Explore a Vibrant History

A series of engaging destinations captures Grapevine’s fascinating heritage. BY

In the 180 years of Grapevine’s existence, the city has transformed from a picturesque collection of vast fields to a vibrant hub of great food, amazing people and seemingly endless activities. Grapevine celebrates its history every day, thanks to a collection of museums and destinations that capture key moments in the Grapevine story.

The Settlement to City Museums are a time machine back to the 19th century. For instance, in the Donald Schoolhouse, you

can see the genesis of Grapevine’s modernday school district. This original frontier schoolhouse is where students learned the agriculture skills they would later use to help Grapevine grow into a thriving community of farmers and early entrepreneurs.

Similarly, the Keeling House Museum pulls back the curtain on Grapevine life in the late 1800s. Inside, you’ll find artifacts from the first days of the fire and police departments, alongside a collection of personal items owned by Mayor William

D. Tate. Tate’s multiple mayoral tenures date back to the early 1970s, giving you the opportunity to walk through multiple decades of Grapevine history. The Keeling House Museum also contains a classic, functional printing press—a nice complement to the Cotton Ginners Museum, which rounds out this collection of engaging exhibits. At the latter, you can find an interactive showcase of how the cotton gin worked, thereby transporting you back to the days when cotton was king on the Grape Vine Prairie. After you return from your trip to the hallowed frontier days, here are some more Grapevine museums you and your loved ones will enjoy.

GRAPEVINE HISTORICAL MUSEUM

From wedding dresses to musical instruments and detailed storyboards illustrating the city’s heritage, this museum is a veritable treasure trove of historical artifacts. And like all great museums, the Grapevine Historical Museum immerses you in the daily lives of the people it features. Plus, as a nice bonus, there’s an interactive exhibit featuring Mayor William D. Tate sharing his personal story of growing

experience that reveals the evolution of a beautiful, global art form. Visits are by appointment only, and you won’t want to miss these stunning, intricate creations.

LONE STAR HI-RAILERS MODEL TRAIN EXHIBIT

Nestled in a historic Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey baggage car, this exhibit is a favorite of train enthusiasts from throughout the southern U.S. Here, you’ll find an intricate layout of the City of Grapevine as it was during the days when active railroads crisscrossed the country as our main source of transportation. Detailed model trains travel this layout, giving each viewer a glimpse at the three-rail trains that are a symbol of classic Americana. What’s more, Grapevine is host to the annual Traina-Palooza: a meet-and-swap for model train enthusiasts from across the country.

WALLIS BUILDING

This gorgeous historic building is the perfect destination to round out the list. In the late 19th century, the famous Wallis Hotel was the place where traveling salesmen and agricultural entrepreneurs laid their heads while traveling through North Texas. These days, this replica captures the magic and history of that historic hotel, while also housing Messina Hof, a premier winery with more than 40 wines on tap. It’s the perfect place to host your next event or sample a delicious wine amongst luxurious trappings.

Welcome to Grapevine, the Christmas Capital of Texas®! Each year, Grapevine comes alive with the spirit of Christmas in a way that would multiply the heart size of even the grinchiest Grinch. Featuring millions of lights and more than 1,400 events in 40 days, Grapevine has undoubtedly earned its official designation as the Christmas Capital of Texas. Only one question remains: Where will you begin your Christmas adventures?

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

You’ll want to mark your calendars for the Carol of Lights , when downtown Grapevine officially comes alive with the magic of Christmas. Traditionally held the Monday before Thanksgiving, Grapevine Mayor William D. Tate flips the switch, and the Christmas Capital of Texas comes to life with millions of lights along Historic Main Street. During the Carol of Lights, thousands of guests enjoy live performances, delicious food from vendors and Main Street restaurants and photos with live reindeer.

Experience Grapevine’s annual Parade of Lights, the largest lighted Christmas parade in all of North Texas. On the first Thursday of each December, civic groups, students and businesses from across the city compete to see who can bring the best, most festive float to the parade in downtown Grapevine.

If you’d like something a bit more interactive, look no further than the North Pole Express. Each year, Grapevine visitors can board the Grapevine Vintage Railroad’s authentic 1920s-era coaches for a unique train excursion featuring Christmas sing-

alongs, festive characters and a photo op with Santa. North Pole Express tickets typically go on sale in July, so plan your visit early. And make sure to stop by the North Pole Neighborhood Store to shop for special Christmas surprises and treats.

Both the Gaylord Texan Resort and Great Wolf Lodge offer luxurious digs and their own take on the Christmas spirit. Lone Star Christmas at the Gaylord will include the resort’s annual ICE! exhibit, where a team of 40 artisans from Harbin, China, have carved more than two million pounds of ice into beautifully impressive ice sculptures all designed for a special Christmas theme. Previous years’ themes included “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Frosty The Snowman” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.” The Gaylord also offers Christmas-themed cuisine at its upscale eateries with literally acres of decorations and hundreds of

activities, while the Great Wolf Lodge boasts its unforgettable Snowland attraction: a bountiful collection of Christmas trees, family-friendly activities and snow showers in the lodge’s on-site water park. Despite his busy winter schedule, Saint Nick makes plenty of time to visit Grapevine before the big day. Case in point: Sea Life Grapevine Aquarium boasts an underwater winter wonderland. The attraction’s aquatic dwellings light up with festive decorations, and a scuba-diving Santa lets you know if you’re on the “Naughty” or “Nice” list. Beginning the day after Thanksgiving, be

sure to visit Elf Adventure at Grapevine’s Settlement to City Museums. Here, the kids will be able to create handmade projects like a snowman tassel ornament out of cotton or a wooden Christmas ornament. Or, level-up your ornament-making skills by creating your own hand-blown glass ornament at Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Gallery Then cap off the night by ice skating on the Texas-sized rink on Peace Plaza just outside Harvest Hall. Perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy a classic Christmas movie like Home Alone, Elf or It’s a Wonderful Life. Throughout December, all of those and more

WHERE TO SPOT SANTA

In addition to Scuba Santa, you can find ol’ St. Nick posing for photos in the North Pole Neighborhood of Historic Main Street: a scenic Christmas setting near the train depot that you simply can’t miss (literally; it’s quite big.) The Big Man also makes appearances on the North Pole Express, as well as the Gaylord Texan Hotel and Resort, Grapevine Mills, Great Wolf Lodge, Bass Pro Shops and at the North Pole General Store on Main Street.

are screening at the Palace Theatre: a cozy, art deco movie theater that screens classic films all year long, as well as hosts plenty of Christmas-themed live entertainment, such as The Texas Tenors and Kraig Parker.

And if you’re in vacation (or staycation) mode, Grapevine’s gorgeous options make it a wonderful life indeed. Look no further than the Hometown Christmas Exhibit, housed at the Tower Gallery inside the Grapevine Convention & Visitors Bureau Headquarters. This is Americana at its finest—it’s as though you are in a Norman Rockwell painting. Stroll past various vignettes of families preparing their homes for Christmas, complete with sights and sounds of the holiday season.

You and your family can also visit a slice of idyllic history at historic Nash Farm, a farmturned-museum that offers a Victorian-style gift workshop starting in early November. You can get a head start on some homemade

CLASSIC CHRISTMAS DATES

Calling all lovebirds: Whether you’re celebrating years of marriage or just beginning to know your partner, the wealth of spirited event options available to you

makes Grapevine a must-visit destination during November and December (and even January—more on that in a little bit). For starters, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Grapevine’s Historic Main Street. This is the beating heart of the Christmas Capital of Texas, and it’s full of enough locally owned shops, winery tasting rooms and exquisite eateries to satisfy practically any palate. For a special treat, visit Dr. Sue’s Chocolate and experience the velvety hot

chocolate flavors and handmade chocolate creations. After you’ve wined and dined with your date, take a stroll along the city’s Historic Main Street, where the multitude of twinkling lights and festive decor create an unrivaled winter wonderland. You may be tempted to shop in one of the many boutiques lining the street or board one of the popular adults-only Christmas Wine Trains . They are so popular, in fact, that seats typically fill up quickly. These 1920s locomotives are decked out with lights, tinsel and all the delightful decor you could dream of, creating the perfect setting for you and your date to munch on hors d’oeuvres and sip fine Texas wine.

Sometimes it may be fun to have some spirits to get you into the holiday spirit. The Holly Jolly Bar at Harvest Hall’s Third Rail is best summed up by Director of Operations Mitch Johnson as, “kitschy, over-the-top craziness.” That’s a description you need to see to believe.

The lights along Grapevine’s Historic Main Street District stay on through early January, and several events also remain active and open. After all, this is where the true spirit of Christmas resides full-time.

This is GrapeFest, an annual celebration of all things fruit of the vine, and it's an internationally renowned tradition that captures the heart and soul of this vibrant community. Through the Grapevine

The Urban Wine Trail celebrates the City’s storied culture and rich history.

You may not think wine when you think of Texas, but believe it or not, Texas is the fifth-highest wineproducing state in the U.S. Grapevine, and its central location in the DFW Metroplex, has long served as the epicenter of Texas wine outside of the Texas Hill Country, where most of the state’s wine is produced. Grapevine features eight winery tasting rooms along its Urban Wine Trail. Most are located on Historic Main Street or close by, where visitors can try robust reds and crisp whites in addition to charcuterie, tapas and other house-prepared menu items. Here’s a quick guide to tasting wine the Texas way in Grapevine.

A TASTER’S DELIGHT

Take a stroll to sample a variety of vintages throughout Grapevine. Located in historic buildings, turn of the century homes and a French-style chalet, you’ll find a variety of tasting rooms and experiences to suit any palate.

Bingham Family Vineyards opened its first winery tasting room in Grapevine, and it has been a popular spot ever since. Cliff and Betty Bingham founded their winery in 2002 in the High Plains region of Texas, and 100% of their wines are Texas-grown and produced. Some of the local favorites you’ll find at Bingham include “Cloudburst,”

a white wine that features crisp acidity and flavors of green apple and hay, and “Dugout,” a red wine featuring 100% Texas-grown Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo and Cabernet Franc.

Bull Lion Winery has been a working ranch for more than 25 years, primarily as a Registered Red Angus and Performance

Paint Horse operation. In 2010, they began a new adventure in the vineyard and wine business, even though their families in Italy have been growing wine grapes for more than 100 years. This family tradition continues today near Chalk Mountain, Texas, producing Old World wines from 100% Texas grapes. Featured wines include Texianti, Malbec, Trebbiano and Tempranillo.

Housed in the historic Dorris Brock family home built in 1874, Cross Timbers Winery is located on the northern end of Main Street. Set amongst a beautiful farm-like setting with an elegant patio, beautiful shade trees and a barn that is perfect for special events, Cross Timbers Winery offers a delicious array of wines for guests to try. Try the Cross Timbers Sangiovese, a High Plains-grown wine with

hints of strawberry, orange peel and plum fruit flavors with violet and cinnamon on the spice. Or try the Cross Timbers Grapevine White, featuring a blend of Roussanne, Viognier, Chenin Blanc and Muscat. This wine pairs nicely with spicy foods, such as Tex-Mex or barbecue.

A staple in town since 1993, Delaney Vineyards is a go-to for weddings and corporate events, but they also know how to treat a visitor with a glass of craft wine and a serving of Texas hospitality. The French chateau-inspired building creates an old world feeling with a Texas twist. Tastings, special events and more allow wine aficionados and those just discovering Texas wines to enjoy this amazing venue. A retail shop is also onsite. Some of the most popular selections include Cynthiana, Muscat Canelli and Three Daughters.

Grape Vine Springs Winery has been a fixture on Historic Main Street for more than 20 years. The winery has more than 30 wines in production, many of which are medal winners from national and international competitions. Wine tastings as well as wine

by the glass and by the bottle are available daily. Popular wines include Rodeo Red (black cherry-infused Pinot Noir), Stockyard Peach (peach-infused Chardonnay) and Decadence dessert wines. Most wines are 100% pure varietals. The winery also offers the Night Watchman Ghost Tour, a walking tour through Downtown Grapevine. The tour is available most Friday and Saturday nights. Visit Landon Winery to explore the spectrum of Texas-grown varietals. Bob and

Katie Landon entered the winery world in 2005, creating one of the fastest-growing wine operations in the United States. This is not your five-sips-and-out-the-door tasting room experience. Visitors can select from over two dozen varieties and blends, including the “15 Anniversary,” an exceptionally blended cabernet sauvignonsyrah available in a Texas-sized magnum. And don’t miss the Wine-A-Rita in peach, sangria or swirl.

You’ll enjoy this lunch- or dinnerincluded experience, which stops at three of Grapevine’s tasting rooms. All fees and tips are included in one price. Messina Hof Winery, one of the most highly regarded and awarded Texas wineries, is a family-owned business that has been crafting Texas wines for over 40 years. Featuring more than 50 wines from 28 different varietals, favorites include Private Reserve Papa Paulo Port, Private Reserve Cabernet Franc and Blanc Du Bois. Be sure to check out their Wine on Tap and all the unique wine accessories they offer. Among the oldest wineries in Texas, Messina Hof will celebrate its Golden Anniversary in 2027 as a pioneer in Texas estate-grown grapes.

As a prime Texas winemaker, Sloan & Williams is not looking to mimic wine producers from other regions; rather, they are making their mark by producing wines that have specific notes and characters only found in this Texas region. Everyone has their passions; at Sloan & Williams, theirs is wine. They believe the process of turning grapes into wine is more than a science or a production— it’s an art. In Texas, they source their grapes from the Texas High Plains AVA and the Texas Hill Country AVA.
