ll the glitz, glamour and gaudiness of the fabulous Las Vegas invaded the School of Arts hall on October 17 as Gresford Public School’s P&C hosted its major What happens in Vegas … fundraising ball.

Elvis was in the building, the Chapel of Love photobooth did a roaring trade, poker chips were flying, the auctioneer’s hammer was crashing down and the signature Pink Flamingo cocktails – complete with flashing glasses - were in hot demand. And the result of all this frivolity … an

incredible $7500 raised for educational programs and equipment for the 79 students of Gresford Public School.

The P&C would like to thank every single person who played a part in making the ball such a huge success.

For those who supported the event by buying/selling raffle tickets, donating items, decorating the venue, catering, working on the bar and in the kitchen, attending on the night, getting into the spirit of the event and bidding at auction, know that your efforts have contributed to making a great school even greater.

TO MERGE OR NOT TO MERGE Its on again so have your say Yes it's on again. A report released on 20 October 2015 by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) has put a merger back on the table for Dungog Council. But Dungog is not alone. Only 52 out of 144 councils were found to be 'fit' under the Fit for the Future criteria established by the State Government.

In February this year the Gresford News provided a 2 page review of the history of the 'Fit for the Future' process and the deliberations of Dungog Council. You can read that article here: http://issuu.com/ gresford-news/docs/gn-feb-2015-web At that time, Dungog Council had initiated discussions with Singleton, Gloucester and Port Stephens councils, and none were interested in a merger.

Maitland and Dungog councils then jointly commissioned consultants Morrison Low to look at a merger business case in order to assess the advantages and disadvantages of a merger. On the basis of that report both Councils decided that a merger would not be a preferred option.

Dungog has since prepared and submitted a 'stand alone' proposal that went to the IPART assessment. Now IPART has found that proposal still 'NOT FIT' the council

has until 18 November (less than one month from the release date) to review and respond to IPART's assessment.

An extroadinary meeting of Dungog Council on 27 October resolved that: 1. The Mayor and General Manager conduct further discussions regarding the IPART report determination and the NSW Government’s current position on Local Government reform.

2. An information newsletter/update on the Fit for the Future process to date be prepared and mailedout to all ratepayers.

3. Council conduct four (4) community “drop-in” sessions throughout the Shire following the mail out.

4. Council finalise its response at an Extra Ordinary Council Meeting once the above has been completed and prior to the closing date of 18 November 2015.

After 18 November the NSW Government will consider responses from councils, decide on its next steps and inform councils and the community of its decision by the end of 2015.

Now is the time to get some answers and have your say. You can do this by

dropping into any of the following locations between 4pm and 8pm where councillors will be available to answer questions and listen to community views on the IPART determination and the Fit for the Future program: • Thurs 5 Nov, Dungog Council Chambers • Mon 9 Nov, Paterson School of Arts • Tues 10 Nov, Clarence Town Community Centre • Wednesday 11 November, Gresford School of Arts, 4-8pm Written feedback will be received up to Friday 13 November and can be emailed to Council via shirecouncil@dungog.nsw. gov.au or handed to council staff at the Administration centre or discussed with your elected Council representatives.

Getting to know the locals... by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries ELAEODENDRON AUSTRALE var AUSTRALE – Red Olive-berry, Red Olive Plum (Formerly Cassine australis) The name Elaeodendron is derived from the Greek word Elata which means Olive, Dendron which means Tree. The word Australe is derived from the Latin word Australis which means Southern.

The Elaeodendron is a small tree up to 8m tall and is very decorative when grown in the open. Although they can be ungainly teenagers, patience is rewarded by very nice mature trees. The female trees are very attractive in flower and in fruit.

This species is fairly common in remnant dry rainforests and grows from Tuross Head on the NSW South Coast to Windsor Tablelands in Queensland. In the Hunter, it has been recorded from Belmont, Scone, Murrurundi, Cedar Brush, the Allyn & Williams Rivers, Red Olive Berry fruiting at Tabbil Forest. What’s on the Shelves?

The Collected Stories Jean Stafford Jean Stafford was an American writer of the mid-twentieth century, whose background was in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and this influence can be seen in many of her stories.

Most of her protagonists are female, and the subject matter is often the stifling effect of small frontier towns, but there are also stories from a collection called Manhattan Island that feature life in New York. Many of the stories deal with the stratification created by wealth in American society, and there are also deeply personal stories that reflect Stafford’s own experiences, such as a painful time in hospital after a car accident.

This is a book for readers interested in subtle, elaborate writing and the depths of human experience, but it also has flashes of humour, especially when the narrative viewpoint is from a child called Emily Vanderpool, who gets into difficult situations because she tends to be at odds with the rest of society. Emily gets caught up with a shoplifter in one story and a boot-legging evangelist in another, emerging wiser in each story. The last story in the selection is the poignant account of a woman who is extraordinarily beautiful, and who devotes and ultimately sacrifices her life in the maintenance of that beauty – a tale that shows the cost of a widely valued attribute.

The Paterson New Year’s Eve Festival has a new organising committee, operating under the banner of the Rotary Club of Paterson, and made up of Rotary members and others from the local community. Committee co-ordinator, Adele Mitchell, said of the previous organisers, “Kevin and Moira Hawtin of the CBC Café Paterson did an amazing job for many years, and they deserve a break. We want to build on their good work and ensure the continuation of the Paterson New Year’s Eve Festival as a wonderful community event for the whole family.”

Held annually at Tucker Park, Paterson on New Year’s Eve, there will again be lots of fun activities for the kids, great entertainment from a live band, and two fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight.

“We are seeking sponsors this year to help cover the expense of staging the event, and so we can keep the entry fee for families affordable. There are different sponsorship levels available – for large companies through to small local businesses. We also want to give money back to the community, so we are talking to local schools and community groups and asking them to submit proposals for funding. We want this to be an event where all the community can get involved.” Volunteers will also be needed to help with the set up and during the festival.

These stories take you into a particular time and place, but also deal with wider issues. Any reader who picks this up and stays with it will have a long and absorbing reading experience.

Proposed Development Project: Gresford School of Arts hope to cover some ancillary costs such as refurbishment of adjacent concrete paths and re-alignment of some safety fencing.

In a collaborative and jointly funded project, the Gresford School of Arts Management Committee and the Gresford Amateur Performance Society [GAPS] are lodging a Development Application with Dungog Shire Council.

The proposed project is to replace existing unsafe steel steps with a covered, suspended concrete deck and disability access ramp.

This will provide more suitable access to the stage area at the eastern end of the building. The deck will provide an all-weather marshalling space and assembly point for persons wishing to access either side of the stage during an event.

As with most projects, funding is an immediate challenge. The project partners have access to a little more than $25,000. We have applied to the Federal Government for a ‘dollar-for-dollar’ grant of $20,000.

The works will utilize approximately 3,500-4,000 bricks, so in the modern spirit of the crowd funding phenomenon, we invite the community at large to participate in this project by adopting a brick. Please consider adopting or sponsoring a brick, or better still, multiple bricks for the meagre sum of just $2 per brick.

All monies contributed, will be specifically committed to the successful completion of this worthwhile, albeit overdue, community project.

Gresford CWA News Vacy artist Christine Pike takes CWA to the Archibald Prize When looking for inspiration for the entry into the 2014 Archibald Prize, local Vacy artist Christine Pike went no further than the NSW Country Women’s Association of which she has been a member for a number of years.

President Tanya Cameron is a role model to many rural women highly-regarded for her leadership and vision for the CWA. The fact she lived in the same country town of Rowena as Christine’s daughter made for the perfect opportunity to become the subject of her entry. But not all went to plan when it came to the “sitting process” when beginning the artwork.

“I wanted to paint Tanya at the front gate to her property but a huge dust storm came through so we had to relocate to the air-conditioned pub!”

Christina said.

“Further sittings were done in the shearer’s quarters – it was challenging but I was happy with the result.”

Although the highly-acclaimed work was not accepted into the final paintings hung at the Archibald Prize it was displayed at the Ewart Gallery in Sydney’s north – a feat in itself.

Christine, born in Kurri Kurri, studied computing at Newcastle University before turning her hand to art fulltime 10 years ago. She is an associate member of the Royal Art Society of NSW. She works from her home studio in Vacy and is a regular entrant in local art exhibition and competitions. Her first exhibition was held at “Crazy Chairs” in Dungog.

Ingredients

375 zucchini 1 large onion 3 rashers bacon 1 cup grated cheese 1 cup self-raising flour ½ cup oil 5 eggs lightly beaten Salt, pepper

Method: Pre-heat oven. Grate unpeeled zucchini coarsely, finely chop onion and bacon.

The gates opened at 10.30am and the crowd was already waiting to see the massive line-up up of both Australian and International musicians.

A huge crowd of people flowed through the gates to enjoy what is fast becoming one of the Hunter Valley’s premium events.

Diesel hit the stage just after 9pm and showed what a true professional he is. He had the entire crowd on their feet singing and dancing to his well-known tunes.

Culture Vulture features an interview with Kathryn Wittman, talking about Dungog By Design, artisan collective shop and gallery situated at 224 Dowling St, Dungog. Hours 10am–4pm Wed–Mon. Dungog by Design members have a vast diversity of background – what links us is our current residence in the Dungog area and our need to make. Some members have worked as artists all their lives, some have studied, some have finally listened to the call to make things with their hands and have started late in life. We’re attracted by beauty, by weirdness, by the functional and wearable and by the tactile: it’s a treat for the senses to enter our shop and be inspired by what we can make. We love that we can bring ‘the world of Art’ to our small country town and be inspired by each other.

What inspired you to open an art gallery/shop? When Dungog by Design first met in April 2014, with nine members all heads full of dreams and possibilities, one of our first goals – and we thought it would be years and years off – was to open a gallery shop in the township of Dungog. We have been inspired by artisan’s collectives in our travels – as close by as Stroud and as far away as Scotland – and by gallery visits. Our secret motivation is to share our wares with the world, one small town at a time, starting with Dungog.

What style/type of exhibitions or merchandise do you have available for sale? With 26 members, Dungog by Design has a wide range of handmade items available for sale in our Dowling Street shop. We have ceramic wares, stitched, dyed and upcycled clothing, jewellery, handmade books, paintings, prints, hanging work, timber furniture, quirky hats, vibrant fabrics, wrought iron objects, knitted clothing, functional and decorative gifts, felted work, machine-knitted whimsy, cards and bookmarks and locally made soaps. Our individual members’ range evolves with our exploration of materials and each item is unique.

he early development of Government schools faced stiff opposition from religious leaders who objected to the idea of education being secular, free and compulsory and it was not till 1866 that a newly formed Government was strong enough to overcome this opposition and pass the Public Schools Act.

Some of the buildings still remain in private hands but anyone travelling past who was not part of (or aware) of their history would have no idea of the significant role they once played.

Upper Allyn School (1939-1970) In 1938, concerned parents applied for Government aid to commence a school.

Because of the low numbers the only alternative was a subsidized school. A building was found and this was most likely the same building which had previously been used as the Brookshell school further south. This school had operated from 1908 till 1914 and had been known as Shellbrook until 1913.

Another short lived Upper Allyn school had been at “Wortwell” (now Marilla Park) between 1883 and 1892. This school had been operated as a half time school with Carrabolla between 1885 and 1892.

Upper Allyn commenced in 1939 as a subsidized school with Joan Crittenden as teacher. In 1940 Hazel Bowditch, (later

The Rev Adams stated in the application that "- I am very anxious that these schools should be opened again as the children are growing up in perfect ignorance at the heads of the rivers".

After necessary repairs the school/church and residence re-opened in Nov 1867 as a public school with George Hill, the first teacher. He was despatched to attend Singleton school during October to learn as much as possible about teaching. An outbreak of typhus later contributed to low enrolments and the Upper Allyn subsidised school - early 1940s. L-R Back: Sylvia Hancock (teacher). Mrs. Hazel Hancock) was appointed teacher and she stayed till 1941 before leaving to attend Teachers' College. Sylvia Hancock on her return from High School stepped in to the role of teacher when no one else was available.

Towards the end of WW2, Pender and Foster established a large sawmill and the influx of workers and their families increased enrolments. The school achieved provisional status from 1949 in a new building south of the sawmill with Ross Monnox as teacher. By 1957 enrolments had further increased and the school achieved full public school status. Cecil Morton (1951-1957) and Bob Godwin (1958-1963) were the longest serving teachers, their stays coinciding with a period of some stability in the timber industry. When the sawmill closed at the end of 1970 enrolments dropped dramatically and the school was closed.

The last teacher was Mrs. Marlene Browne, wife of the then Eccleston teacher.

Eccleston School (1853-1986)

In 1853 Hugh Massie gave 2 acres of land to the Church of England for the purpose of a church and school building at Eccleston. From 1853 a school was

Eccleston school closed in December 1986.

The teacher with the longest service at Eccleston was Mrs. Emma Hill (wife of George Hill the 1st teacher). When George Hill died Emma returned to live with her family (Hopson). She commenced duty in

His was a very popular appointment and he remained for 6 years before being transferred. Edgar was a skilled photographer and his photos of the Allyn river area and of Halton school are now collectables. The last teacher before Halton school after refurbishment 1927 Halton was finally closed was William 1880 and remained for 25 years till 1905.

Aspinall (Feb 1948–Jan 1950).

Halton School/Ballington (1876-1949) Allynbrook School (1869-1971) Ballington school opened in Oct 1876 as a provisional school and took its name from one of William White's properties.

Its first teacher was a Miss Susan Glynnsoon to become Mrs. Susan White.

Allynbrook's first school opened on 1/2/1869 with provisional status and moved to full public school status in Sept 1879. Until Dec 1908 the school went under the name of "Caergwrle", as it was on the property of William Boydell.

with Miss Alice Harpley in charge. She remained till 1917 when she left to marry Mr. Jack Wells. Binglebrah school continued, moving back to provisional status in 1922, but was eventually closed for good in 1933. The last teacher was a John McGuigan who was appointed in Sept 1931.

As far as is known the school was located on Parks Creek Rd. Does anyone have more information or a photograph?

Lewinsbrook School (1918-1964) The first Lewinsbrook school was established in 1852 on Alexander Park's property. However it was somewhat short-lived and closed in 1854.

In 1917 residents in the area proposed a school and a subsidized school began in 1918 on land resumed from Mr C. Osmond. Evelyn Godwin, (ex Halton school) was the first teacher. This school remained open till 1932.

By 1945 enrolments had improved such that the school could be reopened as a provisional school and it became a public school in 1957. All provisional schools were upgraded to public status at this time.

Beatty family descendants celebrate 150 years at Gresford Market Day A showery morning certainly did not put a damper on this ‘Celebrative’ event, in recognition of 150 years of one family being our local hoteliers. Today's family members are proud of this achievement and so is the community.

Sunday 18th October began with a local musician, Dean Dee, with guitar in hand playing relaxing music that drifted out across the deck and market area. 17 stall holders were present and this included 1 new stall selling beautiful hand made paper flowers.

The mornings movement of visiting people was slowish but the response to visiting our local hotel (built 1901) as the day moved on was really pleasing. An overview of the origins of the Beatty family in Northern Ireland, their immigration to New South Wales and the next generations progression into our area and the hotel business was on display. Accompanying the information were photos and memorabilia. Thank you to Stewart Everett for items of display. Stewart also won the GDHSI raffle - a raised garden bed and compost. Gail Wilson won second prize - a bucket of garden goods.

Visitors to the old Victoria dining and ball room viewed the many wonderful flowers entered into the flower competition and for display purposes. A vision splendid. Greenery arrangements such as grapes, vine leaves and wild tobacco represented local produce from the early decades in our local district. (Thanks to Di and Dave Hilliard) Flowers were judged

Beatty Family 1865-2015 The descendants of John and Mary Beatty of the Halfway House, Vacy 1865 would like to thank everyone who came to help us celebrate our family’s 150 years of service in the local area.

A special thanks must go to Lorraine Ashard and the Gresford Historical Society, who did a fantastic job putting a display together of our ancestry. The research they did has given us a great platform to further our knowledge of our f amily’s history.

Jenny Wilson’s input was also invaluable, working back through the generations to 18th century Ireland and Scotland. All of this work helped to make this a special day for us, and hopefully a milestone in Gresford’s long history.

New team at the Gresford Community Group There’s been a changing of the guard at the Gresford Community Group. Newly elect President Graham Murphy, told members at the 2015 Annual General Meeting the new team is aiming to help make Gresford a better place to live and would rely on community consultation and support for this to be achieved.

The new committee elected at the AGM held at the Beatty Hotel on 12 October is: President: Graham Murphy Vice President: Noel Brown Secretary: Liz Jones Treasurer: Peter Smith Graham thanked Martin Addison for guiding the Gresford Community Group for the last five years and he looked forward to an exciting and productive 2016. In his appreciation of Martin, Graham told the meeting that the last 12 months had been very trying and Martin had maintained a steady and calming influence to bring a few controversial projects to a satisfactory conclusion.

The Gresford Community Group are looking forward to the year ahead, with the first projects on the agenda being the Remembrance Day Service and the

Australian Day Luncheon.

As the hall is the GCG’s main asset, this leasing will result in an increase in rent and the cost of maintenance taken over by the Gresford Historical Society.

Martin recommended the following areas be reviewed and followed up: • Seek the views of East Gresford residents on the beautification program and determine if new owners would be interested in adding a tree to their frontage. It had not been an expensive exercise, and thanks must go to Penny Kater, Carolyn Addison, Jane and Ken Chandler as the driving force behind this successful program.

• Follow up on the need for a pedestrian crossing outside the IGA, push for more local police involvement and the

cleaning up of the recreational areas of the lower Barringtons.

• It was noted in the minutes of a recent Dungog Shire Council meeting that the $400K allocated for improvements to the area had been deleted, Martin suggested the new President request local council member, Robert Booth be invited to attend next meeting and explain council’s decision on this important issue.

Treasurer: Peter Smith Peter tabled the Treasurer’s report and noted that the Gresford News was the highest income earner for the Gresford Community Group and again had returned a profit. The Therese Doyle Hall was again the main expenditure item and the depreciation of the Xerox printing machine had affected the ‘bottom line’.

Graham Murphy thanked Penny for conducting the election of officers and also thanked Martin for his great contribution to the GCG for the last 5 years and congratulated him on his achievements.

Vacy Village Country Carnival On Sunday September 20, whilst the rest of the Valley received much needed rain the sun shone on the Village of Vacy as thousands arrived to enjoy the community spirit of the town’s annual Country Carnival.

The biggest attraction was the dog races with oodles of Mini Poodles, Jack Russels, Dauschounds and any dog willing to squeeze in the starting box, fighting it out to be in the finals for the inaugural Vacy Cup. Congratulations to the winner, Jack Russel Lola, owned by Melissa James.

Although the inclement weather kept away some stall holders the crowds enjoyed the variety of wares and food that were on offer with many stall holders saying they had a bigger day’s trade than average with some even having to restock midway through the day.

Mackies Camp Oven celebrated 10 years of cookery with Greg, Lorraine and the team serving up a record 35 legs worth of delicious lamb sandwiches.

This year saw Vacy Public school build a hay bale maze that challenged kids young and old. There was plenty for the motoring enthusiast with vehicles from Dungog Historic Motor Club, the British Car Club and Rattlin’ Bones & Engine Groan Tractors braving the weather to be on display.

All day the crowds enjoyed a huge line up of live entertainment from Vacy Public School, chilled out to tunes by guitarist Steve Stenson, nodded their heads to Big Bam Boom Drummers and were movin’ and groovin’ to Jumpin Jukebox.

The Vacy Village community atmosphere really shone on the day with the committee announcing the day a resounding success. The committee acknowledges such a day would not be possible without so much support.
