SPRING 2019 DEALER WORKBOOK

Enter Faith Dickey and her partner Mike Blackwill. Both are highly accomplished professional slackliners and at this particular time of year, they live together in a Ford Econoline van not too far from Utah’s Green River. It’s late April in Moab, and after a long winter up north, the desert sun has yet to wear out its welcome on my skin. We’re on our way to a place known to slackliners as “Atlantis Bowl”, a formation perched on the edge of a sandstone wall a thousand feet above the river. They are doing something many of us could not do, and I am not referring to walking a one-inch nylon line, stretched across a sandstone canyon. They are living and working together, in very close quarters, and from what I can see, they are doing a pretty good job of it. I’ve been married for nearly 20 years now, and I can tell you that while I love spending time with my wife, our version of balance requires a little more individualism.

Fine Line Written by: Kevin Rogers

Balance.

In some form or another, we are all looking for it. Our relationships, careers, and the things that we do in our own time, all seem to require it. Without it, our lives would eventually play out like a bad country song; we’d lose our jobs, friends, lovers, and be left alone to craft sappy songs of sorrow in our proverbial vans down by the river.

2

However, as Paul Simon wrote, “One man’s ceiling is another man’s loor”, so then again, living in a van down by the river might seem pretty darn nice to some folks. (If this hypothetical river had trout in it, I’d probably be one of them.) Would it be too much to ask to have both?

ABOVE: Mike Blackwill & Faith Dickey Photo: Zack Pass

My presence here is simply as an observer. With camera in hand, I watch as Faith and Mike set up the line they are preparing to walk. They are patient, they communicate, they work with each other. Long before either of them sets foot on the line, I am impressed. Most couples would consider this a high stress environment, yet, from where I am standing you’d never know it. “When the body is stressed, it produces adrenaline, and slack lining is not about adrenaline” Faith tells me, after completing her irst walk across the line. “It’s more about calm, it’s a lot more peaceful than most people think.” A few steps away, Mike walks over and chimes in.

“We set it up, we know the strengths, we know the math, and we have redundancies every step of the way, just in case there is a problem. We wouldn’t be doing this if we felt like we were taking huge risks every time we did it.” I smile to myself.

I have said similar things to people over the years. In my early twenties I was a climbing instructor and backcountry guide in Utah’s Uinta range. I was (and still am) very comfortable with climbing equipment. Like them, I never climbed for the adrenaline, I climbed for the clarity. Climbing had a way of pushing out all the noise in my head, allowing me to focus like I never had before. Perhaps the most important element was that it taught me what it felt like to be focused, something I would use to this day. Learning how to focus, to block out noise, that was the important part. Reaching the top was icing on the cake, of course, it took me nearly

20 years of climbing to igure that out. Sitting on a sandstone step a few feet back from the edge, I pose a question to Faith. “There has to be more than this – more than slacklining.” I said.

She looked at me inquisitively but said nothing at irst. Though I was impressed with what she was able to do, I knew the feats she had accomplished were more of a path than inal destination. The forty-one-year-old in me was more curious where the next chapter would take her. She took a second to collect her thoughts as she removed her harness. “I want to help others get there.” She said.

“I want to help them overcome whatever is holding them back.” Everyone has to ind their path through this life. Faith has taken something that she wasn’t particularly good at in the beginning and turned it into an art form. She is one of the leading women of the sport and has inspired us as well as hundreds of thousands of others around the globe. We are proud to be a part of Faith and Mike’s story, and we are excited for the next chapter. KR To see the full short ilm of Faith & Mike crossing the Atlantis bowl, visit grip6.com

Outside The Box An inside look into the U.S. packaging industry . Written by: Ruthie Kohrman The hot desert breeze coiled through the doorway as I entered the building. Giant rolls of paper, taller than two California bungalows, towered above me. The smell of fresh ink lingered in the cavernous warehouse as rows of machines hummed their part in a well-orchestrated tune. From the beginning, GRIP6 has committed to making things close to home so we can better understand the origin story of everything that goes into our products. Understanding these processes allows us to make informed decisions on our footprint as a company, and with that knowledge comes accountability. One of the early lessons we learned came through our attempts to source recycled packaging. Finding a local packaging manufacturer that specializes in post consumer materials proved to be harder than the hunt for the Red October. Several companies were producing paper from post consumer sources, but every printer we spoke with told us the same thing,It’s dificult to work with, it breaks when folded, and the quality is inconsistent. At that point we knew we needed to build a relationship with a company that would be willing to ind a solution to our problem. That led us to North Star Printing in Spanish Fork, Utah. Immediately upon meeting them, it was clear that Neal and Jera Foster, owners and founders of North Star Printing, care about their impact on the environment. They care about everything from their clients and employees to making sure that each tree harvested for paper products is replaced and allowed to grow. When we met with them, they were candid, honest, and willing to listen. We were surprised to learn of other companies, who proudly print

26

“100% Recycled Material” on their packaging, knowing that the paper contains no post consumer content. “I don’t agree with it” says Neal, “but we don’t control their art departments, that’s up to them.” Neal has been a printer for over 20 years, and you’d be hard pressed to ind an individual with more knowledge and expertise. While our packaging is currently not 100% recycled, we are working together to ind a product that performs well enough to compete with virgin paper products. This has required us both to stretch and grow outside of our normal routines. “Thinking outside the box guides our initiatives in areas such as business development, product innovation and equipment investment”, Neal continued. “It is mission critical that we are nimble in evolving our offering to meet the emerging needs of our customers” Recently, the global waste game has taken a sharp turn as China put a ban on waste imports. While more paper and plastic ending up in landills is not desirable, industry oficials said it could ultimately drive the U.S. to process more of its own recycling. Neal and Jera are already ahead of the game. Their on-site facility captures 100% of all waste paper through a system that can only be described as a thing of beauty. The beloved North Star employee known as “Uncle Leon”, would tell you a charming tale of how it was dreamt of and collected piece by piece until the mechanism was a perfectly primed recycling machine. Whether you’re charmed by his hunting tales, trying to ind the perfect parts, or simply in awe of the inal engineering masterpiece, anyone who sees it in action would be in awe of the machination of this recycler.

The US demand for recycled products is far lower than the supply. “We need to take an active role in creating more demand for the materials our members are processing,” said David Biderman, executive director and CEO of the Solid Waste Association of North America. In the United States alone, about 258 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) were generated. Over 89 million tons of MSW were recycled and composted. In addition over 33 million tons of MSW were combusted with energy recovery and 136 million tons were landilled. 136 million tons this means that we, the people, will need to take a more active role in how we consume. We can also choose companies that are working to improve the low of post consumer products. In addition, the Solid Waste Association of North America has created a recycling task force to assist companies worried about the future of their recycling programs. While we may not be able to print “100% Recycled” on our packaging just yet, we are forging relationships and taking steps to ensure that we are doing more to preserve the planet we love for the next generation. Our customers have our commitment that throughout this process, we will be honest, and with a little help, we’ll get there.

Every scrap is collected at the end of each machine and automatically swooped through pipes up and around the warehouse ceiling, twisting, turning until arriving at the recycler outside. The recycler itself has been customized by years of design changes, trial and error, and a Davincian knack for invention. The scraps pass through the machine and come out the other side as the most neatly bundled bail you’ve ever seen, ready to take to the recycling plant. But therein lies the problem. Where does it go from here? LEFT: North Star Printing Spanish Fork, Utah. ABOVE: Neal and Jera Foster. PHOTO: Ruthie Kohrman

Flight Path Why GRIP6 has entered the world of disc golf. Written by: Kevin Rogers

You know that disc golf has been around for a while

40

when the prize for one of its earliest tournaments was a new Datsun, a company that hasn’t been sold in the US for 32 years. Though we know it’s been some time, the exact year and place where disc golf was born is all but impossible to pin-point. It was more like an anonymous collection of contributions by a number of groups all over the US. These groups were all playing the same game, each not knowing that the others existed. In 1973 however, the groups became aware of one-another through an IFA (International Frisbee Association) newsletter. The following year, they decided to hold a national tournament in Rochester, NY to see how big the sport actually was. That event planted the seed that would fuel the growth of disc golf, for the next 45 years

41067 Unless you live in a bomb Active PDGA Members shelter, you’ve probably 35662 noticed the network of 2008-2018 disc golf chain baskets 30396 being installed somewhere near you. In 2006, 24443 there were 17,000 tradi20587 18089 tional ball golf courses in 16109 15451 14326 the US. At that same 12980 time, there were just 1,700 disc golf courses. Fast forward to 2016 and the picture looks a little different. Nearly 2,000 traditional ball golf courses have closed as the upcoming generations have turned their back on the expensive and often exclusive sport. “ It’s not the game that’s the culprit, it’s the culture that surrounds it that can be challenging.” Says Nate Sexton, last years US Disc Golf Champion. “Ball golf has always positioned itself as a sport of the wealthy, making accessibility a real problem for people who might be great for the game, but can’t really afford to play it.”

Enter the meteoric rise of disc golf. In the same time the ball golf world saw closures, 3,300 new disc golf courses were installed in the US alone, bringing the current total to 5,000. Unlike ball golf, the overwhelming majority of disc golf courses are free to play. They are relatively inexpensive to install, require far less water, and can be part of a varied land use approach. With an average of 96 courses per state, disc golf provides fertile soil for anyone willing to pick up a disc. The PDGA has grown 216% in the last decade, the majority of that rise coming in the last 5 years. Most industry experts agree that for every registered player, there are between 25 and 50 unregistered players who have played the game at least 5 times. This places the number of players in the 1-2 million range and growing. In addition to being accessible, affordable, and highly addictive, disc golf gets you outside. In a digital age where people are spending more time in front of electronic devices, disc golf helps you to break that cycle, providing a connection to the natural world. Courses are often off the beaten path, in mountains, near creeks, and through wooded country that is good for the soul. Before we were belt builders, we were climbers, backpackers and ly ishers. For us, a vote for disc golf, is a vote for the outdoors. Give it a try and we think you’ll understand. KR
