River improvement funding – Paterson River This program seeks to support landholders implement projects to protect and enhance priority rivers in the Hunter catchment.

Hunter Local Land Services can provide extension advice, information and networking opportunities for interested individuals and groups of landholders.

Gresford Arboretum Update – Spring Well still no significant rain but spring is definitely making a move. The arboretum has needed a bit of extra watering get through the dry winter but looks surprisingly good.

At last there is enough growth make us feel it will one day be what we planned – a beautiful shady place to sit, and to bring the schoolchildren for their ecological studies.

The unique local rainforest species showcased in the arboretum will not only encourage their use in gardens and properties, but will provide a food source for birds and animals local to the area.

As well we hope to make this wonderful community property more user friendly to be enjoyed and shared by locals and visitors alike.

You can imagine our delight to find a frill necked lizard has moved in and 3 baby noisey miners have hatched in the bleeding heart tree. Now we need some rocks and hollow logs for habitat. This is just the beginning. Only made possible by all the enthusiasm and hard work of our many arboretum helpers.

Soon the native frangipani will be flowering. The red cedars have their new

red leaves and the grevilleas are full of bees. The purple and white flowers of Hardenbergia are a delight and it makes a useful and attractive ground cover supressing weeds.

When the wonderful Lacebark trees at the entrance (donated by Libby and Dougal Alison) flower we will have a celebration!

Recently we have had visits from a teachers group and members of the Institute of Horticulture. Gresford school children are planning a visit to plant and gather information for their projects.

Historical Society's 30th Come along and enjoy – the Gresford District Historical Society will be celebrating 30 years of existence on Sun 20 Oct, 10–4.

A picnic day will occur in the grounds of the GDHSI museum with the addition of fun old-style games. 'Pumpkin bowling' utilising Ken and Karen Turnbull‘s famous dry pumpkins should be quite competitive.

Slow movement tractor pulling will take place plus it will be a local market day. Any car boot sales are encouraged to come along.

Entertaining music will be provided by 'Williams River Rounders' band. Present on the day will be Jackie Baines from Dungog to do antique appraisals. Antique items and old wares. Jackie will assess and value for a gold coin donation. Dressing up in clothing and accessories from yesteryear is also encouraged on our celebration day. This could end up being quite rewarding for you.

Historical society members have always appreciated the support given to it's special event days. It is realised that it is important to gather, preserve and share the heritage of our local area. Obtaining artefacts, old documents, stories and old photos that relate directly to this is paramount. As time goes on there is that need by many to better understand the origins of local heritage.

Thank you John Lill from the Paterson Allyn valley "One of the world’s greatest classical pianists. An intellectual giant and master craftsman. Beyond words."

John Lill lives in London with his Australian wife Jackie. Over the past 20 years, they have visited friends in Gresford many times and developed a great love for the Paterson Allyn valley.

John and Jackie were married in St Mary on Allyn Church and so have cemented a permanent connection with this part of the world.

It was John’s wish that the proceeds from his classical piano recital be given to the restoration fund of St Mary on Allyn Church and the primary school children in our valley to help them develop an appreciation for classical music.

We were delighted to be able to present to the Gresford, Vacy and Paterson Primary Schools a cheque for $3000 each, with the only condition that the donation be used for the sole purpose of music development within the schools. We have also donated $4000 to help with restoration work at St Mary on Allyn Church and $550 to St Anne’s Church to help with painting.

Our Gardens | a series on locals & gardening

nursery. Photos of 1966 shows the Silky Oak by the diary & how little vegetation there is around the diary, while at the same time Sid established a botanic garden from the seeds he collected for his nursery.

Phyllis died in 1998 & Sid in 2000 – they are both buried at the “grave knoll”.

In December 1821 William Dun received a grant of 1300 acres.

In January 1822 he travelled to the Paterson area with James Webber and they selected the land associated with their grants. Dun selected “Duninald” & Webber selected “Tocal”.

During 1822, William ordered 3,000 bricks from Newcastle for the construction of what is now called “Old Duninald”. The planting at this time of the Norfolk Island Hibiscus, by the house, is credited to William’s wife, Maria. William and Maria had 11 children – all but 3 living until old age.

The youngest, Margaret Adria died on 30 December, 1830 and is buried on the “grave knoll” in the “the wood”.

William and Maria dealt with fire in 1825 (they lost their farm buildings, farm implements, a year’s supply of wheat and valuable maize crop), flood and drought. Their financial fortunes were challenged and in 1843 William was basically insolvent.

His friend James Webber described William as a most industrious and

‘Old Duninald’

Old Duninald was left to its own devices – some plants lived & others died & by the time the current owners, Chris and Julia Wokes arrived enterprising settler. His family recall how so had a lot of weeds also arrived. They he made “Old” Duninald a beautiful cleared out the weeds & the bones of the place with avenues of oaks and terraces of roses; sadly none are surviving. There botanic garden could be seen, with many beautiful surprises as unknown is a story that his financial problems species flowered. were a function of his preoccupation with roses and garden beautification, rather than farm management.

William and Maria’s daughter married Charles Reynolds of Tocal in 1844.

There is not much mention of the garden or house at “Old Duninald” until nearly 100 years later when Sidney & Phyllis Reynolds took up residence 1935, running a dairy farm on the land. This ceased in 1966 & Sid established a native tree

tool & habitat for wild life. The arboretum will be created around the existing trees and where there has been an explosion of growth of certain species like Casurina’s & Norfolk Island Hibiscus, these will be thinned as the new plantings take hold.

Chris and Julia take a great deal of pleasure in the natural history of ‘Old Duninald’, reputedly the oldest house in the Hunter Valley, and look forward to the continuing establishment of the Arboretum.

A chance meeting with a young man who wanted a hollow log to protect native wildlife from feral cats has led to a new life for the grounds of Old Duninald. Alex from Biological Preservation Australia came to Duninald for a log and "now we will have an arboretum" said Julia.

Alex identified the trees existing in the wood – these have been named…these trees have all been planted mainly by Sid, it is unlikely that any of the trees predate European history. Julia and Chris plan to create an arboretum featuring Lower Hunter rainforest environments, providing a reference

The day kicked off bright and early with the combined novice and maiden draft commencing at 6:30am sharp. The day went as smooth as the winning runs.

Congratulations Murray Grady winning the Kirkwood Produce Novice Campdraft on Donemore Miles with a 177.

Congratulations also to the campdraft coordinator Warwick Lawrence winning the Tom Cav Constructions Maiden Campdraft riding Hunter View Royal Chic scoring a 91.

With the Eastern Zone points up for grabs the competing level took to new highs this year with some outstanding numbers for our Friday night junior rodeo, that started at 5pm and ran well into the evening under lights.

Two young locals from Gresford took out their completion with Bridie Booth taking out the under 8 barrel race with a time of 23.320 and Cooper Chesworth smashing the competition in the under 8 steer ride with a score of 71. The novice saddle bronc, novice bareback and the novice bull ride saw some stiff competition with only few placing in each round. Angus Mactavish scoring a 69 in the novice saddle bronc, Harry Corkhill the only placing in the novice

bareback coming out with a 59 and Oliver Towell taking the win for the novice bull ride with a score of 69.

Congratulations Hayley Edwards on winning the Paterson River Pony Club Junior Campdraft with a score of 89 on Lady. Winning the Dillon & Sons Junior Cutout was Dakota Robertson on Jay Jay.

Saturday morning saw the juvenile and junior draft set the pace for the rest of the day’s competitors. Congratulations Alec Grainger on winning the Davey & Olsen Juvenile Campdraft after a run off The open draft saw the competition score of 104 on Gemma. Also congrats to ramp up with some amazing rides.

A Laid-Back Evening With The Stars As the 90 or so people were travelling along several km of dirt road to a private observatory at Trevallyn for the Paterson Allyn Williams Science Hub’s Stargazing night on 21 September, they must have watched the changing cloud cover with apprehension. But they need not have been concerned because it turned out to be a memorable evening.

People began arriving about 4pm and there was a variety of activities for the remaining daylight hours. Those who were ready to relax could sit looking over the rolling hills, green from recent rain, and watch the changing colours as the sun set. Others could view the fascinating and beautifully presented memorabilia that had been collected over many years by the host and observatory owner, Darren Jones. The subjects included a wide range of sporting activities, meteorites and rocks from memorable sites around the world, fragments of timber from historic buildings and from the Royal Coach Britannia, built by an Australian coach builder to commemorate the Queen's 80th birthday.

And for those who wanted to begin their stargazing in daylight one of the four light telescopes, brought for the occasion by the Newcastle Astronomical Society, could be

identified as Jupiter. From then on people took turns at the four Newcastle telescopes and the observatory’s light telescope for views of Jupiter and Saturn.

All the astronomers patiently made sure that everyone got a good view and those people watching the radio telescope signal saw the seemingly erratic spikes in the signal from Jupiter, some of which would have been caused by the passing of one or more of Jupiter's many moons.

The clouds came and went throughout the evening. Sometimes there was little more to see than the two planets but at other times the constellation Scorpio was clear and fleetingly the Southern Cross.

Once everyone had had a turn or three at the various telescopes and it became clear that the cloud cover would not improve, people gradually drifted home after a very relaxing yet informative evening thanks to the generosity of Darren and his friends from the Newcastle Astronomical Society.

Book Club fun event fundraising is noble, it also needs to be fun. Book groups traditionally operate in isolation. Individuals may want to join a book group but don’t know of any. Hence the first fundraiser is a morning tea to which members of all book clubs throughout the Shire are invited, as well as all those who just love reading and would hate to see others not experience the lifelong joys that it brings.

When a group of passionate readers, members of a local book club for over 10 years, heard about the number of children and adults in the Dungog Shire who are disadvantaged through either poor or non-existent reading skills, they decided they wanted to help. They started by founding the Friends of the Dungog Community Centre Inc with the initial goal of raising funds to support the expansion of early literacy programs throughout the Dungog Shire.

The

Gresford School of Arts The Gresford School of Arts was originally located in Church Street Gresford, now occupied by the St Anne’s Parish Hall. The timber frame building was relocated to Park Street East Gresford and officially opened in December 1928. A brick School of Arts building was later constructed adjacent to the other building and officially opened on 20th March 1930.

The facility consists of the auditorium and foyer, (where the Honour Board is located and maintained by the Gresford RSL sub branch), cenotaph, kitchen, supper room (preschool), meeting room (RSL sub branch allocated rent free in perpetuity), external storage garage (metal) and the external public toilets.

The title of the School of Arts transferred to Dungog Shire Council 22nd October 1970. The day to day management of the facility has been conducted by local residents constituted as a Section 355 Committee. These residents have volunteered their time and expertise to successfully ensure that the Gresford School of Arts facility remains viable, relevant and in our public hands for the benefit of Gresford.

We have all seen the unfortunate results (eg increased hall hire fees, closure or sales of facilities) in other Local Council areas where the local Council was forced or chose to take direct control of their School of Arts facilities and local halls due to a lack of awareness by their residents about the benefit of local management committees.

But now we need your help! It is essential that we have more people to assist by joining the Committee. Come along to the Gresford School of Arts Annual General Meeting to be held at the School of Arts hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 15th October 2019. The title of this novel reflects the philosophy of the narrator’s husband – that life will be orderly and productive if you follow the rules of science. Unfortunately for Robert Pettergree, life and humanity are much more unpredictable, as his wife Jean Finnegan understands. Robert is a crusader with a special gift – he can identify a region by the taste of its soil. He also has faith in the power of superphosphate and knowledge of agriculture to transform the Mallee region into high-yielding wheat country, but drought and poor soil are formidable barriers to success.

Robert and Jean meet on the Better Farming Train, which visits outback Victoria to bring enlightenment in the areas of agriculture and domestic skills. Ironically, on the outbreak of war, the same train arrives to take men away to become soldiers. As farming is a protected industry the nursing sister in charge of medical examinations gives the men the titles of different occupations to make them eligible for enlistment.

This is a story of fortitude and resilience, as well as disillusionment, and gives an overview of the mid-20th century in a particular area of Australia. The well-informed text is enhanced by photos relevant to the content, and is an intelligent and engaging treatment of its subject matter.

Mammothon Challenge

Women across the Hunter New England area are invited to join the Mammothon Challenge which aims to screen 13,205 women between August and October 2019. So far over 7,000 women have been screened. Breast screening can pick up breast cancer before it can be seen or felt

Greater Hunter Water Plan.

A Strategic business case reviews all the feasible options on how such a system could be delivered. This Strategic Business Case is required to be issued to Infrastructure NSW (INSW) and is referred to as Gateway 1 submittal/review.

After this first review and assessment, the next step in the process would be to develop a Detailed Business Case on the preferred investment opportunity highlighted in the strategic business case, which can take a further 12 to 18 months.

We spoke to the team about the importance of community engagement during this process, and they committed to come back and brief the Council again prior to the submission of the Strategic Business Case to INSW.

Longer term, Council plans to make copies of notification and exhibition documents and development consents available through the DA Tracker. Monkerai Bridge Road Upgrade Transport for NSW is upgrading the Monkerai rail bridge, using contractors, John Holland. Due to residents’ concerns over the timing of the resultant road closures John Holland has slightly decreased the road closure time. The road closures for Saturday 5 October and Sunday 6 October are now between 8am and 4pm. Australian String Quartet I met with Michelle Ingrid Richards from the Australian String Quartet, which is planning a weekend festival of music in Dungog in November 2020. This event will attract around 70 visitors and provides a wonderful opportunity for locals to enjoy these world-renowned performers. Gresford Vacy Football Club

Senior team finals A big turn out in the finals series this year from the club & congratulations to all the teams making it through. Our 12s mixed, 12s girls, 13s & all 5x senior teams qualified through.

In the 1st week both 12s, AAG, O35s, Scorpettes seniors were knocked out. In the 2nd week the 13s were knocked out.

And the Grand final runners up were AA Sat & A grade. Well done to all teams.

She carries out her roles without prompting, with a high degree of professionalism & has immense respect internally to the club, with external association partners & her local community.

Cath is the glue that holds this club firmly together & is much loved. At the Junior Presentation on Sat 14th Sept at Sunscorp Stadium, Sarah White from HVFA presented this to Cath along with Hunter Valley Footballs Volunteer of the a heap of young Scorpions to YEAR – back to back scorps Back in May congratulate her. Well Done Cath. Here’s to another 10 or 20 years. this year it was a delight to announce that the HV Volunteer of the Month award was Junior Presentation Saturday 14th Sept given to Cathy Easdown sneekingly at her saw both junior & senior presentations training session. And how do you top that resulting from many remarkable people you ask? The club is excited to congratulate in our club contributing week in, week the very awesome Cathy Easdown for now out in their own time, for the good of being awarded the HVFA Newcastle the club & community.
