The unique “Feline Fantasy Competition” will be held in the adjacent ring area, and in the afternoon, the ever popular “Creative Challenge Competition” will take place. So, set aside time to enjoy these elaborate pet styling fabrications with color and sculpture limited only by the amazing imaginations of the individual stylists! COMPETITORS: Entries will be limited due to the ring size in our venue. Send your entries in early. Only competition and demo dogs will be allowed at the show. Once again, we are featuring some of the country’s top professionals presenting seminars throughout the show hours. Classroom seminars and demonstrations will fill the weekend with quality education. FRIDAY

Brusher Bather Certificate Program

Y

Teri DiMarino

our ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from being “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the finished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. The bathing room is where most stylists started Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must first know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surprisingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wannabes”, seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will benefit from this day-long program with tips on equipment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to finding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE AND HOW TO USE THEM From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri covers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an effort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “These techniques and tools will make the finished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be also discussed. DEMATTING… IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE Everyone has a technique for dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time-consuming, hair-splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri examines the most common and effective products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up. WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES??? SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a INTERGROOM 2015

“groomers-eye” view of the stuff we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expendable items but what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? (Those scary words are techno-speak for vitamin E, vitamin D and simple table salt, often found in many grooming products.) Getting the Most Out of Your Bathing and Drying Time Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products, thoroughly clean and then dry the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques. This program is six hours long and is included in the Do-It-All admission or can be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

WEEKEND TOPICS SATURDAY DAYTIME AKC Bichon Class Cheryl Purcell This six hour AKC Grooming Certificate Course will focus on the history, physiology and temperament of the bichon, and then end with a demo of a breed standard grooming. The course is designed to give groomers an in-depth understanding of bichons to better serve the needs of the dog and client. This class is a great addition to your grooming association certification, or the perfect opportunity to be introduced to the world of continuing education. The AKC will mail a frameable certificate to everyone attending the course. A Wonderful Wheaten Diane Betelak Diane will demonstrate how to trim the popular Wheaten Terrier correctly.

She will show you how to set lines using snap-on combs and blades while still keeping that wonderful Wheaten profile. This trim can be kept long or shortened up depending on the lifestyle of the owner. Products vs. Cats Mary Oquendo In this seminar, Mary will familiarize the groomers with information needed to make informed decisions regarding typical products found in the grooming shop and their short and long term effect on cats. In addition, Mary will cover ingredient labeling, MSDS, and the truth behind the term “cat-safe”. Looking Glass Joe Zuccarello Joe is the Gordon Ramsey of the pet industry. Yep, just like Chef Ramsey, Joe has a knack for changing your perspective to look at your business through your customers’ eyes, recog-

nizing flaws, removing daily obstacles, improving your image and your salon’s appearance, and identifying money you are leaving on the table. If you are working harder than you ever have, but are not making any more money… there is a reason and usually it’s YOU. Be brave and take a look at what you think you are doing, who you think you are versus what your customers think you are doing and who they think you are. Sometimes we need someone to point this out to us before we can see it ourselves. Get new customers, keep existing customers, and grow your business by seeing an accurate reflection in the looking glass. The Groomer - “The First Line Of Defense” Dr. Cliff Faver The focus of this seminar is the important role the groomer plays in the health of the animal. Groomers typically

WEEKEND TOPICS see the pets more frequently and can evaluate (in the bathing process especially), the pet more thoroughly than the veterinarian can in a routine exam. He will also explain how to build a professional relationship with a local veterinarian. The World Of Shears Randy Lowe This program will be devoted to Shears. Should you buy Stainless, high carbon, cast aluminum, ceramic or a combination? And what about “hot dipped”, cast or stamped? Learn how a shear works, ergonomic factors, finishes and sharpening techniques in this all-inclusive visual program. You will learn what you can do at home, but you will not be actually working on equipment

in this class. Springer Show Trim Tammy Siert Tammy will demonstrate how to groom an English Springer Spaniel for the show ring using carding, stripping, and thinning shear techniques. She’ll discuss how to properly prepare the coat giving bathing and drying techniques to help achieve a great finished product. All of these helpful hints can be applied to the everyday pet trim we all see in our shops. Creating the Ideal Grooming Salon Teri DiMarino Teri will take you on a tour from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall in the construction of a new, state of the art, grooming salon that maximizes space and profits. Highlights will include the fine art of setting up a big salon in a small space by using time and labor-saving equipment, effective storage by applying the “art” of utilizing “vertical square footage”. WEEKEND TOPICS Breed Standard Terminology Defined Kim West Join Kim West for an intricate dissection of the AKC glossary of terms for Breed Standards. Together, we will conquer this language barrier. By being able to accurately assess attributes, as well as identify faults in order to execute corrective grooming, you have to know how a breed should be built in order to groom it properly. You must understand correct in order to perform correct. Learning this skill will elevate your grooming to a higher level, as well as elevate loyalty within your clientele. You don’t want to miss this powerfully enlightening hour! Let’s Groom The Schnauzer Diane Betelak The schnauzer is one of the most popular of the terrier breeds. Knowing just how to apply lines to the signature pet is something that Diane knows very well. Grooming the Geriatric Pet Teri DiMarino The years have not been kind to your client. What was once a bouncing, friendly, face-licking furball has turned into a fragile, senile curmudgeon with breath that could stop a train. His arthritis has him in almost constant pain & all he wants is to be left alone. But his hair still grows and the owner will trust him with no one else, as you’ve been grooming him since he was a puppy. As the owner and operator of a salon in South Florida, Teri specialized in the geriatric pet (AND owner) and became adept in handling situations unique to this type of client. She will examine handling techniques to avoid the anxiety often associated with the older pet and help you recognize and deal with health related problems and the owners denial of their pets age and condition.

Shear Control Pam Lauritzen In this timeless presentation & demonstration, Pam will share her proven ergonomic methods of choosing and using shears that will improve your scissor technique while assuring neuromuscular health. Included is: Developing the perfect grip, blade & point angles, guide blade scissoring, and choosing the right shear for you. Be sure to attend this outstanding program before purchasing another shear.

Putting Personality In Shih Tzu And Mixed Breed Heads Sue Watson Do you have problems getting that right look on the little characters you are working on? If so, Sue will show you some different ways to capture the best look for the dog you are having difficulty with. “Sometimes when you see the same dogs all the time you tend to put the same face on all of them, but they are all different and should look that way,” says Sue. Come see if you can learn something new or even add suggestions to others.

Your Business Runs On Shampoo Streamlining Your Grooming Process With Liquids! Dave Campanella Let’s be frank. Your business runs on shampoo, and “Tub Time” is the most critical phase of the grooming process.

INTERGROOM 2015

The liquid products you use definitely impact your business’ success. There are products out there that do most of the hard work for you. However these typically get overlooked, even though they save a ton of time, and time is money for grooming professionals. In fact, you may have some of these products in your salon right now staring you in the face! We will reveal these, what key ingredients to look for, discuss pH, the myths behind dilution rates, breakthrough conditioners, whiteners, deodorizers, facial washes and more. Most importantly we will reveal the best methods for using these products and how to actually “do more with less”. A fresh perspective and “must see” for any salon owner, mobile business or start-up! Snap-On Combs And Time Saving Shortcuts Linda Easton Linda will show you how to use Snap-On combs and other techniques to speed up your grooming while improving your finished product. Let Snap-On combs help you learn about shape and style, while reducing your grooming time. She will also explain how using thinning shears can make grooming easier in achieving smooth finishes on terriers, sporting dogs and personality trims. Handstripping Is Not Just For Terriers! Pam Lauritzen In this theory and practical skills presentation, Pam will focus upon basic handstripping tools, techniques, and methods and will help you to understand how to safely and efficiently use them. If you’d like to learn the difference between carding, stripping, plucking, breaking, rotating and staging a coat, as well as practical, easy maintenance, revenue-generating handstripping techniques and methods that will improve the quality of your pet trims — then don’t miss a minute of this power-packed presentation and

WEEKEND TOPICS “hands-on” demonstration . . . Also “Shed Control” tools, techniques and methods will be discussed and demonstrated during this “Popularly Demanded” seminar! Tear Stains - The Permanent Solution Kim West Some famous words every day in our profession: “Can you get rid of all that brown/ red stuff?” Yes, there are products that temporarily remove tear stains, but how much loyalty would you gain from empowering your clients, arming them with knowledge of better care for their family member, helping cure the problem and saving them time and money? Kim will teach you how to ask the correct questions, pointing them to a permanent solution for their family member. This is a business

building, problem solving, enlightening, whitening seminar you don’t want to miss! Poodle In A German Trim Diane Betelak It’s not just shaving the ears and tail! We will discuss getting the hair off fast while still leaving some style and shape, because this is how we earn our living, balance and corrective sculpturing because not all poodles are built the same and taking the tail and ears down changes the profile. Diane will use comb attachments, scissors and other tools to show you how to create a poodle that will “WOW!” your clients. Airedale Terrier Lisa Leady Lisa will demonstrate the proper breed standard trim for the Airedale

terrier pet trim. This seminar will help you achieve a natural look to the dogs coat and proper head and eyebrows. Learn how to achieve that “keen expression” terrier should have. Biz Bits Cheryl Purcell There are so many potential seminars that don’t take place at a trade show simply because they wouldn’t fill up an hour. Now, Cheryl will take several important business related topics and mash them all into one seminar. This fun, fast paced class will cover all sorts of business tips, tricks and tidbits. Cheryl is a straight shooter who has no problem getting to the point to give you a seminar that will be jam packed with great business building information.
