With 70mm of rain early in the week, things weren’t looking good for the annual Gresford Campdraft and Rodeo. By the time the weekend came around, the weather god’s were onboard and it turned out to be sensational weather for some of Australia’s best cowboy’s and cowgirl’s to show their talent.

‘Show and Shine’ at Gresford Market Day

The Maitland Classic Motor Association Inc. ‘Show and Shine’ displayed approximately 70 vehicles and 20 motor bikes in the grounds of the Beatty Hotel at the September Gresford Market.

Visitors attending throughout the day responded well to the display of these much loved motors.

Stall numbers were down and one new stall was present with cold gourmet treats. Considering that many other local events were taking place such as the Vacy Village Country Carnival, GDHSI President, George Sales, reported that our local community group stall holders faired well overall.

Light drizzly rain started the day off but by mid morning the weather was lifting and by midday the sun was out. Great music accompanied the day’s events from two live bands.

The GDHSI raffle consisted of items relevant to looking after our vehicles.

First prize – vehicle pressure cleaner was won by Rosita Richardson. Second prize – vehicle care kit and bucket was won by

Next month’s GDHSI Gresford Community Market Day will be a celebratory occasion. Family members connected to the Beatty Hotel will celebrate 150 years of being in the local hotel business spanning over five generations. A flower competition and local tractor show will also take place.

Gresford CWA News International days A number of our members have enjoyed visiting the International Days of neighboring CWA branches of Singleton and Paterson.

PARTNERSHIPS Financial support will be given by the CWA of NSW to the following organisations: • The Salvation Army for the implementation of a rural alcohol and other drugs (AOD) program to provide a mobile and responsive weekly service in key geographical locations in NSW up to $160,000.

• Rape and Domestic Violences Service to Australia – to provide professional development opportunities for workers in rural areas – $50,000.

The

SPINACH PIE

Ingredients

1kg spinach 1/3 cup olive oil 1 cup chopped spring onions 125g feta cheese, crumbled 3 tablespoons parmesan cheese 2 tablespoons parsely, chopped 4 eggs, lightly beaten ½ teaspoon nutmeg Salt and pepper 3 or 4 sheets of puff pastry

Method: Pre-heat oven. Shred spinach, place in steamer or colander, cover and steam for 8 minutes to wilt the spinach.

Drain off all moisture (squeeze) and cool. Fry onions until soft in olive oil.

Stir in cheeses, herbs, eggs, nutmeg and season to taste. Place filling on edge of thawed pastry sheets. Roll into large cylinder. Brush with egg wash.

Place on baking sheets and cook at 180degrees C for 45 minutes. Cut into individual slices. Makes 3 or 4 rolls.

GREEN WASTE CLEAN UP 2 TO 6 November 2015 Dungog Shire Council is providing a Kerbside Green Waste Clean-up for Residential premises within the 50km SIGN POSTED town areas of the following villages: Dungog, Clarence Town, Gresford, East Gresford, Paterson, Vacy and Martins Creek.

Collections will commence on Monday 2 November. Residents are requested to put their Green Waste out the weekend prior, at their normal weekly collection point.

2 cubic metres of green waste will be accepted from each household.

Acceptable items are: • Garden Prunings and tree limbs no longer than 1.8 metres and 250mm in diameter.

• Lawn clippings and loose material must be in sturdy cardboard boxes.

• All green waste must be securely tied with rope or string (not wire) into bundles.

• All material must be of a manageable size for one person to lift.

Unacceptable Items: • Large tree trunks & thorny bushes • Items in plastic bags (including woven poly bags) • Tree Stumps larger than 250mm in diameter • Timber with bolts, brackets etc.

• Sawdust • Bundles secured with wire • Loose items • Any items other than Green Waste The contractor and Council have the right to reject any material that they consider unacceptable.

A-GRADE AT GRESFORD! Campdraft

With more than 70mm of rain falling in the local area in the week leading up to the campdraft many thought the annual event may have been called off. All but the team of organisers who stuck to the game plan and put on an A-grade event which was hotly contested and spectated by one of the biggest crowds Gresford has ever seen.

Gresford Junior and Open Rodeo Friday afternoon saw many up and coming junior competitors do battle with the junior rodeo being the first round of the East Coast Junior Rodeo Championships. Barrel racing kicked the evening off with the U11 division being taken out by Kaydee Hernando, the 11-14 being won by Matt Canham and Kaysha Cornes being the winner of the 14-18 barrel race. The Junior Breakaway Roping proved to be a hotly contested event with Kai Clark coming out on top with a time of 3.16 seconds. At the roughstock end of the arena, the U8 Steer Ride was a crowd pleaser with Levi Ward taking the event out, closely followed by Logan George. In the other Steer Riding events, Riley Langdon took out the 8-11 division with a huge 77 point ride. The 11-14 Steer Ride was won by Christopher Wilson and Taine Nash took out the 14-18 Steer Ride. The Junior Bull Ride saw 27 young bullriders do battle with some top quality bulls supplied by the Fitzsimmons bros and TNR Bucking Bulls. The event was taken out by local competitor Toby Leake.

The open rodeo kicked off at 10am Saturday morning with non-stop action right through the 9pm that night. Both junior and open events had big entries.

Shaelynn Harnando, the 11-14 by Braith Nock and the 14-18 by Kaysha Cornes once again. The Junior Breakaway Roping saw Tamworth cowgirl Anna Crisp claim the event with a 3.56 second run. The U8 Steer Ride was once again taken out by Levi Ward, with Angus Etchell coming in second. The 8-11 Steer Ride was won by Cooper Mitchell, the 11-14 won by Thomas Nash and Nicholas Penrose being victorious in the 14-18 Steer Ride. The Novice Saddle Bronc ride was won by Kieran Breiner, with Harley Mackin claiming the Novice Bareback Ride with the only score and Corey Duncan taking out the Novice Bull Ride. The Open Timed Events saw some big numbers in each event and some fierce competition.

Ashleigh Hodson took out the Steer Undecorating with a speedy time of 4.16 seconds. The Breakaway Roping went to Sandra Martin with a 3.45 second run and the Ladies Barrel Race being taken out by Hayley Hill with a time of 15.44 seconds. Glen Chape claimed victory in the Steer Wrestling, Blake Hallam won the Rope and Tie with a 9.82 second run and the Team Roping was taken out by Phillip Peters and Clay Bush with a time of 6.59 seconds. The over 40’s Bull Ride was once again popular amongst

competitors and the crowd. The bulls proved tough with only one score being posted by the consistent cowboy David Leake. David took out the event with his 75 point ride. The Open Roughstock events once again saw big entries and tough competiton. The Open Saddle Bronc ride was won by Walcha cowboy Carl Green with 75 points and the Open Bareback Ride take out by Wade Clifford with an 80 point ride. A great display of bull riding was on show in the Open Bull Ride with Jason O’Hearn being the eventual winner with a score of 85 points.

The Gresford committee would like to thank all involved in making the event a success. Some in particular include the Fitzsimmons brothers, Mitch Russell of TNR Bucking Bulls, the Richardson family and Heath Nichols for the high quality stock provided for both roughstock and timed events. Robbie George, Ross Turnbull, Wade Nichele, Ben McKenzie and Brendon Crawley for keeping all the cowboys safe at the roughstock end of the arena, Steve Watson and Mick Gray for judging the event and Jake Smith and Jesse Glass for an outstanding announcing job. Overall, a great weekend of rodeo action.

The heat was well and truly on for the ‘Mackie’s Original Camp Oven Cookery’ team. A rainy Sunday morning September 20th had Greg (Priestley) piling firewood in the middle of Vacy’s township at 4.30am in readiness for fire building at 6.00am. By 6.30 the flames were flaring in preparation for all the hot coals required throughout the day.

15 large local camp ovens had been collected and by 9.00am 35 legs and shanks of lamb were in the hot ovens.

The shoveling of hot coals took place on and off for changeovers, under and on top of each camp oven until the lamb legs were cooked and ready for carving.

q Gresford District Historical Society r Beatty family history in our local area – A celebrative occasion

‘Beatty’ – this name we immediately relate with our local hotel here in East Gresford – The Beatty Hotel. Family origins of the Beatty name branches back to North Ireland and to the borders of Scotland. The 17th and 18th centuries was to see a family succession of males with the name of John Beatty (Beattie).

Within the early 1840s one of these generational John Beattys arrived in Sydney with his wife Jane (nee Cranston) and young son John (Beatty) who was born in 1837. Their home of origin being the township of ‘Enniskillen’ within the County of Fermanagh, North Ireland.

In time this young family came to the Four Mile Creek area just South East of Maitland to live and work and the young John Beatty now aged 27 years took on a business venture in the small developing township of Vacy.

The township of Vacy was within the large land grant of Coryvale obtained in 1824 by John Cory. In the late 1850s Cory’s youngest son Gilbert Cory had an inn built which became known as the Half-Way House Inn. On the 28th April

1864, within the licencing court of Paterson, a new licence to operate Vacy’s Half-Way House Inn was granted to John Beatty (Beattie). John took over as inn keeper from the original inn keeper Thomas Cordell.

A year later John was charged for allowing gambling to take place on the inn’s premises. He was fined 5 pounds plus court costs. It was not until the 14h June 1866 at the Licencing Court of Paterson that the licence of Vacy’s HalfWay Inn was transferred from John Beatty to Thomas Crotty. In this same year John Alexander Beatty was born to John and his wife Mary (nee Brereton).

In time John Beatty took over the lease from Mr McCormick and opened a hotel business. He also established a tobacco factory with presses just behind the Junction Inn. Charles Boydell died in 1869 aged 61 years and his son James Boydell had a lot of local tobacco growing. Fine tobacco at that with which John Beatty senior was to win prize medals for the final tobacco product. The Beatty tobacco factory was one of the last remaining within the Gresford area.

John Betty was able to transfer this licence into the new building which he named the ‘Victoria Hotel’.

James William Boydell died on the 14th June 1908. His wife Henrietta (nee Champain) and her family were given interest and control in the running of the Camyr Allyn Estate. Camyr Camyr Allyn had commenced to be subdivided and allotments sold. By 1914 more subdivision was taking place. In this period it was John Alexander Beatty Junior who was able to buy the land and freehold of the Victoria Hotel. John Beatty Snr died July 29th 1914 aged 78 years. His wife Mary had died August 4th 1910 aged 75 years.

By the year 1914 John Alexander Beatty was aged 48 years. He had married Mary Catherine ‘Minnie’ Watson on the 26th April in 1899 at St Helen’s Catholic Church, East Gresford. Their first child was a girl, Elvenice Mary Helen, born on the 21st March 1900. Her nickname became ‘Venie’ and stayed with her throughout her life. Another daughter was born to Mary and John in 1910 Beatrice Veronica May. Her nickname became ‘Baby’.

On the 15th August 1931 John Beatty died. Minnie (Mary) died the 2nd November 1935. Both were buried in St Helen’s Catholic Cemetary, East Greford.

Venie, with the assistance of her sister Baby, took over the management role of their family’s hotel. The hotel was named the Beatty Hotel to preserve tradition and the family name. Venie married Alfred Richardson in 1938. They went on to have four children: Helen, then twins Peter and Paul and lastly John.

All had involvement with the Beatty Hotel’s daily operations. Venie was quite a remarkable woman. A third generation Hotel Licensee after her father and grandfather, she continued working in the hotel almost up to her death on the 4th May 1983. Alfred (Alf) had died July 18th 1956 aged 75 years.

After Venie’s death her daughter Helen became Licensee from 1983 to 1985. The Beatty Hotel was then leased out for a period of 12 years. Helen had married Patrick Lawler and their three sons Bernard, Anthony and John were then to have their individual time as Licensee of their family’s hotel business. An agreement was made that each son do at lease five years.

John did so from 1997 through to 2002.

Tony followed suite from 2002 to 2007.

Then it was Bernie’s turn from 2007 to 2012 and continues to do so as Licensee.

There is now a successional line covering five generations and 150 years in the local hotel business – 1865 to 2015. To mark this milestone the Beatty family in conjunction the Gresford District Historical Society Inc have organised a celebrative occasion to take place on Sunday 18th October at the Beatty Hotel.

A family information display and flower competition will be in the old dining room. A local tractor show will occur in the back paddock. The GDHSI Community Market Day will be there and some great music will take place. Come along and enjoy the day’s celebrations.

James Hooke Tocal Deputy Principal James Hooke has been officially announced as Deputy Principal of Tocal College. James has been acting in the position during 2015 and his appointment has been recently confirmed.

“James brings to the position an excellent knowledge of agriculture, farming and education. Dr Cameron Archer, Tocal College Principal said. “He is a graduate of the University of New England and has spent a significant period on the family dairy farm at Dungog. He initially worked at Tocal during 1992 as coordinator of the Dairy Training program. After another period farming he later re-joined the College, again coordinating the dairy and rural traineeship programs. James has excellent rapport with students and is highly regarded by staff”. Dr Archer said.

He is a popular choice for the position and his ability to work with adolescents and assist them through their studies and period at Tocal is an extremely valuable attribute in his role as Deputy Principal.

The Deputy Principal of the College runs all of the youth education programs including responsibility for all residential students. The Deputy Principal works closely with the College Duty Officers and other staff to make sure the student community operates smoothly and is a safe and pleasant environment in which to live and learn.

“I look forward to the challenges of the role of Deputy Principal and I have been enjoying the job to date. I value my association with students and get great satisfaction through seeing them grow and develop during their period at Tocal”. Mr Hooke said.

Goodbye Girlie Patsy Adam-Smith The author of this autobiography (a follow-up to Hear the Train Blow) was obviously a gutsy free spirit, who did not let her times define her. Adam-Smith was a chronicler of Australian life and history, and recorded life in the outback as well as researching the history of war and migration. She was very interested in folklore and the life of ordinary Australians, most particularly of the people she saw as unsung heroes. She was a pre-feminist, in that she rebelled against the expectations society had of women of her time, and worked alongside men in roles that were not traditional: I was the first Australian woman to be articled on a coastal trading ship, to be taken on as an equal by men, to have a freedom few women ever achieve, and to be judged by one standard, the criterion by which everyone is judged on small ships: the ability to work hard and pull your weight and shut up about it.

Writing was the ticket out of an unhappy marriage for Adam-Smith, but her work on boats in the Bass Strait gave her the income she needed to support her two children in the early days of her newly single life. In this book she recounts her World War 2 experiences as a nurse’s aide; her early married life; her life on the boats; her growing success as a writer and the travels her writing gave rise to. She describes herself as a ‘goer’, and this is borne out by the energy with which she tackled life. She also incorporates descriptions and stories of her family, which she was adopted into, most gratefully, and takes the opportunity to attack the sanctimonious attitudes towards illegitimacy that prevailed in her youth.

This is a personal and fascinating account of a particular era of our country, with many photographs to pore over.

Paterson Allyn Garden Group In September we had a lovely hour walking amongst the beauty of Evol and Paul Innes’ Bolwarra garden.

What a lovely garden, so much colour from all the flowers, shade from the trees, interesting little corners, a great vegetable garden, and as for the dolls house Evol how do you do it - I have enough trouble cleaning my house without taking that on as well ... and well I won't mention the lack of weeds in the garden! It was a great garden for the beginning of Spring.

Evol and Paul gave us a brief history of their garden which started 50 years ago and has evolved into a 2 acre block of the most beautiful garden made with love.

Paul told us he planted 88 trees in 1988 and since then it has grown like topsy, once the children moved on and space become free, Evol couldn’t resist growing more flower gardens. Paul, once a farmer always a farmer, has a big veggie garden which could feed the neighbourhood with no trouble. Penny showed us a Viburnum fragrans, a late winter/spring flowering shrub and Michelia yunnanensis, a spring flowering shrub with lemon scented flowers.

A Vetch with a purple Pea Flower came from Eileen’s who was concerned that it could be a noxious weed but Penny reassured us it was from the Legume family and was good for the soil, the stock seem to like it also. Peter told us to be aware this is the time for the dreaded Citrus leaf miner and to spray with Eco Oil each two weeks to deter this destroying citrus bug, they love new shoots.
