Crepe Myrtle Crew ! Ten years ago, the Gresford District Community Group commenced a street planting program that would in time help improve the appearance of Gresford and East Gresford. We chose Crepe Myrtles (Largerstroemia indica ‘Sioux’) because of their size, drought resistance, love of clay soils and their summer beauty. During the last few weeks, 12 enthusiastic members of our community helped plant stage two… another 60 trees. We were extremely grateful for the load of mulch that the Dungog Shire Council provided for us. We would like to thank those of you who were happy to have trees planted on your nature strip. Unfortunately, we were unable to plant on a few verges because of low overhead power lines, the lack of space
between gutter and footpath and in some cases, the growth of existing mature trees. We have continued with the hot pink flower theme as the one color in streetscape has by far the most pleasing impact to the eye. We ask you NOT to prune these trees as it will both weaken the tree and in time deform their majestic look. They are disease resistant and the only help they need is a bucket or two of water around the dripline once a week in summer, especially when young. As the Crepe Myrtles mature, we hope you will enjoy the positive impact they will have lining our streets. Janie Chandler

‘Fosterton Sculpture on the Farm’ proves a hit The highly successful 2019 Sculpture on the Farm exhibition brought more than 2000 visitors through the gates of ‘Fosterton’ near Dungog. At the annual meeting on Monday 27 July, held via Zoom, Chair Philippa Graham revealed that the event attracted 120 sculptures, both indoors and in the paddocks and gardens at the Fosterton property.

'Boot Hill' and Mount Allyn on NBN
Tourism in the region is picking up again after the 'summer of fire' and the corona virus lockdown. The Upper Allyn and Barring Tops has recently been featured by Laura Kempe on NBN News. There were two stories – a feature on 'Boot Hill' and the Hipwell family and a family waiting for snow at Mt Allyn with comment by Cameron Archer on the recent growth of local tourism after such an awful last summer. The first story covered a local phenomenon, and tourist photo-opp, at the Hipwell family farm commonly known as "Boot Hill" (between Eccleston and Upper Allyn). Their front fence has
become covered with shoes and boots contrbuted by passers-by over many years. It all started with a single pair of shoes, innocently strung up on a fence in the Hunter. 15 years on, there are more than a thousand pairs – of all shapes, brands and sizes. It’s a peculiar tourist attraction, but as the saying goes, “if the shoe fits, wear it.” The story featured Alan Parkes, Angus Hipwell and the Mayor of Dungog Shire, John Connors along with Jennifer Hipwell, Jake Hipwell, Cameron Hipwell, Bronwyn Onslow, Vanessa Lucas and Keira Hipwell. The other story featured a recent snow event on Mount Allyn – "Snow chasers

And while the falls weren’t as heavy as in other parts of the state, it gave them one last opportunity to make the most of winter." Long-term permits help the future of travelling stock reserves For the first time in several years, livestock producers have the opportunity to apply for long-term access to Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs) across the Hunter and MidCoast. Producers are invited to submit a tender for a five year Management Agreement Permit. “These permits are a win-win for producers and the long-term health and viability of our state’s TSR network,” said Hunter Local Land Services General Manager Brett Miners. “Livestock producers get certainty of TSR access, helping them plan and manage their business while also taking on the responsibility of being a custodian of public land,” said Mr Miners. Management Agreement Permits only applies to a proportion of carefully assessed TSRs in the region. All TSRs remain available by application to Local Land Services for short-term access permits such as walking stock. Under new measures introduced by Local Land Services, Management Agreement Permits across NSW are now standardised, and the process of assessing the tenders is more robust.
Successful tenderers will be selected by Local Land Services, based on a selection criteria that will ensure appropriate ongoing land management and maintenance of the TSR. These criteria include the producer’s proposed grazing practices and experience as well as how he or she
plans to manage pests, weeds and drought impacts. “The people of NSW can have greater certainty than ever before that our TSR network is being managed sustainably, helping ensure it remains viable for the future,” said Mr Miners.

New projects at Gresford Recreation Reserve
The Gresford recreation reserve and Showground Management have been actively pursuing a range of exciting grant options that would improve facilities at the reserve. Applications have already been lodged for the following three projects: 1.Purchase of a zero-turn mower. This will control the grass in the arena without the damage to the surface that happens with a tractor. This will also provide the ability to use a mulching blade to desiccate the mown grass so that it will provide a nutrient source across the arena. This will enable us to provide a first class arena surface for local event organisers and competitors. 2. The park managers have lodged a second grant application to purchase and construct a new amenities block to support the new competitor/camping area at the southern side of the access road. The new amenities will include 4 female toilets and 3 shower stalls plus 2 male cubicles, 2 urinals and 3 male showers as well as a disabled toilet and shower along with a baby changing station. 3. The park managers were recently advised of a grant opportunity
specifically targeting exercise pathways or cycleways on crown reserves and as this was a previously nominated improvement from our management plan we have submitted a third grant application for this project.

The course of the walkway will provide at least one kilometre of solid compressed gravel walkway two metres wide. The path will be 'off the road' and wide enough for two prams to be pushed along side by side. The grant application also includes a proposal to install four outdoor exercise stations. These stations could be installed at individual locations around the reserve or they could be installed in a cluster along the walkway. There are advantages to both options but most importantly we have to get the funding first. In the meantime, we are interested in getting your feedback. We have included a map of the grounds with path and exercise station options. We would like to invite you to consider the options and share your thoughts by marking the path you think would be best for the walkway and exercise stations. When you are done, just pop them in the mail chutes at the East Gresford Post Office

National Desexing Month
Every year in July the National Desexing Network organises National Desexing Month. In 2020, National Desexing Month has been moved to September, due to covid. During National Desexing Month, veterinary clinics across Australia are invited to participate by halving or at least lowering their desexing fee. It is hoped that through providing cheap desexing to pet owners it will encourage pet owners to desex their pets before the summer breeding season starts. You can help reduce the number of abandoned and homeless litters of kittens and puppies in your community. Mount Breckin community building a frontline on weeds and pests accessibility and are priority weeds for control in our region. More than 80ha of weed control has been undertaken so far across nine properties.
A three year project focusing on the iconic Mt Breckin landform just north of Vacy is progressing well, tackling identified pest plant and animal species in the area. Fifteen landholders have joined the project since it started in late 2018 working in partnership with Hunter Local Land Services to recognise and protect the significant biodiversity values of the mountain. The Mt Breckin Project aims to assist local landholders with weed and pest animal control, small scale erosion issues and revegetation. The project is also gathering important biodiversity data via motion detection cameras on what other types of wildlife, like koalas occupy this significant remnant vegetation site. The project is being supported by a NSW Environmental Trust grant together with contributions from Hunter Local Land Services. Dungog Shire Council is also a contributing partner, completing some adjoining roadside weed control surrounding Mt Breckin.
“The main focus on these two dominant weed species at Mt Breckin is to assist in regaining the integrity of the remnant bushland present on the mountain,” Lorna Adlem, Hunter LLS Land Services Officer said. “African Olive infestations are very concentrated on the eastern side of the mountain with Lantana being present in varying degrees throughout the area.” Local contractors have been engaged by Hunter LLS to assist with weed control. “We have two contractors undertaking weed treatment work to help break the back of these infestations. As well as the dominant weeds, pest animals such as wild dogs, foxes and rabbits are also being targeted. Footage of these animals, as well as native fauna, has been captured via remote detection cameras which have been in place on various properties over the last 10 months. Five wild dogs have been trapped and destroyed so far and if monitored dog activity increases a second round of trapping may occur and/or some strategic baiting in order to help protect native species like koalas. A rabbit control program using the calicivirus is looking to be rolled out in late spring/summer. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan This novel is like a modern love-child of Charles Dickens and Jane Austen – on steroids. Kevin Kwan grew up in the Singapore of the setting, and has stated that the excesses and opulence depicted are not exaggerated. The ‘Crazy’ of the title is his version of the English phrase ‘filthy rich’ – so wealthy as to be rich beyond belief. The centre of the plot is the love story between Rachel Chu and Nick Young, who is the scion of one of the richest families of Singapore. Nick and Rachel are both university professors in America, and when he invites her to attend the wedding of his best friend in Singapore, for whom he is best man, neither of them has any concept of the tsunami of malicious gossip and hostility that will greet her. Some of it is snobbery, and some jealousy. Nick is considered a prize catch on the marriage market. Nick is not snobbish or self-important, but most of the people in his circle are. Everyone seems to be ranked according to how much money, property, designer clothing and jewellery they have – including the men. Those with private jets are the most envied. Rachel’s modest background damns her in the eyes of most of his acquaintance – much as Elizabeth Bennet’s did in Pride and Prejudice, while some of the comic grotesques among the rich characters are quite Dickensian. Kwan revels in writing about the food, clothing, and furniture of the rich set as well as the sense of entitlement and hypocrisy many of them display. One of the least appealing characters says she will have to stop her charity work because her change of fortunes means that she will no longer be able to afford the designer clothes she used to wear to her charity events. This is a diverting read. All books reviewed are from the CWA library on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder. There has been a recent donation of mysteries and thrillers to the library in addition to the Lee Child donation, and some of the donated romance novels are now available in the street library.

Lioness club to end A decision was made at the International Lions Convention last year to disband all Lioness Clubs throughout the world by June 2021.There has been no reason given or no consultation with Lioness Clubs. This decision has saddened and distressed us all. Dungog Lioness Club was chartered 38 years ago with Lioness Jane (Kennedy) Levick as Charter President and Lionesses Joyce Byron and Lorraine Gleeson as charter members. These three remain members to this day. The Lioness Club has enjoyed serving our community and receiving community support for our many and varied projects. Through our service we have been involved in lots of local activities and met many hard working and dedicated people. Lioness Joyce Byron was installed as the President of the Dungog Lioness Club for the year 2020/21 with the change over taking place at the home of Pixie Jerome with all Lioness members in attendance. Sadly Joyce will be the last president of the Dungog Lioness Club.

The challenges farming families face when dealing with the impacts of bushfire, pests, drought and flood have an enormous effect on our rural communities. In these times it is our children who can feel like they are uninformed and unheard. The ‘Farm Force’ program provides our kids from the Hunter region a chance to have a voice. The funds have been assigned to programs and projects including e-Planning, IT system and audio-visual upgrades, Rural Lands and Employment Lands Studies, the State of the Environment Report and a number of reserve funds. A portion of the funding has also been set aside for smaller Ward projects, in which funds will be allocated at the council’s discretion, in line with priorities set under the Community Strategic Plan 2030.
COVID-19 Sporting Update NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant PSM, has this week announced updated public health recommendations with the anticipation they will need to be in place for the next six (6) weeks, in response to increased cases of COVID-19 in NSW. The updated measures aim to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmission and support community sporting activities to continue to operate safely. The updated public health recommendations include:

• Cease activities that result in the mixing of participants and staff from different regions, for example by ceasing zone, regional or state championships or competitions; • Cease any activities that result in overnight stays (e.g. multi-day training camps) due to increased risk of COVID-19 transmission in residentialtype settings with shared facilities; • Cease face-to-face social activities relating to community sports (e.g. award ceremonies, end-of-season social gatherings, post-training group dinners); • Avoid carpools or bus travel with people from different household groups where possible; and • For local activities, limit spectators to one parent only, where the child requires parental supervision during the sporting activity. These recommendations have come into effect from Wednesday 19 August. Council’s Community Project Officer, Tracey Lowrey, is working with our local sporting organisations to implement these updates.
