CEO’s Update

I

t was another busy month in the sport around Victoria. On 12 September, Horsham Greyhound Racing Club’s new track was officially opened by the Mayor of Horsham Rural City Council after a redevelopment that used mainly local contractors and suppliers. The new wider track was designed using data modelling from the University of Technology Sydney to reduce incidents and interference and includes new sand, fencing and safety rails, braking lure motors, head-on cameras, drop-on boxes for 410m races and starting boxes for trialling puppies, along with upgraded irrigation and electrical systems.

It now provides a whole new level of greyhound safety and welfare that has already attracted national interest and a better viewing experience for spectators.

GRV will formally monitor the outcomes derived from the track design modifications with a view to determine whether these changes may be applicable to other Victorian tracks. Also, there is wide-spread interest in monitoring the outcomes achieved.

The opening was celebrated with the Horsham Club’s annual TAB Great Chase Community Day for local disability organisations, which will be followed by other Community Days at tracks around Victoria during October, leading up to the TAB Great Chase Final at The Meadows on 25 October.

Off the track, the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) once again had a stand at the Royal Melbourne Show from September 23 to October 3, this year in the Channel 7 Family Fun Pavilion. GAP volunteers and greyhounds showed visitors why greyhounds make such great pets and they were joined by GAP Ambassador, Bernie Vince on Wednesday 27 September.

Despite the very strong outcomes for the sport in recent months, we still need to ensure that the welfare of the dogs and the integrity of the sport remain our key priorities. So, from October, GRV is rolling out new Local Rules covering re-homing, health injury reporting, export requirements and registration processes that will align Victoria with other states and racing codes. GRV is also developing a comprehensive new plan to endeavour to reduce track injuries and both this plan and the new rules are discussed in more detail in this issue.

It has been an intense two years of reform for greyhound racing and we feel we have established ourselves as a strong, proactive regulator as we work with our participants to embark on genuine cultural change in Victorian greyhound racing. This is vital as we ensure a strong, sustainable industry for years to come.

One of the key events this month is the Geelong Cup on 27 October, one of Australia’s leading regional greyhound race meets, while the following night The Meadows will host its Group 1 Topgun night. Both events provide an opportunity to see which dogs are looking competitive for the Melbourne Cup in November, and another spring and summer of great racing.

2017-18 will be a busy year as GRV transitions from an industry and GRV transformation to a more business as usual environment.

In other racing news, the Healesville Cup on 10 September was hotly contested by one of the strongest fields in its history which included many Group 1 racers. I congratulate Zinzan Brooke’s trainers and owner on another great win, following his triumph at the Shepparton Cup in July. On the same night at Sandown Park, Bewildering was crowned Australia’s fastest dog at the Speed Star match race series, following his victory in the Bill Collins Speed Star in May this year.

SURVEY FOR GREYHOUND RACING PARTICIPANTS

reyhound Racing Victoria is seeking advice from participants about the demand for more bullrings (small circular training tracks) at race clubs to assist with the education of greyhounds.

The Sale Greyhound Racing Club is the first Victorian greyhound club to have a bullring constructed, and this has been in operation for several months. Sale’s bullring is state-of-the-art, machine-operated by a lure driver and includes starting boxes.

Any future bullrings installed by GRV at clubs would be of a similar standard and design.

REVISED PRIZE MONEY & BREEDING SUSTAINABILITY PACKAGE Following feedback received from stakeholders on options for distributing additional prize money, GRV has revised its proposal to provide an improved balance with a new package of $2.55M in additional prizemoney and up to $1.40M in new prizemoney and bonuses available to be shared between owners, trainers and breeders.

Two prizemoney options are currently being considered, each worth an extra $2.55M annually in additional prizemoney. Both options focus directly on increasing prize money to be shared between owners and trainers at the lower levels of racing whilst maintaining Metro Level 1 prize money at current levels: Option 1

Increase bottom tiers of Level 2 & all of Level 3 prize money i. Level 2 (Provincial Full Stakes) +$1.18M (+6.1%) ii. Level 3 (Tier 3, Healesville, All Maiden, Rankings Meetings) +$1.37M (+21.6%)

Increase all Level 2 & Level 3 minimum prize money by just under 10% i. Level 2 (Provincial Full Stakes) +$1.96M (+10.0%) ii. Level 3 (Tier 3, Healesville, All Maiden, Rankings Meetings) +$0.59M (+9.3%)

The original proposal to increase trainers’ Starters’ Fees to $80 per runner has now been removed from the package. The new prizemoney proposal will mean Travel & Starters’ Fees remain at their current levels of $70 per trainer and an additional $10 per starter at all meetings.

The package also includes a proposal focussed on encouraging and incentivising sustainable breeding in Victoria, by allocating up to $1.4M in annual prizemoney bonuses on around 1,900 selected Victorian races for owners and breeders of Vic Bred greyhounds in a new Breeding Package. All Vic Bred greyhounds of all ages will be eligible for the Breeding Package with no nomination fees payable to be eligible.

The increases are to be implemented from 1 November 2017.

GRV's Manager Racing Operations, Scott Robins says greyhounds of lesser ability will soon be able to earn a lot more prize money than they would have in the past. Further, trainers can afford to be less fussy about the greyhounds they keep in their kennel as the issue of not gaining a run due to excessive nominations will no longer exist.

"A lot of trainers who have had high break-in standards for the greyhounds they bring into their kennel would do well to rethink that strategy,” Robins said. “Traditionally, dogs have had to run a certain time, be able to run a certain distance or be under a particular age before some trainers will take them. And that’s been fair enough as trainers have wanted to be sure that their dogs will have no trouble getting a start and that they are competitive enough to have a reasonable chance of earning

"We need as many dogs as possible in the system to fill all fields. Greyhounds who previously would have been retired at a young age for being on the slower side will now have a much greater chance of establishing a competitive racing career. It will be the Graders’ job to find another seven greyhounds of similar ability to race against to achieve even fields,” he said.

Robins added that participants should also keep racing their greyhounds for longer, if they are still fit and healthy.

"While greyhounds may slow down a little bit with age, that’s not always a good reason to retire them. As long as the dogs are fit, sound and enjoying racing, people should continue to race them, as we will provide more opportunities for them,” he said.

GRV’s prize money increase is expected to be rolled out before the end of 2017.

All greyhounds involved in this series are bred in Victoria and aged between 16-28 months of age, meaning they are at or near the beginning of their racing careers.

A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR GREYHOUND TRAINERS It can be tough going for people with little or no industry experience to get into greyhound racing.

Common questions newcomers may ask include: Where do I buy a dog? Should I trust what a seller is telling me about a dog? Who is going to train it for me? What are the training fees? What happens if a trainer decides they don’t want to train my greyhound anymore?

This is where greyhound trainers and experienced participants can lend their expertise.

Many trainers are regularly approached by people wanting to get involved in greyhound ownership, but finding suitable race dogs to buy and ones people are willing to sell is often a challenge.

The greyhound racing industry was saddened by the sudden passing of Ken Virtue on September 27. Ken had an association with greyhound racing dating back to the 1970s as a trainer, rearer and studmaster.

“Ken also trained some top-class greyhounds including Disco Dishlicker, Jamb Kid and Banjo Boy. He stood Ginger Magee at stud in the 1990s and he and Michelle moved to Lang Lang about 12 months ago having made the decision to scale down and train two or three greyhounds while continuing to stand Banjo Boy at stud.”

“Ken was very articulate and well-educated,” said close friend Andrew Varasdi, who was associated with a number of greyhounds in conjunction with Ken. “He was an accountant by trade but greyhound racing was his passion and he got such a kick out of training winners. Ken and wife Michelle ran a commercial rearing farm in Tooradin called Delta Park for many years and built a great reputation having reared countless winners, some of which went to stud including Black Shiraz and Nitro Burst.”

One such example is Saahd, a greyhound trained by Gary Ennis (pictured left) who had 70 starts for 16 wins and earned more than $45,000 in prize money. Among Saahd’s standout racetrack performances was when he was involved in a historic deadheat in the prestigious 2014 Puppy Championship final at Healesville.

While Saahd’s hard-chasing qualities were on full display in his come-from-behind performance that day at Healesville, it was a different story when he arrived at a pre-entry assessment into the Greyhound Adoption Program in Seymour some time later.

BAXTER GAP REACHES DIZZY HEIGHTS

Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton congratulated Michelle Fisher who manages the Baxter centre and the GAP team on achieving this marvellous milestone.

Nathan Kriening and fiancée Ashlee Cooper felt sure they had found the right dog when they met Dizzy, who has been renamed Jet out of consideration for Nathan’s human mate Dizzy.

“He is jet black and fast so it’s appropriate,” says Nathan.

It was Scooby’s advanced years that started Nathan thinking about getting another companion for Digger so he wasn’t on his own when the older dog does eventually pass away.

“Dizzy was the sixth dog we saw and we fell in love with him.

We were looking for a dog that was a good match for us who would get along with our kelpies. We are both outgoing people and he was the first dog to came up to both of us.

He wasn’t shy at all,” Nathan said. “He is definitely fitting into the clan.”

“GAP’s success is an indication of the growing demand for these wonderful, gentle dogs. In the 2017 financial year Victoria’s GAP centres re-homed over 1300 greyhounds, which is a record. GAP is a world-class re-homing program, you won’t find a better program anywhere.”

Ms Fisher said the centre is open most weekends, by appointment only. She said adoptions began slowly in 2015, averaging three dogs each weekend, which grew to four dogs last year and the centre now averages six dog every weekend.

“We get people coming from the northern suburbs and the inner city, all through the south and from Gippsland. There is a lot on interest on this side of town and it has been terrific that GAP has been able to grow with the demand,” Michelle said.

They went to Baxter “just looking”. They met a few dogs, then they were introduced to Dizzy. The new addition to their home in Keysborough must also get along with two kelpies, four-year-old Digger and Scooby who is fourteen and a half.

It has been very successful, and we are soon to open a dog café, City GAP on the edge of the city – a community hub where prospective greyhound fosterers, adopters and greyhound owners can meet, enjoy each others’ company and get information about GAP.

The number is a milestone for the centre at Baxter which was established just over two years ago to support the main GAP headquarters in Seymour and service the south-eastern suburbs and Gippsland.

AMENDED REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS From 1 October 2017, Greyhound Racing Victoria will determine whether an applicant is a ‘fit and proper person’ before considering whether to register them as a participant.

New applications for registration received by GRV on or after 1 October 2017 will be assessed against the new ‘fit and proper person’ requirement.

All existing registered participants will also be required to disclose any relevant disciplinary or criminal matters which have occurred on or after 1 October 2017. The change brings Victoria into line with racing codes in other states and territories.

Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said the introduction of a fit and proper person requirement was another step forward for Victorian greyhound racing.

“The overwhelming majority of people involved in Victorian greyhound racing are good, honest, hard-working people who are doing the right thing,” Mr Clayton said. “Introducing this requirement only further strengthens the standards GRV has in place to ensure people of the highest quality character and with the right priorities can be involved in greyhound racing

in our state.”

As part of assessing an application for registration, GRV will have to satisfy itself that an applicant is a fit and proper person for registration having regard to matters such as honesty, integrity, and character - it is not about physical fitness.

The GRV Board must be satisfied that the applicant is "fit and proper" before the Board can approve a person’s application for registration. Every applicant who is at least 18 years old must provide the Board with a National Police Certificate and/or may be required to provide consent for GRV to obtain a NPC on the applicant’s behalf as part of their application for registration.

Applicants will also be required to make declarations regarding all racing related disciplinary action taken against them, regardless of code. Once registered, a person must continue to be a fit and proper person to maintain their registration. From 1 October 2017, all applicants will also have an obligation to proactively disclose any new disciplinary or criminal matters to GRV.

Fanta Bale is edging closer to earning $1 million in prize money – will October 28 be the night?

MILLION-DOLLAR MILESTONE IN SIGHT

By Andrew Copley The hype surrounding Fanta Bale continues to grow as she climbs towards $1 million dollars in prize money. Having already surpassed $900,000 in stake earnings, the versatile champion could reach the magical milestone as early as October 28 at The Meadows, fitness pending.

The MGRA will host two invitationals that evening - the $150,000 to-the-winner Topgun (525m) and $75,000 to-thewinner Topgun Stayers (725m) – and it is conceivable that

Fanta Bale will receive an invitation to both. Alternatively, trainer Robert Britton may choose to bypass both races and instead nominate for heats of the Hume Cup (600m) on the same night, with the final to be run on thoroughbred racing’s Melbourne Cup eve (November 6).

Britton believes 600 metres is Fanta Bale’s ideal distance.

Only two Australian greyhounds - Fernando Bale and Dyna Double One – have more than $1 million in prize money to their names.

NEW AND AMENDED RULES TO IMPROVE ANIMAL WELFARE AND INTEGRITY OUTCOMES Another key enhancement under the changes includes a strengthening of Victoria’s local rule 42.6, from 1 October 2017, that introduces minimum re-homing requirements. Under the changes, the expectations regarding reasonable re-homing efforts required by owners are clearly specified, with failure to comply with these enhanced requirements a Serious Offence under the rules.

The GRV rule changes, building on many welfare initiatives already put in place, include new re-homing obligations, notification of intention to euthanase, tightening export requirements, setting a minimum age for breeding and nomination, and requiring trainers to report health and injury issues on track.

Participants will also have to comply with fit and proper requirements as part of the registration process, bringing Victoria into line with other States and racing codes. SCIENCE LEADS TO SAFETY AS REDEVELOPED HORSHAM TRACK IS OFFICIALLY REOPENED

“Good track design is important for the greyhounds’ safety. By reducing major risk factors we reduce the chance for incidents and interference so dogs can race more safely,” he said. “At Horsham, every aspect of this redevelopment has a science overlay to it, with animal welfare as the overriding priority.”

The majority of the work was carried out by local contractors including civil construction, electricians, irrigation experts, builders and fencing contractors, providing valuable jobs and investment for the local community. Key elements of the redevelopment include: • widening the track by an average of 1.2 metres • increasing the camber on bends to about 10 per cent (up from 8.2 per cent) to provide smooth transitions, reducing crowding and the potential for injuries and interference • replacement of the lure and safety rail and installation of a new braking lure motor • complete replacement of the track surface with new sand • upgrading irrigation and electrical systems and adding new perimeter fencing • new head-on cameras, drop-on boxes for 410m races and starting boxes for trialling puppies

In addition to the $800,000 project, upgrades totalling $400,000 have been carried out at the track as part of GRV’s five-year capital works program. The 43-year-old track was closed last October to bring it up to an appropriate standard.

In conjunction with the celebration, the Horsham GRC also hosted its annual Community Day for local groups that care for the physically and intellectually disabled as part of GRV’s Great Chase community series.

orsham’s redeveloped greyhound racing track showcases design features that put greyhound safety first, Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said at the official reopening of the track on September 12.

Clayton said GRV was working with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to develop innovations that would improve track safety in Victoria, and there has been significant national interest in these innovative developments.

Using GRV data, UTS modelling pinpointed the hot spots for dogs on the old track, identifying potential causes for interference and crowding. Racing resumed on 1 August, with racing now conducted over 410m and 485m. A 675m start may be introduced later.

The Mayor of Horsham Rural City Council Cr Pam Clarke officially opened the track, and was joined by GRV Board member Emmett Dunne.

“Greyhound racing is an integral part of the Wimmera with the industry contributing around $3.5 million directly and indirectly to the Wimmera economy each year,” Dunne said.

HOW COURSING AND PERSISTENCE TURNED AROUND ‘PROBLEM CHILD’ TYSON

yson Trump was just two months shy of his third birthday when he made his long-awaited TAB track debut on Healesville Cup day (September 10). His trainer Peter Craig (pictured with Tyson Trump) reveals the pathway that led to his greyhound’s twolength win that day as a red-hot $1.60 favourite.

Q. When did Tyson Trump come into your care and at what stage of his education/development was he?

I was given Tyson to train in July last year when he was 20 months old. He had been to the education centre twice and wasn't going too well. He would chase well behind the drag lure but not the carriage (regular) lure. I was having some fun with his brother and sister and suggested to Leigh (Jennings), his owner/breeder, that I have a try using the drag lure at Lang Lang and hopefully progress from there. I do enjoy a challenge.

Q. Why did it take so long for Tyson to have his first TAB start?

Q. Tyson coursed a number of times during the 2017 season. How did he fare?

Q. How has coursing helped Tyson?

Tyson isn't the sharpest tool in the shed, so the repetition of chasing the lure a few times in a day is probably the thing that got it through a thick skull! He is now a very fit greyhound that is a lot more experienced than the maiden dogs he met at Healesville and I think that experience is very important with maidens. It isn't the first time I have coursed dogs before they went to the track and they always get out of maiden class early in their careers.

Q. Were you ever of the mindset that Tyson may not ever be a TAB track dog?

Yes, most weeks between July 2016 and May 2017. Tyson got his racing name just after the US election, I told Leigh, Tyson would have to win the unwinnable just like Donald (Trump)!

However, the plan was always to race him on a TAB track once the coursing season finished, if he was chasing well enough.

Q. He was a hot favourite ($1.60) in his debut win. What do you put that down to?

Either the Corporate bookies have never seen him trial, or someone at the ICG meeting that week took me seriously when I declared him.

Q. What does the future hold for Tyson? Has he got potential to race on the circle? Will he return for the 2018 coursing season?

I hope he likes the drive to Healesville. I'm not too sure about the circle but never say never. If he gets the hang of straight track racing and his times start to replicate what he can run behind the drag lure then it's possible. Tyson has now won first up at the Coursing and first up at Healesville, so watch out if he appears somewhere on the circle (laughs)! *Peter Craig is the President of the National Coursing Association

The Coursing season is relatively short so whilst he started at most meetings, seven race days in four months certainly isn't overtaxing for a race dog and it's an easy task to keep him up for this length of time and at the same time work on his issues.

Tyson started the season with a bang! After success at a Catch on to Coursing meeting at Lang Lang (in April) and then the first Lang Lang meeting of the year, we were hopeful he may progress further but he struggled away from Lang Lang. Whilst his record for the season was ordinary, a few of the days saw him just go down in quick time or to some handy greyhounds.

But he did progress and when given the opportunity in a final, he proved the three runs in a day were right up his alley.

Finishing runner-up to Better Than This in a final at Lang Lang by less than two lengths showed he has ability. The key to the season was to get him going at Longwood for the Waterloo

Cup meeting and whilst the season didn't end like it started, he wasn't disgraced.

It hasn't been until recently that I was confident he would complete the course at a TAB track. Tyson has been in the kennel for 14 months and has rarely taken two steps forward in a row - it's usually been one step forward, one backwards, or in the case of Sandown it was 30 metres forward and turned around and came 30 metres back, or when he stopped to check out the back of the 520 boxes in a 311 trial at Cranbourne. You might get this from a pup during early education but not at two plus years of age. I have had some success in the past if you can make small progressive steps with problem children like Tyson. Getting them to chase the drag lure with conviction is the first step, then coursing the dog behind the drag is an easy progression. Once the dog learns the ritual of being put in the slips at the coursing, I have found they seem to associate being put in the slips with the excitement of the chase and are less worried by the carriage lure and your chances of getting them to improve. From there the next step is coursing behind the carriage lure and Longwood is perfect for that. If they can get through that step the progression to a track like Healesville is possible.

In September I attended the GBOTA’S National Conference, where all state representatives came together to report on the health of greyhound racing in their respective states. It is important that we support each other by looking at best practice going forward. It is obvious that Victoria has much to offer the smaller racing communities in how we are overcoming the threats to the future viability of our sport.

Participant confidence should be greatly enhanced when we finally get a Code of Practice that is workable and affordable. The GOTBA (Victoria) Executive was invited to the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) for a meeting to discuss how best to change the draft Code of Practice for the Keeping of Racing Greyhounds so that rather than be prescriptive (telling us how) it should be outcome based. We all want what is best for our dogs and as trainers, breeders and owners we have years of experience that ensures that we know how best to achieve these desired outcomes.

Finally, some good news about the certainty of being able to keep your greyhounds. Four years ago, the GOTBA instigated meetings with the Melbourne Planning Department to

try and get a ‘Right of Use’ to have an agreed number of greyhounds on your property, provided you met certain standards of property development. This was in relation to size of the property, zonings and setbacks from boundaries and neighbouring residences, also considering construction of kennels. Our original aim was to have this passed so that you would not have to apply for a permit if you complied with the set standards, however in the document just released you must still apply for a council permit. The best part is that providing you comply you cannot be refused a permit. We are currently seeking clarification on the planning document, as some parts are unclear and open to interpretation. However, we see this as a big win for participants, especially on small acreage, as now objectors cannot stop you having a reasonable number of greyhounds as long as you comply with the planning rules.

We are currently working with GRV to set up a scientific study of track surfaces and preparation. It is vital that we find the best possible racing surfaces that are consistently prepared to the same standards to ensure the safety of our dogs.

We have lobbied to have a much-needed breeding stimulus package to support breeders now and into the future. Our proposals would see financial support for people wishing to breed now and also bonuses for successful breeders with dogs currently racing. Knowing most people are having difficulty selling pups we see syndication as the best way forward, and this is currently being worked on to open up more opportunities for selling pups.

Ther GOTBA Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for 6:00pm on Sunday, November 26 at Sandown Park. This intends to be an open forum to allow members to express their ideas on current issues and how they would like to see GOTBA represent them going forward. This is a great opportunity to come together and exchange ideas, so that GOTBA can do what is best for the future of our association and the wonderful sport of greyhound racing.

IMPROVING TRACK SAFETY A MAJOR PRIORITY GRV’s Board, management and clubs are committed to reducing the number of serious racetrack injuries as a critical priority for the industry.

GRV has worked with clubs over the past couple of years on a number of initiatives to help reduce injuries and is now implementing or considering a range of further initiatives to address this problem including: • Forums with On Track Vets (OTV) and Racetrack Managers to review data, discuss the issue and develop further options • Enhancement of OTV training • The potential need for a new rule requiring greyhounds which haven’t raced for three months or more to perform a solo clearance trial at a track before their nomination is accepted • GRV to conduct a statistical assessment of risk factors associated with racetrack injury and provide a report to OTVs identifying greyhounds which may require a more detailed pre-race veterinary inspection • Looking at measures to increase the amount of time OTVs spend assessing greyhounds immediately prior to racing • Fixed cameras to be installed on the first turn and in all catching pens at every track • Thorough inspection by Stewards of the area/position on the track where serious injuries have occurred • Stewards and OTVs to provide more detailed reports in situations where track deaths have occurred • Epidemiological review of all major and catastrophic injuries that occur on Victorian racetracks to refine the understanding of the key risk factors • Further research to be undertaken on the location and operation of catching pens, including training and accreditation of catching pen staff as suitable to perform the task.

GREYHOUND RACING MAINSTAY RETIRES Pat Griffin’s (pictured) long-serving career in greyhound racing administration has drawn to a close after she retired from GRV on September 28.

Having started her career in greyhound racing with the Melbourne Greyhound Racing Association at Olympic Park in the 1970s alongside the late GRV Hall of Fame inductee, Ken Carr, Pat ran the club from an operational perspective including managing the old greyhound totalizator betting system.

After departing the MGRA in the early 1990s, Pat held key administration positions at the Sandown GRC and Geelong GRC before moving to GRV in 2004, where she performed a variety of roles including managing The Watchdog form service, Executive Assistant to the CEO and more recently in Human Resources.

“Pat has always been a reliable, efficient and hard-working person…someone who knows that it’s not only important to be at work, but when you are, you do the best job possible. Pat’s contribution will never be underestimated,” Shaw said.

“Pat was basically second in charge in the MGRA’s halcyon days at Olympic Park,” recalled GRV’s COO - Corporate Services, Robert Shaw. “Whilst Ken Carr is regarded as one of the industry’s great administrators, he knew the importance of having good people under him. Pat was his go-to person and she did an enormous amount of work behind the scenes in making Olympic Park a fantastic operation.

ICG PLAYS KEY ROLE IN ATTEMPT TO STIMULATE QUALITY BREEDING

By Andrew Copley Breeding numbers, feeding options and the evolution of the role of race clubs were among the key items discussed at the ICG meeting held on September 7.

GRV’s Board and Management recognise low breeding numbers as a critical issue for the industry, and as such sought advice from the ICG on how to turn this situation around. ICG members put forward a number of ideas and suggestions. GRV is to formulate a proposal aimed at stimulating quality breeding.

Having regard for the high number of positive swabs that participants and the RADB attribute to contaminated knackery meat, a review comparing kangaroo/chicken with knackery meat was presented to the ICG for comment. This prompted a lively discussion, with the ICG requesting further analysis before reconvening on the issue.

The subject of community and club engagement was discussed, with ICG members expressing that race clubs are an important conduit between GRV and participants, and the interface between the industry and the broader community. It was suggested that encouraging participants to nominate a home club/s would assist in strengthening relationships between clubs and their local/ regular participants.

Items to be included for future discussion by the ICG: - greyhound muscle manipulators / canine chiropractors - the shortage of vets working in the greyhound industry and the lack of vets with greyhound racing expertise - the possibility of a return of short-course racing at metropolitan venues

Q & A WITH THE ICG’S SHELDON HAMILTON Q. When and why did you join the ICG? I was fortunate to be given the opportunity to join ICG in May this year. I want to put something back into the sport and now I have the time to commit.

Q. How have you found your experiences on the ICG so far?

I really enjoy listening to every single person on this committee. Not one person comes with their own agenda.

Every agenda item is not just hearsay. It's documented and has a to do action further up the line. Because of ICG I know the GRV Board will make more informed decisions based on feedback we collect and present.

Q. What is your home track?

Ballarat. I'm very fortunate I live in the birth place of the Australian sport, in fact I’m only 668m from Eureka Stockade.

Q. What is your background in greyhound racing and how did you get involved?

I’m a third-generation participant and, from age 12, dad (John

Hamilton) would take me to the dogs, mostly on Ballarat Cup night. From the age of 18 my mates and I met up every Wednesday night at the dogs. I have bred and owned many greyhounds over 30 years and trained for the past 10 years.

Q. Best greyhounds you’ve been associated with?

As an owner I’ve had six greyhounds that won at least one city race. Bewdy Mahte, Vermont and Triple Agent have won mixed grade city races, and to me that’s as good as a group win.

Q. Do you have an occupation aside from training greyhounds?

I have a sales agency with DDS Sharp, and our showroom is conveniently around the corner from Morshead Park (Ballarat GRC).

Q. What are your interests outside of greyhound racing?

Sport is my greatest passion. I enjoy seeing sports people under pressure and always like an underdog winning.

Q. Your thoughts on greyhound racing in Victoria?

When I started in greyhound racing we had 7% of TAB turnover.

Today we are a bit above 20%. I’m very appreciative to have the greatest facilities and prize money in the world right at my door step. I want to see greyhound racing have more participation and growth.

WHAT IS THE ICG? In 2016, the Board of Greyhound Racing Victoria appointed an Industry Consultative Group (ICG), with members having appropriate experience and diversity across a number of areas. The ICG meets every six weeks to discuss major issues facing the industry, out of which suggestions are forwarded to GRV’s Board for consideration.

The ICG panel comprises of Judith Bornstein (Chair), Dr Barbara Backhoy, Deborah Churchill, Steven Clarke, Tracey Corneille, Peter Craig, Sheldon Hamilton, Brian Jones, Marg Long, Nicole Lund, Daniel Nugent, Sandra Reed and Tom Welsh.

NEW PLANNING MEASURES A STEP FORWARD Following the Victorian Government’s release of the new planning measures for greyhound facilities in August 2017, GRV is currently working on developing options to help support participants through the planning process.

The new planning requirements were introduced to streamline planning approval processes for new or existing greyhound facilities, so greyhound facility owners and operators know what they can and can’t build. They provide a much-needed set of consistent and measurable requirements to provide clarity for greyhound participants.

The new requirements apply to all land in the Rural Living, Green Wedge, Green Wedge A, Rural Conservation, Farming

and Rural Activity zones. They apply to an application to use land for racing dog keeping and racing dog training or an application to extend an existing facility.

A facility with an existing permit may continue to operate in accordance with the permit without having to obtain a new permit or comply with the new requirements.

NEW PLANNING MEASURES CREATE POSITIVE FUTURE

By Molly Haines Anakie owner, trainer and breeder Sean Cachia believes that the introduction of the new streamlined planning measures is a positive step forward for greyhound racing in Victoria. Cachia has spent the last three years and an estimated $30,000 applying for a 40 racing greyhound permit at his 10 acre property in Anakie.

“The new planning measures provide, not only me as a hobbyist, but also the wider greyhound community with hope and a focus moving forward,” Cachia said. “I see breeding numbers going up and the amount of hobby trainers in the sport increasing because a lot of permit costs will disappear.”

For Cachia and his young family, the new planning measures mean they can continue to breed, rear, educate and train their own greyhounds with hopes of it one day becoming a profitable hobby.

Manager of Animal Welfare Authorised Officers at Greyhound Racing Victoria, Ken Waixel said it is important for participants to be aware that there is a state-wide overhaul of the current application process and, therefore, there are changes to planning permits in all industries.

“If you have questions about the planning permits it is best to contact your local council,” Waixel said. “GRV is working on developing options to help support our participants through the new planning process to make it as easy as possible.”

The RADB determined the appropriate penalty to be disqualification for 12 months with 9 months of that period suspended.

Janine Walker – RADB Hearing 15/08/17 - Various animal welfare charges under the following rules - GAR 106 (1)(c), GAR 106 (2), GAR86(p), GAR106(1)(d) and GAR 86 (h). The periods of disqualification amount to 18 months in total. (Ms Walker has appealed the RADB decision to VCAT and is awaiting the hearing).

“The majority of people there were at the greyhound races for the first time,” Traralgon GRC Manager Steven Clarke said. “They all had a great time watching the races, eating great food and participating in competitions

like ‘Last father standing’, which required participants to choose the winner of six races in a row for the chance to win a night at Crown Casino.”

Although none of the dads managed to select the six winners, a host of other prizes were given away including a flat screen TV, free rounds of golf and car care packages.

Clarke acknowledged the efforts of his staff in bringing the night together.

More than 400 people attended the Traralgon Greyhound Racing Club’s inaugural Father’s Day event on September 1, and the night was such a success that the club is looking forward to doing it all again next year.

Re-homing of all greyhounds is a key goal for GRV. To assist owners with re-homing their greyhounds, GRV made some changes in October 2016 to the GAP pre-entry assessment testing booking process, which is working very well: • Spaces in the pre-entry assessment sessions are now booked through Member Services during office hours on 03 83291100 or by emailing gapbooking@grv.org.au • All sessions for October - December 2017 are listed on this page, with later dates released each month.

• To be eligible for a pre-entry assessment your greyhound must: • have a current C5 vaccination; and • not have been trained, trialled or raced for at least one month (preferably two months) prior to the testing day (“winddown period”). This will increase the likelihood of your greyhound passing the temperament test. A new ‘Racing to Retirement’ information booklet is available through Member Services or at: greyhoundcare.grv.org.au/retirement-from-racing.

• Only three greyhounds per connection can be booked in each pre-entry assessment session.

• Participants must provide a good quality, well fitted wire muzzle when entering a greyhound into GAP. Pre-entry Assessment Booking Number:

Q & A ON GAP PRE-ENTRY ASSESSMENTS Greyhound Adoption Program Manager Larissa Darragh provides an insight into GAP’s pre-entry assessments.

Q. What is the purpose of pre-entry assessments?

The purpose of the pre-entry assessment is to determine if a greyhound is going to be suitable for immediate entry into GAP, or if they will require further socialisation or handling prior to coming to GAP. Q. What is involved in the test and how long does it take?

First, the greyhound will have their microchip scanned to determine their identity. They will then be fitted with a secure collar and a plastic yard muzzle. One GAP assessor will bring them into the assessment yard while the second GAP assessor will handle the small test dog. The greyhound will be allowed to quietly approach the small dog and to smell it – the assessors will allow plenty of time for this to ensure the greyhound does understand that the small, white fluffy thing in front of them is actually a dog. If this goes well the small dog will be allowed to run around, and the behaviour of the greyhound will be noted.

If safe to do so, the greyhound will also be allowed off lead.

The assessment may run from five to ten minutes, depending on each greyhound. GAP assessors are very experienced in reading canine body language and behaviour, and can pick up subtle nuances that the general public may not detect.

Q. Where and how often are pre-entry assessment sessions held?

Pre-entry assessments are usually conducted three times a week, mostly at greyhound race tracks all over Victoria. They are also conducted regularly at GAP Seymour for those participants who find this more convenient or would prefer to have their greyhound assessed away from a racing environment.

Q. What constitutes as a fail at a pre-entry assessment?

Fails include, but are not limited to, the greyhound attempting to bite the small test dog or be excessively rough with the test dog, the greyhound attempting to bite the handler or assessor, the greyhound being excessively fearful or the greyhound having a significant untreated health issue that is going to impact on their ability to find a long-term home.

Q. What happens to a greyhound if it fails the pre-entry assessment?

If the greyhound fails the pre-entry assessment they go home again with their owner or trainer.

Q. What do you say to people who suggest that it is unfair to the greyhounds that pre-entry assessment sessions happen at racetracks?

GAP has 12 months worth of data that confirms that undertaking pre-entry assessments at greyhound racetracks has no impact on the assessment outcome. GAP, however, understands that some participants may feel uncomfortable about undergoing a pre-entry assessment at a race track so offers regular assessments at the GAP kennels in Seymour.

Q. What do you say to people who suggest that pre-entry assessments don’t reflect real world situations and are the equivalent to what racing participants would call a ‘stir up’?

While all greyhounds must be on-leash on public, other dogs are not necessarily so, and there are situations where, contrary to the law, greyhounds are not on-leash. The temperament testing of greyhounds must take this into account to ensure they are safe in these situations.

Q. How can you book your greyhound in for a pre-entry assessment?

Please call Member Services to book in your greyhound. The greyhound must not have raced for at least four weeks prior to presentation for assessment, and must also have a current C5 vaccination.

Q. What does a greyhound need to do to pass its pre-entry assessment?

Q. What happens to the greyhound once it has passed?

Once the greyhound has passed the assessment, their ownership will immediately be transferred to GAP. They will be fitted with a name tag, treated with Advocate, and put into the GAP trailer to be returned to the GAP kennels. After settling into GAP the greyhound will undergo a second (more comprehensive) assessment, be de-sexed and have a health check (and dental), then either be made available for adoption or be sent to foster care for further training.

Helpful hints • While a greyhound requires a minimum of a 28-day wind down from racing to be booked in for a pre-entry assessment, a minimum eight weeks is recommended.

• A current C5 and GAP transfer forms to be completed and returned to the office at least 14 days prior to your assessment date to avoid cancellation of your booking.

• If you are unable to attend your scheduled pre-entry assessment date, please call our office early to ensure we can offer the place to somebody else who is waiting for an assessment. Lodging your GAP paperwork shortly after making your booking increases your chances of an earlier date being offered to you if a cancellation arises.

GREYHOUND MONTHLY VICTORIA

In order to pass its pre-entry assessment the greyhound needs to be sociable with the small dog, and not attempt to grab or be excessively rough with it. The greyhound also needs to be sociable with people and not be so fearful that the assessors are unable to catch him in the test yard. GAP accepts greyhounds who have had broken or amputated limbs, greyhounds with pannus, and other health issues (please discuss with GAP if your greyhound has a specific health issue prior to booking your dog in for assessment).

'BOOMER' ON BOARD

By Luke Holmesby AFL games record holder Brent 'Boomer' Harvey (pictured) is the new ambassador for Victorian greyhound racing. The former North Melbourne great, who retired at the end of 2016, has joined Greyhound Racing Victoria to promote the sport to a wider audience.

Harvey will be attending key greyhound racing events, fronting promotional campaigns and spreading the word about greyhound racing being a sport for all.

The five-time Kangaroos best and fairest winner said he was excited about joining GRV in the role.

“I’m a big fan of greyhound racing – it’s such a unique, fun and exciting sport and it means so much to so many people around Victoria,” Harvey said. “I love the idea of being able to tell some of the great stories that are out there.”

Harvey said he found the inclusive nature of greyhound racing to be the most appealing part of the sport.

“It’s very accessible, anyone can come along to watch and be a part of it, it’s a lot of fun and the dogs are so athletic – it’s quite amazing to watch them do what they do best when you’re live at the track,” he said. “A day or night at the greyhound races is a really enjoyable experience and we want to let everyone know that if they haven’t already they should come down to their local club to see what it’s all about.”

GREYHOUND RACING AND AFL COMBINE IN SUPPORT FOR CHARITY The Paula Boota-trained Fitz Tate with owner Maurice Fitzpatrick, 14-year-old Connor Clarke and Craig Hutchison at Ronald McDonald House.

By Luke Holmesby Greyhound Racing Victoria’s Chase for Charity promotion with Croc Media has been a runaway success with more than $30,000 raised for charity.

The Chase For Charity concept pits Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering and Dr Turf in a competition to see who can raise the most for their nominated charity, according to their weekly greyhound racing bets on Croc Media’s Off The Bench radio program. Football media personality Hutchison has raised more than $10,000 for his nominated charity Ronald McDonald House Charities Australia and visited the house earlier this week to meet Fitz Tate, a brindle dog who raised $728 for the cause after a recent win at Bendigo.

Also in attendance was Fitz Tate’s owner, Maurice Fitzpatrick and 14-year-old Connor Clarke who has been using Ronald McDonald House’s facilities as he embarks on a brave battle with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Hutchison said he was chuffed to see that his bets could end up benefitting people like Connor and everyone who uses Ronald McDonald House.

House because I love the work they do here and the people and what it means for them,” Hutchison said. “I’d like to thank Greyhound Racing Victoria for their incredible support of these three amazing charities. It means a lot and I think GRV has such an unbelievably philanthropic spirit and a sense of community that shines through this promotion.”

Hutchison’s connection to greyhound racing goes all the way back to when he was a 12-year-old attending his local club Warragul with his father Ken. “It’s a sport that really unites people and it is so fascinating. It’s nice to be involved in the GRV Chase For Charity to make a more meaningful contribution to such a special house.”

Fitzpatrick wasn’t aware of the good fortune Fitz Tate brought to Ronald McDonald house at the time, but said he was overjoyed to know that his dog could make a difference.

“It’s great and a real honour to know that we’ve helped in some way. We’ve got 12 grandkids and you always hope they don’t need to use a service like Ronald McDonald House but it’s nice to help out regardless.”

Ballarat native Connor, who wore his beloved Crows jumper as they prepare for this week’s Grand Final against Richmond, said he was a big fan of greyhounds both on and off the track.

“It’s really cool. I love the greyhounds, I watch them a bit. I’d love to have one as a pet,” he said. “I’m really happy Ronald McDonald House could benefit from something like this. They’ve given us a home ever since I was diagnosed in July. It’s given us a home for a couple of months and I’m really thankful for that.”

EXPERIENCE ON TWO-TURN TRACKS THE KEY TO WINNING TAB GREAT CHASE: BORG

By Andrew Copley Maryborough’s Joe Borg (pictured with Promises Kept) has some sound advice for fellow trainers ahead of October’s lucrative $230,000 TAB Great Chase series.

Borg, who has trained two Great Chase Grand Final winners, insists that giving greyhounds experience at negotiating two turns, including in trials out of the boxes, will dramatically increase their chances of success in the event.

“I think the key factor to winning the Great Chase is experience at this track (The Meadows),” Borg said following his 2016 Great Chase win with Promises Kept. “A lot of people don’t realise how much it means for a dog to go around and get the experience around two turns.”

The TAB Great Chase is a unique series in that it is for greyhounds with 1-5 wins, with heats run across all of Victoria’s 13 racetracks, mostly one-turn venues.

From there, greyhounds progress through to semi-finals at The Meadows, and this is the point where many dogs come unstuck if they haven’t trialled or raced around two turns before.

“I learned early days with dogs I’ve trained who had a lot of experience on u-shaped tracks. They’d come here (to The Meadows) and they’d need three or four goes before they really showed their true potential,” Borg explained.

The more opportunities you give your greyhound to have a look at The Meadows, the better your chances are of winning this prestigious event.

Conditions of Entry 1. Victorian Bred and Trained greyhounds only. 2. For Greyhounds with 1-5 wins (Maidens Ineligible). 3. Greyhounds must have been domiciled in Victoria for 90 days or more prior to the close of nominations. Greyhounds that have commenced racing under 90 days must only have been domiciled in a Victorian kennel. 4. A greyhound must not be under any order of probation under the rules of Greyhound Racing Victoria at the time of nomination that will not allow it to compete at The Meadows, for the 2017 TAB Great Chase Semi Finals and Grand Final. 5. Each greyhound is only eligible to compete in one series of heats. 6. The heats are open to the best greyhounds nominated plus reserves and will be capped at the number of greyhounds progressing to Semi Finals. 7. The number of greyhounds progressing to the Semi Finals differs at each track. 3 greyhounds will progress from Healesville. 3 greyhounds plus 1 reserve will progress from: Horsham, Sale, Sandown, Traralgon and Warrnambool. 4 greyhounds plus 1 reserve will progress from: Bendigo, Cranbourne, Geelong, Shepparton and The Meadows. 5 greyhounds plus 1 reserve will progress from: Ballarat and Warragul. There will be a ‘ballot’ for the reserve positions. Eligibility to compete in Semi Finals subject to GRV Rule LR33.8. 8. The Winners and the fastest second placegetters from the 6 Semi Finals will progress to the Grand Final. 9. Upon entering this event, trainers will make themselves and their greyhound/s available for any reasonable promotional opportunities relating to this event at Greyhound Racing Victoria’s request. This may include visiting community groups at their facility as well as media and photo opportunities as they arise. 10. VALE MARK CAUCHI The greyhound racing community is saddened by the sudden passing of St. Leonards greyhound trainer, Mark Cauchi on September 9.

Former stayer Mystic Twist’s racetrack achievements were among the highlights in Mark’s training career.

She was his first finalist at group one level, running seventh in the 2014 Bold Trease at Sandown Park.

Mark is sorely missed by many who crossed his path.
