Dungog Shire Council is providing a Kerbside Green Waste Clean-up for Residential premises within the 50km SIGN POSTED town areas of the following villages: Dungog, Clarence Town, Gresford, East Gresford, Paterson, Vacy and Martins Creek. Collections will commence on Monday 10 October. Residents are requested to put their Green Waste out the weekend before, at their normal weekly collection point. 2 cubic metres of green waste will be accepted from each household. Acceptable items are: • Garden Prunings and tree limbs no longer than 1.8 metres and 250mm in diameter. • Lawn clippings and loose material must be in sturdy cardboard boxes. • All green waste must be securely tied with rope or string (not wire) into bundles. • All material must be of a manageable size for one person to lift. Unacceptable Items: • Large tree trunks & thorny bushes • Items in plastic bags (including woven poly bags) • Tree Stumps larger than 250mm in diameter • Timber with bolts, brackets etc. • Sawdust • Bundles secured with wire • Loose items • Any items other than Green Waste The contractor and Council have the right to reject any material that they consider unacceptable. Arboretum planting
In the grounds of the Therese Doyle Hall where the Historical Society now has their headquarters, two advanced Lacebark trees (Brachychiton discolor) have recently been planted. They are a gift from Libby and Dugald Alison, “Nulla Nulla” Dungog. They will form the entrance of the arboretum that will be planted on Sunday 30th October which is Grandparents (Grandfriends) day. Approximately 200 native rainforest trees are being nurtured by Noel Jupp and the Gresford Community Group is generously supporting this extremely important environmental project. We are extending an invitation to children and their grandparents or grandfriends to help plant the trees. A photograph will be taken of each planting and a book published with all photos and names included and presented to the Gresford Historical Society. Just imagine in fifty years when the arboretum is brimming with mature trees, and the next generation of grandparents proudly show off their achievement to their grandchildren.

Community Dinner
Our next Community Dinner will be at the Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club on Friday 14 October, meeting at 6pm for a pre dinner drink and an early dinner for the children. We welcomed a number of new families last dinner and they brought their young which was great. The Bowling Club has plenty of space and the food is good too and they cater for all tastes. The Age of Innocence and Two Other Complete Works of Love, Morals, and Manners Edith Wharton You don’t go to Edith Wharton for a happy ending, but for a nuanced understanding of the human heart and spirit, she’s your writer. Wharton herself was born into the upper echelons of New York society, and therefore knew well the world she was satirising in The Age of Innocence, which was made into an exquisite film by Martin Scorsese. The rigidity of society, and the stifling conventions of the time create the backdrop for a sublimated passion. Wharton won the Pulitzer Prize for The Age of Innocence in 1921

The program aims to increase regular and on-going participation opportunities in sport. There are four project types within the program, these being: 1. Sport Development 2. Community Sport Events 3. Sport Access 4. Facility Development. Applicants must be Incorporated, notfor-profit grassroots sport clubs. Organisations must contribute to the project, the higher the contribution the more favourable it will be looked upon. This can be a financial contribution or through use of voluntary labour, donated materials and/or equipment or other resources directly related to the project. Third party organisations are also encouraged to contribute, including Local Government Authorities and these contributions will be counted as part of the club contribution. Gresford CWA News Gresford CWA continues to flourish. The CWA of NSW is very proactive in supporting services for country New South Wales and supporting medical research at this time it is Lyme’s Disease. We welcome new members Margaret Hill, Kylie Bannister and Margaret Watson.

Devil Ark At our September meeting Ruth Hardy chair person of Devil Ark spoke of the breeding programme in the Barrington Tops. Devil Ark provides a mainland breeding sanctuary for the endanged Tasmanian Devil, in the hope of preventing the extinction of Australia’s beloved devil due to the devastating Devil Facial Tumour Disease. As part of the Wild Devil Recovery Project eleven males and eleven females from Devil Ark were released back to the Forestier’s
Peninsula in Tasmania in November 2015. This fenced off peninsula was established to create a safe environment for the devils so they could build up a wild population of disease free devils.
BOOK CLUB Meets on the second Saturday of the month in the CWA rooms at 3pm. The book for discussion in October is “The Golden Age” by Joan London. This book won the Prime Minister’s award for 2016. If anyone has read the book or was involved with polio in the 1950s please come along, you do not have to be a member, gentleman also welcome. We will have some first hand experiences to talk about. Afternoon tea and a lively discussion. FRENCH IN THE LIBRARY Glenda Smith will open the CWA library on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 11am to 12.30. At the same time she will conduct elementary French conversation. All welcome male and female. ROAST PUMPKIN AND BACON SOUP
Ingredients:
1.25kg pumpkin peeled and cut into chunks 2 tbs olive oil 4 rashers bacon, diced 1 large onion chopped 1 litre vegetable stock 1 large carrot chopped 1 stick celery chopped Sour cream to serve (optional) or parsley finely chopped
Method: Preheat oven to moderate 180 fan forced. Put pumpkin on a greased baking dish lightly brush with half the oil. Bake for 25mins. Or until softened and slightly browned around the edges. Heat the remaining oil in a large pan or soup boiler. Cook the bacon and then remove from pan. Cook the onion for a couple of minutes then add carrot and celery and cook a further 3 to 4 mins stirring frequently. Add the roasted pumpkin, stock and bacon. Bring to the boil reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool a little then puree in batches in a blender or food processor. Return soup to pan and gently reheat without boiling. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Top with sour cream or parsley as desired. Serves 6. Gresford Photographic Exhibition
Gresford rose to the challenge with the 3Village Art Photographic Exhibition being an overwhelming success with nearly 600 residents, visitors and even interstate people visiting the Exhibition over the 3 days. St Anne’s Hall looked its finest for the Red Carpet opening on Friday night, with lights, action and Clare Oliver and her camera. Before entering St Anne’s Hall guests strolled along the red carpet, then entered the Hall to view a brilliant
exhibition of photographic art amongst the twinkling of lights. Photography on display covered a broad spectrum of the art form, from stunning local imagery to classical international works from top professionals David Oliver and Peter Eastway and the unique flower imagery of Jacquie Dean. Several local young photographers including Isaiah Huthnance and James Jenkins demonstrated great skill and future potential in the art form and they were
rewarded with sales. “The committee needs to be congratulated,” said Pip Wilson and Pete Morton from Dungog, “it all looks fantastic”. Martin and Carolyn Addison said they felt it was one of the top three functions held in their more than 40 years of living in Gresford and Freda Collison had the final say on Sunday afternoon “it is truly magnificent”. This was indeed a very memorable 'reunion' day for ex-residents, residents, old school mates, friends and family. Visitors and workers to the local area from many years ago were also there. Between 130 and 140 people attended and everyone relished in the fact that this was an advantageous opportunity to catch up with many from past years. Manse house still remain collectively opposite the ex-school. Now privately owned, they still hold good memories of how the Eccleston community once was. Visitors on the day ranged in ages with a slightly larger percentage of people aged 60 and over. Some 80 plus and a couple of 90 plus. The majority of older family surnames connected to the Allyn River Valley were represented well. The GDHSI had a visitors book to which nearly everyone signed.

Inside Eccleston Fire Services Shed
headmaster of Eccleston Public School and then Halton Public School from 1918 to 1931. Being an avid photographer and adventurer Edgar Marceau carried out a lot of discovery visits around the Allyn River Valley and Barrington Tops. He took amazing photos of scenery and its natural features, people and the way life was during this early era.
Eccleston Fire Services committee and family members especially 'The Hipwell Family', for helping to make the 'Back to the Allyn River Valley Day' a reality and a rewarding day. Mrs Judy McMahon (nee Warr) was of great assistance in contacting people. ' Special thanks' to GDHSI support persons Ruby and Ivy Sales, Rojer Hancock, Michael Green, Jill Hancock and Joe Munger.
Allan's book is very well written with a lot of Edgar's photographs. At $20 this book is certainly a worthy addition to the Gresford District Historical Society history collection. Many of these books have been sold already.
Should anyone wish to view further local history, memorabilia from the past or be able to give historical input then visit the new Gresford District Historical Society 'Museum' Sundays, special event days or by appointment.

Create: Art Carnival
Established in 2008 Gresford Public School’s biennial fundraiser Create: Art Carnival is a “must” on the calendas of many Hunter Valley small schools. This year saw students from Dungog, Vacy, Kirkton and Paterson Public Schools travel to Gresford Public School for a day of creative and visual arts workshops run by professional artists and community volunteers. It’s like a sports carnival but for art. With 150 students participating the
Gresford Public School to bolster art, literacy, music and gifted and talented programs over the next two years. Circus Makes a Comeback with GAPS

In their twentieth year of performance, and their twelfth production, GAPS has brightened the stage of the Gresford School of Arts once again with a lively play called Cirque Solamé. It is the tale of the benighted Tingling family circus, which is down and almost out after the loss of their beloved mentor, Hans R. Tingling, and years of nefarious treatment by a blackmailing family member. In true fairy-tale style, the faith of the youngest family member unites with the willingness of the circus performers to adapt, and they are transformed into a

can-can act par excellence, (We Think We Can Can-Can) while Scott Lawrence, the tongue-tied ventriloquist, proved himself as an expressive clown. Three enigmatic characters were Fortunata, the fortune-teller who could tell the past (beautifully portrayed by Barbara Merriman); Rousty Bout, the drifter with secrets (an impressive return from John Kember) and Thermaphrodite the double act, sensationally presented by Lyndell Osmond with vocal input by John Kember. John, Dotti and Scott also formed the Gresford Galoshes and Gum Boot Tap Troupe to provide an intriguing synchronised swimming act,
and John, Scott and Allyn were joined by Malcolm Watson, the dependable stage hand, to perform as the Whistling Hat Men, which required a certain degree of nerve. Glenda Smith, the director, took on a small role as newsreader to open each act.

The crew of Rohan Staines on sound, and Peter Berghofer on lighting, did an admirable job of enhancing the performances with their technical skill, with pre-performance assistance from Paul Wilson and Tony Schultz. The popular musical choices were sourced by Sharon Lawrence with back-up from Kel Merriman, and Donna Graham took
Denise Sellens and Coleen Litchfield did their usual impeccable job of House Management and Catering, while the costumes they created were remarkable. The kitchen staff were untiring; and the bar services provided by Gresford Bowling Club lubricated the evening to everyone’s satisfaction. Over the last twenty years there have been stalwart audiences comprising both local people and those from further away, and these supporters also deserve congratulations for helping sustain the joy of live theatre in Gresford.

Exhibition of Draft Paterson River Flood Study Vacy to Hinton A Draft Paterson River Flood Study for the Paterson River catchment from Vacy to Hinton has been undertaken by Dungog, Port Stephens and Maitland Councils with support from the NSW Floodplain Management Program. It has quantified flood behaviour in the study area and the modelling tools that have been developed will assist the three councils to undertake flood related planning decisions for future and existing development using the latest information. Vacy Village Country Carnival Cookup Through the generosity of local businesses and people from Vacy, Gresford and Paterson with their donations, 'Mackie's' has once again been able to be supportive to our local area. A big 'Thankyou' to local friends who diligently helped Mackies out on Carnival day. 'Mackies' in preparation for lamb sandwiches
Considering the very iffy weather with pending rain, the Vacy Village Country Carnival progressed on through the day successfully. Visiting people were down some but the end result for 'Mackie's Original Vacy Camp Oven Cooking' was once again very successful.
With a raffle inclusive, Mackie's lamb sandwiches rolled over $3,696. This will be distributed between the Vacy Village Country Carnival Fund for support to any local community organisations. One third will go to the Gresford District Historical Society.

Community Matters The Gresford Community Group would like to update you and your group with our events and happenings in the Gresford Community for the remainder of this year. Traffic Controllers Course is planned for late September. You might have an event planned that will require someone to control traffic – parking etc and with events like the Billy Cart Darby we require Traffic Controllers. Traffic Controller’s guideline requires all people attend a course to obtain their tickets to operate and control traffic. For any event the cost to hire professional controllers is very expensive. The Gresford Community Group is planning to run a day course so Gresford will have its share of traffic controllers. Cost is being shared by Dungog Shire Events and the Gresford Billy Cart Derby. The captains Ride 2016 Paterson's local massage, sports therapist and Reiki healer, Tony Fort, is in training for the bike ride of his life to raise funds for the Steve Waugh Foundation. A select group of up to 70 riders will take on the enormous challenge to ride the significant and symbolic route, averaging 140 km's per day, predominantly uphill from Bowral to Mount Kosciusko. The cyclists will be tested to their physical and emotional limits, fostering team work and comradeship. This six day challenge starts on the 29th of October through to the 3rd of November. From the outset the idea and motivation of the Captain's ride has been clear - to raise significant funds to build awareness about rare diseased and the bravery of the kids who live with them. Funds raised will make a genuine and positive impact on the young people living with rare chronic diseases and support their families. Our local participant, Tony Fort, has pledged to raise a minimum of $10,000 for the Steve Waugh Foundation as he is passionate about improving the lives of children living with rare diseases and giving aid to their families who are also pushed to their limits emotionally and physically. Tony is in training and recently went for a ride with Steve Waugh to discuss fund raising projects and the epic ride ahead. Weighbridge at Waste Facility The Dungog Waste Management Facility has been revamped through the installation of a state of the art weighbridge. The requirement to install weighbridges is now mandatory for all waste facilities in NSW and is aimed at obtaining more accurate data in relation to waste generated throughout the State. While all waste loads will be weighed for reporting purposes, not all loads will be charged by weight. Cars, utes and small box trailers will still be subject to a standard minimum charge, notwithstanding the weight of their loads, the same as they have always been. It is the larger vehicles that will be charged by weight – $220 per tonne for Municipal, Building and Demolition and Commercial waste. This fee is one of the lowest in the Hunter Valley and is calculated to cover the costs of operation of the facility as well as the NSW Government Waste Levy of $78.20/tonne”. Mr Minett requested that the public be patient as staff become familiar with the use of the weighbridge operating system, which includes changed traffic flow conditions controlled by traffic lights and a new computer system. Other changes include the construction of a new gatehouse and office, the provision of new staff and customer amenities including disabled facilities. The name of the property has also changed from the Dungog Landfill to the Dungog Waste Management Facility.
