This month’s meeting was held at the property of Jan Healy in Farley & we were once again blessed with a beautiful, blue sky day for the 38 members & visitors to enjoy each other’s company & also, to learn a bit about what we can do to create a better environment for our gardens to prosper. After Jillian welcomed everyone & Ron made us aware of all the hazards to be avoided, she introduced Jan who gave us a brief rundown on her property.
Having only been in residence for a couple of years, most of which have been spent converting the property from a menagerie, with a wide variety of creatures, great & small, into a more garden focussed block. While it is an ongoing work in progress, Jan believes in an ‘unstructured’ garden philosophy & is happy to try anything & if it works, well & good. Her goal is to create a space to be able to enjoy & relax in. With quite a large canvas to work with, she & her family can look forward to spending a fair amount of time creating a garden idyll to enjoy. Jillian then introduced Dr. Ernie Harbot, our special guest speaker who is a very highly qualified specialist, involved in all things dealing with Soil Health & Composting, which really are the basic building blocks for healthy, productive plants. Dr. Harbot is extremely knowledgeable about her subject & her enthusiasm is highly infectious & as we quickly learnt, this is a hugely complex topic, with so many components interacting with each other, it is easy to get overwhelmed but, in simple terms the soil is a living organism with a symbiosis of air, water, microbes & plants working together to produce the nutrients that underpin a self-perpetuating cycle of soil improvement.
Composting can be a significant contributing factor in this cycle by providing a great deal of the energy required for the process of converting all the ingredients into the fuel that drives the dynamic ‘factories’ in our gardens. For more information & answers, you can turn to the ‘Singleton Soil Sisters’ on Facebook where you can dip your toes in the water or, more appropriately, dig your fingers into the soil, of this fascinating & intriguing topic. Jillian thanked Jan for hosting our group & presented her with a gift, then everyone had an opportunity to collar Dr. Ernie with their own particular soil & compost issues while we all had a wander around the extensive grounds. Don’t forget to check the website pagardengroup.org for information regarding our next meeting on the 17th November.

• November 2026, p 7 Gresford’s Story Preserved in New Historical Publication – GDHS The story of Gresford and its surrounding district is being brought to life in a new very readable historical publication by Gresford Historical Society coinciding with the 200th anniversary of European settlement in the area in 2026. The publication explores the district’s history from the first European land grants in 1826, when George Townshend, Charles Boydell and Alexander Park became major landholders, through to the development of West and East Gresford as important rural communities. It traces the growth of agriculture, dairying and timber industries, the establishment of local businesses and community services, and the evolution of the towns we know today. Historic photographs, maps and other archival material help illustrate the people, places and events that shaped the district.
Gresford 200 years of European settlement 1826-2026 A bi-centennial review
Importantly, the publication also acknowledges that European settlement marked a profound turning point for the Aboriginal people who had lived on this land for thousands of years. The Gringai people, closely associated with the Paterson, Allyn, Williams and Chichester valleys, experienced displacement, the loss of traditional food sources and the disruption of their cultural life as settlement expanded. Published by the Gresford Historical Society 2026
The publication draws on historical accounts, family records and other sources to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the district’s complex past and the people whose lives have contributed to its story. For longtime residents, it offers an opportunity to revisit familiar stories and places, and discover more about our heritage. For newer residents and younger generations, it provides a valuable introduction to the history of the Gresford area.

The container can be inspected on site behind the Therese Doyle Community Hall, 12 Park Street, East Gresford. Fixed price: $3,500.

The Happiest Man on Earth Eddie Jaku
Eddie Jaku is a Holocaust survivor who migrated to Australia after the war, and lived until he was 101. Eddie survived immense suffering and loss but was able to look at his life in a positive way, because he felt the gifts outweighed the pain. His skill as a toolmaker helped him stay alive in the concentration camps, and friendship and a strong will helped him endure them. Eddie used to tell the story of his life at the Jewish Museum in Sydney and once told a group of Dungog High students that he sang in the shower every morning, even though his wife asked him not to, because his singing wasn’t very good. ‘I sing because I am happy!’ he said. His positivity and grace were very inspiring to the students. His story is told in a very clear and straightforward way, and resonates as the voice of the person at the centre of distressing horror, who does not lose his own moral compass.. • November 2026, p 10 Hello Gresford Market !
A little morning drizzle couldn’t dampen the spirits at the return of the Gresford Community Market, with a fantastic turnout of visitors and an impressive array of creative stalls making the October event a resounding success. The much-loved market made its welcome return, bringing together local makers, artists, musicians, producers and the wider community for a morning filled with colour, creativity and community spirit. Despite the less-than-perfect weather,
stallholders turned out in force, filling their spaces with an exciting variety of handmade treasures, locally produced goods, crafts, art, jewellery, homewares and more. There was plenty to browse, discover and admire, with the talent and imagination of local creators on full display. Just as encouraging was the support from the community. Visitors came along to explore the stalls, check out the Gresford RFS fire truck, catch up with familiar faces and support local small businesses, proving
that there is a real appetite for a market that celebrates the best of the Gresford district. For organisers, the success of the October market has provided a wonderful boost as the markets embark on a new chapter, with a series of specially-themed events planned throughout the year rather than a regular monthly schedule. The next Gresford Community Market will take place between 9am and 1pm on Saturday, December 12, with a festive

Following the success of the October comeback, interest from stallholders has been so strong that the Christmas market is already at capacity for stallholders. It's a terrific vote of confidence in the market and a reflection of the enthusiasm among local makers and small businesses to be part of it. For visitors, that means a wonderful opportunity to browse a bustling collection of stalls and get a head start on Christmas shopping, with handmade gifts, unique finds and locally-produced goodies offering an alternative to the usual high-street options. Whether you're searching for a special present, looking for something a little different to put under the Christmas tree, or simply keen to soak up some festive atmosphere while supporting local businesses, the December market promises to be well worth a visit. The market will once again be held at 12 Park Street, East Gresford, between the Gresford Community Gallery and Gresford Sporting Complex, providing a welcoming setting to shop local and enjoy the community atmosphere.

Curious to know who’s calling? The free Merlin Bird ID app, developed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, is a wonderful way to discover the birds living in our region. Simply hit the 'sound' button and Merlin will start identifying the birds calling around you. You can also identify birds from photographs and learn more about them. Although this year’s citizen science project, the 'Aussie Bird Count', was held in October, there’s no need to put your binoculars away! It’s never too early to prepare for next year. Rosie and Calwyn, pictured, were excited to try the app for the first time and discover just how many different birds were calling nearby. It’s a great activity for all ages and a lovely way to encourage children and adults alike to take a closer interest in the natural world around them. Science & Ideas Hub Chair Jane Richens is also enjoying discovering more about our feathered neighbours. “I used to do the bird count with my dad, and now Merlin is giving

you spot each bird, and see how your collection grows throughout the seasons. Council resolved to seek a comprehensive progress report on the replacement of Vacy Bridge, including investigations and design work completed, funding commitments, proposed alignment, community consultation and a timetable for delivery. Council also agreed to write to the Minister for Roads and Regional Transport seeking priority for the replacement crossing, recognising the growing transport, housing, freight and emergency access needs of the Vacy–Gresford corridor. For Brig O’Johnston Bridge, Council supported its removal from the strategy’s retention list, subject to clarification of the consequences and consideration of feasible alternative conservation uses. Council sought advice on rehabilitation and maintenance costs, whether removal from the list would lead to demolition, and the feasibility of pedestrian, cycling, community or tourism uses. Council also confirmed it would not accept ownership of the bridge or responsibility for its structural maintenance and financial liabilities. Further community consultation would be sought before any final decision on demolition or alternative use. ... continued on page 17 →

• November 2026, p 17 Financial Assistance Grants – Council Submission and Government Response
Dungog Shire Council News
Council received and noted its submission to the NSW Local Government Grants Commission’s proposed Financial Assistance Grants methodology, lodged on 8 October 2026. The submission supported the proposed balanced budget approach, which compared councils’ expenditure requirements with their capacity to generate revenue, while recommending refinements to better recognise rural councils’ circumstances. Council highlighted the importance of ensuring disaster recovery and other purpose-specific grants did not make councils appear to have greater ongoing financial capacity than they actually possessed. External grants had funded approximately 85 per cent of Council’s capital works program over the previous three years. The submission also sought stronger recognition of rural infrastructure and service delivery responsibilities, validation of cost indicators and road data, and
greater transparency around modelling assumptions and supporting analysis.
Council also noted correspondence from Senator Deborah O’Neill, considered under item 13.1. The Senator advised that the Commonwealth provided the funding to states and territories, while the NSW Local Government Grants Commission advised the NSW Minister on individual council allocations.
The Mayoral Minute identified approximately $2.2 million a year in potential additional funding for Dungog Shire, equivalent to approximately $22 million over Council’s Long Term Financial Plan, that would not be realised following the decision. Council reaffirmed its support for a transparent, evidence-based formula founded on Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation. This principle recognises that councils have different costs and different capacities to raise revenue, and seeks to direct assistance according to relative financial need.
Her response outlined Commonwealth support for local government, including more than $3.6 billion nationally in Financial Assistance Grants for 2026–2027 and funding through Roads to Recovery While acknowledging legitimate concerns and other infrastructure programs. about the draft model’s assumptions, calculations and potential financial The submission preceded the Commission’s volatility, Council called for those issues to subsequent decision not to implement the be addressed through further work.
