Why do iron ships float?

IS IT ALL ABOUT THE SHAPE? An iron ship can float because it is shaped so it will contain air within its hull, therefore the adverage density of the ship is a whole including cactivities. Whereas just a lump of iron will most definitely not float due to the shape of it. However if you was to stretch the lump of iron out into the shape of a ship, then it would most definitely float if the density was correct.

BALANCE

The bottom of this ship goes down ending into a sharp point. This means the ship is able to travel faster because it is able to skirt the waves and rise out the water. Meaning the purpose of these types of ships are manufactured for delivering goods.

& SHAPE

With a more curved and flat bottom this ship has a lot more balance and can move through the water slowly. These type of ships are made for cruise ships or cargo ships that want to move slowly through the sea due to not being in a rush to get from one place to another.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LOAD LINES In the 1800’s ships that were built and loaded in Europe all sank when they reached tropical water. This was because of a change in water density. People back in this time when building the ships had no knowlendge about the water density, hence why the ships sank once reaching warmer water.

These lines above are the load lines found on the side of a boat, thesee show how much the ship can be loaded depending on what waters its travelling in.

EUROPE WATER- SALTY, COLD WITH HIGHER DENSITY.

TROPICAL WATER- LOW AMOUNT OF SALT, WARM WITH LOWER DENSITY.

LOCKABLE CO

This is a diagram of how the watertight doors would contain the water if the ship was damaged. The red lines represent where the doors would be.

OMPARTMENTS

The waterltight bulkhead doors close if the hull of the ship is damaged and begins to let water in. These doors contain the water to one section of the ship preventing it from sinking.

Gravity

The ball has two different forces acting on it when it is dropped in to the bath. Gravity and buoyancy help dtermin wether the ball will float.

Buoyancy

ARCHIMEDES Archimedes figured out in the bath that the water moves for you to get in, which made him to realise that the water had to move for you to float. He relised this when the water in the bath rose as he got in.
