Please remember to update your information by verifying your address when arriving. This information is helpful to GRIC Community Services during an emergency such as monsoon weather or power outage event.

Children with

Hepatitis

of Unknown Cause Hepatitis (liver inflammation) of unknown cause has been reported in children worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported 340 probable cases of hepatitis in children from 20 countries. The CDC is investigating 109 cases of children with acute hepatitis of unknown cause in 25 states and territories in United States since October 2021.

OF THE 109 CASES IN THE US: •

The majority of cases were in young children, with a median age of 2 years

•

More than half had a confirmed adenovirus infection, most commonly F type 41

•

Ninety percent were hospitalized

•

Fourteen percent required liver transplants

•

While the majority fully recovered, five have died

CAUSE At this time, the cause of hepatitis in these children is still unknown. While adenovirus has been detected in some children, we do not know if it is the cause of the illness.

WHAT PARENTS CAN DO If you have any questions about your child’s health, call your child’s healthcare provider.

Be aware of the symptoms of liver inflammation, which include: º º º º

Fever/fatigue Loss of appetite Nausea/vomiting Abdominal pain

Dark urine Light-colored stools (poop) Jaundice (yellowing of the skin)

Keep children up to date on all their vaccinations.

•

Help your child take everyday actions to help prevent disease, like: º º º

Washing hands often Avoiding people who are sick Covering coughs and sneezes

Teaching them to avoid touching their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Hepatitis vaccine does not protect against this type of hepatitis. This hepatitis outbreak does not appear to be COVID-related.

VOLUNTARY RECALL OF SELECT JIF® PRODUCTS The J. M. Smucker Co. is recalling select Jif® peanut butter products sold in the U.S. due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The recalled peanut butter was distributed nationwide in retail stores and other outlets. *Gila River Health Care Dietary Services does not have any of these products

INFORMATION ABOUT MONKEYPOX What is monkeypox?

Monkeypox is a viral disease that infects animals like rodents and monkeys and can spread to humans. Although monkey pox occurs predominantly in Central and West African countries, majority of the recent cases have been reported in Europe. As of 5/24/22 there has been 1 confirmed and 8 suspected cases reported in the U.S. How does it spread?

• Close contact with an infected person. (The virus can enter the body through broken skin and mucous membranes, through the eyes, nose, mouth or respiratory secretions, or sexual contact.)

• Touching clothing and bedding used by someone with rash • Contact with infected animals such as monkeys, rats and squirrels through a bite or contact with the animal’s bodily fluids.

This virus is NOT as contagious as covid or flu virus What are the symptoms of monkeypox?

Initial symptoms include fever, headaches, swollen glands, back pain, muscle aches.

These symptoms often are accompanied by a pimple-like or blister-like rash.

Most cases are mild, sometimes resembling chickenpox, and clear up on their own within a few weeks, though this may take up to 14-21 days The severity of the illness will depend on the initial health of the individual, the route of exposure, and the strain of the infecting virus.

What do you do if infected or suspect you were infected with monkeypox?

Please seek medical attention immediately if you have fevers, body aches, and swollen glands, accompanied with a rash.

Please contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation if you feel sick AND have: • Traveled to countries where monkeypox cases have been reported • Have had contact with a person who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of confirmed or suspected monkeypox • If you are a male who has had close or intimate in-person contact with other men in the past month What is the treatment? And how do you prevent infection?

• Outbreaks can be controlled by avoiding contact with infected person • Available vaccines against smallpox is effective in preventing monkeypox infection • Certain Antiviral drugs may also help.

NEW GUIDANCE ON ISOLATION May 23, 2022

Home Isolation Guidance for People Who Test Positive or Have Symptoms Consistent with COVID-19* Regardless of your vaccination status, if you test POSITIVE for COVID-19 with a COVID-19 lab test, you need to isolate at home for at least 5 days.

Wear well-fitting mask for a total of 10 days from day of positive test. *If you have COVID symptoms, isolate at home and get tested by your medical provider.
