Australia Day award nominations

Nominations close in the New Year for the 2012 Australia Day awards, sponsored by Gresford Community Group. The awards are nominated by any local club or organisation to individuals it believes has made a significant community contribution. Nomination forms have been circulated and are available from the community group’s secretary, Fr Stephen (4938 9313). Closing date for nominations is 6 January next. The awards will be presented at the biennial Australia Day lunch on 26 January.

Australia Day Luncheon 26 January 2012

An invitation to all residents and families of the Gresford district. The Gresford Community Group supports the initiative of our Dungog Shire that Australia Day should be recognised as a significant and important event in the history of our district and accordingly the Community Group will hold our Australia Day smorgasbord luncheon at the Beatty Hotel’s Twin Rivers Café on Thursday 26th January commencing at 12 noon. It is also recognised that there are many residents of the Gresford district who devote large amounts of time and resources to the continued development and progress of our locality and it is thought appropriate that these people be recognised for their commitment to the improvement of our area at a formal presentation during the luncheon. It is our wish that you and your family/friends be present at the luncheon and awards ceremony, to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of the Gresford district on what is a day of celebration of achievement, not only within our area but the wider community of Dungog Shire. Bookings may be made with Fr Stephen Moore (Ph: 4938 9313) or Ken Chandler (Ph 4938 9189) to receive tickets and ensure reservation of seating. Numbers will be limited so bookings close: Friday 20th January at 7.00pm. Why not arrange a Group Table.

Wilfred James Leake’s grave. She kindly brought home some very memorable pictures of where he is buried and of his headstone. She left a poppy on his grave and a message in the visitors’ book from his family in Gresford. Wilfred James Leake’s name is listed on the honour roll at the Gresford School of Arts and at St. Anne’s Church and is one of the many that has a cross next to his name which means he was killed in action. “The bravery of those men and women, who left their homes and families, and sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country, is unforgettable.” “We will remember them.” By Alexandra Cant

John Lawrie Hipwell My name is Cameron Hipwell, and this is my special hero story. MY HERO – JOHN LAWRIE HIPWELL. My hero is my great grandfather, John Lawrie Hipwell. He was born at Vacy on the 11th October 1895, some 116 years ago. He started his schooling years in the Upper Allyn area, then later at Eccleston School. He mainly worked in the area helping on dairy farms. On 24th October 1916, when he was 21 years old, he enlisted in the 20th Battalion AIF at Victoria Barracks Sydney, to serve his country in World War 1. His enlistment number was 6659 and his rank was private. On the 7th February 1917 he sailed for England arriving at Devon Port on the 11th April. On April 17th he went across the channel to France. My great grandfather served as a stretcher bearer in France and Belgium. He was wounded by a machine gun bullet on the 31st August 1918 at Mont St Quentin. He was shot just above the elbow. Sadly his partner in the service was shot dead. While recovering from

his injuries in hospital, he learnt to do beautiful needlework. On the 14th September 1918 he was discharged from hospital. He arrived back in Australia on the SS Kanowna, the date being 25th October 1919. Sadly he passed away as a patient of Allandale Hospital, Cessnock on the 7th February 1979. He was 83 years old when he died. I think my great grandfather was a very special man to serve our country in World War 1, and I am very proud to tell you all about him. WE WILL REMEMBER THEM. Gresford website Dungog shire community education Is there a course you would like coming soon to do or teach in 2012? The Gresford Community Group was successful in receiving funding from the NSW Government Office of Rural Affairs to develop a community website for Gresford. The website will highlight local services and attractions to increase visitation and visitor satisfaction, promote local businesses to the community and visitors and be a central contact point for information on events, organisations and community issues. It is hoped it will lead to business retention and expansion and build community awareness, participation and inclusion for new arrivals. The design of the website is well underway and a ‘live trial’ site will be online from January 2012. The purpose of the ‘live trial’ site is to get feedback and make changes over 2 months before the final site is launched in March 2012. Please take a look in January. Go to www.gresfordnsw.com.au. There will be an online form to leave your comments. We look forward to making this a truly useful community website.

Now there is the opportunity to teach and learn right here in Dungog shire. The Dungog Shire Community Centre has employed Jane Richens & John O’Brien as Education Officers tasked to set up a community college. “We are in the process of scoping the types of courses people would like to see available locally. And of course we are also interested to find people with skills or teaching experience.” Jane Richens said. “We will have a lot to do over the Christmas and New Year period to get all of the structures in place to start a small program in February 2012”. The plan is to develop education opportunities across the shire using existing facilities, halls, and local assets like wilderness areas, rivers and farms. And their idea of education is very broad covering anything from bush walking and computer skill sharing to farm, business and career skills. “Teaching and training may sound very formal to some people but we want to get the word out there that we

will be covering a broad spectrum of courses from the very casual through to recognised accredited courses.” John O’Brien said. “The TAE Training & Assessment course run earlier this year was done in conjunction with WEA Hunter and they are happy to keep working with us to offer fully accredited training.” “At the moment the door is wide open but we need to hear from local people and businesses what they want or need.” There is an online survey to gather teaching and learning suggestions at www.dins.org.au. A printed version of the survey will also be available at Gresford Foodworks and other businesses throughout the Shire. You will need to make your suggestions by Dec 12.

Christmas giving tree

Make sure every child in our neighbourhood has a present this Christmas McElwaine Hunter Valley in conjunction with Dungog Shire Community Centre are taking on the role of Santa’s helpers this year. Both are working towards brightening the Christmas of our struggling local families, who may not, without the communities help, have a Merry Christmas. McElwaine Hunter Valley are requesting those who wish to help, place a new gift of toys or books under their Christmas tree in the office. Every year the Community Centre have Christmas hampers which they distribute to those doing it a bit tough. This season McElwaine Valley are asking you to make sure the children of those families will have a gift to unwrap on Christmas morning. This is a great cause which you can involve the whole family in and we are inviting everyone to help them to make sure those children who otherwise may not receive a gift this year, will do so. ... And they were rrracing!

Please read this article out loud with a raised nasal racing twang! On a perfectly clear evening the punters of Gresford gathered in the P&C Corporate Marquee (Bowling Club) for a day of tipping, betting, eating, drinking and merriment. Eight races were on the card and our bookmakers whose names elude me though they bore more than a passing resemblance to Terence Dillon and Dundence Lawrence began writing the tickets and giving out shonky advice. It was soon clear that the gamblers who bet on the field in every race had more inside knowledge than the rest of us.

The entertainment began with Smithy “Gai” Waterbottle explaining the rules and agenda for about 60 hours. Smithy was about to launch into song, when an unruly spectator who turned out to have an operatic soprano voice and may have been Megan Edwards performed Habanera with a Gresfordised libretto. She was accompanied by Sally Hunt on cornet and keyboards. Mrs Hunt was also the chef for the evening, and provided so much food she will likely be eating marinated mushrooms, pork terrine and other splendours for the next couple of months. You won’t hear her man complaining!

The costume comp was run by M Winchester in a noisy jacket and won by Leon Groves, possibly for his vocal impersonation of Darren Beadman. It could have been otherwise: when the costume competition was called Smithy Waterbottle was clear favourite, but by the time the judging was over he was virtually naked and thus a late scratching. Nearly as nude were the entrants into the finest fetlock competition, the winner by a hamstring being Travis Crouch. Protests were entered but ignored by the handicapper. The major raffle prize went to Joan D of Dungog with second place, the iPad so desired by the young folk of Gresford School, to the dessert chef Sylvia Lawrence, with Lesley Pfitzner taking out the third place. Hardest workers besides the bookies were chief steward Leanne Atkins, bag-lady Sharon Hill and organza wrangler Misha Bevan-Moon.

December 2011

Once the dog race and pig race were run it became clear that Brad Cowie would win the Fine Polyester Cup for highest win on a single race. It only remained to dance the night away with DJ Kev providing an unforgettable array of tunes many of us could remember from our middle age. Big thankees go out to our sponsors Heritage Retreat, Camyr Allyn Wines, Gresford Foodworks, Gresford Gallery, Gresford Gourmet Meats, Bunna Bunoo, Heather Williams whose flower displays outrivalled Floriade, Ange Kellehear, the trucking Lawrences, the Lockes, John O’Brien, Ailsa, Kristy, Jamie, and the Cant girls for babysitting, anyone mentioned above and the punters who sprinted to the bookies in the vain hope of winning a motza. Luck may be a lady, but she doesn’t smile on everyone. She did however smile on the Gresford P&C who made over $6,000. Clarence The Clocker

Dungog – Gresford Hoof & Hook Group After staying in Yass again overnight we headed off next morning to Canberra to the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicine Authority – this is the government body that sets all Withholding Periods and Export Slaughter Intervals which we are responsible for when sighing NVD forms at slaughter time. This session proved to be very informative and well run in explaining to the group why and how restrictions exist and it certainly came across to us how careful you need to be with withholding periods after using chemicals. The afternoon was spent in Canberra “on free time”. After departing Gresford in the early hours of the morning and then picking up the Williams River mob in Clarence Town we set off for our first stop at Camden EMAI meeting with Dr Peter Kirkland and Veterinary Research staff . We were fortunate to have Ian Blackwood, retired beef officer, on board and organized a meeting with the vet people to talk on pest diseases – such as Akabane, Pestivirus and Vibriosis in the Hunter Valley. The vets freely answered many questions thrown at them.

Wednesday morning was spent with Greg Meaker, the local Beef Cattle officer and previously a beef lecturer at Tocal. Greg has been using Bio – solids (human waste) as a fertiliser direct from Sydney Water on his Gunning property over the last 18 months and it was very enlightening to see the positive effect the fertiliser was having on the paddocks he had done. He was also very honest and upfront regarding the challenges he has faced in using this product and as he said there will always be negatives and positives when trialling anything new.

our last day was spent visiting Belgenny farm - the original property of Elizabeth and John Macarthur where he cast his eye over the “Cowpastures cattle” and set the beginnings of the Australian beef industry. We were freely allowed to wander the historic property and were all over whelmed by the restoration of the old houses and out buildings. The cemetery which is the resting place of the Macarthur family is only a short distance walk was also an interesting site. Sheep found on the property today still carry the original genetics of the base flock brought out from England. The property is now in the ownership of the NSW State Government operated by Dept of Primary Industries and will preserve the values of early farming in Australia. The homestead is privately owned by the Stannum family who are direct descendents of Macarthur. Our tour concluded on Friday afternoon with everyone having had an enjoyable week and returning home to even more feed in the paddocks than when we left. The group is now looking forward to hold-ing our next hoof & hook competition on the weekend of 21st – 22nd April 2012. With such a good season keep your eyes open as you wander around the paddocks in the next few months and send in some cattle.

Changes in Security at Tocal “Tocal Campus now has a Residential Supervisor living in accommodation within the student area and has also had a number of CCTV security cameras installed. Both of these initiatives have been sought for many years”, Dr Cameron Archer, Principal, Tocal College said. “While we have very few security issues it is important to remain ahead of the game on all fronts”. Funds from the Australian Government’s Education Investment Fund enabled the construction of a dedicated extension within the student area. Subsequently, Mr and Mrs Peter Marshall of the Central Coast were appointed as Residential Supervisors and took up duty in October.

The College will continue to employ Duty Officers to supplement the Residential Supervisor’s services The Tocal pool has had closed circuit TV installed for some time but now that has been supplemented by further CCTV around the Campus including the front entrance. These high quality CCTV cameras are monitored regularly. “Given the above additions to the security, our best security still remains with our observant students, staff and members of the community.” “We value the support of the community and all involved in Tocal to ensure it is a safe and pleasant place to be”, Dr Archer said.

The first draft of the Tocal Master Plan has been launched for public comment. The Plan aims to provide long term guidance as to how the Tocal property may develop into the A Gathering Light future. The draft is a culmination of over 18 months work in Jennifer Donnelly developing strategies, policies and consultation.
