Editor: Andrew Copley Deputy Editor: Molly Haines Greyhound Monthly Victoria (GMV) magazine is produced by Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), the governing body of greyhound racing in this state. GRV strongly encourages all Victorian greyhound racing participants - in particular breeders and trainers - to take the time to read each issue of GMV to ensure they are across relevant key issues. Each edition of GMV aims to provide an overview of key happenings in relation to Victorian greyhound racing that occurred during the previous month, as well as promoting significant and relevant upcoming activities and events. If you receive Greyhound Monthly Victoria via post but only read it on-line, GRV asks that you please consider the environment and notify us via email (tmaagma@grv.org. au) requesting to be removed from our mailing list. You can also request to have GMV emailed to you via the same email address. It is GRV’s goal to have each edition of Greyhound Monthly Victoria available on-line at grv.org.au on or before the last day of the previous month, and arriving in letter boxes by the 10th day of each month.

hile the race to be crowned Victorian Greyhound of the Year will be decided away from the racetrack, the competition for the 2018-19 title is as fierce as any on-course battle the contenders have fought throughout their stellar careers.

W

Orson Allen, prepared by young mentor Correy Grenfell, lined up in an amazing 17 Group events over the 2018/19 period and was a two-time winner at Group 1 level in the Perth Cup and Harrison-Dawson, while he was runner-up in both the Temlee and Maturity Classic.

The Victorian GOTY winner, as well as the Sprinter and Stayer of the Year and other awards, will be announced at the Victorian Greyhound Awards ceremony, to be held at Crown on Friday, 16 August.

The son of KC And All also won the Group 2 Cranbourne and Horsham Cups, Group 3 Sandown Shootout and Listed Australian Sprint.

These prestigious awards are voted on by the Victorian GOTY Panel, based on performances between 1 July, 2018 and 30 June, 2019. Won for the last two years by champion Fanta Bale, this year’s Victorian GOTY will be fought out by a stellar crop, headlined by (in alphabetical order), Dyna Patty, My Redeemer, Orson Allen, Poke The Bear and Tornado Tears, which appears to have the Stayer of the Year gong at his mercy. Dyna Patty, trained by Andrea Dailly, started the 2018/19 period in a blaze of glory, winning the Group 1 Maturity Classic. She then added a second Group 1 at The Meadows to her resume in the Australian Cup. Dyna Patty went on to win the Group 2 Warrnambool Cup, while her other feature race appearances included finishing third in the Group 1 Perth Cup and runner-up in Sandown’s Group 3 Easter Gift and qualifying for the finals of the Group 1 Topgun, Group 2 Ballarat Cup and Group 3 Silver Bullet. My Redeemer stamped his claim for GOTY honours when triumphing in the biggest race on the Victorian calendar, the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, continuing a golden period for trainer Dave Geall. My Redeemer was retired to stud while still at the peak of his powers after finishing sixth in the Australian Cup Final in March, while he also contested the Group 1 Temlee, Group 3 Warragul St Leger and Group 3 Cranbourne Classic.

Poke The Bear, trained by Seona Thompson, was unstoppable at his best, as evidenced when he put the best sprinters in the land to the sword in the Topgun, while he also won the Group 3 Silver Bullet, both events at The Meadows. Poke The Bear’s other noteworthy achievements included qualifying for the Melbourne Cup, Temlee and Paws Of Thunder, all Group 1s, finishing second in the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup and starting favourite in the inaugural Million Dollar Chase Final. Australia’s number one stayer, Tornado Tears, could give master trainer Robert Britton a third straight Victorian GOTY victor. Despite spending a significant period on the sidelines due to injury, Tornado Tears won the Group 1 National Distance Championship (at Sandown), Group 1 Zoom Top invitational, Group 3 Top Cat Video Cup and Group 3 Albion Park Superstayers. He was runner-up in the Group 1 Galaxy after breaking the Cannington track record in his heat and qualified for the finals of another four Group 1s, the Super Stayers, Sandown Cup, Association Cup and Albion Park Gold Cup. The five abovementioned contenders all laid legitimate claim to being the premier greyhound sprinter of stayer in Australia at different stages of the 2018-19 season. But could there be an upset on the night? Remarkably, three other Victorian-trained greyhounds won two Group 1s apiece during the season - Barooga Brett, Deliver and Neo Cleo – adding further intrigue to the panel’s decision.

teve White’s stellar 2019 continued at The Meadows on Saturday night when Sennachie was a brilliant allthe-way winner of the Group 1 Maturity Classic Final (525m) on 27 July in 29.53sec.

6

Sennachie wins the age-restricted Maturity by four lengths to Whiskey Riot and Feral Franky.

The Maturity was Sennachie’s second Group 1 success in the space of a month, with the son of champion 2015 Maturity hero Fernando Bale having also won the Brisbane Cup in track-record time on 4 July. Sennachie also won the Group 2 Queensland Derby in May, while after starting his career in South Australia in late 2018 he gave a sign of things to come when finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Silver Chief, another Meadows’ restricted age event, in January. “The Silver Chief was only his sixth start and it really turned him around,” explained White, who resides in the Gippsland town of Buln Buln East.

“It was a hard, tough run against free-for-all sprinters, he was just more or less a grade five dog but he had an enormous amount of ability and that just toughened him up.” Sennachie shared the spotlight with champion stayer Tornado Tears, which silenced his critics when romping to back-to-back victories in the Group Listed Fireball Final (725m) at The Meadows on the same night.

T

he inaugural National Straight Track Championship – showcasing the best straight-trackers from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia - will add enormous interest to the first-ever Healesville Cup Carnival. Featuring six sensational Sunday meetings, the Carnival commences on 4 August with the Victorian heats of the National Straight Track Championship and concludes on 8 September with the running of the Group 3 Healesville Cup, both events being conducted over 350m. The innovative National Straight Track Championship, supported by SEN, will see qualifying series conducted in Victoria (Healesville), Queensland (Capalaba) and South Australia (Murray Bridge). The top three placegetters from Queensland and South Australia will qualify for the $35,000 to-the-winner National Grand Final, to be staged on 18 August, where they will be joined by the first two from the host state. The overall winner will also secure entry into the heats of the Healesville Cup on 1 September, with this year’s Cup winner’s purse boosted to $47,000, in line with other

provincial cups, after last year being worth $25,000. The Cup Final meeting will also feature the running of the Castle Of Mey Cup Consolation, worth $5000 to-thewinner, an historic event initially introduced by the Albury Greyhound Racing Club to honour the Queen Mother and sanctioned by the Royal Family. The race has been held at Traralgon since 2004 and will find a new home at Healesville this year with Traralgon currently out of action. “This is the inaugural Healesville Cup Carnival and it will incorporate 13 race meetings and 156 races across a month at Healesville,” said Healesville GA Manager Cynthia O’Brien. “A total of $382,540 prize money will be distributed across the 13 Healesville meetings, including a massive $50,000 in the Straight Track Championship Final and $67,000 in the Healesville Cup Final. “The support for straight track racing has never been stronger.”

Crimson Vixen takes out the Bendigo Cup final by 1.66 lengths over Time To Talk (5) and Zipping Sassy in a sizzling 23.54sec.

Norm McCullagh and Crimson Vixen finally landed their first group win in the Bendigo Cup after a change of fortune.

W

arrnambool training legend Norm McCullagh and his classy sprinter Crimson Vixen weren’t able to win their hometown Cup in May, running third to Dyna Patty. But they made amends in style in the Group 2 Triple M Bendigo Cup Final (425m) on 5 July. “I thought with luck we might win a maiden at Warrnambool but she’s really excelled,” an emotional McCullagh said after the win. Prior to Bendigo, McCullagh, who famously won four

consecutive Sandown Cups with immortal stayer Bold Trease between 1986 and 1989, hadn’t had a great deal of luck in feature events with Crimson Vixen. In addition to her Warrnambool Cup placing, the daughter of Barcia Bale had to be scratched from the semi-finals of the Golden Easter Egg and she fell on the first turn in the Group 1 Sapphire Crown Final. Raced by the Mingo’s Mates Syndicate, a group of first-time owners involved with the Timboon Football Club, Crimson Vixen collected a $47,000 first prize in the Bendigo Cup as the $1.60 favourite.

T

he Board of GRV has endorsed the new U-shaped racetrack at Traralgon to proceed to an open tender.

The decision was endorsed at a Board meeting on 30 July following consultation with stakeholders, the overwhelming majority of which favoured a U-shaped track as opposed to a J-shaped design.

Both options were designed with track safety at the forefront of mind, and the project will now go out to tender. The Traralgon GRC has been in recess for several months and will reopen for racing again in 2020, possibly as soon as May. A diagram of the approved design is below:

AUGUST 2019

espite the early Kennel Cough outbreak this year, August is still a high-risk month for Kennel Cough. As discussed previously, there is still potential for another, more severe and longer lasting outbreak to occur over the next month, especially given the very cold weather Victoria has experienced this winter. Kennel Cough can persist well into spring and can also reoccur in animals that have already been infected in the same year. All greyhounds that haven’t been vaccinated for Kennel Cough in 2019 should be vaccinated against Kennel Cough now, ideally with an intra-nasal vaccine as we know this gives higher protection than the injectable vaccine.

Welfare & Re-homing Report By Gavin Goble General Manager Greyhound Welfare and Re-homing

Nutrition for racing success

U

nderstanding the nutritional and energy requirements of your greyhound is fundamental to racing success. Racing greyhounds are elite athletes with specific requirements for protein, fat and carbohydrate. There are many different ways to meet the dietary requirements for your greyhound, but it should be cost-effective. The amount of energy required by an adult racing greyhound will differ depending on their weight. On average, a 30kg racing greyhound needs about 1,700 kcal of energy per day. Research has shown the ideal diet for a racing greyhound contains 24% protein, 40-50% fat and 26-36% carbohydrates. While this might appear simple to achieve, it can be quite difficult. Good quality commercial diets (kibble) can provide a good base upon which to build the best diet for your greyhound.

Research has shown the ideal diet for a racing greyhound contains 24% protein, 40-50% fat and 26-36% carbohydrates.

Commercial diets offer a range of essential nutrients at appropriate levels and avoids the need to add expensive supplements; something that is difficult to achieve in a home-made diet consisting of various raw meats. Providing supplements in your greyhound’s diet is sometimes necessary, but beware. Feeding too much of the wrong supplements is costly, wasteful, may be detrimental to your greyhound’s health and performance, and could result in a positive swab. If you are not using a commercial diet, you should work with your veterinarian or a nutritionist to determine which supplements you require and how much you should be feeding. If you would like to know more about assessing and developing diets for racing greyhounds, book yourself into one of GRV’s Nutrition Workshops with Dr Ray Ferguson. Dr Ferguson provides a comprehensive presentation about the nutritional requirements of racing greyhounds and then teaches participants to calculate the energy, protein, fat and carbohydrate content of a home made and commercial diet, highlighting the benefits and pitfalls of different feed options. Don't wait, apply for DNA today!

G

RV would like to remind participants of the requirements to register females for breeding. While GRV has implemented a short-term initiative which may assist participants who are under time pressure to get DNA results back, this involves additional steps (including a participant signing a GRV waiver) and can be avoided if DNA is done early. For a female to be eligible to breed, participants must ensure their greyhound has DNA results registered with Greyhounds Australasia. Steps how to do this are as follows: 1. Contact GA and apply for a DNA kit 2. Take the kit and the greyhound to your vet

3. Vet will complete the sample and post to the lab 4. After processing, the lab will inform GA and DNA number will be attached to the greyhound’s record via FastTrack 5. If all other requirements have been met (see right for PINK CARD registration) the greyhound will be ready to complete the registration. GRV recommends applying for your DNA kit as early as possible to allow sufficient time for DNA results to be returned to Greyhounds Australasia and recorded before the greyhound is in season. The turnaround of the DNA result can be somewhere between two and six weeks, dependent on the Lab.

For more information please contact Greyhounds Australasia at admin@galtd.org.au or 9548 3500. To find out more about registering for a Pink Card, including fees, exemptions, stud masters and FSI technician responsibilities, go to: grv.org.au/pinkcard

Waterloo Cup to cap a massive month of coursing By Andrew Copley

A

ugust will be a busy month with the National Coursing Association as the 2019 season draws to a close.

The NCAV has been thrilled with the strong entries for coursing this season and highlighted the number of greyhounds going back to the circle with success. “It’s a chance for greyhound racing fans to watch the essence of our sport as two canine athletes go head to head, then make sure you use the Fasttrack Tracking option and follow the dogs that impress when they go back to the circle track for a healthy profit,” said NCAV President Peter Craig with a grin after he backed Amy Amour at her Bendigo win on 26 July, five days after coursing at Benalla.

as a winner of Victoria’s oldest greyhound race dating back almost 150 years. “There are a number of quality Waterloo Cup prospects this year and with a couple more meetings before then a few more names are no doubt going to stand out,” Craig said. If you can’t make it to the Waterloo Cup, be sure to tune into GRV’s Facebook Page for the live stream of the coveted final course and interview with winning connections on Sunday 25 August. For more on the Waterloo Cup, see Page 28.

This month’s coursing action kicks off with the Western Saws Cup at Lang Lang on 4 August, followed by the Werribee Cup at Longwood on 11 August. And, of course, there is coursing’s holy grail, the 2019 Waterloo Cup at Longwood on 24 and 25 August, with more than $25,000 in prize money on offer across a number of events throughout the weekend.

Bees On Fire stretches out with his owners at the Werribee Football Club, has been a coursing revelation.

If you’ve never been to a Waterloo Cup, do yourself a favour and come along to witness a new champion join the ranks Peter Craig talks up some of this year’s leading Waterloo Cup contenders:

BEAR LEFT – Ray Henness (Heathcote) Last year’s Waterloo Cup winner. May not be racing at quite the level of last year but still in the mix.

CABIN FEVER – Daniel Pell (Toolleen) A very impressive Benalla winner recently and is in the very capable hands of Daniel Pell. GEHRIG – Scott Stefanos (Longwood) Comes to coursing due to his bad box manners but has had no such issues with the coursing slips and Longwood is his home track.

BARRACUDA FOZZ – Brian Fothergill (Numerkah) The winner of two classics already this season, the latest a runaway victory in the Victorian Derby. His only hiccup this season was on the Longwood track, but now a more seasoned galloper and a very impressive style of dog.

BEES ON FIRE – Mark Johnson (Drouin) The form dog of the season with Cup wins and form on the track. Trainer Mark Johnson has this first season courser flying.

RACING PROGRAM CHANGES

start to improve the racing population.

D

GRV are continually monitoring the active racing population and if required will modify the program to cater for more maiden races to enable these greyhounds to move through the grades.

ue to on-going low nominations, from Monday 12 August all Aged Prizemoney Meetings (APM) will be amended to Tier 3 meetings until further notice. Eligibility for Tier 3 racing requires greyhounds be ranked 250+ and have not run faster than the time standard for that track published in the GRV Grading Guidelines in up to its last 4 starts. During this period, ‘hybrid’ race meetings (for greyhounds ranked 250+ or 275+) will continue to be programmed at Level 2 meetings. Rankings races will only be conducted at these meetings if insufficient nominations are received for the graded events.

News

T

he Code of Practice - in a short few months, it applies. It changes little about the high standard of care that participants already apply every day. But a lot changes regarding paper or records to be created and maintained by participants both for their property and for each greyhound. GOTBA Vic has liaised with GRV on most of its Code of Practice material available at https://greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/codeof-practice. I urge participants to look at it now. I also encourage as many as possible – but particularly if you are the main person responsible for keeping greyhounds at a property – to attend information sessions about the Code. The key things to remember in preparing: • ‘Grandfathering’ of your current facilities – thanks mainly to the GOTBA, you do not need to rebuild your current (pre Jan 2020) facilities to comply with the Code, until the earlier of the end of their effective life or if GRV identifies safety/welfare issues related to them;

• Establishment Health Management Plan (EHMP) – each property where non-retired greyhounds are kept must have one. Do it ASAP. It must be signed off by a vet, and GRV must be told this has occurred. GRV has a proforma - see website above - that is useful and many can simply complete – BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE to use it. You can create your own or you can amend the GRV version, as long as you cover the mandatory topics. GOTBA Vic recommends making changes to GRV’s EHMP protocols, at minimum, called ‘Preparing a greyhound for rehoming’ and ‘exercise, environmental

enrichment and socialisation for each class of greyhound’ to reflect what you will actually do at your property if that differs from GRV proforma or the Code. Remember, your vet still needs to sign off. • Vet Agreement – most will have one already. Many of those agreements will not comply with what the Code now requires of a Vet Agreement. If so, it needs to be redone. Speak with your vet. • Record- keeping – The Code requires more of it, particularly at an individual greyhound level. GRV has informed us it is attempting to develop a Fasttrack solution for the new requirements. In addition to GRV material, GOTBA Vic will have some additional documents for members on our website - www. gotbav.org.au - around EHMP completion (things to consider amending in the GRV proforma), a proforma Vet Agreement and records (the latter in particular if Fasttrack changes are not made in time).

The Greyhound Owners, Trainers and Breeders Association (GOTBA) of Victoria is a not-for profit incorporated association, run by a committee of volunteers who work towards the constant improvement of the sport on behalf of member and their greyhounds. GOTBA Committee: Lynton Hogan (President), Robert Britton & Sandra Reed (Co-Vice Presidents), Gayle Osbourne (Secretary), John Reid, Karen Leek, Geoff Miles, Stan Ralph and Jess Spoljaric (General Committee).

Testing Dates Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au All sessions for the next 3 months are listed on this page, with later dates released each month. To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: •

have a current C5 vaccination AS PER THE NEW REQUIREMENTS* described below and given at least 10 days before the pre-entry assessment; and not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“wind-down period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. The ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at:

greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session. Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. NOTE: The entry fee for greyhounds into the GAP has been waived permanently. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

GAP VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS

The simplest method to achieve this is an injectable C3 vaccine plus the standard intra-nasal Kennel Cough vaccine. If you or your veterinarian have any questions on these requirements please contact GRV.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

GRV asks participants to be aware that session dates and times are subject to change in hot weather. The GRV Hot Weather Policy is now being applied to GAP Pre-Entry Assessment dates. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 32 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions may be subject to a time change. For days when the temperature is forecast to be 38 degrees or above, pre-entry assessment sessions will be cancelled. GRV will notify participants by phone as soon as possible for all session changes and cancellations. Wherever possible, GRV will endeavour to replace cancelled sessions with new sessions in the local area.

AUGUST 2019

From 1 March 2018, your greyhound must have had the following vaccinations: • Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis (C3) within the last 2½ years (or within the last 1 year if the last C3 was given earlier than 12 months of age); and • Kennel Cough (both Bordetella and Parainfluenza) within the last 6 months where the Bordetella component is given as an intra-nasal or oral vaccine.
