Sea to Table

From fine-dining restaurants to grab-and-goes, local seafood, homemade sauces and Southern charm shine in Jefferson Parish.

Inside the market at Kenner Seafood
“Here you go, my baby,”

Trudy Alexander says, placing a torso-sized platter of boiled seafood on the table. No one sitting at the booth is Trudy’s kin, but everyone is Trudy’s baby when they walk into Kenner Seafood.

As the hungry patrons begin to peel the shells from large Gulf shrimp and suck the juice from ruby-red crawfish, Trudy leaves an extra homemade cocktail sauce for the arrangement of fresh oysters on the half shell. In a blink—or in this case, a slurp—the briny bivalves are gone.

Dining in Jefferson Parish is an experience and a literal feast for the senses. Family-owned and local favorites like Kenner Seafood are the roux in the culinary scene gumbo that gives the area its unique flavor.

The not-so-secret ingredient here? Fresh seafood. From finedining menus to local chains and gas station food (known as grab-and-go out East) sea-to-table options shine in Louisiana's largest parish.

Location, Location, Location

Some people are unaware that they’ve been to Jefferson Parish. But if you’ve been to the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, you’ve been here.

Jefferson Parish borders the city of New Orleans on the east and west banks of the Mississippi River and sprawls over 60 miles from the Gulf of America to the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. The brackish water, a combination of freshwater and saltwater, is a chef’s kiss that contributes to the amazing taste of the fresh, local seafood.

Louisiana residents are so passionate about their seafood that they passed a law requiring restaurants to call out imported crawfish or shrimp on dining menus. Eateries that don’t have menus must have a sign that lets the public know if the seafood isn’t from the state. This law passed a few years ago, but in January 2025, the law became more widely enforced and embraced, especially around Jefferson Parish, which prides itself on its numerous seato-table establishments.

“We don’t buy any imported seafood, and we don’t serve any imported seafood,” Joe Spinato says, pointing to the sign in his restaurant that reads, “Supporting our fishermen, we proudly serve Louisiana seafood.”

Spinato’s restaurant, Segnette Landing Cajun & Seafood in Westwego (aka, Gator Town), is also part of the state’s Oyster Trail, which was created to highlight Louisiana's coveted oysters. If you didn’t know, oysters are a big deal around here: Louisiana is the No. 1 producer of oysters in the country—about 12 million pounds are shucked each year.

So why are the oysters so popular? Louisiana oysters tend to be more tender and bigger, thanks to the mix of salinity from the Gulf of America and a water temperature that isn't too warm or too cold. As a result, the oysters never go dormant.

Local Pearls

If all this talk about seafood has made you hungry, the good news is you’re never far from a memorable meal in Jefferson Parish. Here are a few standouts that range from fine dining to casual and shine when it comes to sea-to-table cuisine.

Banh Mi Boys Sandwiches, Metairie

bmbsandwiches com

Drive too fast and you may pass this gas station-adjacent gem down Airline Drive. But once you see the bright, colorful mural at the entrance of Banh Mi Boys Sandwiches, you won’t forget it.

Inside, the sandwich shop is humble, with one register and five stools. The 20-plus sandwich menu, however, is anything but mild. Banh Mi’s sandwiches, also known as Vietnamese Poboys, are bold. Saucy. Forward-thinking. One example: The Bang Bang Shrimp, a favorite, is a hot and sultry bite of fried shrimp tossed in a sweet Thai chili glaze, topped with “Banh Mi basics” like pickled carrots and daikon and cilantro.

The menu items are a mix of Southern and Thai influence. “I like to connect flavors and connect with people,” says owner and chef Peter Nguyen.

Nguyen was born and raised in the area and is the mastermind behind the creative combinations. “I wanted to do something that I could have fun with, and the items took off,” he says.

The restaurant was originally going to be a more traditional approach to the classic poboy, per a request from Nguyen’s parents. (Remember that gas station next door? Nguyen’s parents own it.)

But Nguygen’s passion for putting his own spin on the sandwich eventually won them over, and now, countless locals line up to order Oyster Rock poboys, Cajun Crack Fries and housemade lemonade like the tri-colored kiwi watermelon.

Warning: Posting a selfie with any sandwich in front of the mural will cause a flood of DMs of people wanting to know everything.

Copeland’s, Jefferson copelandsofneworleans . com

When Al Copeland, the founder of Popeyes Louisiana Chicken, wanted to start a full-service restaurant with from-scratch flavors and Southern hospitality, he brought his vision to this Jefferson location on Clearview Parkway. And the rest, as they say, is delicious history.

As you can probably guess, Copeland’s does fried chicken right. The Spicy Herb Fried Chicken is warm and crunchy, and it brings the heat. But the seafood options bring the flavor, too. The hot crab claws are sautéed in garlic and served with crispy dipping toast. The Shrimp & Tasso Pasta entree with Gulf shrimp, Parmesan cheese and cream sauce was Al’s favorite. From fried redfish smothered in crawfish cream to blackened catfish and shrimp, Copeland’s is a staple of this community..

But if you’re thinking about skipping the biscuits to save room— you might want to reconsider. The heavenly carb puffs are delicate on top but substantial enough to soak up homemade sauces or just to devour on their own. Also good to note: Everything is made in-house, including the hot sauce and peppercorn ranch, which may rival all other ranch dressings.

When dining with a group, the Crash & Burn cocktail is a fishbowl of fun, featuring seven liquors and topped with 151. Take a slice of the signature Chantilly Cheesecake with Frangelico sauce, blueberry and strawberry sauce home if you’re stuffed or sauced. You’ll thank us later.

Segnette Landing Cajun & Seafood Restaurant, Westwego Gator Town

segnettelanding com

Owner Joe Spinato didn’t set out to have a restaurant in front of his Ultimate Swamp Adventures location. But after seriously considering the idea with his now-general manager and Chef Keith Springman, Spinato knew they had the right ingredients to create a restaurant that was a destination for both locals and visitors to the swamp.

Judging by the boisterous crowd on a Friday afternoon, he was right. Most days, the restaurant is packed with people—many from the surrounding fishing community. “You’ll find that everyone in here is related or went to school with somebody: The vibe is really nice,” Spinato says.

With views of the Bayou Segnette from the expansive back porch/dining area, the resident-style restaurant serves authentic

The Blackened Trio at Copeland’s

Cajun specialities and, of course, fresh local seafood. On any given day, you may see Corkey Robin of the neighboring Segnette Oyster Company bringing fresh ones to the restaurant, or find Chef Keith talking to fisherman selling their catch at the Westwego Shrimp Lot, just steps from the front entrance.

On the plate, the crab cakes are a favorite. The saucer-sized cakes are big but not on filler. Chef Keith uses corn for texture and a small amount of breadcrumbs before lightly browning each side—no frying here. For crawfish fans, Mrs. Allison's Crawfish Pie combines egg, cream, celery and seasonings in a flaky pastry crust.

Spinato says he has a cup of the restaurant gumbo pretty much every day but admits his favorite dish is Chef Keith’s stuffed peppers. They’re not on the menu, but you can usually find them as a special on Thursdays.

Vincent’s Italian Cuisine, Metairie

vincentsitaliancuisine com

If tablecloths, sconces and mood lighting are your thing, Vincent’s has the elevated menu you’re looking for, even though fine dining wasn’t the goal when owner Vincent Catalanotto first opened in 1989 as a sandwich shop with seven tables.

But Catalanotto had a vision and a deep commitment to bringing people together around fresh and local food. Today, the restaurant is an institution. Most diners have been coming in here for generations. There are even names in the corners of the dining room for those who are especially loyal. Much of the waitstaff has grown up here. The family vibe runs deep.

Unfortunately, Catalanotto passed away a little over a year ago, but the restaurant is still owned and operated by the family, and Catalanotto’s vision is still very much alive. (Fun fact: Many of the menu items were inspired by Catalanotto’s dreams.)

For seafood with an Italian twist, the Parmesan Crusted Jumbo Shrimp appetizer is served on a bed of crispy fried spinach and topped with a beurre blanc sauce for a bite that’s both tangy and sweet. The fried artichoke hearts are topped with crabmeat and shrimp, and the Parmesan Crusted Fresh Fish is a favorite. Seafood aside, the canneloni here is so comforting. Eating this dish feels like giving your tastebuds a hug. The ingredients are simple: Homemade pasta stuffed with ground veal, pureed spinach and Parmesan cheese, baked in Alfredo cream and topped with red sauce. Yes, reservations are recommended.

Barcar, Metairie

barcarbar com

Back in the day, people would stop by railroad passenger cars (bar cars) on the way home from work to grab a drink, snack and socialize.

That’s the same energy Barcar is bringing to Old Metairie. Located next to the train tracks, the interior is designed to feel like a bar car, with ample seating and stools and opportunities to pull up a seat or stand wherever you want.

The menu features shareable items that you wouldn’t exactly associate with bar food (although the late night menu has the staples, like cheese fries, that one needs after midnight). We’re talking Black and Blue Shrimp tossed in a “sassy sauce” with pickled blue cheese and green ranch. (The sauce was named after Danielle Walker, the director of sales. Think sriracha-level spice.)

The Shrimp Tacos are topped with avocado crema and cabbage slaw, and the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice has a yuzu vinaigrette. Even the vegetables are fancy here: Tempura Green Beans are served with a spicy aioli that’s good enough to eat without the beans. That’s probably because all the sauces are homemade here.

The cocktail menu goes off the rails in a good way with ingredients like oolong-infused nitro espresso in martinis and hibiscus and prickly pear in the Jungle Cat.

Although it’s usually not recommended to hang out on top of the train, Barcar’s rooftop overlooks the train tracks and is the only rooftop bar in town. Next level, indeed.

Kenner Seafood, Kenner kennerseafood net

Fried seafood platters with softshell crab and frog legs. Stuffed Italian artichokes. Cajun-style Boudin links filled with rice and crawfish. These are a few of owner Trudy Alexander’s favorite things.

When Alexander opened Kenner Seafood 29 years ago, her mission was to give locals the best-quality seafood possible at the best price. “We’re a neighborhood restaurant in an average income area,” she says. “Ninety percent of our diners are local.” Today, Kenner Seafood is still showcasing the best for the money.

Born and raised in Kenner, part of the charm of the restaurant is the way Alexander and staff interact with the diners. There’s a warm and welcoming vibe. Terms of endearment like “sweetie” and “my baby” go hand-in-hand with bowls of homemade gumbo and beautiful Gulf shrimp. (Side note: Alexander has a “shrimp guy”—the only one she buys from—which means she knows exactly where they’re from.)

“We’re very friendly here—we want to make people feel at home,” Alexander says.

In addition to the dining area, there’s a market in the front of the restaurant. Blackboards hang above the register with weekly specials and seafood prices. A large display shows off crab and other seasonal seafood to the left.

And when you’re ready to leave, a “Take care, my baby,” as you go.

The bar area at Barcar

From the clear waters of Lake Pontchartrain to the east and west banks of the meandering Mississippi River to the shores of the Gulf of America, around here, water is the tie that binds.

Making uneasy eye contact with a lone gator in the Lafitte Swamp

Ifirst visited Jefferson Parish in April 1988, ostensibly to introduce my infant son to his maternal grandfather, who lived in Metairie. As a student ornithologist, I couldn't wait to explore the swamps, forests and coastal lands that comprise so much of the Parish.

I was not disappointed, hitting the fabled spring “fallout” of migrant songbirds on Grand Isle, a day I’ll never forget that yielded over 100 species sighted, 74 of which were “lifers” I’d never seen before.

I’ve recently returned to Jefferson Parish, this time to pursue outdoor adventure.

Jefferson Parish encompasses a vast and diverse geography stretching from the Mississippi’s West Bank and the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline to the Gulf of America’s barrier islands. The 665-square-mile area comprises more water than land, a series of bayous, wetlands and lakes that, when explored, offer an outdoor recreational paradise.

An Airy Boat Ride

Like many people my age, I watched Gentle Ben, the late 1960s TV series, and was fascinated by the airboat, a flat-bottomed vessel propelled by airflow, ideal for bayou and marsh navigation. The skipper for my own Gentle Ben experience is Airboat Adventures in Lafitte. My mission: to spot some alligators and, with childlike excitement, to experience the enjoyment of an airboat ride through the Parish’s offshore maze.

Six passengers settle into the padded bleacher-style benches as the captain fires up the giant fan, eight feet in diameter, and

idles away from the outfitter’s dock toward Lake Salvador. The airboat’s shallow draw, ideally suited for this lake with its six-foot depth average, allows us to dip into narrow channels and, 10 minutes later, shimmy onto a muddy shoreline where a five-foot alligator appears to be waiting for us, at least until a seven-foot gator displaces our original host.

As evidenced by chats with my fellow airboat goers, gators draw visitors to swamp tours. Rare is the opportunity to witness an apex predator, queen of all she surveys, this up close and personal. Toss in as many as 2,000 teeth over a lifetime, a monumental conservation success story and, at a whopping 3,000 pounds per square inch, the animal kingdom’s strongest bite, and it becomes obvious what all the buzz is about: Gators are cool.

There’s plenty more to see here beyond the dozen or so gators basking on banks and swimming in the shallows, beginning with a gorgeous setting suitable for a Tennessee Williams play. Like a sultry Streetcar Named Desire set, Spanish moss drips in dialog with bald cypress trees, the latter’s buttressed bases as iconic to the Louisiana swamp as its reptilian inhabitants.

Disc Golf and Traditional Golf Coexist

Wildlife viewing is my jam. However, when exploring an area, I like to balance nature immersion with human-powered activities, whether on a bike trail, boardwalk or, as I discovered in Parc des Familles, one of America's premier disc golf courses. Seattle, my hometown, is famous for outdoor recreation. Still, we don't have a Parc des Familles, a destination that satisfies every age, be it getting soaked on the splash pad, pedaling upon the five-mile

Sunlight paints an ever-changing canvas in the bayou

single track or a flowy mountain bike trail or tossing a disc into a basket. Whatever your genertion adjective may be, this park has you covered.

“People find serenity here,” says Parc Superintendent John Braswell, who’s from the Lafitte Bayou. "What they don't realize is how many other people are finding serenity in the park at the same time they are here.”

To Braswell’s point, we discover an octet of disc golfers deep in the cypress forest. Led by two experienced players, this crew hailing from the Midwest was chomping at the bit to play this 18-hole course. I'm a rabid traditional golfer, but I totally get the appeal of disc golf: launching drives down tree-lined chutes and bending the spheres around natural obstacles before caging the putt. No greens fees are required.

What is required is fuel of the human kind. A round of disc golf really makes you hungry. Restaurant des Familles, a familyrun establishment that resembles an Acadian-style house that is perched so close to the bayou that gators lounge below the deck, was my filling station.

“We may not eat as healthy here as y’all do out west,” my server states unapologetically after learning I'm from Seattle, “but we sure eat good.”

I replace my West Coast go-to salad order with a local’s in-theknow order of red beans and catfish, the first of several culinary staples I’ll tick off during my stay.

I'm eager to ask my disc golf-playing mates back home if they know the Parc des Familles course, which will soon host a professional national tournament. I’ve already raised the envious ire of my regular golf foursome by name-dropping TPC Louisiana.

Like a sultry Streetcar Named
Desire set, Spanish moss drips in dialog with bald cypress trees, the latter’s buttressed bases as iconic to the Louisiana swamp as its reptilian inhabitants.

(The only thing better than playing a PGA Tour stop course is bragging about it back at my municipal course.)

Of course, karmic payback awaits at the first tee when I quickly discern that TPC doesn’t stand for “Tournament Players Club” but rather “Try Prayer Crai.” When stretched to 7,400-yards, this swamp monster set among 250 acres of wetlands is not designed for the feeble of drive, wayward of approach or frail of putting stroke. Not to worry; five tee box options and excellent conditions provide a ton of fun for most handicaps.

“Chipping” toward the basket on the Parc des Familles disc golf course
Racing into the lead at NOLA Motorsports Park

A different track, with surfaces even speedier than TPC Louisiana greens, awaits one mile away at the NOLA Motorsports Park. Families and friend groups will find an outstanding kart racing track and miniature golf course at Throttle & Swing. The entertainment center also houses a bar, café and video arcade.

Only in Louisiana

Like finding your golf ball hidden in the reeds just off the fairway, pure joy awaits diners who pull off US-90 and enter a nondescript white clapboard building. I’d love to claim I discovered Mosca’s Restaurant, but the James Beard plaque on the wall suggests otherwise. Regardless, my spaghetti and meatballs are delicious, the oysters sublime and the ambiance inside as free of pretense as an “only in Louisiana” dining destination can be.

Similar to Mosca’s, I wasn’t prepared for what I’d find when I visited Gretna the next morning. Gretna is a West Bank town infused with equal parts historical legend and quaint Southern charms, like the live oaks with limbs that stretch across the community green (and which are magnificently illuminated at Christmas).

The McDonoghville historic district is considered Jefferson Parish’s oldest neighborhood. It is a pastoral tapestry of shotgun and camelback houses interspersed with several charming independent cafès, boutiques and restaurants. Like its namesake, Gretna Green, Scotland, the West Bank enclave was once known for quick elopements.

I assumed my visit to the Gretna Historical Society would consist of a casual lecture featuring historical facts and a modicum of folklore. However, the original blacksmith shop remains out the White House’s back door, as does a home furnished with late 19th-

century domestic materials, a gallery building and the Louisiana Fire Museum, where I find America’s last remaining 1876 Gould Steam Fire Pumper, a gorgeous contraption.

After a golden-fried catfish poboy at Gattuso’s Neighborhood Restaurant, I head to the Barataria Preserve Visitor Center to meet Jenna Rockett, supervisory park ranger for Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Unlike elsewhere around the Parish, I possessed a strong sense of what I’d see in the preserve, having visited previously, albeit almost four decades ago. I didn’t anticipate observing a quartet of alligator hatchlings however, their backs crossed with orange stripes, ambling around beside the boardwalk.

“That throaty belch you hear is them letting their mother know their location,” Ranger Rockett informed us. “My guess is she’s very close, perhaps even under us.”

We locate the mama gator about 100 yards away, a sign, we learn, that these yearlings, who may remain with their mother for up to three years, are flaunting their independence. One warning call from her offspring and she’d come running.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

I couldn’t wait to pursue my favorite hobby: Ornithology (a.k.a. twitching, birding or birdwatching). My species list today allowed me to observe yellow bolts of northern parula and prothonotary warblers among the river birch and silver leaf maple leaves. I hear a red-bellied woodpecker call from the distance. Pig frogs, butterflies and diverse flora indicate that, for a nature enthusiast, this fecund swampland habitat never fails to delight. Among my favorite natural environments I've visited globally, I could spend days exploring Jean Lafitte National Park’s varied ecosystems.

Like seeing resident warblers, I hope to witness one other Southern specialty, the afternoon thunderstorm, before my visit ends. I’m in luck. A tempest builds brilliantly during my walk on the Bucktown Marsh boardwalk, a 1,000-foot trail that skirts the Lake Pontchartrain shoreline. I’m determined to fight the wind and rain, as is a black-crowned night heron gripping its railing perch 10 feet away. I eventually relent and take flight to Deanie’s Seafood, a Bucktown institution, where I follow crab balls and charbroiled oysters with crawfish étouffée.

Having eaten “good" for one more meal, I step outside beneath the gunmetal sky, fully satiated from my menu of outdoor adventures in and along the water in Jefferson Parish.

Bucktown Marsh Boardwalk is a wetland restoration success story
