Overview of the semester Integral elements: I tend to come up with an idea for a direction I want to go in and then do research on that subject on the imagery sorrunding it, looking into patterns and colours etc. I draw from life or from found imagery rather than making stuff up from my head, I can’t draw in that way at all which I found out from the Tim Burton project. I think the main thing for me is I just look at lots and lots of stuff in books and on the web and eventually it finds its way into my work, Success: I have been most succesful when I am working on imagery from observations I have made rather than making up charcters off the top of my head, this has improved my drawing skills and started to give me more of my own personal drawing style. Taking my love of pattern into my work I feel the viewer now sees what I see, I notice the patterns in every day life and now that is being applied into my work. This coupled with the fact I have started to use a colour a lot more has taken my work on a lot further and I am starting to feel more confident in it. Lately I have been looking at lots and lots of vintage childrens books and I think if I hadn’t been doing this my work wouldn’t be looking how it does now, perhaps still dull black and white work. Even when looking on the opposite page you can see the colour progression. I was also really surprised at how well the underpass turned out it was extremely hard work doing but I feel very worth it. From thae underpass I learned not to underestimate myself so much and decided it is something I would love to do again. I hope I can keep up the work ethic I have when I finish uni although I don’t really see this being a problem. Personality: I feel like my personality comes through in my work, my love for 60’s and 70’s psychedelic work is definitely showing colour wise and I finally managed to get a whole project about cats done! I really love cats. My interest in vintage childrens books is also coming through stylisticly into my work. I could see some of my pattern designs going onto fabric for homware or scarves and such so in this way my interest in fashion is seeping in. I do love my music and movies although I’m not too sure this is something that you can see through my work. I collect lots of what I find interesting objects but what others might consider ‘crap’ from second hand shops and vintage/antique shops which I have round my room, I think these infleunce me a lot without me realising, homeware is my new collecting obsession. I have a few ideas in mind for projects in the future and I see my style continually developing for the better as it has been for the past semester, I have reliased my sytrengths and weakness’ and intend to work on my weakness’ and hone my craft. I had intended to just go down the road of freelance but I don’t see sitting on my own all the time as something for me so I’m going to contact studios and hopefully get a job in that area. I would love to start developing my own products on the side and get into fabric design.

Hairy Hook Ups

I firstly done observations of the taxidermy in Tullie House which I then made into a book about the animals going on blind dates that go horribly wrong. I had to get over the humour side of it to the viewer. I was aiming this at my age group 18-25 but also the kind of people that visit Tullie House and would maybe appreciate this.

Tim Burton Poems

A small book illustrating various horrifying Tim Burton poems. I had to get over the humour side of it to the viewer while still having a horror element. I was aiming this at adults.

Brickyard Poster

A poster for local venue the Brickyard The poster was trying to get across what type of music the band are. Aimed at 18-25 people who would be into that band.

Underpass

I wona competition to redesign an underpass in Carlisle I had to make this appealing to all age groups, everyone uses the underpass. All age groups.

Wind in the Willows

Entry for the Penguin design Awards This also had to appeal to a wide range of age groups which was the main issue. All age groups.

Animal Park

A collaboraton with a fashion promotion student Working with someone else and embracing what they wanted whilst still trying to get across what I think it should be. All age groups.

Gorey

A collaboraton with a fashion promotion student Working with someone else and embracing what they wanted whilst still trying to get across what I think it should be. All age groups.

Carlsile Map

A firstly done observations of buildings in the Warwick road area of Carlisle then made them into a map. Again I wanted this to appeal to a wide age range, but probably didnt succeed in that. All age groups. Ended up being more 18-30 probably.

Edinburgh Map

A firstly done observations of buildings in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh then I made them into a map. Again I wanted this to appeal to a wide age range, I think this was more successful in that than the previous one. All age groups.

Ferocious Feline Stationery Set

A stationery set based on the dead animals my cats bring me as treats. I think this could be any age but they would have to get the joke and not just think I was being really vicious. All age groups.
