It's mine – No, It's mine! East Gresford was honoured by a visit to the Bowlo by The People’s Cup, more commonly known as the Melbourne Cup, on its 2026 world promotional tour. The 2026 cup is worth $1,020,500 (AUD) and weighs 3.85kg. The Bowlo hosted a Gala Dinner and raised $2,500 towards the Club Mental Health program. Story and pics pp12/13. What’s On the Shelves? by Glenda Smith
The Other Bennet Sister Janice Hadlow Mary Bennet is the overshadowed sister in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, but in this novel she comes into the spotlight. It is an interesting narrative device, and has been turned into a very successful television series, but the book itself is nothing extraordinary. Austen fans may enjoy the reworking of the original novel’s events, and the revisiting of beloved characters, but the ultimate appeal is in the satisfying trajectory of an overlooked person learning to love herself and be loved by others. Charlotte Lucas, another background character, is also given much more prominence as someone who is prepared to make time for Mary. Hadlow elaborates on locations such as Longbourn; London, and the Lake District, which gives another added dimension to our experiences of reading Pride and Prejudice. The ‘marriage market’ aspect of the novel is well-handled, and Mary’s development into wisdom and self-acceptance, with the help of other characters, is effective and believable. Hadlow does not attempt to replicate the wit and sparkle of Austen but the tone is warm and the narrative progress is sustaining, in a quiet way. There is some romantic tension, but the ending is never really in doubt. All books reviewed are in the CWA library–see separate shelf so they are easy to find. Find reviews in a folder. Markets are returning to Gresford! The much-loved Gresford Community Market is making a very welcome return on October 10 and visitors can expect a fantastic mix of handmade and locallyproduced goods. Back at its usual venue at 12 Park Street, East Gresford (sandwiched between Gresford Community Gallery and Gresford Sporting Complex), stalls will feature local crafts, art, homewares, jewellery, personal care products and fresh local produce and there will also be live music. Set against the beautiful rural backdrop of Gresford, the markets are all about celebrating the creativity, talent and produce of the local community. Whether you’re hunting for something unique, stocking up on local goodies, looking for a special gift, getting a headstart on your Christmas shopping or simply keen to spend a morning enjoying good food, music and community spirit, the Gresford Markets are the place to be. Moving forward, the markets are taking a fresh approach. Rather than monthly markets, there will be a series of special event markets throughout the year. The October 10 comeback market will be followed by a Christmas market on Saturday, October 12. And in 2027 the schedule will see a Midsummer Makers market (February 13), Heart & Home market (May 8), Cozy Up & Support Local market (July 10), Spring Family Picnic market (September 18) and Christmas market (December 11). With a plan to continue to grow the market, organisers are keen to hear from local performers, entertainers and interested market stallholders who would like to be involved in future markets. • September 2026, p 8 Gresford Public School Celebrates Strong Wellbeing and Academic Results As we move into the second semester of 2026, I am pleased to share some outstanding news and reflections on behalf of our school community here at Gresford Public School.
strategies to great effect, explaining the purpose of learning activities, demonstrating new skills, and connecting new knowledge to what students already understand.
Our recent attendance figures are a testament to the wonderful culture we have developed. With a current attendance rate of 91.3%, we continue to exceed the NSW state average of 87.9%. Even more encouraging is that 77.4% of our students maintain an individual attendance rate over 90%, significantly higher than the state average of 59.9%. These numbers truly reflect our students’ enthusiasm for learning and their commitment to being present every day.
It is these strong foundations of wellbeing and quality instruction that support our students’ academic progress. Preliminary 2026 NAPLAN results show our Year 3 and Year 5 students performing above statistically similar school groups in reading, numeracy, and writing. While more detailed data is yet to come, these early indicators are very encouraging. At Gresford Public School, we are proud to foster an environment where students want to come to school, feel happy and supported, and achieve great progress in their learning. Congratulations to our students and staff for these achievements. We look forward to continuing this important work together.

In addition to attendance, our Year 3 to 6 students recently participated in the NSW Public Schools Survey. Their anonymous responses painted a very positive picture of life at Gresford. The survey results highlighted an exceptional absence of bullying, far better than state averages, as well as a strong sense of pride, happiness, and belonging among our students.
Our teachers’ dedication has also been clearly recognised by students. Feedback indicated that classrooms are well managed and provide an environment that is calm and focused for learning. Students reported that teachers consistently set clear rules and expectations and use explicit teaching

• September 2026, p 9 Local Star Shines at Maitland Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival Gresford Public School is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Year 3 student Hallie Cullen, who has qualified for the prestigious Hunter Region Athletics Carnival in the junior 200m dash. Hallie's journey to this regional event began with her impressive performance at our inter school carnival where she comfortably qualified for the Maitland Zone PSSA Athletics Carnival on July 23. She then improved on her performance as she shattered the longstanding Maitland PSSA record for the junior girls 200m, clocking a remarkable 28.55 seconds. This achievement not only set a new benchmark but also highlighted Hallie's exceptional talent and dedication to athletics. A passionate member of the Maitland Athletics Club, Hallie thrives in middledistance events and continues to push her limits with enthusiasm. Reflecting on her success, Hallie shared, "I'm really excited about having a chance to race against other fast students and trying to break the record at Hunter." She added, "Going to the state carnival would be a dream come true, and my parents would be really proud of that." Athletic prowess runs in the family, as Hallie's father, Max Cullen, was a strong

The opportunity to visit this wonderful property, combined with the chance to pick up a bargain at our Annual Plant Sale, attracted a record attendance of 54 members and 11 visitors. Everyone enjoyed exploring the gardens, while the Plant Sale produced a very pleasing result, with all proceeds going towards the many charitable causes supported by the group. Jillian welcomed everyone and thanked Janet and Phillip for their hospitality. Lisa then provided an update on the ‘Hospital Tree’ in Dungog, which will undergo further detailed health assessments. PAGG members Penny, Lisa and Jenny have also had a positive meeting with the Council horticulturist regarding permission to plant a number of trees around Dungog. The group will now seek a grant to help fund the project. Jenny then shared the exciting news that Penny had nominated the Gresford Arboretum for a special award from the National Institute of Horticulture. Thanks to everyone involved in its

Jillian then invited Janet to share the fascinating history of Camyr Allyn. The property dates back to 1828, when Charles Boydell received a large land grant in the district. His brother William later joined him, and their properties, including Caergwrle, eventually extended for miles in every direction. The original holdings were progressively reduced through government reclamation and subdivision. In 1972, Phillip’s father
Following his death, his three sons drew lots to divide the property, with Phillip drawing the house and surrounding paddocks, which are still used for cattle grazing. The house was originally built in 1904. In 1977, following extensive rewiring, the house was tragically destroyed by fire caused by an electrical fault. After prolonged insurance negotiations, it was rebuilt in 1984 and later reclad with 8,000 bricks sourced from buildings in Newcastle, helping restore its original grandeur. The magnificent views are complemented by beautiful gardens designed and developed by Janet, including a special area created around the front steps for her daughter’s wedding. A live-in gardener helps maintain the gardens and guest accommodation. Jillian presented Janet with a gift in appreciation of her hospitality before members wandered through the gardens and headed home. Next meeting: 15 September. Details: www.pagardengroup.org

Paul Dooley did an excellent job as MC and Richie Gudgeon entertained with excellent musicianship and familiar tunes. Thank you to them and all who helped make the evening memorable and successful. Featured Gallery Artist – Janelle Gibbon Heath. Over the years, Janelle
Gibbon Heath has dabbled in art, mainly creating pieces for her own walls. Her artistic journey changed during COVID when the event management business she had run for more than 20 years went into hibernation. With time on her hands, Janelle turned to YouTube and began teaching herself to paint. A gift of art classes from her sister in October 2020 led her to TinKat Alley Studio at Fassifern. What began as a way to fill her time soon became a passion, introducing Janelle to friends who shared her love of art. Art by Nell Studio was born, and Janelle has continued developing her skills through dedication and practice. Her work has received Commended Awards and a People’s Choice Award from the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Art Society. She is now a member. Janelle recently began teaching beginners’ acrylic techniques at TinKat Alley Art Studio,

Radio Dungog and Dungog Regional Tourism have collaborated, using funds from the Community Broadcasting Foundation, to produce a series of podcasts about the Dungog region. It is hoped that this series is the first of a number to inform locals and visitors about the region and its interesting history. The first series has largely been completed and will be launched at a function at Radio House Dungog in September. In order to ensure that all of the Shire is covered, the first series has a podcast on each of the villages: Clarence Town, Gresford, Vacy and Paterson, as well as the Town of Dungog. They give an excellent introduction to the history of the area, including acknowledgement of the Indigenous nations who were the first custodians of the land.

The project has come at a time when Radio Dungog has moved from its very modest facilities in Brown Street to the new Radio House facilities in what was once the Girl Guides Hall on Dungog Showground. It also coincides with the completion by Dungog Regional Tourism of a comprehensive series of brochures, site information boards and maps of the area, covering each of the villages.

Gresford Landcare meeting Gresford Landcare met for its August meeting at the property of James and Jane Slack at Allynbrook on a beautiful, warm, sunny Saturday morning. Our meeting was a combined meeting with the Allyn River Landholders Group, including a presentation from Russell Brown, a local agronomist, property owner and composting guru. Following morning coffee we moved to a part of the property to which composted material had been applied some time ago and we were able to review the impact and usefulness of the compost that has also been applied to various river flats in the district. Russell spoke on soil biology and options for nitrogen and silica application to soils. He then participated in a discussion about composting in general and the application of chicken litter.
