his year’s Gresford Billy Cart Derby was a major hit with a record crowd enjoying all the excitement and the great Easter Saturday weather. The competitors came from far and wide, and the range of billy carts and the amount of work and design on show exceeded all expectations. The Mitre 10 Easter Bunny was a crowd pleaser with plenty of chocolate eggs to give out when she wasn't competing in her own egg shape billy cart! Local community groups who had stalls were well supported and many visitors stayed for the weekend at the camping ground.

Community Dinner at Hotel Beatty

The inaugural community table at the Hotel Beatty saw more than twenty five people sit down to dinner to enjoy one another’s company. Thank you to all those who were able to come. It was great to see the Smith family come to celebrate their daughter’s 17th birthday as they were regular Friday night visitors for many years.

Next monthly dinner will be on Friday 13 May and there will be two specials @ $18 or choose from the menu. It would be a good idea to ring the hotel on 4938 9451 and book so the chef has an idea on numbers. We thought that tables of 6 may be better than one long table this time so if you have friends who are new to the area and would like to come, please bring them along.

CHILLI CHICKEN TARTLETS Ingredients: 1 teaspoon light olive oil 3 sheets frozen ready rolled shortcrust pastry 1 cup (160g) chopped cooked chicken 3 spring onions 1/2 cup (120g) spreadable extra light cream cheese 1/3 cup (90g) kraft deli spread, chilli & capsicum

Method: Pre-heat oven to 190 degreesC or 170 fan forced. Lightly brush two 12 hole patty pans with oil. Cut 24 x 7cm rounds from pastry and press into prepared pans. Prick each pastry disc several times with a fork. Bake for 15 mins until lightly browned and cooked through. Cool on wire rack. Makes 24.

Combine chicken, cream cheese, three quarters of spring onion and 1 tabl. spoon of deli spread in a bowl. Fill cooled tart cases wIth chicken mixture and a small spoonful of remaining deli spread. Top with remaining spring onion and serve on a platter.

Gresford CWA News April turned out to be a very busy month culminating with a visit from Tanya Cameron, President of N.S.W. CWA. The rooms looked very good, lawns mowed, edges snipped and a bright sunny day saw thirty ladies, members and guests from the Hunter region visiting us for morning tea.

A meet and greet session was followed by Tanya presenting 50 year membership awards to Elaine Mayo and Jan Godwin (who was unfortunately in hospital) and a certificate of appreciation to Verna Wells.

Many questions were asked about the future of CWA and the plans to foster all new ideas from State Office. Tanya then went to Dungog and met with Community leaders as it is one year since the big flood.

This is a highly romanticised novel, with a wonder horse which evades all efforts by the Comanche to steal it; a wolf which makes the running in the friendship with the lone man and a love affair between two relative outsiders to the Comanche, but it is a satisfying story of choosing a new destiny.

There are lots of anthropological and historical details to entertain and inform an interested reader, and the narrative pace is excellent.

Wild Dog Control Association Honours History Over 50 years ago a group of concerned and like minded graziers formed a wild dog association from those living at the head of the Allyn, Williams and Paterson rivers. As a result of their efforts the numbers of wild dogs has largely decreased over time.

Local Walks Celebrate Heritage Week

By Ivan Skaines, Dungog Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Co-ordinator On Sunday 24 April there were walks held at Blue Gum Loop in the Upper Williams and Peach Tree Park in the Upper Allyn to coincide with Australian Heritage Week and the National Trust 2016 Heritage Festival The day was a partnership between Dungog Shire Council, the Forestry Corporation of NSW and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. Participants included locals and also visitors to the area from Maitland and Newcastle.

The idea to stage the day came from Martin Faulding from Callicoma Hill at Carrowbrook north of Singleton, who has produced a brochure and map titled “20 Great Hunter Region Walks” which includes Blue Gum Loop.

The morning walk at Blue Gum Loop was led by our local National Parks and Wildlife Volunteer Guides and because of the recent rain in the area, the cascades of the Williams River were spectacular.

The afternoon featured a walk at Peach Tree in the Upper Allyn past magnificent strangler figs. Mike Hill from the Forestry Corporation of NSW provided commentary about recent improvements to the track with the assistance of Conservation Volunteers Australia and plans for upgrading the area. A highlight of the day was a talk

given by Dr Cameron Archer former Principal Tocal College, Paterson about the cultural and natural history of t he Barrington Tops, and Williams, Paterson and Allyn River valleys.

ANZAC DAY at Paterson and Gresford

Anzac Day 2016 commenced with the Gresford RSL Sub Branch Dawn Service at the Paterson Cenotaph.

Veterans marched from Stockers & Partridges to the Paterson Cenotaph accompanied by pupils from Paterson Public School and many locals marching in honour of their deceased relatives.

The Dawn Service was very well attended this year with numbers equalling the record 2015 attendance. The support from many locals in preparing the Paterson Cenotaph for the event was acknowledged including Paterson Rotary and local electrician Garry Clements.

Anzac Day at Gresford began with the Veterans March commencing at Everett’s Garage proceeding to the Gresford Cenotaph for the Commemoration Service.

The march was well supported by service personnel from the RAAF and RAN, followed by the local veterans and many

locals marching in honour of their deceased relatives. Again pupils from Gresford Public School and Vacy Public School marched with the veterans and assisted with the commemoration service with special readings from the school children.

Edwards and Sally Hunt for singing and accompaniment of the Hymns and Anthems. The Bugler, Janelle Riggs again presented a pitch perfect performance.

The Pipers, Tom Thorvaldson at Paterson and Ingrid Beasley at Gresford very ably led the veterans’ marches.

Martin’s Creek Public School was very ably represented by student George Allingham. Attendance was equal to the previous year and the service was equally well received by the many locals attending.

The local Rural Fire Brigade and local Police again assisted by managing the march route.

The Reverend Steve Owens delivered the Benediction at both locations.

The Gresford RSL Sub Branch based this year’s service on the very successful 2015 format and invited many of the supporting personnel to again add to the quality of the commemoration service. Gresford RSL expressed their appreciation to Megan

This year’s Gresford Billy Cart Derby was a major hit with a record crowd enjoying all the excitement and the great Easter Saturday weather. The competitors came from far and wide, and the range of billy carts and the amount of work and design on show exceeded all expectations.

Some of the standout entries included a blast from the past Holden Torana, the aerodynamic and very quick Rivo Rocket (Red Bull eat your heart out!), the Mitre 10 Easter egg, the police car (including flashing lights) and of course the mini Blue Tractor.

The final charge down Park Street between the winner of the junior section, Mattie Smith and Jason Rampling (Senior) brought an exciting conclusion to a very successful day.

The Mitre 10 Easter Bunny competed in her own egg shape billy cart and was a huge success with the crowd – especially the chocolate eggs. ‘Gresford Beautification’ are working hard in organising the next round of planting of the Crepe Myrtles around our lovely village. The team has recommended the continued use of the Lagerstroemia “Sioux” (Crepe Myrtle) as they require little maintenance and water. They are a small deciduous tree with vibrant pink flowers throughout the hot summer months, as was seen during our recent hot spell. Watch out for further information around the village and in the Gresford News.

The figure, which seems to have made a recent comeback in popularity, fits easily in all styles and modes of expressionclassical to post- modern, realism to abstraction and pop. Getting to know the locals... by Noel Jupp OAM, Dip Hort, QP Dept Ag & Fisheries Weeping Lilly Pilly The Genus WATERHOUSIA or Weeping Lilly Pilly has gone through an identity crisis for a number of years. It first started out as Eugenia ventenatii but then changed to Waterhousia florabunda and now it has been renamed SYZYGIUM FLORABUNDUM. Common names include Weeping Myrtle, Weeping Eugenia, Weeping Lilly Pilly and Weeping Satin Ash. This species occurs naturally from the Williams River in the Lower Hunter Valley northwards to Mackay in QLD. It is common on nearly every major stream on the NSW coast.

There is very little variation in the plants regardless of their location. They usually grow in dense stands on riverbanks but are seen at their best when they are widely separated.

They are a densely foliaged tree with a wide spreading and strongly weeping crown. They can be a bit overpowering for an urban backyard but are an elegant addition to the larger rural block or to riparian situations. At Riverdene we have developed a compact densely foliaged form which also has finer leaves that is suitable for the urban backyard or as a smaller specimen on a rural block and is a great windbreak tree.

The

Museum and information centre for East Gresford The township of Gresford (once a part of James Boydell's Camyr Allyn Estate) can now proudly announce that it has its very own local historical museum.

Located in the Therese Doyle Community Hall and grounds. It is situated at the southern end of Park Street on the Gresford Road leading into East Gresford, right next to the sporting oval.

The Gresford District Historical Society Museum is in its early stage of development. A good selection of collected items from past years has been put on display. Thanks to a good collaborative effort by proactive GDHSI members, the museum doors were open Easter Saturday 26th March – Billy Cart Derby day. A very good response occurred with many visitors dropping in for more than just a bo-peep. The visitors book obtained many complimentary remarks.

On behalf of our society 'A big thank you' is extended forth.

Sunday 12th June, we welcome all visitors locally and afar to our official opening day. More interesting items will be present on view on that day. Other activities will compliment the days proceedings. Further information regarding this day will be circulated ASAP.

GDHSI members are also planning a 'Back to the Allyn River valley' Reunion for residents and ex-residents on Saturday 3rd September. The venue is yet to be confirmed. Please keep this in mind and feel free to contact President George Sale, Delma Lawrence, Lorraine Ashard and Mr Allan Hancock.

Lastly a reminder to all. The GDHSI Gresford Community Market Days are held every third Sunday of each month (except December and January). Located in the grounds adjoining the Hotel Beatty, it is a good opportunity to have a chit chat, to have a treat to eat and to support local community groups. The Hotel Beatty presents good diverse live music. So why not spend a little time around the centre of our town.

We would love to have more persons involved with these days. Should any persons wish to have a stall or have items for sale eg a vehicle, produce, poultry, please contact our GDHSI organisers. Just $10 for a site or $5 for a community organisation.

PAGG visits Judy Boyden's garden at Monkerai Our host Judy Boyden gave us wonderful insight into the development of her unique home and garden. She has been in the Monkerai Valley for 5 years and built a Straw Bale House on her 250 acre property. The property was lantana infested, but with architectural help from Peter Brecknock, our permaculture member, she now has a beautiful home built by a local builder, Shane Hannan.

Her brief for the garden, which was designed by Leon Groves, was not to own a lawn mower! With little or no soil, Leon has provided raised garden beds for vegetables and Judy has included succulents and a few roses amongst her predominantly native garden.

Her ambition was to have the feeling of being surrounded by native garden, and a wonderful view of native landscape and that has certainly been achieved. Native plants such as Grevilleas and Myoporum thrive on the hillside and provide sensational ground cover.

Judy took us on a wander around her garden and was gracious in answering many questions. It was a fantastic morning and a privilege to spend time with Judy in her serene part of the world.

Dungog Shire Tourism Organisation

A meeting will be held at 6pm on Thursday 12 May at the Doug Walters Pavilion to progress the creation of the Dungog Shire Tourism Organisation. On 30 March a meeting asked Dr Cameron Archer to form a steering committee and develop an organisation to service the needs of tourism in the Shire.

This Steering Committee has met on 2 occasions and are now in a position to seek input from those who have an interest in the future of tourism in Dungog Shire. The committee was through selfnomination and then selection by the Chair. Those serving on the committee have been Kerry Jeffers, Matthew Coxhill, Jenny Lewis, Julie Fitzgerald and Nancy Knudsen.

Local Heritage Grants available Heritage item owners and managers in the Hunter are encouraged to apply for a NSW Government local Heritage Activation Grant to rejuvenate local heritage places. $2.67 million of funding would be available each financial year for 3 years to owners and managers of local heritage items through the program. Heritage Activation Grants provide funding for local government, businesses and community organisations to reactivate and animate local heritage spaces to preserve their heritage significance. They are open to owners and managers of heritage items listed on their council’s local heritage registers.

The grants, which are part of the Heritage Near Me program, will open more heritage spaces to communities across the state. Under the program, the government will also fund a heritage roadshow team of experts and a series of grants, including the Heritage Activation Grants, the Local Heritage Grants and Heritage Green Energy Grants. The $8 million program is aimed to bring local heritage back to life. Local communities know their local heritage better than anyone. This program will support communities in their efforts to conserve and celebrate their stories, places and values.
