Semester Overview
I’d like to think that I am versatile enough to cope well with both tight and open briefs. Somtimes I think a tight brief is easier to work with; when someone knows roughly what they want designed/illustrated it can be useful, although often it can also be restrictive. When developing my ideas I normally start off with only a couple, usually I know the concept I want to take ENQV@QCR @MC @KLNRS DW@BSKX VG@S ( V@MS LX jM@K OHDBD SN KNNJ KHJD @KSGNTFG R@XHMF SG@S ( KNUD CHRBTRRHMF HCD@R VHSG ODNOKD and thinking of alternative solutions.
( C R@X SG@S TRD NE BGH@QNRBTQN HR CDjMHSDKX @M HMSDFQ@K DKDLDMS NE LX VNQJ ( KNUD GHFG BNMSQ@RS AK@BJ @MC VGHSD HL@FDR and minimal colour. I tend to use ink pen, pencil and photoshop (for colouring and texturing my images). I’m a great fan of dip pen but wish I could use paint to better effect (see Little White Lies brief). I like databending and glitch art, which I’ve been interested in for a couple of years but it was only this year when I decided to incorporate some elements of it into my work. Although I’m not the best with colour I feel that with more practice I can learn to use it effectively. I loved making my illustrations look abrasive with gareish colours through digital manipulation (see Collections brief). In all honesty I couldn’t say for certain what my strengths are when it comes to illustration. My favourite briefs this year have been the Collections, Heroes and Little White Lies briefs. I really enjoyed designing my Collections booklet and for the jQRS SHLD ( UD DUDQ OQNCTBDC @ ANNJ ( V@R QD@KKX OQNTC VHSG SGD jMHRGDC OQNCTBS ( L PTHSD FNNC @S jMCHMF HMSDQDRSHMF @MC HMROHQ@SHNM@K RNTQBDR VGDM ( QDRD@QBG ( L QD@KKX HMSDQDRSDC HM jMCHMF NTS A@BJRSNQHDR @MC HMENQL@SHNM RTQQNTMCHMF AQHDER The Meltdown 2012 posters were fun to do, I liked the no holds barred experimental nature of the brief. At one point this year I had real issues with timekeeping and organisation, my Book Covers brief overran into my Reportage Workshops brief and completely threw me off course. However, compared to last year when this happened almost every brief I’d say my organisation has improved. With briefs like Everything is Broken and Reportage Workshops I learned to just dive straight in and produce a lot of illustrations but not to forgot to consider composition. Since im interested in both design, photography and illustration i would like to try my hand at all trhee. over summer im KNNJHMF SN FDS @ EDV OK@BDLDMSR RHMBD jUD LNMSGR HR @ KNMF SHLD H V@MS SN OQNCTBD @MC CDRHFM LX NVM ANNJKDSR DWGHAHSHMF my photography, illustrative prints/posters, illustrate some stories and generally try some new things. i did a branding/ stationary/webdesign brief for a jewellery student at this uni and i found it really enjoyable to do some live work for someone, id like to do more of the same in the future. I like typography, design, architecture, photography, nature, rock climbing, politics, economics, fair trade, free range, charities, being scruffy, not watching shit television, street art, roots music and some other stuff. I like putting hours into a really intricate illustration (although I haven’t done a lot of that this year at all) but I also love expressive scratchy illustrations. Design wise I really like sleek looking coprorate design, however I also like scruffy natural home-made looking design. Experimental typographic layouts really interest me, I love it when people manage to make something that should look horribly messy just work fantasticly as a piece of design or illustration.

It was a great learning experience in terms of communication with clients and presenting work. Aesthetically I like corporate design, but ethically I love fair trade, free range and charities- it would be great if I could do some work for some ethically sound companies over summer. Basically I have lots of plans and lots of ideas I want to get into over summer. #1 is completing the redesign of my website, I’m aiming to have it live before the end of next month.
