Gresford Vacy Football Club 100% Grand final success and Club Presentations events In

Junior Presentation Saturday 15th Sept saw both glorious junior & senior presentations resulting from many remarkable people in our club contributing week in, week out in their own time, for the good of the club and community, and not themselves.

Senior Presentation A big night followed for the seniors at the Hotel Beatty that was expertly organised by Myf & Kris Doyle.

Our A, P, G, 35s grades and women's K team were in fine form for another great event to conclude the year.

Team wise – everyone’s a winner here with the ladies team likely being the crowd favourites under Amy Merchants & Andy Kidds excellent leadership, however the success of both G grade as major premiers lead by Luke Kijko & Tommy Everett plus Lino, and Over 35s with both the minor

and major premierships lead by Damo Crouch, Kris Doyle & Mark Bickerdike are also very worthy winners. Saturday P grade whilst not dominating this year, is a club favourite team we want to see continue for years to come.

Individually – Many great awards aplenty, but special mention to Bryce Lloyd for goal of the year in P grade, Brett Tobias for Golden boot and Andy Kidd for clubman of the year. All very well deserved!

Riding for a cause

Gresford sure knows how to rodeo and the 2018 Gresford Rodeo was no exception. Huge entries across the weekend, big smiles and even a spattering of rain, it was a fantastic celebration for the whole community.

And of course in the end all funds made from the weekend go to the Hunter Region Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, a more than worthy cause.

With in-excess of 1400 nominations for the campdraft alone, the committee decided to split the draft over three days, with the ladies draft held on Sunday morning. Huge credit to our district that even in such a difficult season quality cattle were donated for all events and in the end more than 1200 runs were held across the weekend. Grant Whatham won the Open for Open and Joe Burgess won the Open. Huge thanks to the Committee’s own Warwick Lawrence and family, for handcrafting and donating all the trophies for the winners over the three days.

With a great crowd turning out for the first day of drafting and the Junior Rodeo on Friday night it set the scene for a fantastic weekend. The rodeo got back underway at 9am on Saturday to accommodate the large number of

entries – a sign of the popularity of the annual Gresford event.

It was great to see so many local competitors across the day in everything from the juniors through to senior events. And of course, the crowd delighted when the evening belonged to Cliff Richardson, who took his great form so far in 2018 into his home arena, with a strong performance to claim first place in the Open Bullride with a score of 85. Fellow Gresford alumni Todd Litchfield and Oscar Leake divided fourth and fifth positions. Also one to note, Cliff’s littlest brother William Richardson took out third in the under eight Steer Ride.

The skies threatened all day and brought a short shower right before the start of the main program, but the sizeable crowd that did venture to the rodeo was in for some great entertainment. The top six open bullriders competing in a shootout at the end of the night kept everyone entertained!

Some of the other results include Kerry Wellington winning the Open Saddlebronc with Gresford Committee member Grant Eldridge placing third.

While Grant’s son Bailey claimed second in the highly popular mini bulls event.

Vacy Village Country Carnival

On Sunday September 9, the sun shone on The Torryburn Stud Vacy Village Country Carnival as people arrived to enjoy the community spirit of the town’s annual Country Carnival.

This year saw vacy village country carnival go back to the country as we took on a challenge to hold a working dog competition, as well as working horse demonstration to promote the vacy cutting day that is going to be held Saturday 10th October 2018. Even Vacy School got into the country spirit with a hobby horse race which looked to be a big hit, the Blacksmith was busy with many questions on how to fit horse shoes correctly, There was plenty for the motoring enthusiast with the De Olde Land Rover Club of Vacy & Rattlin’ Bones & Engine Groan Tractors from Dungog on display.

The biggest attraction was the dog races with Mini foxes, Jack Russels, Dauschounds and any dog willing to squeeze in the starting box, fighting it out to be in the finals for the inaugural Vacy Cup. Congratulations to the winner, (Archie ) a fox terrier, owner Philip Uren.

All day the crowds enjoyed live entertainment by whiskey business at the farmers hotel & Taylor Hack at the Vacy General Store & the Big Bam Boom Drummers. Everyone enjoyed a laugh and a cold beer at the Farmers Hotel with Willy Do Drop the clown keeping the small and big kids entertained. What an amazing day it was.

It was an early start for Vacy General Store with bacon and egg rolls to start everyone’s day, BUT what a great start.

There was a wide range of food on the day. Amazing hot dogs from the Flying Duck, The Farmers Hotel, lamb roll from Mackies camp ovens, and lots more.

The Vacy Village community atmosphere really shone on the day with the committee announcing the day a resounding success. The committee acknowledges such a day would not be possible without so much support. Many thanks to the main sponsors of the day, Torryburn Stud as well as all the other sponsors, supporters and enthusiastic volunteers for helping make the 2018 Vacy Village Country Carnival such a wonderful day.

Sesquicentenary celebrations at Gresford Public School Gresford Public School stepped back in time on Saturday, September 22, as it celebrated 150 years of teaching and learning. Students – past and present – enjoyed the day of singing, dancing, puppets, games and history as old friendships were renewed and longforgotten schoolyard tales were recalled.

The sesquicentenary celebrations included an historic classroom, demonstrations of the technology and robotics used today, walls and walls of history covering the entire 150 years of education at Gresford Public School, puppet shows by Frank’s Fantastic Fairy Tale Theatre, school tours, performances by today’s students, the unveiling of a beautiful student mural, launch of a commemorative booklet, a range of stalls and entertainment.

Principal Pauline Mitchell was delighted with the success of the day that saw hundreds of people travelling from near and far to join the celebrations.

“We were thrilled to see so many of our ex-students, families and friends of the school gather to celebrate the school’s proud history,” Said Mrs Mitchell, who has been principal at the school since 2002.

A highlight of the celebrations was the cutting of the anniversary cake by former students Beryl Capp (Randall), 94, and Deidre Lawrence (Dark), 89, and the school’s youngest student Charlotte Marsh, 5.

John Millburn, Director of Educational Leadership (Hunter Network), recognised Gresford Public School as “a gem in the Hunter” and marvelled at the deep connections the school had forged with its community.

The day of celebrations was the result of months of planning, with school staff and students combining with the P&C and wider community to create an event that has added to the richness of Gresford Public School as the next chapter in the school’s history begins.

Paterson Allyn Garden Group Dear Gardeners, in the past month I have discovered two gardens, so different in form and plantings, but each an absolute joy to wander. I have never considered planting a rainforest on my riverbank, but not far away on the edge of Paterson lies an exquisite rainforest walk created by Mal and Judy Henry. I came home thinking if Mal can do it, so can I. Mal decided to study horticulture and then embarked on a remarkable journey of discovery. His plantings include Tamarind (Diploglottis australis), Yellow Ash (Emmenosperma alphitonioides), Rosewood (Dysoxylum fraserianum), Blueberry Ash, (Elaeocarpus reticulatus) and even Red Cedar (Toona ciliata var.australis) which has been guarded from Red Cedar tip moth by the use of cover crops such as wattles. All trees are flourishing and selfseeding now. What an incredible legacy for future generations to cherish.

The second garden that has personally given me much joy, is one on the edge of

garden. Prue said her mother in law gave them to her after purchasing from a plant stall. The seller told her they were AOV’s.

She happily nurtured them for years….as AOV’s (any other variety) until told by a horticultural friend that they are ground orchids. Prue has two magnificent Chinese Fringe Flowers ( Loropetalum) at the entrance of a pergola. They have stunning deep magenta coloured flowers covering the compact plant in spring and autumn. A good spread up to 2 meters and height 1.5 meters makes this plant a wonderful specimen for any garden.

I suppose I should open the garden gate and let the cattle eat all the clover growing in my lawn. There isn’t much of it growing in the paddocks. I’m not going to kill it off, as Dicamba, the chemical found in weed killers for clover Mal and Judy Henry, Paterson and bindii can be lethal on surrounding Dungog. It would be a couple of acres of shrubs and trees. what I consider to be a perfect country garden, filled with plants gifted by family and friends over 30 odd years. It has the most amazing Poinciana growing in the back garden, along with an Xanthorrhoea australis, commonly known as Grass tree.

Jolliffe Family Reunion On September 1 a reunion of the Jolliffe family, relatives and friends was held on the Gresford Showground. Around 70-80 people attended, with attendees coming from Roma, Canberra, Port Macquarie, Brisbane, Sydney, Lismore, Wingham, Aberdeen, Newcastle and locally. Many old acquaintances were remade and relatives met for the first time.

Donations were accepted to fence the family cemetery at Carrabolla. While this did fall short of our target we hope to get the project done eventually, maybe on a reduced budget.

Later in the afternoon everybody moved over to the Historical Society's Museum for the unveiling of the commemorative artwork done by Bill Cummins in memory of Gerald Capararo (a descendent of the Jollife's and a world champion rough rider).

The unveiling was done by Neville Cowley, a close friend of Gerald's for many years, who also travelled on the rodeo circuit with him.

The museum has some of Gerald's rough riding gear on display, which guests were able to see, all of it made by himself.

record my ideas and surroundings. When I discovered chalk pastels at art school, they opened up a whole new world of possibilities and I found I was freer to express myself with this medium.

On our living room wall when I was growing up was a lithograph by bird illustrator Neville Cayley, and I believe that his work inspired my love of birds and the natural world. I started painting birds when I fifteen and today I not only paint birds but rescue them also.

I work in gouache, chalk pastel and acrylics, depending on my mood and the subject matter. We also discussed the need for an upgrade to Paterson train station to allow for accessibility.

Brad and Robert were very engaged in the discussion and have gone away to crunch some numbers regarding the current service and look at historical figures. If anyone has some information on the previous train timetable, i.e. actual or anecdotal evidence which could strengthen our case, please pass it on to me.

I would like to thank Jenny and Allen for bringing this matter to the attention of Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald. Scot has intervened on our behalf to get it on the radar of Trains NSW. Thanks also to Dungog Train Stationmaster, Steven Micevski, for sending a support email to Brad and Robert.

Government that spending $14-$17 million on the Brig O’ Johnson Bridge in Clarence Town is not a good use of taxpayers’ money – this spend will not see any improvement in the bridge capacity, it will only reinstate a one-way heritage listed bridge with no pedestrian access. A second bridge would still be required, if the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage allowed this to occur, and a further $11 million would be required for the second bridge requiring Council to take out a $5.5M loan to match a grant from the NSW State Government.

So, the overall spend would be in the vicinity of $25 - $28M. It would be ideal if RMS would go back to the drawing board on the Brig O’ Johnson Bridge, with a fit-for-purpose financially responsible solution to service the residents of our Shire’s largest growth area. Michael agreed to support us in our endeavours.

Clarence Town Progress Association (CTPA) The GM, Councillors Rayward and Low and I attended the CTPA AGM and general meeting last week. The GM updated the members on the Brig O’ Johnson Bridge funding concern and fielded questions from the meeting regarding Council activities (ie: sports ground maintenance, Section 94 funds and Council’s finances). Dowling St Upgrade

27 August 2018 Special Rates Variation (SRV) Survey There has been a great response to the SRV survey, with hundreds of replies already received, so thanks to all of you who have participated and taken an interest in the future of your Shire. Staff will be collating the results in September.

I will share the results of this survey once they have been collated.

Port Stephens-Hunter Local Area Command (LAC) Community Safety Precinct Meeting These meetings are held in Raymond Terrace and Maitland and given that we stretch across both parts of the command, I attend both meetings. The meetings are a chance to make the LAC aware of issues that our community is facing and to get feedback on what the police are targeting. I was asked by community members on the western side of the Shire to bring up the issue of speeding in the 50km local precincts and in the 40km school zones. This was also an issue raised at the recent Clarence Town community police meeting. Chief Inspector Glen Blain took note of this issue and will raise it with highway patrol. Again, the best thing that we can do as a community is make sure we are reporting the incidents to the police.

This intelligence is used to target certain areas and times in which to place the police in these areas.

I have also invited the LAC to hold a community meeting on the western side of the Shire, as requested by the community. General Manager, Coralie Nichols, is following this up with Chief Inspector Blain.

Small Business Month The DDCC, with assistance from Council staff, will run a Shop Local campaign in Small Business Month to be held in October 2018. The DDCC is finalising the details of this and is expecting to deliver a successful campaign similar to one run a few years ago that involved the Dungog Dollars concept. I encourage local businesses to get behind this Shop Local campaign and will provide more details in my next update. In the meantime feel free to contact the newly re-elected DDCC President, Jenny Lewis.

Jane Caro

Caro’s sub-heading is From high anxiety to not giving a toss – a (mostly) fearless memoir, and this sums up both the style and content of her book.

Caro is known as a strong advocate of public schools, and is now making a living as a public speaker and consultant. She started work in the advertising industry as a copywriter, and moved on to become part of a successful creative team. The ad she is most proud of is the one where a young man, on his way to a job interview, stops in the rain to help a woman whose car has broken down. He arrives at the interview late, wet and muddy – and gets the job. It is for an NRMA roadside mechanic.

In spite of her successes in advertising she eventually tired of the industry, and discusses its shortcomings with directness and vigour. One of the main problems was the difficulty women had in progressing into positions of greater status and responsibility, as well as predatory sexist attitudes and arrogance in some upper echelons. However, she also shares aspects of her personal life, including the harrowing story of her first-born child, who almost died of a respiratory infection. The anxiety she mentions in the sub-heading dogged her for much of her life, but through trial and error, she eventually found the right kind of support to overcome it. Caro’s voice is refreshing and down to earth and there are plenty of photographs to help the reader connect with her family and life. This is an interesting and entertaining book.

The enthusiasm for CORE (Community Owned Renewable Energy) continued on Saturday 25th August with 31 people gathering over afternoon tea at the Uniting Church Hall to discuss their visions for energy generation in the shire in the next 20 years. Participants proposed such visions as “a carbon neutral town, community energy security, pride of ownership, access to all, and reinvesting in community”. And they envisioned a great range of project ideas, including: bulk buy & sell solar concepts, bio-energy using waste from the tip and timber mills; and pumped hydro. Some of the district’s past energy generation was mentioned as inspiration – did you know a hydro plant on the Williams River at the old butter factory in Dungog was used to create electricity in the 1930s?

The meeting followed the success of the CORE expert panel discussion held in National Science Week in mid August.
