INITIAL IDEAS.

Basic analysis of the colour scheme which could then potentially represent moods further on in the project. Snippets of conversations from the people of Starbucks to conclude atmosphere and moods. Analysis of senses to gather an overall feeling and vibes within the location.

Further research into colour schemes, and sketches of surroundings. Personality based research on the customers of Starbucks, including a sign language card swapped by a customer for 80p. Notes on atmosphere both with and without customers in the surroundings.

INITIAL IDEAS Ctd...

In our first feedback session with peers and tutors we discussed our initial ideas and what direction we wanted to go in, and how we were going to do that.

Our initial ideas were to create pieces of artwork that convey the atmosphere of the chosen location, both with and without people in the surroundings.

To do this, we decided that we were going to test and experiment with a variety of materials, with different textures and surfaces, as this would allow us to conclude which materials best convey the atmospheric conditions.

TUTORIAL.

Monet was our original influence picked for our project as the colours are expressive of the emotions that Monet was feeling whilst painting the pictures and therefore this inspired us to take a similar route.

INSPIRATION.

INSPIRATION.

Beginning with basic materials, we were inspired by Paul Hogarth’s work as you could see the features included in the scene but no colours were used, making the locations seem dull and difficult to interpret the atmosphere.

INSPIRATION. When considering another basic material, pencil crayon, we came across Paul Heaston’s work which inspired us to use selective parts of the imagery to draw the audience’s attention to. Despite this, we didn’t incorporate all of the features such as the excessive number of lines to define the shades as we wanted the atmosphere to convey lonliness.

Looking into a wider variety of materials, we found a watercolourist called Maja Wronska that, like Claude Monet, conveys the vibes and atmosphere through the use of colour. As a result of this, we decided to use the colour scheme of the interior of Starucks to represent the atmosphere that is experienced when you visit there.

INSPIRATION.

Like Claude Monet, Sally Strand uses an etchy technique so that the picture has more structure towards it. However, when attempting a Monet/Strand influenced piece we struggled to get the same etchy affect which consequently didn’t express the bold, vibrancy that we desired.

INSPIRATION.

As we had originally planned to produce work influenced by Monet, we tried using and blending different colours of a variety of materials to see what worked best when displaying the atmosphere in the image.

However, we found that watercolours were quite difficult to blend and mix together without the surface material becoming saturated or the colours combining to make a brown colour, as this was not one of the vibrant colours we desired to use.

When attempting Vincent Van Gogh styled work we used oil pastels however we found it difficult to blend the colours into one another and so we can conclude that this is not a preferred material for the final products.

INSPIRATION.

FINAL IDEAS. After researching several artists we came to the conclusion that pencil crayon, fineliner and watercolours were the best materials to use when conveying the atmosphere in Starbucks both with and without customers. Personality of the customers would be expressed through quotes and notes of their body language, as this provides a sense of their lifetsyle and life story.
