Breast Cancer Alliance

Innovative Research Surgical Fellowships Community Outreach • •

There are few words in this world more frightening than “you have cancer,” yet one in eight women and one in slightly more than 800 men will hear that sentence in their lifetime.

Breast Cancer Alliance is one of the most respected and influential breast cancer organizations in the United States. BCA is driven to change the course of this disease through its three pronged, highly-focused mission: Provide research grants focused solely on funding pre-clinical research that drives breakthrough treatments; award fellowships for breast oncology surgeons who improve outcomes; support the screening and diagnostic services for the underserved in the region around its headquarters, as early diagnosis is the overriding factor in survivor rates.

For over 25 years, Breast Cancer Alliance has worked to improve survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by breast cancer through better prevention, early detection, treatment and cure, funding approximately $36 million in grants since its founding.

BCA’s commitment to its mission is unwavering. You can help with this life-saving endeavor.

Why BCA Is Unique

BREAST CANCER ALLIANCE

is one of the most respected and influential breast cancer organizations in the United States. BCA is driven to change the course of this disease through its three pronged, highly-focused mission: Provide research grants focused solely on funding pre-clinical research that drives breakthrough treatments; award fellowships for breast oncology surgeons who improve outcomes; support the underserved in the region surrounding its headquarters with screening services, as early diagnoses make a significant and positive impact on survival rates and outcomes.

EARLY-STAGE RESEARCH

Breast Cancer Alliance solely funds early-stage, innovative, preclinical research not yet eligible for federal grants. By providing scientific venture capital to researchers, BCA bridges the funding gap for potentially life-changing scientific hypotheses from the conceptual stage to reality. This funding identifies bold and pioneering research ideas and propels them forward through two funding vehicles:

EXCEPTIONAL PROJECT (XP) GRANTS

One-year awards recognizing creative, unique research from tenured scientists in the field of breast cancer. The funding provides the catalyst for expansion and exploration of revolutionary new approaches to treating and curing this disease.

YOUNG INVESTIGATOR (YIG) GRANTS

Two-year awards geared toward scientists at an early stage in their breast cancer research career, providing the seed funding to advance their hypotheses to progress to longer term, larger awards. These one-time grants, often overlooked by other foundations, can serve as a catalyst for launching long-term careers.

Surgical Fellowships

Breast Surgery Fellowships:

Breast Cancer Alliance is the only breast cancer charity that provides funding for surgeons to pursue breast oncology fellowships. BCA recognizes that survival rates and quality of life are dramatically improved when patients are in the care of specially-trained breast surgeons.

There have been major advances in surgical technologies including intraoperative imaging procedures, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. These substantial innovations, coupled with enhanced diagnostics and new treatments in chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, and pre- and postoperative therapies, have rapidly changed the approach and sequence of treatment in surgical patients.

Since 2006, BCA has provided 57 grants to Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited institutions, enhancing the front lines of treatment for patients across the country. By fostering the specialized training necessary for surgeons to master these advances, which surpass the experience of general surgeons, these talented young surgeons often move to underserved locations across the United States. They bring their expertise and often launch designated breast centers in those regions for the first time.

Screening and Support Services:

Breast Cancer Alliance eliminates barriers of access to essential breast cancer screening and care in its own community. Breast cancer survival rates are over 90% nationwide due to advances in early detection and improved education. However, these numbers drop substantially in underserved, economically disadvantaged populations.

Our grants cover the costs associated with mammograms, biopsies and other breast cancer-related screening and diagnostics services. Our funding alleviates healthcare disparities for underserved patients in diverse communities in Connecticut and Westchester County, NY. On occasion, these grants are extended to other parts of the country through collaborative partnerships with other institutions.

In addition, BCA creates world-class educational content to raise awareness and provide essential medical information for those without access. These include medical symposia and fireside chat-style meetings and webinars. The recordings of these programs are hosted on our website and shared with colleagues nationwide to be viewed by anyone in need of this information, free of charge.

BCA has funded

543 impactful grants to date: BCA continues to improve the outlook on breast cancer and is proud to have funded so many impactful grants and groundbreaking research. With the uncertainty of federal funding, the need for private philanthropy for the advancement of cures continues to grow.

BCA Annual Luncheon & Fashion Show

This yearly event is BCA’s flagship fundraiser and one of the largest breast cancer fundraisers in the United States outside of New York City. This perennially sold out luncheon, with an anticipated 850 guests this year, exudes hope and possibility and raised $1.2 million in 2023. The attendees are a veritable who’s who crowd in one of the most affluent communities in the country. Offering both in person or virtual attendance options, breast cancer survivors, patients, physicians, media and those that support them assemble for a spectacular afternoon with inspirational speakers, silent and live auctions. The afternoon culminates with a Fashion Week worthy runway show, which celebrates breast cancer survivorship and showcases a premiere fashion house.

Medical Symposia

Breast Cancer Alliance assembles panels of leading experts in the breast cancer arena for education and conversation surrounding prevention, treatment, and advances in the field. Virtual symposia in 2023 featured physicians, scientists and patients from across the US on topics such as triple negative breast cancer, breast cancer incidence, challenges and inequity in the Latina community.

Breast Cancer Alliance endeavors to expand its educational outreach efforts, with an emphasis on filling the void of breast cancer-related resources to those who need them most. In 2017, BCA began hosting medical symposia for women to learn about breast health. The first event, in partnership with JCC Greenwich, focused on BRCA-1/2 mutations, other risk factors, the need for genetic screening and more. Since then, the focus on both the topics and the demographics have shifted, and once the COVID pandemic began, those in-person events moved online. We chose different topics, physicians, field experts and patients or survivors to teach on various subjects related to breast cancer. Today, we host them in person or via livestream, and record them as well, to reach and educate a national audience. In 2022 and 2023 we had a special focus Black and Latina communities. With your help,

Breast Cancer Alliance will confront breast cancer diagnoses in patients under 40, explore survivorship and how best to serve that growing population. Your investment will allow for the development of more educational programming and content through our webinar series, expanded website, targeted social content and expanded written communications, providing a much needed service particularly in those communities in which these resources are inadequate or nonexistent.

Naming Opportunities

Rather than supporting a particular event, you can make a significant gift by directly designating funds to one of Breast Cancer Alliance’s four annual grants categories:

n Young Investigator Research:

This two-year grant is designated for those at an early stage in their research career to help provide seed funding for the research required to apply for larger, longer-term grants, often with the NIH. These grants have launched the careers of those newer to the field of breast cancer.

Grant amount: $125,000

n Exceptional Project Research:

This one-year award recognizes creative, unique and innovative research. Clinical doctors and research scientists whose primary focus is breast cancer are invited to apply. To secure federal funding, a researcher must prove a theory works; BCA creates the critical bridge between novel research and the opportunity to generate preliminary results.

Grant amount: $100,000

n Breast Surgery Fellowships:

Breast Cancer Alliance is the only breast cancer foundation funding Breast Surgical Fellowships. These one-year grants are awarded to Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited institutions to bring more highly skilled, specialty trained breast surgeons to communities across the United States.

Grant amount: $75,000

n Screening and Support Services:

Breast Cancer Alliance offers grants to providers that conduct screening and diagnostic breast cancer services for the underserved: screening and diagnostic mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds and MRIs. The programs must be located in Connecticut and/or in Westchester County, New York.

Grant amount: $5,000-$50,000
