Oil Painting Fluency & Flow Syllabus SUMMER ENROLLMENT 2021 10 Weeks, Comprehensive, 80+ Lectures, Studio visits and Critiques DESCRIPTION Oil Painting Fluency & Flow is a 10 week comprehensive workshop offering a fully developed experiential and intellectual understanding of oil painting through assignments, lectures, studio visits and live sessions by Kimberly Brooks. Many experienced oil painters take the class to backfill knowledge not commonly taught in art schools about the history and science of the materials in addition to deep dives on painting structures and the creative process. Some acrylic painters take this as the same principles behind layering and pigments apply. Unlike many courses that focus on “techniques of the old masters”, the course provides the scaffolding to think and paint more freely (away from copying photographs) and draws both from art history and contemporary art to illuminate oil painting. Full Class Description CURRICULUM The heart of the curriculum is recorded and students work at their own pace over the 10 week period which starts when they enroll during the open enrollment period. The videos are short and highly visual lectures that focus on a discrete facet. Each week a new batch of lectures are released. The thrice monthly live sessions offer space for individualized critiques of student work and Q&A with visiting artists, curators and arts professionals. LIVE SESSION SCHEDULE The class meets live on Zoom 3x per month according to the following schedule: 1st and 2nd Tuesdays 4:00 PM PST 3rd Wednesdays at 4:00 PM PST If a student misses a session, they can request a recording within 7 days. MATERIALS & SAFE PRACTICES Any space can be conducive for oil painting. The class is taught solvent-free therefore little or no ventilation is necessary. Furthermore, methods are encouraged to create the least amount of waste with an emphasis on avoiding contaminating the water supply from pigments, an unfortunate common problem amongst users of water-based media. The first week is devoted to studio set up and what materials to order or get to begin. This includes a comprehensive checklist with a list of products. (continued on page 2.)
