to feel that,” Larson said. “The patients feel like they're being taken care of.” We want patients to feel like they are being listened to, and they really are given hope that their issues and concerns will be addressed. “Having that single point of contact allows the patient to just focus on reaching out, knowing that there is someone with a familiar voice to answer, that the providers are involved in the program, and everyone is working to get them a timely appointment.”

This sort of concierge service, which originally launched at Phelps in the summer of 2020, is truly unique to the hospital space. While some hospital systems offer similar services, the ability to directly reach several specialists across various disciplines is unique. The Phelps concierge program offers access to numerous specialists for both preventative care or treatment for chronic health issues.

IS A COCHLEAR IMPLANT RIGHT FOR ME? Cameron Budenz, MD ENT Specialist
If you or a loved one is experiencing trouble hearing on a regular basis, it’s important to know you’re not alone. Approximately 15 percent of all Americans experience some sort of trouble hearing—nearly half of all people over 65 years of age live with some degree of hearing loss. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 10 people globally will develop disabling hearing loss over the course of their lifetime. At the Phelps Hospital Speech and Hearing Center, our team of audiologists can work with you or your loved one to diagnose any and all forms of hearing issues. If you are experiencing issues with hearing loss, our team of experts will complete a hearing evaluation to assess the function of your outer, middle, and inner ear. These evaluations can help us diagnose your hearing issues by characterizing the presence, type, location, and severity of your hearing loss. Sometimes, these evaluations will lead our Phelps audiologists to refer you to a physician, as your hearing issues may be a complication of other underlying medical problems. When are hearing interventions needed? In other cases, hearing interventions may be necessary. Although cochlear implants are becoming more commonplace, they are not a great fit for each of our patients with hearing disorders. In fact, hearing aids are still the best fit for most patients. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that nearly 30 million American adults would benefit from a hearing aid; however, among eligible adults aged 70 and older, fewer than one in three utilize them.
While many Americans could benefit from hearing aid technology, cochlear implants are reserved for those in which standard hearing aid technology is not doing enough for their hearing. According to the NIH, over 100,000 cochlear implants have been surgically implanted in American adults since their approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1980s, but this only accounts for approximately 5 percent of the number of people who could benefit from a cochlear implant. What is the difference between a hearing aid and a cochlear implant? Hearing aids work by amplifying sound so that they can be detected by damaged ears. In contrast, cochlear implants work by avoiding the damaged portion of your ear, directly stimulating the auditory nerve. Cochlear implants are not for everyone. A patient must be evaluated for eligibility, and these patients must be highly motivated to learn the device and how to properly process the sounds. Many need hearing and speech rehabilitation programs to get the most out of their implants. Are cochlear implants right for me? The best way to determine if you are a fit for a hearing aid or cochlear implant is to contact the Phelps Speech and Hearing Center. We are perfectly suited to help patients of any age with their hearing issues and needs. We offer early intervention services, hearing aid fitting and dispensing for all ages, and even telehealth services for many of our therapies and tests. Two Bean & Beef Chili – Serves 6 Michelle’s note: Get the most out of your carrot by keeping the skins on—most of the vitamin C, niacin, and phytonutrients are found in the skin. If you don't peel, just remember to scrub well.

• 3 onions, diced • 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 6 carrots, diced • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 ½ pounds 90/10 ground beef • 2 cups low sodium beef stock llation_07 • 2 (15 ounce) cans reduced sodium kidney beans, drained • 1 (15 ounce) can reduced sodium cannellini beans, drained • 3 tablespoons dark chili powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon ancho chili, ground • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, ground 9 • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper, ground • 1 ½ tablespoons cumin, ground • ¼ teaspoon salt • Black pepper to taste

1. Heat canola oil in stockpot over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and carrots. Stir well and cook until onions are translucent, about 5 minutes. 2. Add ground beef. Use a slotted spoon to break apart the meat into small, evenly sized pieces. Cook until the meat begins to brown, about 5 to 7 minutes. 3. Add beef stock and stir to combine. 4. Rinse each can of beans, drain well, and add to pot. Stir well, cover, nwh_constellation_08 nwh_constellation_ and reduce to simmer for 30 minutes. 5. Mix in spices and simmer with cover on for 1 hour. 6. Remove cover, stir, and simmer for the last 30 minutes. Serve immediately or allow to cool before refrigerating.
