What is cast iron? The stages of cast iron Pros and cons the history cast iron objcts

What is cast iron? Cast iron is a hard, brittle alloy of iron and carbon. the material is used to make many items from household equiptment such as pans to plumbing appliances. Because of it high melting point, good fluidity, resistance to deformation and wear resistance it has also become an engineering material with a wide range of applications and are used in pipes, machines and automobile industry parts. It’s even used with steel on bridges on areas such as arches because of its strength and durability when compressed.

Step

Pour sand into flask, fillin wooden mould, in this exa wooden pan. Make sure the p so that the sand can be c around the sides. Once the rest of the flask up to th sand to make it compact an air remaining in the mould. W it should only take a few m of the flask and separat

step 3 once the cast is separated, file down any imperfections and bits missed by the cast. coat in an oily formula that will help prevent the metal from sticking to the cast.

STEP 4 Put in holes for the pouring in of the liquid metal. The holes have to be big enough for a good amount of the metal to be poured into but not too big that the liquid goes in too fast as it could overflow. add on a funnel to put around the hole attach with a clay and sand mixture

step 5 Heat up the iron to around 1500° (irons melting point). Pour the molten iron into the cast being very careful as even though the metal is melted the weight remains the same. Leave it for an hour then split the cast in half and take out the pan.

STEP 6 Once finished, sand down the pan to get rid of roughness and to make it smooth. this may take come time as the cast can come out quite rough.

step 7 Once sanded coat in oil and leave to dry for a couple of hours. Repeat twice so that the pan is smooth and sufficiently stick proof.

Your pan is ready!

Pros

- Long lasting durability - Natural non stick capabilities - Excellent machinability - Resistance of deformation

Cons - Prone to rusting - Heavy

The History of Cast Iron 13th Century Al Quazvini and other travellers discovered the casting iron technique whilst traveling around china

1770s Abraham Darby III built the iron bridge. The first major bridge in the world to be made of cast iron

1750 Application of the steam engine to power-blast bellows, increasing production of cast iron.

1891 Cast iron bridges replaced with steel because of the instability and brittleness of iron.
