packed with grandmas and grandpas, parents and young kids. As one 5-year-old boy walks to the bathroom, Tommy Cvitanovich, Drago’s

second-generation owner, makes the kid an offer he can’t refuse. “Want to hold a lobster?” Around here, folks call that lagniappe, or a little something extra. It’s one of the defining characteristics of Jefferson Parish, a community that keeps on giving and going beyond expectations. Within moments, little Michael John is holding a live crustacean in his hands. Famous for inventing the restaurant’s delectable charbroiled oysters, Tommy is a true family man working alongside his four kids and 88-year-old mother, Klara, who greets arriving guests, making patrons feel welcome. Jefferson Parish has flora, fauna, food and fun for all ages. Alligators, spaceships and pirate history are here. At the Wetland Education Center and Barataria Nature Preserve, an outdoor stroll highlights the ecosystems of bayous and waterways. Swamp tours offer an up-close look at herons, egrets and alligators. The parish has a life-size mock-up of an International Space Station; Cajun, Creole and fusion dishes; and a town named for Jean Lafitte, the French pirate. There’s something for everyone.

Custom oyster statues stand outside members of Jefferson Parish's Oyster Trail.

Segnette Landing in Gator Town, Westwego, is a good place to get oriented to Jefferson Parish’s seafood bounty. Westbank Expressway leads to The Shrimp Lot, where stalls are operated by fishermen and sell today’s catch. “Mama,” a 78-year-old vendor, smiles as I marvel at Ruthann & Bob’s array of shrimp, whose prices grow with size. “Sure, baby,” she says when I thank her for letting me peer at her goods. Amy’s Seafood, a few stalls down, has been around for 37 years. Here, large purple mesh bags of oysters are stored in a cool back room, away from the sun and ready for shucking. A short walk toward the water leads to Segnette Landing Cajun & Seafood Restaurant. Brothers Joe and Mike Spinatto opened the restaurant near their swamp tour dock. Chef Keith Springman puts his own spin on traditional seafood recipes. On a weekday afternoon, families sit at round tables. Aunts, uncles, grandmas and grandpas, kids of all ages dig in to their food. A noisy group of 20 men gathers for their monthly lunch. They’re the Class of ’71, graduates of an all-boys Catholic high school. We begin with crab dip and toast points, followed by deepfried oysters and crab cakes with roasted seasonal vegetables. A new menu item, the Shrimp Lot, features blackened shrimp, rice and avocado, and a Louisiana side dish called maque choux, made with corn, peppers, onions and cream. Intrigued, I ask our waiter how to pronounce the dish.

“Mock shoe,” he says. I’m from Washington state. I was way off. I am figuratively and literally learning another language while here. After lunch, we continue down the dock for an Ultimate Swamp Adventures tour. Captain Cody, our guide, knows this swamp like the back of his four-fingered hand. He quips about losing his index finger to an alligator. “Are you kidding?” I ask. “No,” he says. “When I was 16, I got between a mama alligator and her babies.” Now in his mid-30s, he shares his passion for nature from the safety of an airboat or a slower-moving pontoon boat, a good

Pastry chef Sage Spicuzza-Young creates napoleons, bread pudding and crème brûlée, and unique desserts like pistachio delight and lemon meringue turnovers. During our visit, her father helps out behind the counter while her mom pitches in up front, another Jefferson Parish family affair. A few blocks away, the Gretna Historical Society preserves the city’s past in a collection of small 19th-century buildings. Exhibits include a blacksmith shop and the David Crockett Steam Fire Company No. 1, the oldest continuously operating volunteer fire brigade in the United States. On parade days, one lucky child gets to ride the Iona Iver, a gleaming brass steam pumper built in 1876 and named for the daughter of the fire company’s charter member.
