Dungog Medical Practice is opening a clinic in Gresford, to further serve our lovely patients over there.

We will be operating out of the Vet Building – Durham Road. The clinic will be open from the week of the 6th November.

Initially Dr Leon Sykes will be working Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 2-3 pm. Dr Duncan Dew Thursday from 8.30 until 10am. The Doctors will be available for walk up patients – no bookings – or if you would prefer, bookings can be made via Dungog Clinic.

Hours and times will be adjusted depending on demand.

Mayoral Update

From Mayoral Update 23 October, 2017

Referendum and Poll Councillors passed some important resolutions at last week’s meeting of the Dungog Shire Council (18 Oct). First and foremost, we resolved to acknowledge the results of both the poll and referendum held in conjunction with the September DSC Local Government Elections. The referendum vote supported moving to a popularly elected Mayor and six Councillors, and retaining the existing three ward system. This must be implemented by Dungog Shire Council at the 2020 Local Government Elections if we remain a stand-alone Council at that point.

Senior staff have already identified some key areas that would improve the way they operate and, therefore be better able to provide service to Dungog Shire residents. We have to now find ways that we can make it happen. Nothing is off the table in this process. I will report further on this once we have had time to analyse the suggestions that come out of the day and determine the practicality and workability of these suggestions.

September Fires All the fire crews in the Shire had a busy time last month, and its only Spring.

Bendolba-Salisbury Fire Captain, Nick Helyer, reports the busiest start to the fire season in his memory, with the crew doing 24 shifts in 26 days. They attended three major fires in their area, at Underbank, Upper Chichester and Chichester Dam, as well as a smaller fire in Quartpot Creek. Many surrounding crews were also there to lend a hand.

Nick’s crew and others also assisted Dungog at the Main Creek fire.

Thanks to all our fire fighters, and other volunteers for their tremendous efforts.

And remember there is a long way to go before the fire season ends, so please spare a thought for their tireless efforts, both in September and going forward.

Out and About I spent some time last week out and about in Gresford and Vacy, meeting some business owners in these two villages. I heard about a few issues, and heard some great suggestions as well.

One common theme was about coordinating events and goings-on around the Shire and finding ways that

the three villages on the western side of the Shire (Gresford, Vacy and Paterson) and the two on the eastern side (Clarence Town and Dungog) may better relate to each other.

Community Award for their “Reflections of Resilience” campaign to acknowledge the one year anniversary of the 2015 floods. The team were received at Parliament House by Michael Johnsen.

One of the great event synergies, The Gresford Billy Cart Derby and the Dungog Rodeo has emerged over the last couple of years. I will work with Dungog Shire Events to try to find other such synergies, where the benefits of visitor numbers can be spread throughout the shire.

And well done to Eccleston’s Sarah Sivyer, recipient of the NSW Department of Primary Industry sponsored Nuffield Scholarship. I look forward to reading your research on transparent business models and biosecurity. It is vital for our future to find ways to allow the next generations of farmers to create viable businesses from the land.

I was at the Clarence Town School of Arts last Monday to meet the Boomerang Bag Ladies who make reusable shopping bags to help reduce the use of plastic ones. I also met those involved in the Community Hub and Outreach. This takes place every second Monday. I will be setting up a drop-in session, for residents who want to raise anything with me, to coincide with this. The next Community Hub session is 30 October.

I’ll be announcing drop-in sessions in other areas of the Shire shortly.

Cr Kate Murphy reports the Back to Gresford day, was well-attended and a terrific event.

by Candlelight What a fantastic effort the villages of Gresford and East Gresford produced for the 2016 Gresford Community Group’s first ever Christmas Lights Competition and our Carols by Candlelight celebration. This year we would like to include Vacy into our Christmas Lights Competition and invite everyone to the Carols by Candlelight celebration on Saturday 16 December at the Therese Doyle Hall grounds at East Gresford.

Residents taking part in the 2016 Christmas Lights Competition were delighted to see other villagers driving around, stopping and looking, and appreciating their Christmas light

display. From this feedback for the 2017 Gresford Christmas Lights Competition we have introduced a new category, People’s Choice. Additionally, by entering a nomination for the People’s Choice Award, your entry will go into the draw for $50 for having nominated the winner of People’s Choice.

Yabbie Dabbie Doo

The Yabbie Races on Saturday 14th October at the Gresford Bowls Sport & Recreation Club were a sensational hit.

Most yabbies were in fine form. Race organisers, our very own wildlife man “Dick” Hopson, and Club Secretary Annmarie Lole, were full on with their organizational skills & work load for and on the day. This maiden racing day for some very spirited yabbies certainly did not stop Annmarie and Dicks’ working day here in Gresford.

Liquid refreshments were flowing well at the bar, “Thanks” to Brittany & Annmarie.

At times other helpers had to jump in.

Meanwhile, on the racing floor the heat was on. The enthusiastic crowd was present with Race 1: being the 'Carrabolla Canta Maiden'. As the gate partition went up, some yabbies were well and truly on their way down their slippery sloped laneways. Not the case for number 2 'Road Kill'. This reluctant yabbie just turned around in his barrier and sat their motionless, needless to say Greg and I weren’t too enthused about that as he was our yabbie. Number 9 'Lucky Legs' made it first over the finish line in fine form (it must be all in the name).

Race 2: 'Wallaringa Wobble handicap 2yrs old' Excitement plus all around the racing box. Between organisation of the racing yabbies and the crowding spectators Dick, our local wildlife entrepreneur, was working flat chat. Number 4 Green Moon shone as it dropped over the finish line in first place.

Race 3: 'Salisbury Stagger Open Handicap' By now some of the yabbies were displaying aggressive tendencies.

The many little racing punters just loved it. The atmosphere was hyper-tense as number 9 'Lostock Legend' lived up to its name and came in first.

Race 4: 'Gresford Cup' the Calcutta.

Before this big race legendary race callers and auctioneers Mr Keith Litchfield and Mr Trevor Clements auctioned off the lucky contenders. Good money exchanged hands.

An unknown contender 'Random' was brought in for 'Yabbie Dick', who was purchased in the Calcutta by Scott Shearer for top dollar of the day. The strong contenders of the racing yabbies were off and crawling number 4 'Green Moon' blitzed it for owner 'Olli' in first place, number 1 'Lucky Legs' came in second for

Winners of the Fashions of the Field were Sharon Latter, who received a bottle of champagne, and Cameron Latter with his large Stetson won a 6 pack of beer. Thank you to everyone who came dressed in the Keith Litchfield and Trevor spirit of the race it was lovely to see.

Another treat for the crowd was having “BBQ’d Yabbie” for the not so lucky race runners and their friends, cooked by Justin Thornton and Dick Hopson and served on a tasty salad for everyone to enjoy. A tasty morsel it was.

A great afternoon for racing spectators and punters (maybe not so much for the yabbies ending up on the BBQ) and for our local club. A “Big Thank you” to Annmarie and Dick for organising the day, Keith and Trevor for race calling and a great job on the Calcutta auction.

The band “Whistle Dixie” played into the night to finish a great day.

It’s been a tough year keeping the young trees and shrubs alive. We did so with the help of so many locals who were prepared to water and mulch throughout the horrendous summer. I think now, thanks to David Horn and others that the new watering system will kick in when it’s needed.

As Penny Kater mentioned in her opening speech, in years to come, our community will be able to wander through the arboretum, see a shrub or tree that they like and plant one in their own garden, just as we used to do. Over the decades, the ‘grass has become greener on the other side of the fence’, and European and Asian species have dominated our landscapes.

No introduced species will attract birdlife and animals as our own natives do. The arboretum exists because of the generosity of the Gresford and District Community Group, NSW Government of Environment and Heritage, Gresford District Landcare and Riverdene Nursery and countless caring citizens including Alan Horn and Steve Wright.

Denim & Diamonds – P&C Fundraising Ball

Community, generosity, friendship and fun are all alive and well in Gresford with more than 90 people turning out to support Gresford Public School at the Denim & Diamonds Ball on October 21.

The ball, hosted by Gresford Public School P&C Association at the Gresford School of Arts hall, raised more than $11,000 which will be used to support educational programs as well as install rubberised softfall in one of the school playgrounds.

P&C president Angela Kelehear said she was again amazed by the support shown for the school and its 73 students.

“It all added up to ensure the night was an absolute success.”

The Denim & Diamonds ball included live entertainment from talented acoustic duo Daniel Cherry and Tommy D, and GAPS singers Lyndell Osmond and Paul Wilson, as well as a set from DJ Nathan Wall who is a product of Gresford Public School.

There were also plenty of chances to come away with some booty through the Diamond Heist coin toss, Pick Pockets lucky dip, raffle, lucky door prizes and silent auction.

“Year after year this community opens its heart to ensure the children at our little school are given every opportunity,” she said. “And, as always, every cent of that generosity will go into the school to support the learning needs of these children, who are the future of our community." ”The P&C thanks everyone who supported this event – whether it be through the purchase of a single raffle ticket, attendance on the night or the donation of items for the silent auction.

Culture Vulture Hobbs have opened Dungog Contemporary Gallery in the renovated J A Rose building. Their gallery specialises in modern art.

‘There Be Unicorns Out There’ Dungog, an idyllic village nestled in an Arcadian valley at the foot of the great Barrington National Park, surely no better place to find the fabled unicorn?

A group of artisans under the banner of Dungog Artisans is staging its first exhibition to explore this intriguing question through differing representations of the local environment.

Gresford Public School students and teacher Mrs Sue Dillan step back in time.

Mother Nature provided a great draw card, a beautiful fresh sunny day for our first Back to Gresford day on Sunday 22nd October.

I can honestly state ‘what a great day occurred overall for our fist celebrative event’. Held in the museum grounds of the Gresford District Historical Society Inc, at least 400 people came along.

Many older faces did come back to visit us. There were all ages and that in itself was terrific. Outside visitors were there and personally the Historical Society would just like to say a Big Thank You to all. All we ask in return is that everyone just keeps in mind another similar Back to Gresford event day should be occurring throughout 2018. Continue to pass the word on and round up relatives,

friends and co-workers including those who have dispersed themselves throughout Australia and afar.

The Gresford District Historical Society is very appreciative to all those people that helped to make the day special. This includes Mr Graham Murphy (President of the Gresford Community Group), Louise and Noel Brown with their beautiful big

community work by running the chocolate wheel with local helpers.

Gresford Tennis Club provided their famous cooking treats and had a wow of a day. Towards the end of the day I threw a little Pumpkin Bowling. Nice little hard dry pumpkins courtesy of Karen and Ken Turnbull. The first winner who impressively hit the far away stick was Nina Maroulis, second was Lucas Hill, third and fourth Jack Hill. All winners got to take their winning pumpkins home. A word of advice, this activity may take off.

Back to Gresford was a great day. Please keep it in mind for next year. Helpers are always needed for any special event but unfortunately there is never enough.

Some small time out of anyone's time would be well appreciated. Help keep our community groups going and certainly any local events that comes our way.

Remembrance Day 2017

What’s on the Shelves?

This year the Gresford Sub Branch of the RSL will be conducting their Remembrance Day service on Saturday 11th November at 10:30am at the Cenotaph in front of the School of Arts.

The Good People Hannah Kent Like Burial Rites, Hannah Kent’s first novel, this one is based on an historical event with a bleak ending. The good people of the title are supernatural entities (known as fairies in the older and darker sense of the word) who need to be placated or circumvented. The central characters are three women who try to come to terms with an ill or disabled child, who is suspected of being a changeling – a fairy child substituted for a healthy human boy.

Nora, the child’s grandmother, is guided by Nance, the village healer, and aided by Mary, her servant, to banish the changeling and restore the human child. Much of this novel is disturbing to read, but it powerfully evokes a distant time and place (19th century Ireland) which explains much of what happened in both the past and present. The people are very poor, going barefoot in the freezing mud of winter, and subsisting on potatoes while they produce eggs and cheese to pay their rent. While superstition reigns, there is also goodness and common sense, and wisdom in using the benefits of nature. Benevolence, grief, self-interest and superstition battle it out over the course of the novel.

They are put on a separate shelf in the library so they are easy to find plus the reviews are in a folder.

At the conclusion of the service everyone is invited to enjoy morning tea provided by the Ladies Auxilliary & the RSL Sub Branch.

RSL Xmas Party The RSL will be holding their Xmas Party this year on Friday 1st December at the Bowling Club beginning at 7pm.

All members of the public are invited to attend at a cost of $30 per head.

The Epic Cattle Drive Friday morning 13th October 2017 at the crack of dawn, the day broke and it was all action.

Enjoying a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs, tea, coffee and fruit juice prepared by “ The Boy from Coonamble and former South Sydney Grade Rugby League player, culinary maestro, Mick Ecob, ensured the stockmen were ready to do justice to the pending horse ride on a full tummy. The Master of the Horse, Brad Brooker, had assembled the finest stockmen and stockwomen in the district to “Hit em up and move em out” the prime steers and heifers from G. B. Jones’ “Trevallyn” East Gresford on the arduous “Cattle Drive” to Josh and Penny Evans’ “Riverside” Vacy.

It was the start of the long and dusty ride in the saddle for these hardened horsemen gathered from all walks of life and no better education could those students from Vacy and Gresford Schools be given. In fact it could be said that they were attending their first day at the “University of Hard Knocks and Bumps”, what an education !!

Lucia Merchant and Pippa Merchant who were riding confidently together with Stasie Wells who cut a fine figure riding tall in the saddle. Professional horse groom, Karla Brown, displayed assertive control over the cattle. What can you say about “Team Holz” led to the fray by the Patriarch, Mick Holz with his saddle bags full of nourishment and daughters Emily and Brooke who are long time supporters of the ride offering encouragement to the younger riders.

Who said you can’t do two things at once, The Hemp King, Bob Doyle proved them wrong he can ride a horse and talk on a mobile phone at the same time as well as catch any lose horse which may have gotten away, and he may have been chewing gum as well, now that is class !

Courtney Gould and her mate Tamicka Lupinski rode to the front and showed the way exhibiting equestrian prowess in a serene and suave manner. With her new saddle from last year Jillian Brooker was encouraged by her children Charlotte and Will who enthused confidence especially when cattle broke from the mob and Charlotte took chase , riding over the neck of her horse in full flight to turn the beasts around and

Britany Crouch displaying sanguine affirmative characteristic horsemanship held the cattle in tight formation. Local identity, Luke Booth and his son Darcy Booth, were a pleasure to see riding together, keeping the cattle tight and on the move. The best ”hair do” on the day goes to Michelle Wilton, the Glendonbook Hairdresser and her husband Adam who were both in the mix especially when the cattle were on the move after morning tea.

Kristen Robinson displayed experienced horsemanship, riding on the wing, keeping the ride tight. A couple of the younger riders Imogen Robertson and Dakota Robertson were riding well above their years, demonstrating team work, focused on the job ahead and executing it with style.

Local Pony Club President , Grant Eldridge, was accompanied by “Crew Eldridge” made up of Bailey Eldridge who has to be one of the most improved riders exhibiting a cavalier prowess in horsemanship and not to be outdone Tiahnee Eldridge showed who was the boss with her in the saddle maintain full
